Lillian E. Slater

SHARON SPRINGS — Mrs. Lillian E. Slater, 80, of Route 20, died Monday, Jan. 3, at the Bassett Healthcare Facility of Cooperstown.

Mrs. Slater was born July 8, 1919, in Brisbane, Australia, the daughter of William F. and Sophia (Mindham) Warburton.

Mrs. Slater had lived in the United States for many years after growing up in Australia. At one time she was employed at the Empire Restaurant of Howes Cave and later worked at the Schenevus Glove Factory from 1966 to 1973. Mrs. Slater then became employed as a glove inspector for the Ace Glove Factory in Richmondville until 1977.

She was also a housekeeper for Carolina Dunham of North Blenheim for several years.

Survivors include three daughters, Phyllis Snyder of Fort Plain, Gloria Hellijas of Hyndsville and Shirley Slater of Sharon Springs; a son, Leland S. Slater of Sharon Springs; two sisters, Norah Stewart and Eveline May Carter, both of Australia; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Slater was predeceased by her husband, Leland (Bill) Slater, to whom she was married for 49 years. He died April 1, 1992. She was also predeceased by an infant daughter at birth, Barbara Betty, as well as two sisters, three brothers and a nephew, all of Australia.

The funeral service and calling hours will be private. The Rev. Neil Irwin of the North Blenheim Methodist Church will officiate. Spring burial will be in the Middleburgh Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sharon Springs Volunteer Ambulance Squad, Sharon Springs, N.Y. 13459; The Capital District Dialysis Center, 650 McClellan St., Schenectady; or the Albany Regional Dialysis Center, 64 Albany Shaker Road, Albany.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 68 Elm St., Cobleskill.

Fred J. Banks Sr.

SIDNEY CENTER — Fred J. Banks Sr., 91, of Sidney Center, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at the Valley View Manor Nursing Home, Norwich.

He was born Sept. 2, 1908, in the town of Liberty, the son of Edward and Edna (Stickles) Banks.

He was married to Louise Rudolph on Dec. 24, 1930 in Redhill. Mrs. Banks died Dec. 1, 1971.

Mr. Banks for many years owned and operated a dairy farm on Richardson Hill Road in Sidney Center and provided delivery of sawdust to many local farmers in the Tri-Towns area. He was a former member of the Dairymen's League.

Fred is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Florence and Donald Terry of Franklin; four sons and daughters-in-law, Fred Jr. and Kathryn Banks of Franklin, Melvin and Joan Banks of Afton, Kenneth Banks of Binghamton and Lee and Alice Banks of Wake Forest, N.C.; a brother, Lester Banks of McGraw; a half-brother, John Banks; three sisters, Louise and Raymond Ross of Franklin, Annabelle and Lawrence Dickinson of Gansevoort and Alice Wood of Livingston Manor; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Graveside services will be held in the spring in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla, at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla, Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, from 2-4 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Betty B. Lambert

DELHI — Betty B. Lambert, 84, of Delhi, died early Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at her home following an extended illness.

The daughter of James and Margaret (Miller) Brown, she was born Dec. 13, 1915, in Cowdenbeath, Scotland, where she grew up, coming to the United States with her family when she was a teen-ager.

Betty lived in New York City, where she married Carl A. Lambert on May 24, 1939. The couple settled in Uniondale, Long Island, where they lived until 1967, when they moved to Glen Ellyn, Ill., subsequently coming to Delhi in 1981. Mr. Lambert died Aug. 18, 1982.

Betty was an active member of the Delhi Alliance Fellowship, where she was choir director and active in the music program. In previous years, she had also been an active volunteer worker at the Delaware County Infirmary.

A homemaker, her family and church were Betty's focal point in life.

Surviving are three daughters, Carole A. Lambert of Altadina,  Calif., Patricia A. and husband, Christopher Morales, of Newnan, Ga., and Deborah A. and husband, John A. Cook, of Delhi; nine grandchildren, Gregory and Peter Oppenheim, Jennifer Smith, Rachel Spratlin and Kristen, Ian, Collin, Evan and Owen Cook; one great-granddaughter, Emma Smith; one sister, Peggy Quigley of Bountiful, Utah; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call today at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral and committal services will be conducted 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 6, at the Delhi Alliance Fellowship, by the Rev. Wayne E. Muckel, pastor. Burial will be in the Woodland Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Delhi

Alliance Fellowship or Catskill area Hospice.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Harold D. Baldwin

NORTH FT. MYERS, Fla. — Mr. Harold D. Baldwin, 67, formerly of Cherry Valley, passed away Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at his residence in North Ft. Myers, Fla., after a battle with cancer.

