Robert Preston Jr.
PORTLANDVILLE — Mr. Robert H. Preston Jr., 67, of Portlandville and Hudson, passed away Saturday, June 10, 2000, at his residence.
He was born July 27, 1932, in Madison, town of Sullivan, the son of Robert H. Sr. and Anna (Wise) Preston.
On May 27, 1961, he married Mariann Lepetich in Stamford; she survives.
Bob grow up on the Floss Farm in the town of South Kortright and attended South Kortright School before entering the United States Army serving in the Korean War.
He worked for Iron Mountain Security Storage in Rosendale, until his retirement.
He was a member of the VFW Post 3220, and past commander ( 1997-1998), of Staltville, member of the I.B. of Teamsters, Chauffeurs, Warehouseman and Helpers of America, and the Cherry Valley Fish and Game Club.
Bob was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Besides his wife, Mariann Preston of Portlandville; he is survived by a son, Allen Preston of Greenport; a brother-in-law, Robert Lepetich, who made his home with Bob and Mariann in Portlandville; brothers, Gail of Harpersfield and Leon of Panquitch, Utah; sisters, Esther of Bulverde, Texas, Margaret of Slynive Beach, Georganna of Hobart, Lucid of Hallstead, Pa., and Ruth of Harpersfield; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, George.
At his request, Bob was cremated at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley, and he will be interred in the Milford Center Cemetery on his birthday, Thursday, July 27, 2000, at 2 p.m.
Memorial contributions in Bob's memory may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
Minnie Konta
RICHMONDVILLE — Mrs. Minnie Konta, 90, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at the Oak's Health Care Center at Crane's Mill in West Caldwell, N.J., where she was a resident for three months.
She was born in Vienna, Austria, on March 16, 1910, and lived there until 1938, when she immigrated to the United States with her husband, Franz, whom she married in 1935. They moved to the Richmondville area in 1940, under the auspices of the Lutheran Church. Franz, a physician, became a "beloved country doctor" until 1967, and Minnie worked with him in all the nonmedical aspects of the endeavor. Franz died at the age of 65 in 1975.
Minnie was active in the auxiliary of the former Community Hospital of Schoharie County serving as president of the Bloodstone Unit. She was also an active member of the Eureka Class of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Richmondville.
Her survivors include her sons, Frederick Konta of Maplewood, N.J., and George Konta of Cobleskill; and her five grandchildren, David, Erin, Elizabeth, Sandra and Adam.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, June 17, 2000, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Main Street, Richmondville. Officiating will be the Rev. Gary Edmister and the Rev. Paul Messner. Calling hours will be from noon to 2 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in Richmondville Rural Cemetery. A reception will be held at the church following the committal service. Mrs. Konta was cremated in New Jersey.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested contributions be made to the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Main Street, Richmondville, N.Y. 12149.
Local arrangements are under the direction of Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 68 Elm St., Cobleskill.
Charles W. Thomas
ONEONTA — Charles W. Thomas, 86, of Oneonta, died on Sunday, June 11, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home.
He was born on May 22, 1914, in Oneonta, the son of the late Walter Scott and Mable Adella Brockway Thomas.
He was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn Mae Silvernail Thomas, on April 7, 1991.
He is survived by his daughter, Martha Murphy and her husband, Dennis, of Oneonta; grandchildren, Gregory Thomas of Albany, Stacy Murphy-vanGrinsven and her husband, Kenneth, of the Netherlands, and Amanda Murphy of Albany; close cousins, George Brockway of Atlanta, Ga., and Althea Ernst of Palm Springs, Calif.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mr. Thomas was a lifetime resident of the area working for D&H Railroad as a car inspector for many years until his retirement in 1975.
He was a member of the Retired Railroaders Club and the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen.
He was also a United States Army veteran of both World War II and the Korean Conflict, as well as a member of the Oneonta Lodge #466 of the F&AM, and the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta.
Mr. Thomas enjoyed bowling in leagues over the years with his wife, Evelyn.
Services will be 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Ned Eastman officiating. Interment will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday (today) at the funeral home.
Joseph D. Cortese
COOPERSTOWN — Joseph D. Cortese of Cooperstown died Monday, June 12, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare.
Joe was born in Cooperstown Junction on March 27, 1918, a son of Daniel and Edith (Bostwick) Cortese.
Joe attended school at Cooperstown High School. He was a veteran of World War II. Mr. Cortese worked as a laborer for Osterhoudt Contracting of Oneonta.
Joe enjoyed hunting, fishing and was an avid golfer especially playing at Woodhaven Golf Course.
Joe is survived by his sister, Kate Carman of Oneonta; a halfbrother, Raymond Nichols of Cauldwell, Idaho; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend and companion, Betty Page of Cooperstown.
He was predeceased by his brothers, David and Donald Cortese, and his mother, Edith Vibbard.
At the request of the family there will be no calling hours or funeral service.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Cooperstown Emergency Squad at P.O. Box 322, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

William Hynes III
STAMFORD — William C. Hynes III, 26, of North Scotsdale, Ariz., and formerly of Stamford, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, in North Scotsdale, Ariz., as the result of a motorcycle accident.
