John Mewhorter Sr.

COOPERSTOWN — John (Jack) W. Mewhorter Sr., 60, of Cooperstown, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, at his home.

Jack was born Aug. 14, 1939, in Oneonta, a son of Robert and Mary (Brooks) Mewhorter.

Jack graduated from Sidney High School after which he served in the United States Air Force.

He married Lora Nichols (who predeceased him Sept. 25, 1988) in Oneonta on April 12, 1959.

Jack worked for the state Department of Environmental Conservation until his retirement.

He has resided in the Cooperstown and Milford area for the past 30-plus years.

Jack enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid sports fan.

He was a member of the Walter P. Eggleston Post #7128 VFW and the Clark F. Simmons American Legion Post #579.

Jack is survived by two sons, John W. Mewhorter Jr. and Daniel Mewhorter of Virginia Beach, Va.; a daughter and son-in-law, Lynnette and John Peterson of Newton, Kan.; three granddaughters, Jessica and Rebecca Carpenter of Virginia and Lora Peterson of Newton, Kan.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Earl and Linda Mewhorter of Orange City, Fla., and Ralph and Dawn Mewhorter of Unadilla; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Marjorie Christensen of Coal Dale Alberta, Canada, Delores and Marshall Dubois of Phenix City, Ala., Evelyn and Gordon Chesley of Orange City, Fla., and Mary and Anson Knapp of Oneonta; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

He was predeceased by a son, Robert Mewhorter; a daughter, Diann Carpenter, in 1990; a sister, Yvonne Richie, in 1998; and a brother, Robert Mewhorter.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at 1 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, officiating.

Calling hours will be on Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when the family will be in attendance. The family will also be receiving family and friends at a gathering at Knott's Motel in Goodyear Lake on Thursday evening, Feb. 17, 2000, starting at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to either the American Heart Association at 120 Lomond Court, Utica, N.Y. 13502 or to the American Cancer Society (Oneonta office) at 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Minnie Irons Mead

HARTWICK — Minnie Irons Mead, 94, of Hartwick, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000.

Minnie was born on June 18, 1905, in the town of Otsego, a daughter of Marion Elwin and Hattie (Wart) Irons.

She has lived in the village of Hartwick since November 1917, attended Hartwick Union School and was the oldest member of the Hartwick Christian Church, having joined in October 1919.

Minnie was a telephone operator for the Otsego Telephone Co. (now AT&T) while attending high school as well as the Riverside Manufacturing Co., which made overalls. She also worked in the 1920s as a grocery clerk for the late Lulu Morse and Don Perrine in Hartwick, from 1934-42 summers for Stephen Clark's in Cooperstown and 26 years for Bendix Corp. in Sidney until her retirement in September 1967.

Minnie married Floyd (Speedy) Mead on Nov. 1, 1922, in Mount Vision. He predeceased her on Oct. 1, 1980,

She was a former member of the Hartwick Order of Eastern Star (was worthy matron in 1931), a charter member of the Hartwick Emergency Squad, which was formed in 1967, a member of the Hartwick and Mount Vision Senior Citizens Club, and a member of the Bassett Hospital Auxiliary.

Surviving are a daughter, Rowena Burgess of Hartwick; two brothers, Carl Irons of Venice, Fla., and Harold Irons of Mesa, Ariz.; three grandsons, William Burgess Jr. of Cornelius, N.C., Dennis Burgess of Yuba City,  Calif., and Bruce Burgess of Tokyo, Japan; 10 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; three nieces and one nephew.

She was predeceased by a sister, Fannie Irons; a brother, Melvin Irons; and a grandson, Donald Burgess.

At the request of the family there will be no calling hours or funeral service, but there will be a graveside service in the spring, with the Rev. Laverne Saxer, pastor of the Hartwick Christian Church, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Hartwick Christian Church at West Main Street, Hartwick, N.Y. 13348; the Hartwick Emergency Squad at P.O. Box 208, Hartwick, N.Y. 13348; or the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc. at 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Alice Sandell Clark

WOODLAND,  Calif. — Alice Sandell Clark passed away on Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, in Woodland,  Calif.

She was born on Nov. 24, 1922, in Oneonta, N.Y., to Harold Sandell and Gertrude Northrop Sandell.

After high school graduation she went to work, first as a secretary in a law office and then in Citizens National Bank.

At the age of 41 she began taking classes part-time at the State University College at Oneonta and then became the science department secretary there. She continued to take classes and graduated first in her class. She then was awarded a scholarship to the library school at the State University at Albany. Upon receiving her MLS degree, she taught at the library school before taking a position as a library administrator at Ohio State University. She later became the assistant director of libraries for the University of New Mexico and upon her retirement was the acting director of libraries there.

During this period, on her vacations, she returned to SUCO and earned an M.A. in history, writing her thesis on Wallace Nutting. She also was the author of several books and articles on library science.

She particularly enjoyed working with and mentoring young librarians. She was also very involved with campus-wide issues and was honored for her efforts in increasing campus access for disabled students. When she retired, a room at the University of Mexico library was named in her honor.

