Eileen Hall Rand, 81, formerly of Grandview Avenue in Lake Placid died Monday, Jan. 15, 2007 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Born Feb. 7, 1925 in Lake Placid, she was the daughter of John and Gertrude (Brown) Hall. Eileen was a graduate of Saranac Lake High School Class of 1942 and the Katherine Gibbs Business School in New York City. She was the wife of Jay Rand Sr. She is survived by three daughters: Judy Scammell and her husband Don of Lake Placid, Barbara Ryan and her husband Dennis of Clifton Park, Mary Farr and her husband Dan of Montoursville, Pa.; three sons: Jay Rand and his wife Gun of Lake Placid, Steve Rand of Lake Placid and John Rand Jr. and his wife Terry of Lake Placid; seven grandchildren: Nicole Righter Todd and her husband Jed, Ingrid Rand Stanton and her husband Joe, Tyler Rand, Owen Rand, Stanzi McGlynn, Denja Rand and Janne Rand; and four great-grandchildren: Tanner, Tess, Anders and Tristin Stanton. She was predeceased by her husband on Oct. 17, 1999 and her parents. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for family and friends at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19 at St. Agnes Church in Lake Placid. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery in Lake Placid with the Rev. Patrick O’Reilly officiating. The family suggests donations in memory of Eileen be made to the Lake Placid Volunteer Ambulance Service. The Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid is in charged of arrangements.
Edna Irene MacDowell, 89, formerly of 158 Lake St., Saranac Lake, died peacefully Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007 at the home of her daughter in Smyrna. Born March 17, 1917 at the Weaver Apple Orchard in Schuyler Falls, she was one of 15 children born to Herbert and Stella (Blair) Morrow. She was married to Bruce MacDowell. She is survived by four children: Pamela Ann Simmons of Smyrna, Gary Bruce MacDowell of Dryden, Jon Wallace MacDowell of Bloomingdale, and David Scott MacDowell of Saranac Lake; two brothers: Frederick Morrow of Saranac Lake and Vernon Morrow of Bloomingdale; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband March 25, 1998; her parents; and 12 brothers and sisters. There will be no calling hours. Services will take place at the convenience of the family. Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake.

Eileen Morrison, 88, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007 at Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid where she had been a residence since June 2004. Born Oct. 26, 1918 in Lake Placid, she was the daughter of John and Leah (Lewis) Farley. The wife of Walter Morrison, she was the owner and operator of the Tic Toc Restaurant and Bar in Lake Placid before retiring in the mid-1970s. She is survived by a son, William Morrison and his wife Sandra of Lake Placid; a daughter, Sheila Wasson and her husband James of Lake Placid; a sister, Mary Peryea of Ray Brook; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband on March 15, 1993; two daughters: Sandy (Fredericks) Smith and Pat Culleton; three brothers: Bernard, Joe and Robert; and a granddaughter, Shelly Fredericks. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16 at the Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at noon Wednesday, Jan. 17 at the Reiss Memorial Chapel at Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid with the Rev. Joseph Morgan officiating. Carol Shanty, 82, formerly of Harrietstown Road in Saranac Lake, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2007 at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Born Nov. 11, 1924 in Adrian, Mich., she was the daughter of James and Edith (Richie) Arnold. She married Leon A. Shanty on July 9, 1945 at St. Pauls Church in Bloomingdale. Mrs. Shanty had been a resident of Saranac Lake since 1946. She is a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during World War II from 1944 to 1946. She had been employed as a secretary for various area businesses including the Dress Factory, Saranac Lake Supply, Montgomery Wards and most recently the Franklin County Probation Department until her retirement in 1991. She also owned and operated the Senteniel View Stables in Saranac Lake for more than 40 years. Mrs. Shanty was a district commissioner and instructor of the Pony Club and was an active volunteer leader for the 4-H Club for more than 10 years. She was also a volunteer at the Tri-Lakes Humane society for many years. She is survived by her six children: Michael Shanty and his wife Carla of Lake Clear, Sherry Shanty of Plattsburgh, Daryll Prue and her husband Preston of North Syracuse, Bruce Shanty and his wife Jane of Saranac Lake, Jamie Shanty and his wife Robin of Gabriels and Linda Olivera and her husband Henry of Miramar, Fla.; nine grandchildren: Renee, Michelle, Heather, Christina, Rachel, JamyLin, Sarah, Tiffany and Kimberly; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lenore Mac of Skaneateles; and one niece and one nephew.