He was born Aug. 31, 1973, in Stamford, the son of William and Judith (Lawrence) Hynes Jr.
Bill graduated from Stamford Central School in June 1992. He furthered his education and graduated from The Universal Technical Institute at Phoenix, Ariz.
He was employed as a mechanic for Camelback Toyota in Phoenix, Ariz. Bill loved the game of golf.
He is survived by his parents, William and Judith Hynes of Stamford; a daughter, Katlyn Nicole Hynes of Denver, Colo.; two sisters, Teresa Hynes of Burgess, Va., and Marilyn Hynes of Stamford; a brother, Jonathan Hynes of Stamford; paternal grandparents, William C. and Rosemary Hynes Sr. of Loudenville; maternal grandparents, James and Ruth Brown of Guilderland; and aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 16, 2000, at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 West Main St., Stamford, with Elders David Buel and Wayne Stein of The Tabernacle of the Congregation at Franklin officiating.
Burial will be in the Stamford Cemetery, Stamford.
Friends may call at their convenience Thursday afternoon and evening at the funeral home. The family will be in attendance between 7 and 9 p.m.
Expressions of sympathy may be made in William's memory to the R.A. Robinson Emergency Squad, Main Street, Stamford, N.Y. 12167.

Dorothy S. Giehm
MARGARETVILLE — Committal services for Dorothy S. Giehm, who died Feb. 4, 2000, will be conducted by First Reader Helen New of the Christian Science Church, Oneonta. The service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 17, 2000, at the Sanford Cemetery, Margaretville.
Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
Neil G. Leonard
MORRIS — Neil Gadsby Leonard, 91, of Morris, died Monday, June 12, 2000, at the Oneonta Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
He was born June 8, 1909, in the town of Butternuts, the son of Adelbert and Clara J. (Gadsby) Leonard.
He was married to Bernice Stanley Johnson on Feb. 25, 1950, in the Methodist Church in Montrose, Pa.
For many years he owned and operated the Neil G. Leonard Real Estate Agency in Mount Upton and in Morris. He retired in December 1995, and was presented an honorary life membership with the Otsego, Delaware and Chenango Board of Realtors for his dedication and loyalty to the Board of Realtors.
He was raised to a master mason in the Walton Lodge #559 in June of 1950. He later moved to Mount Upton and transferred his membership to Butternuts Lodge #515 F&AM where he later served as master. He was a former member of the Oneonta Lodge of Perfection, Binghamton Consistory, 32 degree and a member of the Kalurah Shrine. He was a member of the Walter L. Hunt chapter of Royal Arch Masons where he served two terms as high priest. He was a former member of the Unadilla Fire Department and later the Mount Upton Fire Department where he was an honorary member. He was a member of the Walton Methodist Church and a former member of the Butternuts Town Board.
He is survived by his life partner and wife, Bernice Leonard, for the past 51 years of Morris; two daughters, Alicia Pagano of Jersey City, N.J., and Rita Mott and her husband, Clifford, of Masonville; a son, Stanley Leonard, and his wife, Sally, of Morris; one stepson, Richard Johnson, and his wife, Barbara, of Fayetteville; a stepdaughter, Patricia Schriber, and her husband, John, of Otego; cousins, Edna Gadsby of Oneonta and Raymond and Frances Sherburne of Eaton; 10 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Rolland Leonard; and grandsons, David Mott and Matthew Leonard.
Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family, with the Rev. Joseph Fiske officiating. Burial will be in the Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville. Calling hours will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Johnston Funeral Home, Morris. A Masonic service will be held at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday evening.
Friends are asked to donate to the Masonic Home of Utica or your local emergency squad in his memory.
Murlyn Dickerman
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Murlyn B. (Dick), Dickerman, 87, of Alexandria, Va., and Cooperstown, N.Y., died of cancer on June 8, 2000.
Born in Hamden, Conn., he graduated from the University of Connecticut with distinction, followed by graduate work in forestry at the University of California, where he received a master of science degree. He entered the United States Forest Service in 1937, at Baldwin, Mich., and soon transferred to the Northeast Forest Research Station at Cooperstown, N.Y., where he guided development of the Forest Products Cooperative.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Cooperstown for more than 50 years.
Mr. Dickerman was stationed with the Allied Commission in Rome, Italy, and later with UNRRA in Athens, Greece. He returned to the Forest Service in Missoula, Mont., where he supervised a comprehensive survey of timber resources in western Montana. This was followed by a 14-year assignment as Director of Lake States Research Station in St. Paul, Minn. Transferring to Washington, D.C. in 1965, he was appointed Deputy Chief for Research. During his assignment, he headed the US Forestry Science and Technology Exchanges to Russia and China.
He is survived by his wife; a sister; three stepsons; and grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the International Society of Tropical Forestry or the Society of American Foresters.
Albert Soued
HUDSON, Fla. — Albert Soued, 73, died Friday, May 26, 2000, at Regional Medical Center, Hudson, Fla.
