Kathryn A. Bissell

ONEONTA — Mrs. Kathryn A. Bissell, 81, of Oneonta, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at the Oneonta Nursing Home.

She was born in Maple Grove on the family homestead on Oct. 16, 1918, the daughter of Roy and Bertha (Lamb) Decker.

Kathryn was married in 1940 to Harry Fred Bissell. He died in 1972.

Mrs. Bissell was a homemaker in her own home in Garrattsville and had worked for Mr. and Mrs. Pickens of Garrattsville and later worked in the post office in Garrattsville for Curtis Steele.

Mrs. Bissell had a special talent for crocheting baby sets and for many years sold them through the Home Spun Shop in Cooperstown and Oneonta.

She was a member of Garrattsville United Presbyterian Church for many years before moving to Oneonta in 1970. She then transferred her church membership to the First Presbyterian Church, Oneonta. Mrs. Bissell worked in the Dawley Room in the Methodist Church issuing Senior Citizens Discount Cards with Mae Sage after moving to Oneonta. She was an active member of the Center City Senior Citizens Club.

Mrs. Bissell is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Lynn Harry and Helen Truesdale Bissell of Oneonta; one brother, John Royce Decker of Florida; one sister, Janice Decker Haskell of Florida; an aunt, Ruth Ferguson Sweet of the Oneonta Nursing Home, Oneonta; and two grandsons, Jeffrey Lynn Bissell and Daniel Fred Bissell, both of Oneonta. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a brother, Clarence Decker.

A graveside service will be held at the family's convenience in the spring of 2000, at Hartwick Cemetery, Hartwick.

There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.

The Bissell family requests contributions be made to the Oneonta Nursing Home Resident Council Fund, 330 Chestnut St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 in memory of Kathryn A. Bissell.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Steven Salamacha

HARTWICK — Steven Salamacha, 92, of Salamacha Road, died peacefully in his home on Monday, Jan. 24, 2000.

He was born on Dec. 31, 1907, in Herkimer, a son of the late Nicholas and Julia Salamacha.

He was raised in the Schuyler Lake area and attended a one-room school house on county Road 16, Schuyler Lake.

He moved to New York City and worked as a window washer for the then newly built Empire State Building.

It was in New York City that he met and married Mathilde Zilling on Oct. 10, 1930. He and his wife moved to RD #1 Hartwick in 1939, and established a dairy farm that he owned and operated until 1971.

Steven loved the land and each season. He enjoyed hunting, sailing, fishing, trapping, and making maple syrup. He was an active man who even at the age of 87 was tending his vegetable garden and cutting wood.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, West Burlington.

Surviving him are his wife of 69 years, Mathilde; a son, Richard K. and his wife, Judy Salamacha of Plant City, Fla.; a daughter, Nancy C., and her husband, George Demeree, of Little Falls; a daughter-in-law, Rosalyn Salamacha of Hammond; 10 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Anna Parzcych of Clinton, Ola Maclean of Burlington, and Mary Iffert of Las Vegas, Nev.

He was preceded in death by a son, Edward S. Salamacha on July 28, 1999; a sister, Aneila Williams; three brothers, John, Joseph, and Henry Salamacha.

Funeral service and interment will be private.

Memorial donations may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs.

Donna Dorsey

SIDNEY — Donna Dorsey, 43, of Sidney, passed away Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at home with her family.

She was born June 21, 1956, in Syracuse, to Dr. Hugh Anthony and Grace (Anderson) Clarke.

Donna attended and was the first black woman to graduate from Niagara University Nursing School as a registered nurse.

She was a member of the Educational Nursing Association and the National Black Woman's Society.

Donna taught classes at the State University College at Oneonta and was the director of Multi-Cultural affairs as well as the assistant director of Admissions.

During Black History Month, she lectured at the Sidney Central School.

Donna was an associate at Manpower, Norwich.