He was born Nov. 8, 1932, in Cooperstown, N.Y., the son of Claude and Bertha (Porath) Baldwin.

On July 5, 1959, he married Loraine Lambert in Connecticut, she survives.

Mr. Baldwin was educated in the Cherry Valley Central School.

He served in the United States Army from 1951-1953. During the Korean War he was stationed in Munchin, Germany, and received an honorable discharge as sergeant.

He owned and operated Jensen-Baldwin Oil, owned the former Heritage Inn, Cherry Valley, and was employed by UPS until retiring in 1989, when he moved to Ft. Myers, Fla. where he enjoyed his woodworking.

Survivors besides his wife, Loraine Baldwin of Ft. Myers, Fla., are a son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Marie Baldwin of Salt Springville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Vickie and James Carr of Naples, Fla., and Wendy and Mark Packer of Milford, N.Y.; his mother, Bertha Baldwin of Cherry Valley, N.Y.; grandchildren, Joanne and Cory Baldwin of Fort Plain, Anna Baldwin of Salt Springville, Shawn and Belinda Lawton of Naples, Fla., Samantha and Kyle Packer of Milford, Daniel Carr of Naples, Fla., Ashley Baldwin of New Lisbon, N.Y.; a great-grandchild, Michael Baldwin of Fort Plain; sisters, Mable Vogelien of Cherry Valley, Elsie Moore of Springfield, N.Y., and Sally Anthony of Orlando, Fla.; brothers, Claude Baldwin Jr. and Elmer Baldwin, both of Cherry Valley; sisters-in-law, Maude VanArsdal of Ames and Phyllis Lambert of Fort Plain; brothers-in-law and their wives, Alton and Aileen Lambert, Milton and Barbara Lambert of Ames; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, Claude Baldwin; and brother Clarence (Butch) Baldwin in 1968 in the Vietnam War; and a son, Michael Baldwin in 1997.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Baldwin's memory may be made to the charity of the donors choice.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at 1 p.m. in the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, with pastor Nancy Kozlowski, of the United Methodist Church, Milford, officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Ames Cemetery, Ames.

A calling hour will take place from noon until service time at the funeral home.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Clarence Gilchrist

COOPERSTOWN — Clarence W. Gilchrist, 83, a lifetime resident of Otsego County, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, after a long-term illness.

Clarence was born in Pierstown on April 25, 1916, a son of Clarence H. and Minnie (Mosher) Gilchrist.

He lived most of his adult life on Fly Creek Hill between Cooperstown and Fly Creek with Lucile, his wife of 62 years. He ran a small farm all of his life, worked for Remington Rand in Ilion, managed the Sheffield Creamery in Cooperstown and was a Cooperstown postman for 30 years.

Clarence served as a volunteer fireman at the Fly Creek Fire Department. He was instrumental in establishing the Cooperstown Fish and Game Club, for which he served as treasurer for many years. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Cooperstown serving for several years as trustee.

Clarence was beloved as a husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend to all he came in contact with. He dedicated his life to helping anyone and everyone who needed him.

Clarence is survived by his wife, Lucile Jenks Gilchrist; his daughter, Barbara Livingston, and son-in-law, J. Nicholas Livingston, of Guilford, Conn.; his son, Richard P. Gilchrist, and daughter-in-law, Audrey Gilchrist, of Columbia, Md.; grandchildren, Julie Smith of Guilford, Conn., Amy Taber of Cambridge, Mass., Seth and Mindy Taber of Branford, Conn., Raymond and Christine Grose of Woodbine, Md., Rodney Grose of Baltimore, Md., Lynne Livingston of Baltimore, Md., Sam and Laurie Livingston of Sparks, Md., and Alan Livingston of Bailey,  Colo.; great-grandchildren, Lindsay Grose, Lauren Grose and Jenna Smith; his sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; and many all beloved nieces and nephews.

