Thelma M. Gras
AMSTERDAM — Mrs. Thelma M. Gras, 96, of Northway Mobile Home Community, Route 30 North, Amsterdam, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Gras was born May 26, 1903, in Seward, Schoharie County, a daughter of Henry and Clara Sexton Eckerson. She was a graduate of Cobleskill High School.
She resided in the Oneonta area for most of her life moving to Amsterdam in 1990.
While in Oneonta she was very active with the Elm Park Methodist Church. Mrs. Gras was an officer in the Loyal Workers Women's group and active with the building committee, both of the church.
On Nov. 5, 1924, she married George Gras Sr. He died Dec. 20, 1967.
Survivors are three sons, George Gras Jr. of Utica, Gerald L. Gras of Bennington, Vt., and Donald C. Gras of Amsterdam; three daughters, Shirley Montemurro of Ft. Edward, Betty J. Robinson of Trumansburg and Barbara A. Grimes of Liverpool; 21 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family, with the Rev. Cal Briggs-Harris officiating. Calling hours are also private. Both will be at the Betz, Rossi and Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Inc., 171 Guy Pk. Ave, Amsterdam. Burial will take place in the spring at Mount Vision Cemetery, Mount Vision.

Marie E. Whiteman
ROSEBOOM — Mrs. Marie E. Whiteman, 72, passed away Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.
She was born April 25, 1927, in Edgewater, N.J., the daughter of Nicholas and Mae (Stefik) Maturo.
On Sept. 15, 1945, she married Stewart A. Whiteman in the St. Thomas Church, Cherry Valley. He predeceased her in 1997.
Marie was a childhood visitor to the Cherry Valley area, where her family had a country home. She came
to live in Roseboom in 1945, when she married Stewart Whiteman.
Marie loved the simple pleasures of life — helping her friends and neighbors, finding a patch of wild strawberries and feeding the birds and deer. She enjoyed the many lovely gardens surrounding her home on East Hill.
She was a member of St. Thomas Church, Cherry Valley.
Survivors include two daughters, Gail Assetto of Ridge, Long Island and Kathy Coughlan of Oneonta; a son, Robert G. Whiteman of Cherry Valley; grandsons, Jesse Coughlan and Nathan Coughlan of Oneonta; and a brother, Dom Maturo of Lakewood, N.J.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Kenneth Swain, officiating. Mrs. Whiteman will be placed in the Ottman Funeral Home's private vault to await spring burial in the Roseboom Cemetery.
Calling hours will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. with prayers at 8 p.m.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
Mary A. Merwin
HOBART — Mary A. Merwin, 91, of Hobart, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at Robinson Terrace in Stamford.
She was born June 19, 1908, in Hobart, the daughter of Frank and Lydia (Grant) Corbin.
She married Raymond W. Merwin on May 14, 1938, in Hobart. Raymond died Dec. 25, 1980.
Mary had been a Hobart resident all of her life.
She was a member of the Township United Methodist Church, and the United Methodist Women of the Township and Hobart churches.
Mary is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law; Dorothy M. Cummings of N. Chatham and Joyce and Robert Wayman of Gilboa; three grandchildren, Karen, Robert Kevin and Daniel; four great-grandchildren, Alicia, Selicia, Daniel and Hayley; a brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Mabel Corbin of Hobart; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 W. Main St., Stamford, with the Rev. Richard Elder, pastor of the Hobart United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in the Township Cemetery, Hobart township.
Friends may call at the funeral home between 9 and 11 a.m. on Saturday.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.
Louisa D. Stevens
SOUTH KORTRIGHT — Louisa D. Stevens, 80, of Rose's Brook, South Kortright, passed away Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.
She was born Dec. 7, 1919, in Delhi, the daughter of Edmund and Annabelle (Rose) Davis.
On Jan. 18, 1941, she married Harold Stevens in South Kortright. He survives, as do a son, Thomas H. Stevens of Leverett, Mass.; a daughter, Susan S. Fabel and her husband, Jon, of Webster; two granddaughters, Kaitlin and Marissa Fabel; a sister, Catherine P. Davis of Stockton, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Stevens was a lifelong area resident and lovingly cared for her home on Rose's Brook.
She was a graduate of Hobart High School, Class of 1937, and attended the State University College of Technology at Delhi.
Louisa belonged to the South Kortright United Presbyterian Church and the Stamford-Harpersfield Senior Citizens.
Graveside services will take place in the spring in Valley View Cemetery, Rose's Brook, South Kortright, at the convenience of the family.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the Hobart Emergency Squad.