Donna is survived by her husband, Eric Dorsey of Sidney; her mother, Grace Clarke of Fayetteville; four sons, Jason, Terrell, Eric and Quinn of Sidney; her brother and sister-in-law, Vaughn and Shawn Clarke of Potomac, Md.; two sisters and brother-in-law, Prof. Cheryl Clarke of Little Rock, Ark., and Michelle and Douglas Harley of Boardmen, Ohio; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Donna is predeceased by her father, Dr. Hugh Anthony Clarke.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at Sacred Heart Church, Liberty Street, Sidney, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor, officiating.

At Donna's request there will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ronald MacDonald House, 333 Westmoreland Drive, Rochester, N.Y. 14620 or Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Jack E. Constable

SLATE HILL — Jack E. Constable, 59, of Slate Hill, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at the Horton Medical Center, Middletown.

He was born July 21, 1940, in Walton, the son of Dr. Clyde Constable and Alice Ives Constable.

He married Mary Stila Constable.

He lived in Slate Hill for 10 years. He was a truck driver for SWS Cleaning Services, Goshen. He formerly worked for Taggart Electric of Merrickville and R&S Electric of Bloomingburg as an electrician.

Jack is survived by his wife at home; four sons, Clay Constable of Sidney Center, Danny Turner of Florida, N.Y., Kevin Turner of  Texas and John Clayson of  Pennsylvania; one daughter, Karen Scott of  Texas; two sisters, Judy Zewatski of Slate Hill and Sally Fairbairn of Rochester; six grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jack was well-liked by all who met him and was always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needed it. He left many good memories and we will all miss him very much.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at 1 p.m., at the Donovan Funeral Home, 82 S. Church St., Goshen, with the Rev. Virginia Hoch officiating. Interment will be in the Walton Cemetery, Walton, at a later date.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at the Donovan Funeral Home, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Orange, 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, N.Y. 12550 or the American Cancer Society, 419 East Main St., Middletown, N.Y. 10940.

Funeral arrangements are by the Donovan Funeral Home, Goshen.

James S. Howland

OTEGO — James S. Howland, 27, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at his home in Otego.

Jim was born Aug. 9, 1972, in Sidney, the son of Patricia (Shaver) Jarvis and the late Jack E. Howland.

Jim is survived by his mother, Patricia, and stepfather, James Jarvis, of Guilford; a twin brother, Jeffery Howland of Oneonta; a stepsister, Melissa Jarvis of Norwich; several aunts and uncles; and a niece, Katie.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 30 River St., Otego, with the Rev. Alan C. Hatch, pastor of the Otego Baptist Church, officiating. Jim will be placed in the Bookhout private burial vault to await burial in the spring at West Oneonta Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 356 North Midler Ave., Syracuse, N.Y. 13206.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Maren R. Haehnel

ONEONTA — Maren Rebekah Haehnel, 14, of Oneonta, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

She was born Jan. 13, 1986, in Oneonta, the daughter of Michael C. and Maureen (Marshall) Haehnel.

Maren was an eighth-grade honor student in the Oneonta Middle School. Upon graduating from the sixth grade, she received the citizenship and library award. While in the seventh grade, she was active in the drama club, participated in a play and played in the band.

Maren loved music and studied and played the violin and the viola.

However, her greatest attribute was her love for animals. She also took pleasure in writing stories and was chosen to be involved in the high school writing workshop.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and secretary of its Young Women's Association. She was the recipient of the Young Women's recognition award for successfully completing spiritual and service goals. An outdoor enthusiast, she enjoyed participating in the church's girls camp.

Maren is survived by her mother and father, Michael and Maureen Haehnel of Oneonta; her brother, Benjamin Michael Haehnel of Oneonta; her paternal grandmother, Carole Haehnel of  White River Junction, Vt.; her maternal grandmother, Robert and Joan Marshall of Phoenix, Ariz.; and her maternal great-grandmother, Pearl Seegmiller of Ogden, Utah. She is also survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at 4 p.m. in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, West Oneonta, with chapter president, Mark Madero, presiding.