Edward M. Patnode, 81, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2007 after a brave struggle with cancer. He was a retired English teacher. Born Jan. 8, 1925 in Lake Placid, he was the son of Bartholomew and Winifred Patnode. He grew up with seven siblings. He left high school to join the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific during World Ward II. After the war, he attended Union College in Schenectady, and received his bachelor’s degree in 1949 and his master’s degree in 1950. He taught English in Pawling from 1950 to 1954; then in Mohawk from 1954 to 1960. He joined the high school staff of Nyack in 1960, served as assistant principal for several years and retired in 1985. He then moved to Lake Placid. Sports was one of his major interests and he encouraged many young people to participate in a wide variety of sports. He officiated and coached for hockey, swimming, soccer, football and lacrosse and had an international rating in luge. He was an official at the 1980 Winter Olympics, as well as at many sporting events throughout the year in Lake Placid. Mr. Patnode’s interests included reading, swing music and volunteering with a number of organizations. His volunteer activities included ambulance work, college recruiting, health care providers and many other charitable groups. He had a lifelong love of the Adirondack Mountain region. He is survived by his former wife, Kip Smith of Middletown; four children: Michael Patnode of Lexington, Mass., Mark Patnode of New London, Conn., Anne Wilson of Lake Placid and Maggie Szeliga of Long Lake, Minn.; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid. An American Legion prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9 at the St. Agnes Church in Lake Placid. Burial will be in the St. Agnes Cemetery.
Ellen Marie Sullivan, 90, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2007 at the Elizabeth Community Hospital in Elizabethtown. Born Jan. 30, 1916 in Lake Placid, she was the daughter of Michael and Alice (Montany) Sullivan. She is survived by one sister, Alice McGillis of Saranac Lake; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers: George Jr., Francis and Michael; and one aunt, Olive Taylor of Lake Placid. There are no calling hours. A funeral Mass was hel at the Saint Agnes Church in Lake Placid with the Rev. Patrick O’Reilly, chaplain of Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid, officiating. Burial will be in the Saint Agnes Cemetery in Lake Placid. The Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid is in charge of arrangements.
Jeanne A. Beaudette, 55, of Tupper Lake, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2007 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Born July 19, 1951 in Tupper Lake, she was the daughter of Armand and Helen “Skipper” (LaFountain) Reandeau. Jeanne was a graduate of Tupper Lake High School, class of 1969. On Jan. 17, 1970 she married Michael Beaudette. Jeanne was the head of housekeeping for Whitney Industries where she had been employed for the past 20 years. She enjoyed latchhooking and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Michael; three daughters: Michelle Rice and her husband, Michael, Amy Boudreau and her husband, Matthew, Reanda Leondard and her husband, Edward Jr. all of Tupper Lake; seven grandchildren: Kevin Beaudette, Ashley and Austin Rice, Amber, Brandon and Colby Boudreau and Jenna Leonard and was awaiting the arrival of her eighth grandchild due in five weeks; her mother, Helen of Tupper Lake; a brother, Chris Reandeau of Tupper Lake; three sisters: Bonnie McFadyen and her husband, Alan of Tupper Lake, Karen King and her husband Bernard of Clayton, N.C., Tammy Trombley of Lebanon, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father in 1993. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7 at the Stuart-Fortune-Keough Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Alphonsus Church in Tupper Lake. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Paul D. Zemany, 90, of Saranac Lake, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007 at the Alice Hyde Nursing Home in Malone. Born Oct. 13, 1916 in Fairfield, Conn., he was the son of Michael and Ludmilla (Klein) Zemany. Paul Zemany had been a year-round resident of Saranac Lake since 1986, and spent summers with his family on Upper Saranac Lake since 1956. He graduated from Yale University in 1938 with a bachelors degree in chemistry and later earned his Ph.D. in physical chemistry at New York University in 1941. He married the former Matilda Cheplic on Jan. 25, 1945 in Bruceton, Pa. In 1941, Dr. Zemany went to work for the National Defense Research Committee, U.S. Bureau of Mines as a research associate studying explosive technologies. He then worked as a senior chemist at the General Electric Company’s Corporate Research and Development Center and then at the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Schenectady from 1946 until his retirement in 1975. Dr. Zemany held nearly 40 patents for the development of analytical techniques and innovative GE products. He wrote numerous scientific journal articles, and also co-authored “X-Ray Absorption and Emission in Analytical Chemistry,” a textbook used in graduate chemistry courses for many years, and translated into multiple languages. He was a member of the American Chemical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Zemany is survived by two sons: Payl Zemany and his wife Hye Son of Nashua, N.H. and their daughter Laura, Michael Zemany and his wife Sue of Saranac Lake and their children: Erin of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Elise of Lake Placid and Adam of Saranac Lake; and one daughter Nancy Steve and her husband Ronald of Portage, Ind. and their two sons Ronald, and Michael, and his wife Shannon and their three sons, Brandon, Eric and Jared. He was predeceased by his wife on Aug. 28, 1999. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8 at the Presbyterian Church in Saranac Lake. Beatrice A. Drutz, formerly of Saranac Lake, died Sunday, December 31, 2006 at her daughters home in Plattsburgh with her family by her side. Born in Saranac Lake, on September 6, 1921, she was the daughter of Edgar and Anna (Gebo) LaPlante. She married Joseph Drutz on April 27, 1942 in Saranac Lake. He predeceased her on December 30, 1975. Mrs. Drutz was a life long resident of Saranac Lake and had been employed at the Adirondack Daily Enterprise as a Secretary/Librarian until her retirement in 2000. Prior to that she had worked with her husband, Joe at Drutz Fine Food and taught second grade at St. Bernards School. Bea was a very active volunteer in the Saranac Lake Free Library. She worked at the Antique Show and Sale each year. She had been a member of the Womens Civic Chamber, the Women of the Elks, the Saranac Lake Duplicate Bridge Club, the Saranac Lake Golf Club, she was a Girl Scout Leader and offered her typing services to the "Pack Basket", a Saranac Lake Central School newspaper. Bea was very active at St. Bernard's Church where she belonged to the Mothers Club, Catholic Daughters of America, CFM (Christian Family Movement) and RCIA. She is survived by three daughters JoAnne Balzar and her husband Bill of Laredo, Tx, Jean Nesbitt of Plattsburgh, NY and Deborah Clinch of Auburn, NY. Six grandchildren Beth Balzar and her husband Alberto, Amy Harvey and her husband Richard, Thomas Nesbitt and his wife Ellen, Jill Nesbitt, Christen Clinch and Melanie Phillips and her husband Todd. Four great-grandchildren, Jackson Harvey, Miguel Nesbitt, Wyatt and Todd Phillips. A sister-in-law Bess Redmond and two cousins Alburn Hathaway and Ernest Gebo also survive. Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 from 1:00pm - 4:00pm and 6:00pm -8:00pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on January 4th, 2007 at 1:00pm. Burial will follow in St. Bernards Cemetery in Saranac Lake. Ruth Virginia Sochia, 89, of 9 Hurd Ave., Tupper Lake, died Wednesday, April 11, 2007 at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Born June 10, 1917 in Nicholville, she was the daughter of Frank and Amelia (Besaw) Jones. She married Harvey Sochia on March 21, 1937. Mrs. Sochia was a member of Holy Name Church in Tupper Lake. She enjoyed playing bingo, reading, sewing and crossword puzzles. She is survived by four children: Richard and Diane Sochia of Redwood, Marjorie and Robert Barker of Syracuse, Utah, Marlene Wells of Parishville and Cindy and Jeannel Lizotte of Tupper Lake; 18 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and 17great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband on March 9,1979; two grandchildren: Robert and William; a sister Margaret Ayotte; and three brothers: Vraneous, Ronald and Chester Jones. Calling hours will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 14 and from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 15 at the Stuart-Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Tupper Lake. A funeral service will follow at 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with the Rev. Chris Luzon officiating. Burial will be in May in the Gale Cemetery in Childwold. Edmund John VanCour, 87, formerly of 92 Olive St., Saranac Lake, died peacefully Wednesday, April 11, 2007, in Fort Payne, Ala. Born Oct. 6, 1919 in Saranac Lake, he was the son of Joseph and Rose VanCour. He was married to his loving wife Erma for 57 years. He attended local schools and graduated from Saranac Lake High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II. He was employed by the Ray Brook State Tuberculosis Hospital for many years until his retirement. He is survived by two daughters: Dinah O’Sullivan and husband John of Birmingham, Ala. and Marsha Beckwith and her husband Glenn of Ludlow, Mass.; two step-daughters: Sylvia Tucker and her husband Al of Fort Payne, Ala. and Sandra Pickreign of Ludlow, Mass.; two brothers: Stanley of Lake Placid and Ronald of Jay; one sister Grace Douglas of Fletcher, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife in August 2006; his son Stephen John; his parents; and four brothers: Ralph, Bernard, Ernest and Thomas. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Birmingham, Ala. Burial will be at a later date in St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Saranac Lake. Donations in his memory may be made to the local hospice.
Archie C. Strack, 74, of Lake Clear, died Wednesday, April 11, 2007 at his home. Born June 15, 1932 in Lake Clear, he was the son of Philip and Frances (Donaldson) Strack. He married Kathryn Coventry Dec. 29, 1973 in Lake Clear by the Rev. Robert Lamitie. Mr. Strack was a lifelong resident of the area and had been employed as a heavy equipment operator and highway superintendent for the town of Harrietstown for more than 33 years until his retirement in 1987. He served in the United States Air Force during Korean War from 1950 to 1954. He is survived by his wife; two sons: Thomas Strack and his wife Mel of Saranac Lake and Michael Strack and his wife Becky of Saranac Lake; a daughter Lynette Lamora and her husband Mickey of Lake Clear; seven grandchildren: Meghan, Douglas, Christian, Kayla, Emily, Gabby and Zyler; several nieces and nephews; and his “baby” Chewie. Strack was predeceased by his parents; two brothers; and a sister. Mr. Strack’s family will receive friends from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 14 at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A memorial service will immediately follow at the funeral home with the Rev. Jeffery Hubbard officiating.