She retired to Davis,  Calif., where she enjoyed gardening, reading, and walking her dog. She traveled widely throughout the world with several of her close friends.

She was a member of the Davis Community Church.

She was predeceased by her sister, Evelyn; and former husband, Dewey Clark Jr.

She is survived by her sons Peter Clark and his wife, Mary, of Cooperstown, N.Y., and Bruce Clark and his wife, Judith, of Winters,  Calif.; two grandchildren, Seth and Molly Clark of Oneonta, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Rosamond Collins of Stanford; nephews, Terry Collins of Davenport and Scott Collins, Emil Reynolds, Mack Reynolds and Mark Polk; and a niece, Laverne Land, all of California; as well as numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.

Private services are planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Otsego Hospice or the charity of your choice.

Alexandra Schultz

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Alexandra H. (Queenie) Schultz, 93, of Cooperstown, died late Tuesday evening, Feb. 15, 2000, at The Meadows.

She was born on Nov. 17, 1906, in Garrattsville, a daughter of Hugh and May (Mercer) Hall.

She married  Jackson S. Schultz III on Nov. 22, 1942, at the First Presbyterian Church in Cooperstown. Mr. Schultz died on March 18, 1987.

Queenie was raised in Cooperstown and graduated from Cooperstown High School in the Class of 1926. Following graduation from the Eastman School of Business, she pursued a career in nursing, graduating from the Presbyterian School of Nursing.

As a registered nurse, Queenie was first employed at the Otsego County Children's Society, later at the Presbyterian Hospital in New York City and then at Ogden Memorial Hospital in Elmira. In 1947, she began a 26-year career at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, retiring in 1973. Following retirement she worked at the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home and later at The Meadows, retiring from there in 1983.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Cooperstown and enjoyed creating hooked rugs and stenciling.

Queenie's family wishes to thank everyone at The Meadows for their kind, considerate and understanding care.

She is survived by her daughter, Janet W. Schultz of Cooperstown; her son,  Jackson S. Schultz IV, and his wife, Patricia, of Fly Creek; four grandchildren, Amy M. Carey, Andrea M. Schultz, Sara M. Schultz and Rebecca B. Schultz; and two great-grandchildren, Brianne M. Carey and Lyman B. Townsend III.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date at the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

At the request of the family there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Hartwick Volunteer Fire Department Company No. 2, 4877 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Henry W. Carman

DELANCEY — Henry William (Bill) Carman, 58, of RD1 Box 49, Cabin Hill Road, DeLancey, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, at his home.

Bill was born on Dunk Hill in Walton, to Isaac Homer and Minnie (Alberts) Carman on Jan. 12, 1942.

Bill graduated from Downsville Central School in June of 1960 and was FFA president.

He formerly owned a farm and a cash-cropping business in Dutchess County and also worked for the town of Walton and the town of Delhi as a mechanic.

He was known for his smoked venison, kind-heartedness and his helpfulness to his many friends.

Bill leaves his wife of 38 years, Doris (Mericle) Carman; and their three sons and daughters-in-law, Walt and Nancy Carman of Prattsville, Glenn and Tammy Carman of Lexington and Rodney and Peggy Carman of Walton; seven grandchildren: five granddaughters, Jessica, Ashley, Brittney, Hannah and Rachel, and two grandsons, William and Lil' Walt; his mother, Minnie Carman of Pine Plains; three sisters, Bessie Carman of California, Catherine Jenson of Buffalo, Wyo., and JoAnn Chappell of Wassaic; four brothers, Donald Carman of Greene, Clarence Carman of Dover Plains, Richard Carman of Pine Plains and Thomas Carman of Pine Plains; and several nieces and nephews.

Bill was predeceased by his father, Isaac; and a brother, David.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at 1 p.m. at Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton, with the Rev. Bert More, a close family friend, officiating. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery in the spring. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, Feb. 18, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. before the service.

Memorial contributions in memory of Bill may be made to: Walton Youth Center, care of Al and Barbara Budine, River Road, Walton, N.Y. 13856.

Edward J. Cassidy

BETHESDA, Md. — Edward J. Cassidy, 93, a 25-year resident of the city of Oneonta and formerly of Niagara Falls, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, in a nursing home in Bethesda, Md.

He had attended St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church.

In 1935, he married Mary Muenzen Cassidy of Westchester County.

In the latter half of the 1930s, he became a Niagara Falls fireman. His superiors recognized him for many actions considered above and beyond the call of duty. These actions included performing rescue missions during fires that presented more risk than he was professionally required to confront. He also responded to crises presented by the turbulence of the Niagara River.

He was publicly acknowledged for his rescue of a 14-year-old boy who slipped into the Three Sister Islands at the brink of the Horseshoe Falls.

He received the United States Coast Guard Medal, and later the Levy award for his heroic effort. The incident was described in Cornet Magazine in an article titled "The Man Who Conquered Niagara."

Edward was predeceased by his wife in January 1996 and previously, two sisters, Margaret Cassidy Archbold and Mary Cassidy Brown.