Burial will be in the spring in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

Friends may call on Wednesday evening, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Peace Plantation, RR #3, Box 84, Walton, N.Y. 13856.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Anna C. Mertz

OXFORD — Anna C. Mertz, 103, formerly of Bainbridge, passed away Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at the New York State Veterans Home, Oxford.

She was born to the late John and Margaret Horn Hoffman on Dec. 10, 1896, in Manhattan.

Mrs. Mertz married Wendelin Mertz in 1919. He predeceased her on April 11, 1967.

She was a member of St. John's the Baptist Catholic Church, Bainbridge.

Mrs. Mertz was an avid gardener, who loved her flowers and her home.

She was a loving mother and grandmother.

Mrs. Mertz is survived by her three sons and daughters-in-law, Wendelin and Sandra Mertz of Unadilla, Eugene and Geneva Mertz of Waddington and Raymond and Dolores Mertz of Ocala, Fla.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Gertrude Lerwick of Coventry, Catherine and Robert Davy of Coventry and Rita and Leo Terry of Pine Beach, N.J.; 21 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also predeceased by an infant son, Arthur, and daughter, Margaret Riley.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Fr. Donald Bourgeois, pastor of St. John's the Baptist Church, Bainbridge, officiating.

Friends may call Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, when the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge, in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's the Baptist Church, Bainbridge.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.

William G. Walters

UNADILLA — William G. Walters, 64, of Unadilla, passed away Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born to the late William and Edna Herman Walters on Dec. 6, 1935, in Woodbourne.

Bill served his country from 1953-56, in the United States Marine Corp.

He worked at Nortons Garage, Sidney, and Whitakers, Sidney, and was last employed as a salesman at Walters Car Care, Unadilla. Bill was an avid fan of racing especially the Walters Racing Teams.

He was a member of the Charles L. Jacobi American Legion Post #183, Sidney, and the V.F.W. Corporal R.H. Arrandale Post #7914, Sidney.

Bill is survived by Nancy Green of Unadilla; two sons and daughter-in-law, William Walters of Unadilla and Mike and Kelly Walters of Unadilla; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patty and Russ Hertzler of Schenevus and Penny and Phil Carola of Tampa, Fla.; one sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor and Fred MacDonald; six grandchildren, Chad and William Walters, Courtney Hertzler, Jerry Ruling and Brandon and Michelle Walters; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney at 1 p.m. Friends may call Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.

Dorothy Davis

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — Dorothy Anne "Dot" Davis, 71, of Center Valley, Pa., died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at her residence.

She was the wife of Richard Davis to whom she was married 50 years last April.

Born in Sidney, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Viola (Constable) Goebeler.

She was a teacher's aide at Hopewell Elementary School, Center Valley, Pa., and previously at the Center for Retarded Children in Trenton, N.J. She also worked at Fort Dix Army Base, Fort Dix, N.J., and was a photographic retoucher in Sidney.

She was a member of Faith U.C.C. Center Valley, where she was on many committees as well as the chairperson of the "Kitchen Krew" for 10 years. She was also a member of Upper Saucon Volunteer Ambulance Corps where she was treasurer for eight years.

Dorothy is survived by her husband; daughters, Marilyn Davis of New York City and New Hope, Pa., Dr. Barbara Davis of Palmerton, Pa., Nancy, wife of Dwayne Schantz of Coopersburg, Pa.; son, Richard of Allentown, Pa.; brother, Claude Cook of Unadilla; and sister, Joan, wife of Bernard MacDonald, both of Unadilla; and six grandchildren.

A funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, at 11:30 a.m., with a calling hour from 10:30-11:30 a.m., at the Faith U.C.C. Center Valley, 5992 Route 378, Center Valley, Pa.

Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday at Norcross-Weber Funeral Home, 101B North Main St., Coopersburg, Pa.

Contributions may be made to the Church Memorial Fund.
