Marjorie I. Russell

BOVINA CENTER — Marjorie I. Russell, 81, of Bovina Center, longtime proprietor of Russell's General Store, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, at her home after a long illness.

She was born April 29, 1918, in Bovina Center, the daughter of Cecil H. and Isabell (Irvine) Russell.

A 1936 graduate of Delaware Academy, Delhi, she received her formal education at Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio, graduating in 1940.

She never married and taught school in Ohio for two years. Subsequentlyl, she joined her parents in the operation of the family store in Bovina Center in 1942.

A focal point in the community, the Russells' store was the subject of a feature article in The Daily Star several years ago.

Marjorie continued to run the store after her parents' death until ill health forced her to retire in November 1997.

Ann Morris, a longtime close friend, remembers Miss Russell as a great source of news without a tinge of gossip: "If you wanted to know the weather forecast or what was going on in Bovina, you needed only to stop at the store for the latest updates. Marjorie gave you the facts but she never passed judgment."

Regarding Miss Russell's reluctance to open the store on Sundays, a cousin, Allyn Russell comments, "Marjorie was not a negative legalist on the subject. Sunday was a day of rest for all and a day to take short trips to local points of interest and area restaurants. She was like an unofficial mayor of Bovina. Wherever Marjorie went she represented the town, always in a positive light."

Miss Russell was a lifelong member of the Bovina United Presbyterian Church, actively involved in the Bovina Historical Society, a friend to all and a treasured member of the community.

Surviving are several cousins, including Allyn and wife, Betty Russell, of Concord, Mass., and Lawrence and wife, Georgia Russell, of Schenevus and Eleanor I. Volante of Delhi.

Friends are invited to call on Tuesday at their convenience at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 5, at the Bovina United Presbyterian Church, by the Rev. Edward McNulty. Burial will be in the Bovina Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bovina Historical Society or Bovina Emergency Squad, Bovina Center, 13740.

Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.