Clarence was predeceased by his parents, Clarence H. and Minnie (Mosher) Gilchrist; his sister, Anita Judson; and his grandson, Todd Adam Gilchrist of Cherry Valley.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church of Cooperstown, with the Rev. Jeffrey Hale, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in the Richfield Springs Cemetery in the spring at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Todd A. Gilchrist Scholarship Fund, care of Pamela Clarke, 502 Springfield Hill Rd., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326; or to the Memorial Fund at the United Methodist Church of Cooperstown at 66 Chestnut St., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Paul E. Payeur

ALLEGANY — Paul E. Payeur, "Loving Father and Grandfather," formerly of #9848 Brookside Rd., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, in the River Park Health Care Center.

Born May 15, 1920, in Quebec, Canada, he was the son of Emile and Lea Mooney Payeur.

On June 28, 1921, in Quebec, Canada, he married Carmen St. Pierre who passed away April 9, 1999, after 58 years of marriage.

Mr. Payeur as a youth played semi-professional hockey. He was an accomplished ice skater who passed his love of skating onto his daughters.

He began his professional career in the United States military after a short period of hauling steel in big rigs from Pittsburgh to Detroit.

During World War II, he enlisted in the See-Bees, which began his more than 30-year military career, with the U.S. Air Force being the primary branch of service. He was a civil engineer. In World War II, he served with the Pacific Theater. Mr. Payeur was also a veteran of Korea and Vietnam wars.

He retired in Alaska. During his retirement he was active in community service as member of the Elks of Eagle River, the Chugiak Lions Club and the Peters Creek VFW, all in Alaska.

After his wife took ill, who he took care of for two years, they moved to Rushford, to be closer to family in 1998.

Mr. Payeur loved building and making things, having once owned and operated a TV/radio/hi-fi repair. He was also a skilled mechanic and restored and sold automobiles.

He enjoyed fishing and was an avid gardener. He was also a past member of the Masons and Shriners.

Surviving Mr. Payeur are four daughters, Yvonne M. (Frank) Bellis of Houghton, Lee (Bob) Curtis of Republic, Mo., Elaine (Ray) Ulm of Kannapolic, N.C., and Madeline (Jack) Boyd of Hayward,  Calif.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Raymond (Florence) Payeur of the state of  Washington; one sister, Jeanette Cronce of Dearborn, Mich.; and his beloved dog, Sintar.

Mr. Payeur was predeceased by one sister, Lillian Pietraniec.

There will no visitation or funeral.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Dr. Giovanni Schifitto, #1351 Mt. Hope Ave., Suite #220, Rochester, N.Y. 14620, who helps people with Shy-Drager Syndrome.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc., #646 E. State St., Olean.

Stuart W. Hay

ONEONTA — Stuart W. Hay, 68, of 20 Walling Ave., died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta after a long illness.

Stuart was born Dec. 6, 1931, in Oneonta, the son of J. Edward and Helen (Couse) Hay.

Stuart was lifelong resident of Oneonta and member of Main Street Baptist Church.

He graduated from Oneonta High School and served in the United States Army in Korea during the Korean War.

He worked in the business office at the State University College at Oneonta for 30 years and retired in 1990. Stuart served two years as president of the SUCO Golden Alumni Association and was the financial secretary at Main Street Baptist Church for many years.

Stuart is survived by eight cousins, John I. Doughty of  White Bear Lake, Mont., Kendall E. and his wife, Charlotte Hay, of Oneonta, Melville G. Hay of Oneonta, Velma (Hay) Aspinwall of Zephyrhills, Fla., Wanda Ruch of RioRancho, N.M., Beverly Cumm of Tempe, Ariz., Frederick C. Thomas of West Oneonta and James G. and Patricia Sanders of Upper Montclair, N.J.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Saturday Jan. 8, 2000, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. The pastor of his church, the Rev. Gary Bonebrake, will officiate. Stuart will be placed in the Bookhout private burial vault to await burial in the spring at Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Main Street Baptist Church, Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home Oneonta and Otego.

Clara M. Kingsley

GILBOA — Mrs. Clara M. Kinglsey, 82, of Kingsley Road, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at her residence following a long illness.

Mrs. Kingsley was born Dec. 29, 1917, in Prattsville, the daughter of Ray and Martha (Lloyd) Thorington.

Mrs. Kingsley retired in 1974, from the Stamford Central School, where she was employed as the school health nurse.

She was a member of the Broome Center Chapel Church and the Gilboa Historical Society.

Her husband, Alton B. Kingsley, whom she married Nov. 21, 1936, in Prattsville, died July 13, 1995.

