Louise MacNaught
DELHI — Louise M. MacNaught, 80, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 1999, at her home, after a long and courageous struggle with cancer.
Louise was born July 31, 1919, in Whitesboro, the daughter of Roy L. Mealus and Alice (Roberts) Mealus.
The family moved to Walton when Louise was young, and she graduated from Walton High School in 1936. She received her degree in nursing from the Hospital of the Good Shepherd (Syracuse University) in June 1940.
Louise married Marshall D. MacNaught on Aug. 1, 1941. He predeceased her in February 1968.
Louise worked as a registered nurse at Smith Hospital and Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton, as a public health nurse for Delaware County, and from 1962 until her retirement in 1983, was the elementary school nurse teacher at Delaware Academy in Delhi and the Kellogg School in Treadwell.
Louise was on the board of directors of Habitat for Humanity (Delaware County chapter) and was active in the United Ministry of Delhi.
Her many hobbies included bridge, traveling with her good friends, maintaining her home and enjoying her family.
Louise is survived by a daughter, Judith Lattimore of Auburn; three sons, Marshall Jr. of Hamden, Thomas of Delhi and Michael of Delhi. She is also survived by nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, a brother-in-law, Arthur MacNaught of Hamden; and several nieces and nephews.
Louise was predeceased by a son, James David; a sister, Margaret Dann; and a brother, Howard B. Mealus.
Calling hours will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the United Ministry Church of Delhi, with the Rev. Mark Chatterton officiating. Burial will be in the spring at Hamden Cemetery.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the Habitat for Humanity of Delaware County or Catskill Area Hospice.
Arrangements are by the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.
Arthur M. Petrosky
ONEONTA — Arthur M. Petrosky, 88, of Sidney, passed away Saturday, Dec. 25, 1999, at The Hampshire House in Oneonta.
Mr. Petrosky was born to the late Ignatius Neil and Theresa (Zak) Petrovsky on Jan. 12, 1911, in Binghamton.
He married Emmy Lou McCabe on Aug. 12, 1935, in Walton. She predeceased him on July 23, 1989.
Mr. Petrosky was employed as a stock clerk at E.C.D. of Bendix until he retired in 1976.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, a past member of Knights of Columbus, a member of IAM & AW Union, Sidney, and a past member of the Sidney Golf and Country Club.
Mr. Petrosky played semi-professional baseball. He played for the Sidney Cardinals and was signed to play for the Washington Senators.
Mr. Petrosky is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Ron Philpott of Sidney; his son and daughter-in-law, John and Cathy Petrosky of Roanoke, Va.; three grandchildren, Diane Newell, Linda Pickwick and David Philpott; one great-granddaughter, Jennifer Cruz Philpott; and nieces, nephews and cousins
He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Petrovsky; and a sister, Margaret Petrovsky Hall.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at 3 p.m. at C.H. Landers Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor of Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, officiating. Friends may call at their convenience on Wednesday. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery in the spring.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad.
Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Inc., Sidney.
Sophie R. Cole
DELHI — Sophie R. Cole, 84, of West Platner Brook Road, Delhi, died unexpectedly Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, at her home.
The daughter of Polish immigrants, Valentine and Laura (Kasmer) Swantak, she was born Oct. 23, 1915, in the town of Kortright.
Sophie grew up in South Kortright and married Marvin S. Cole on Jan. 7, 1939.
A 60-year Delhi resident, she and her husband owned and operated a dairy farm on West Platner Brook, until his death on April 4, 1991. The farm is now operated by their son.
In earlier years, Sophie had been an active communicant of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Delhi.
Surviving are two sons, and daughters-in-law, Thomas M. and Sandra Cole and Robert C. and Lyn Cole; three grandchildren, Chris, Jody and Jamie Cole; all of Delhi; four sisters, Mary Chapman of Bloomville, Jenny Meeghan of Stamford, Anna Hotaling of Delhi and Helen Sega of Richmondville; two brothers, Joseph Swantak of North Franklin and Frank Swantak of South Kortright; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Antosia Swantak and Effie Ruparshek; and two brothers, Stephen and Michael Swantak.
Friends are invited to call at their convenience at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where funeral and committal services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 28, by the Rev. Bert More. Burial will be later in the Woodland Cemetery.
Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.
Dorothy Beckstead
CHERRY VALLEY — Mrs. Dorothy I. Hogan Beckstead, 83, of Cherry Valley, passed away Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.
She was born Aug. 21, 1916, in Garrattsville, the daughter of the late William and Minnie (Perkins) Tyler. She had four brothers and a sister.
Ms. Beckstead was predeceased on July 26, 1947, by her first husband of 10 years, William J. Hogan. They were married in Midland, Mich.
Survivors include two daughters, Wilma J. Tines of Cherry Valley and Betty J. Vickerson of Cooperstown; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was employed as a drill press operator at Chicago Pneumatics in Utica for 22 years. Upon her retirement, she relocated to Cherry Valley to be near family members and enjoyed the company of close friends.
She was a member of St. Thomas Church, Cherry Valley.
A spring or summer service will be conducted at the convenience of the family. A committal will take place in the Roseboom Cemetery, Roseboom.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cherry Valley Ambulance Squad in her name.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
Carolyn Prouty
BAINBRIDGE — Carolyn Prouty of Bainbridge died on Thursday morning, Dec. 23, 1999, at her residence.
She taught at the Greenlawn Elementary School in Bainbridge for more than 21 years and retired in 1991.
She was a giving and charitable friend who made the care and comfort of others a priority in her life.
She served as a chairwoman of the deaconesses at the Sidney Baptist Church. She sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and led the women's Bible studies.
She is survived by her husband, Floyd Prouty of Bainbridge; a daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Bill Hagen of Santiago, Chile; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dave and Erika Prouty of Oneonta, Andy and Linda Prouty of Bainbridge and Dan and Rebecca Prouty of Rochester; six grandchildren; four sisters, Nancy Gordon, Louanna Watt, Clara Cox and Sylvia Adam; two brothers, Jim and Tim Brown; a great aunt, Lula Beers; and her cousin, Mary Rensen.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the Sidney Baptist Church.
Burial will be in the spring in Greenlawn Cemetery in Bainbridge.