Brenda Hammond
ONEONTA — Brenda L. Hammond, 37, of Oneonta, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at the Bassett Health Care Center in Cooperstown.
She was born in Margaretville on Feb. 9, 1962.
For the past 10 years, retiring in May 1999 due to illness, Brenda was employed by the city of Oneonta as a custodian in the public safety building.
She was a member of the CSEA.
Brenda is survived by her loving brother, David Blanchard, of Oneonta, and many friends whose hearts and lives she touched.
A service of celebration of Brenda's life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at 1 p.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, with the Rev. John S. Dawson, Catskill Area Hospice chaplain, officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 11 a.m. until service time.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Vincent E. Secor
PORT EWEN — Vincent E. Secor, 78, a longtime Port Ewen resident, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, following a long illness, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.
He served in the Air Force during World War II. After retirement from STAUO Industries in Kingston, Vincent moved to Florida and recently moved to Maryland, N.Y.
He was born April 23, 1921, in Port Ewen, the son of Harry and Elsie (Vincent) Secor.
Vincent is survived by his wife, Peggy Secor of Maryland; stepdaughter, Dorothy Johnson of Oneonta; and several grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Eileen Gould.
There will be no calling hours for Vincent Secor. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Ruth J. Rabeler
CHELSEA, Mich. — Ruth J. Rabeler, 83, of Chelsea, Mich., and formerly of Oneonta, N.Y., passed away at the University of Michigan Hospital on Dec. 20, 1999.
She was born July 9, 1916, in Port Jervis, N.Y., the daughter of Oscar and Florence (Cortright) Winters.
Ruth had lived at Silver Maples in Chelsea, Mich., since moving from her home in Oneonta, N.Y., this past September.
She graduated from Middletown, N.Y., High School in 1932.
She then worked as an aide at Middletown State Hospital until she entered Syracuse Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1939. After graduation from Memorial in 1942, she left for assignment with the Army Nurse Corps where one year was spent in St. Petersburg, Fla., and two years were spent in the European Theater.
Mrs. Rabeler returned to Syracuse University in 1947, and graduated in 1949 with a bachelor's degree in education and public health. She worked as school nurse in the Oneonta Consolidated Public School system until 1953.
In 1962, she became clinical instructor of the newly formed School of Practical Nursing Oneonta, serving as director from 1967 until her retirement in 1980. She received an master's degree in counseling from State University College at Oneonta in 1970.
She was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church, Oneonta, N.Y., where she had been a Sunday school teacher and a member of the church choir.
In 1951, she married Martin E. Rabeler at the First Presbyterian Church, Unionville, Orange County, N.Y. He preceded her in death in June 1994.
Survivors include one child, Richard Rabeler of Grass Lake, Mich.
A celebration of her life will be held at the Atonement Lutheran Church in the spring 2000.

Percy H. Budine
WALTON — Percy H. Budine, 80, of Walton, died Tuesday evening, Feb. 8, 2000, at Delaware County Countryside Care Center in Delhi, where he had been residing.
He was born on Aug. 29, 1919, to Herman and Nina (Constable) Budine.
He married Gladys LeRoy on Jan. 24, 1939, in Walton, who survives him. Mr. and Mrs. Budine operated a farm on East Brook Road, Walton, for 27 years.
In 1967, they moved into Walton and Percy joined the village street department, working as assistant street commissioner and then as street commissioner, retiring in 1985.
He was a 17-year member of Alert Hose Company No. 2, Walton Fire Department and a former member of the Wakeman Brook Sportsman Club.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Gladys Budine of Walton; four children and their families survive, Dennis (Bonnie Lee) Budine of Unadilla, James (Kathy Beadle) Budine of Walton, Dixie (Kenneth) MacGibbon of Statesville, N.C., and Edward (Debra) Budine of Walton; a sister survives, Betty LaRose of Unadilla; and 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren also survive.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Lana Mae; a granddaughter, Renee Lynn; brothers, Bruce, Donald and Roland; and a sister, Louise Kishbaugh.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at 1 p.m. at Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton, with the Rev. Wayne Muckel, chaplain at Delaware County Countryside Care Center, officiating. Burial will be in Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin, in the spring. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Charles W. Lurenz
WALTON — Charles W. Lurenz, 79, of 1 Elm St., Walton, died Wednesday morning, Feb. 9, 2000, at Delaware County Countryside Care Center in Delhi, where he had been residing.
He was born on Nov. 7, 1920, in Walton, the son of Anthony and Lila (Constable) Lurenz.
He was in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
He married Arlene Smith in Bainbridge on July 25, 1963, who survives him.
He was a supervising inspector at Amphenol in Sidney. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Walton and a charter member of the Elks Club in Sidney.
After his retirement he was active with volunteer work for the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society.
He was an avid cross-word puzzle solver and furniture refinisher.
He is survived by his wife, Arlene in Walton; a daughter, Suzanne Mason of Walton; a brother, Edward Lurenz in Port St. Lucie, Fla.; and a grandson, Cameron Mason. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, at 11 a.m. at Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery in the spring. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m.

Eva M. Rhodes
ONEONTA — Miss Eva M. Rhodes, 85, of Oneonta, died Tuesday night, Feb. 8, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.
She was born Aug. 2, 1914, in Davenport Center, the daughter of Fred and Jessie (Melick) Rhodes.
Eva was the clerk of the board of representatives of Otsego County in Cooperstown and also was the Otsego County auditor for 36 years having retired in 1975.
She was very involved with the Otsego County Woman's Republican Club and for many, many years she was the secretary. She also organized for the Otsego County Republican Committee dinners and their annual luncheons.
Eva had a love for bowling and held offices for the traveling leagues. She loved basketball as well. Eva was on the first Woman's Basketball Team at Oneonta High School. She took great pride in her stamp collection and enjoyed collecting the many different stamps.
Eva was predeceased by her parents and two sisters, Helen P. Rhodes and Inez Rhodes Wheat.
Burial will be in the spring at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, from 1 to 4 p.m. and also Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.
It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to either Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, or to the Upstate Home for Children & Adults, Inc., 2705 State Highway 28, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in loving memory of Eva M. Rhodes.