Survivors include four daughters and two son-in-laws, Joyce Kingsley and Ruth Truesdell, both of Gilboa, Sandra and Ray Benjamin of Leeds and Linda and Chris Lucas of Middleburgh; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and her dear friend, Tom Mackin of Flagstaff, Ariz.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at the Broome Center Chapel Church, with pastors Paul D. Buhrke and Ronald Perry officiating. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 5, at the Palmer & Shaylor, Inc. Funeral Home, 63 River St., Middleburgh. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery, Prattsville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Conesville Rescue Squad, RD 1, Gilboa, N.Y. 12076.

C. Douglas Rowley

ONEONTA — Dr. C. Douglas Rowley of Oneonta died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born Nov. 7, 1918, in Walton, to Leon and Flora Benedict Rowley.

He was married to Mary Elizabeth Patti on Sept. 28, 1945, in Batavia.

Dr. Rowley was a resident of Oneonta since 1948. He was in the United States Army Medical Corp.

He was a graduate of Walton High School, Hartwick College Class of 1941, Syracuse University College of Medicine Class of 1944. He completed fellowship in Pediatrics at Children's Hospital, Harvard University in 1956, and a residency in Pediatrics at Children's Hospital, Harvard University in 1957.

He was a physician in Oneonta from 1948 until retirement in 1986. General practice: 1948-1956; pediatrics and obstetrics: 1957-1968 — he delivered more than 2,000 babies in the Oneonta area. pediatrics: 1968-1978; emergency medicine, Fox Hospital: 1978-1986. Hartwick College physician: 1948-1968; medical director of the college Health Center: 1969-1986. He was the city of Oneonta health officer and served on the Otsego County Board of Public Health.

He was a member of the Oneonta Country Club, board of directors of the Oneonta Boys Club, American Medical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics and AOA — Phi Beta Kappa.

Dr. Rowley is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Rowley of Oneonta; nine children, Susan Harris and her husband, Emil, of Lowell, Mass., Elizabeth Morley and her husband, Brad, of Laurens, David Rowley and his wife, Gail, of Monticello, Deborah Roth and her husband, John, of Capitola,  Calif., James Rowley of Midland,  Texas, Mark Rowley of Oneonta, Robert Rowley and his wife, Candy, of Oneonta, Rebecca Courtney and her husband, John, of Oneonta and Marsha Albanese and her husband, Sam, of Eagle River, Alaska; 12 grandchildren, Erick, Matt and Leah Fosmire, Kevin, Jennifer and Julie Morley, Brett and Erin Roth, John Douglas Courtney and Bailey, Travis and Casey Albanese; one great-grandchild, Nicholas Fosmire; and three brothers, Ronald Rowley, Esq. of Oneonta, the Rev. Donald Rowley of Nashua, N.H., and Durwood Rowley, Ph.D. of Millis, Mass.

He was predeceased by one son, Eric Scott Rowley, in 1965.

A private service for immediate family members only will be held at the convenience of the family at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Dr. C. Douglas Rowley Scholarship Fund, care of Hartwick College, Oneonta, N.Y. 13820. The scholarship will assist pre-med students at Hartwick College.

Virginia S. Hicks

MILFORD — Mrs. Virginia S. Hicks, 83, of Milford, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 4, 2000, at Bassett Healthcare.

Virginia was born in Milford on Feb. 7, 1916, a daughter of Amos and Eva (Williams) Sweet.

Virginia, who has been a lifelong resident of Milford, graduated from Milford Central School in the Class of 1934.

She married William Hicks Jr. on Aug. 3, 1940, in Oneonta.

Mrs. Hicks was a member of the Milford United Methodist Church, the Milford Fire Department Auxiliary and the Milford Card Club.

She enjoyed music, especially playing the piano, sewing and devoted herself to her granddaughter, Rachel.

Virginia is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Jan and Mickey Carpenter of Milford and Elaine Rosato of Latham; a granddaughter, Rachel Carpenter of Milford; a grandson, Steven Rosato of Latham; and a sister, Evelyn Shaw of Palm Harbor, Fla.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Herbert, James and Frank Sweet.

There will be a graveside service in the spring at the convenience of the family in Milford Cemetery. Mrs. Hicks will be placed in the receiving vault at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Milford Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 359, Milford, N.Y. 13807.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