His five children, Patricia Devine, 30-year resident of Oneonta, Elizabeth Muessle of Bethesda, Md., Mary Milavec of Clifton Park, N.Y., Edward M. Cassidy of Lewiston, N.Y., and Arthur J. Cassidy of Sanborn, N.Y., survive him. He additionally leaves eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He will be buried later this year at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

Edward was a devoted Roman Catholic, a loving husband and father, an American proud of his Irish heritage and a student of history, especially Irish history. He celebrated St. Patrick's Day the way others celebrate their birthday.

Alice S. Snee

ONEONTA — Mrs. Alice S. Snee, 90, of Oneonta, died Friday evening, Feb. 11, 2000, at the O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

She was born Jan. 17, 1910, in Mohawk, the daughter of Earle and Clara (Wilcox) Southern.

She married Patrick Snee in 1937, in Oneonta. He died in 1963.

Alice lived in Oneonta since she was young. She graduated from Oneonta High School. In 1932, she was a graduate of a nursing school in a Jewish Hospital in Brooklyn. She was a registered nurse at the Latcher Hospital on Center Street until 1943.

Alice was co-owner of the Duke Restaurant in Oneonta. She then worked for the city of Oneonta Department of Public Works as a secretary for almost 20 years. She also was the secretary and bookkeeper for the Glenwood Cemetery Association in Oneonta.

Alice had attended St. James Episcopal Church in Oneonta, she was a retired member of the CSEA, a member of the Oneonta Business Women's Club and past officer, and she was an honorary member of the Lion and Lioness Club of Oneonta.

Alice is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Edward P. and Loretta Snee of Sun Prarie, Wis.; a grandson, Timothy P. Snee of Greenbay, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.

Alice was predeceased by a sister, Mrs. Alma Cunero; and two brothers, Milton and Robert Southern.

Funeral and committal services will be held on Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. Burial will be in the spring at the Mount Vision Cemetery, Mount Vision. The family will be in attendance on Friday at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until service time.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

George Stevens

MARGARETVILLE — George Stevens, a Margaretville businessman and youth athletic coach, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, due to illness at Margaretville Memorial Hospital. He was 66.

He was born Yuri Sebetovsky, Dec. 18, 1933, in Bratislava, Slovakia, to the late Bruno and Cecelia Sebetovsky.

George and family came to the United States on Dec. 21, 1968, because of the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia, and settled in New York City. He moved to Margaretville in August of 1971, after purchasing Royal Cleaners from relatives.

He was mostly known to the area as a youth coach. He had started the first local youth soccer league in the summer of 1974. In the winter of 1978, he began a very popular and thriving gymnastics club, which became the Northern Delaware Gymnastics Club. His professional gymnastics coaching career ended in retirement with gym clubs in the Hobart and Fleischmanns areas.

He was recently awarded a lifetime achievement award for his dedication of time and love to help the area's children grow in athletics.

He is survived by his wife, Eva, whom he married on May 24, 1959; two sons, Paul of Congers and Dennis of Rosendale; two daughters-in-law, Margaret and Susan; grandchildren, Jessica, Danielle and Matthew of Congers and Brett and Brandon of Rosendale; and his mother.

Donations in his memory can be sent to Catskill Area Hospice, Oneonta.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at Hynes Funeral Home in Margaretville.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Robert Nash officiating at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Margaret Kniskern

ONEONTA — Mrs. Margaret Kniskern, 93, of Oneonta, died Tuesday evening, Feb. 15, 2000, at the Oneonta Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born Dec. 29, 1906, in Oneonta, the daughter of Klas and Breta (Hedlund) Grant.

On Jan. 1, 1924, she married Kenneth Kniskern. He predeceased her on Oct. 31, 1976.

She spent her entire life in Oneonta and was a member of the Main Street Baptist Church.

Margaret is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, William and Dorothy Kniskern of Pearce, Ariz., and Wayne and Janet Kniskern of Oneonta; one daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Wilber Russ of Maryland; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Gary Bonebrake, pastor of the Main Street Baptist Church, Oneonta, officiating. Mrs. Kniskern will be placed in the Bookhout Funeral Home private vault to await spring burial in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta. Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to services.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be given to the Main Street Baptist Church, Oneonta, in memory of Margaret Kniskern.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Emerson D. Jacobs

SIDNEY CENTER — Emerson D. Jacobs, 86, of Sidney Center, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, at his home.

He was born Sept. 1, 1913, in Carbondale, Pa., the son of William and Rachael (Daniels) Jacobs.

He was married to Beatrice Buchert on June 9, 1937, in Hawley, Pa. Mrs. Jacobs died on May 2, 1988.

Mr. Jacobs has been a 48-year resident of Sidney Center and was a retired employee of the Amphenol Corp. of Sidney.

He was a member of the Chenango County Horsemen's Association.

He is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Pete Cordes of Sidney Center, Margaret Halpin of Bainbridge and Susan and Craig Storrer of Walton; two sons and a daughter-in-law, William and Rosemary Jacobs of Masonville and James Jacobs of Sidney; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held later in Willow View Cemetery, Clifford, Pa.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla, Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, from 4 to 7 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Center Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.
