Miller Ritchie

HILLSBORO, Ore. — Dr. Miller A.F. Ritchie, president of Hartwick College from 1953 to 1959, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at his home in Hillsboro, Ore. He was 91.

Ritchie was born in 1909 in Churchville, Va., the son of W.W.J. Ritchie, a Lutheran pastor, and Anna Maria Hinkel Ritchie. An educator for more than 50 years, he taught public school in Virginia, was chair of the department of human relations at the University of Miami, Fla., and was a college president for 17 years, first at Hartwick College, then at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore. (1959-70). During his retirement, he served for seven years as special consultant to the president of Marylhurst (Oregon) College.

When he became Hartwick's president in 1953, the college was on the brink of fiscal insolvency. He shored up the finances by consolidating the college's debts, raising tuition from $50 to $300 per year, selling several college-owned houses and freezing faculty salaries. He also started Hartwick's Citizens Board, an organization of Oneonta-area citizens who support the college.

One of Miller Ritchie's legacies to Hartwick was the establishment of the Yager Collection of Indian artifacts at the college. Willard Yager, an Oneonta newspaper editor and student of American Indian culture, left the college his enormous collection of Indian artifacts, including those from the Paleo-Indian to Late Woodlands period in this region, and Indian baskets, pottery and rugs from the Southwest. A bequest from Yager's sister, Marion, helped build Yager Hall on the Hartwick campus, which houses the Yager collection, museums, and the college library.

When Ritchie left Hartwick in 1959 to accept the presidency at Pacific University, the college was on more stable footing than it had been when he began his presidency. Enrollment had increased by more than 50 percent to 500 students, and the endowment had grown to more than $2 million.

Hartwick dedicated a quadrangle of new student residence halls, the Ritchie Quad, in his name in 1986.

Ritchie was the author of "The College Presidency: Initiation into the Order of the Turtle" (1970) and "Reflections of Life and Career" (1997). In addition to writing numerous chapters of books and journal articles, he wrote a twice-monthly column on aging for Times-Publications newspapers from 1982 to 1990.

He earned his bachelor's degree at Roanoke College and his master's degree from the College of William and Mary. He also did graduate work at Columbia and New York Universities. He was the recipient of honorary degrees from five colleges.

During World War II, he was an officer in the Naval Air Reserve and had risen to the rank of lieutenant commander by the time of his release to inactive duty.

Ritchie was nationally known as a speaker on education and human relations subjects. Tau Kappa Alpha, the national honorary forensic society, presented him with its Distinguished Alumni Award in 1962.

He was a member of many professional organizations, including the Commission on the Arts, the Association of American Colleges, the Commission on Church-State College Relations, the Commission on Human Rights and Responsibilities, the Task Force on Aging of the Central Pacific Conference, United Church of Christ and the Oregon Education Association. He also served on the board of Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon. In addition, he was a board member of the Independent Colleges Association and served at its president in 1964. He also served as president of the Oregon Colleges Association.

His public service activities included membership on the Oregon Governor's Committee on the Status of Women, the board of the Portland, Ore., Metropolitan YMCA, and as trustee of the National Conference of Christians and Jews.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Josephine Ritchie; son, John, and his partner, Betty Bradley, of Milwaukee; two daughters, JoAnn Ritchie and her partner, Sharon Reed, and her son, Mark, of Seattle; Elizabeth Hanson and her husband, Jerry Hanson, of North Plains, Ore.; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at the United Church of Christ in Forest Grove, Ore.