He was born Feb. 5, 1927, in Brooklyn, N.Y. to Elias and Theresa Spinelli Soued.
He was married to Neva Quick in Oneonta, N.Y. on Feb. 21, 1948.
Albert graduated from Otego High School in 1947, after returning from serving in the United States Army in World War II. He graduated from Hartwick College in August 1950, with a bachelor's degree in accounting.
He then joined Bendix Corp. in 1950, as a junior accountant clerk, eventually achieving the position of connector pricing supervisor, which he held at his retirement in 1986.
Albert was active in the community. He served as treasurer to Bugbee School PTA; he served in the Boy Scouts on the troop committee for about 10 years and he also served as treasurer and Scoutmaster. He was a past commander of American Legion Post 259, and served as house chairman for several years. He was elected to the board of directors of the Financial Corp. for three three-year terms; he also served as president of the board for three years.
Albert and his wife have spent the last 10 years living between Maryland, N.Y., and Port Richey, Fla. While living in Florida, he belonged to the Lakes of Regency Civic Association and was an active member of the Security Patrol.
He is survived by his wife, Neva Soued; one daughter, Lynda Dyane and her husband, Jeffrey Van Slooten, of Sacramento, Calif.; and four sons, Frederick (Rick) Soued, and his wife, Joanne, of Ashland, Ore., Craig Soued of San Francisco, Calif., Jeffrey Soued of Ramsey, N.J., and Brett Soued and special friends, Kim Saprenzia and Shaun Saprenzia, of Ballston Lake, N.Y. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Alex Soued of Ashland, Ore., Theresa Dyane and Jacob Van Slooten of Sacramento, Calif., and Derek and Erica Soued of Ramsey, N.J.; one brother, Anthony Soued, and his wife, Mary, of Stanton, Calif.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his oldest brother, Michael in 1969.
Albert was cremated.
There will be a graveside memorial this summer, time to be made known later.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.
Richard I. Wolf
VENICE, Fla. — Dr. Richard I. "Rich" Wolf, 62, of Venice, Fla., died Saturday, June 10, 2000.
He was born Jan. 31, 1938, in the Bronx, N.Y.
He has been a resident for five years. He came from Oneonta, N.Y.
He was a college professor with the State University College at Oneonta. He received his bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees from the State University at Albany.
He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Venice, Fla.; Jacaranda West Country Club, Venice, Fla.; member and past exhalted ruler of B.P.O.E. Lodge #1312, Oneonta, N.Y.; and member of the Oneonta Country Club.
Dr. Wolf is survived by his wife, Carolyn Wolf (married 37 years) of Venice, Fla.; mother, Irene Stein of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; brother, Martin Wolf of Omaha, Neb.; and nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, June 16, with an Elks service at 7 p.m., Venice, Fla.
Services will be held at noon Saturday, June 17, from St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Venice, Fla.
A memorial service will be held at St. James Church at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to St. James Church or B.P.O.E. Lodge #1312, Oneonta, N.Y.

Herman Schutte Jr.
NORFOLK, Va. — Herman H. Schutte Jr., 87, passed away June 11, 2000, in the arms of his children.
He was born and raised in Jersey City, N.J., and graduated in 1931 from Regis High School in Manhattan.
He spent 31 years as a grain inspector on the New York harbors before relocating to Virginia in 1965, and retiring from the Virginia Department of Agriculture in 1978.
He served as a Seabee in World War II and was a member of the American Legion Post 327.
His amazing storytelling fascinated and entertained hundreds and he will be dearly missed, but always remembered by his wife of 62 years, Charlotte; his daughter, Charlene; his sons, Mark and Alan; and his grandchildren, Lori Ann, Jeanine, Frank, Vincent, Renee, Eric and Kyle; as well as his newest granddaughter and first great-grandchild both due in the coming months.
A graveside service will be conducted by Fr. Ed at 1 p.m., Saturday, June 17, 2000, in Maryland Cemetery. Heller Funeral Home is assisting Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home with the arrangements.
So long, Herman. You were one of a kind and all our lives were made richer by having you among us for so many long, wonderful years.
Georgia W. Pegg
ONEONTA — Georgia W. Pegg, 71, of Oneonta and formerly of Maple Grove, died Tuesday, June 13, 2000, at her residence after a lengthy illness.
She was born Feb. 9, 1929, in Butternuts, the daughter of Bert and Beulah (Lawrence) Wilber.
She was married to Lyle Springett in June 1945. She later married Guy Pegg on Nov. 7, 1950. Mr. Pegg died in August 1987.
Mrs. Pegg was an LPN, having worked at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital for 30 years before her retirement in 1979.
She has been a lifelong area resident.
Mrs. Pegg is survived by one son, Gary Springett of Boston, Mass.; one daughter, Sherry Springett of Oneonta; three grandchildren; several nephews, nieces and cousins; and a close friend, Joan Howard of Oneonta.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, June 16, 2000, at Cook Cemetery in West Oneonta, with the Rev. William Miller officiating.
There will be no calling hours; however, the family will be receiving friends at 12 Blanchard Ave., following the service.