J. Carroll Grosfent
WORCESTER — J. Carroll Grosfent, 79, of Worcester, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, after a short illness.
He was born Oct. 19, 1920, in Worcester, the son of Frank and Clara (Carroll) Grosfent.
Mr. Grosfent was a lifelong area resident, owning and operating a dairy farm in Worcester.
He was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Worcester, a former member of the Worcester Grange and the Eastern Milk Producers. He was a proud pioneer of raising turkeys for the local holiday market.
He is survived by two sisters, Helen McClintock of Worcester and Betty Grosfent of Ellenville; 10 nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and nephews; and a longtime friend, Catherine Gergich of Maryland.
He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters, Pearl Hillis, Dorothy Grosfent, Harold Grosfent, Hazel Mahl, Donald Grosfent, Frank Grosfent Jr. and Edna Grosfent.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at the Second Baptist Church, Main Street, Worcester, with the Rev. William Robert Thompson, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Schenevus, officiating.
Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester at a later date.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 28, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester.

Florence M. Jones
ONEONTA — Florence M. Jones, 93, of Oneonta, passed away Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.
Mrs. Jones was born on June 28, 1906, to Eli H. Proper and Emma Lena (Wood) Proper.
A native and lifelong resident of Oneonta, she was educated in the Oneonta city schools and Lowell Business School in Binghamton.
Mrs. Jones was married to Robert W. Jones on Sept. 21, 1952, and he died on April 27, 1992.
She was employed as a secretary with the Quality Glove Company for many years and later with the payroll office at the State University College at Oneonta. She retired from SUCO Oneonta in 1966.
She was a 70-year member of the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta. In her local church she held several offices and in the district she served as secretary of literature and publications. Also, for 55 years she was a member of the Royal Rebekah Lodge #161. She also served in community organizations including the Oneonta Woman's Club where she served as past president.
Mrs. Jones is survived by one sister, Marion E. McKinney of Oneonta, and predeceased by one brother, C. Robert McKinney, and one sister, Anna P. Lake.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, from the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Joseph Fiske, retired Methodist Minister, officiating.
There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.
Burial will be made in the McKinney Plot, Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta in memory of Florence Jones.

Muriel Pearson
PORTLAND, Maine — Muriel Edwards Pearson, 79, of Portland, Maine, and a summer resident of Perch Lake, Andes, N.Y., died Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, at the Maine Medical Center, Portland, Maine.
She was born on May 23, 1920, in Arena, N.Y., the daughter of Thomas Edwards and Kathryn Hunt.
She married Warner M. Pearson on Oct. 18, 1946, in the Little Church Around the Corner, New York City. He died in 1992.
She worked as a personnel manager and business woman before retiring.
She spent her summer months at Perch Lake, Andes, N.Y., and also lived in Port Charlotte, Fla., and Portland, Maine.
She graduated from Margaretville Central School, she attended Muskingum College in Ohio and the New York University.
Muriel is survived by one daughter, Barbara Pearson of Portland, Maine; one son and daughter-in-law, Warner M. and Marianne Pearson of Zurich, Switzerland; two granddaughters, Anna Christina Pearson and Catherine Ellen Pearson; and cousins.
Memorial services will be held 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, Margaretville, N.Y., with the Rev. R.L. Donahue officiating. Burial will be in the Old Margaretville Cemetery, Margaretville, N.Y.
Contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Delaware County, Route 10, Delhi, N.Y.

Verna M. John
COLONIE — Verna M. John, 61, of Colonie, died suddenly Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at St. Peters Hospital.
Born and educated in Milford, she has resided in Colonie for several years.
Verna had worked as a secretary for New York State Department of Higher Education for more than 20 years.
She enjoyed playing bingo, birdwatching, traveling, reading and going to the movies.
She is the beloved mother of Bill John III of Syracuse, Eileen John Eppelman and her husband, Steve, of Guilderland, and Richard John, Jeffrey John, Steve John and Matthew John, all of Colonie. Grandmother of Ian John and Becky, Cara and Gage Eppelman. Sister of Howdie Cornish and his wife, Mary, of Milford, Jean Renwick of Oneonta, Esther Douglas and her husband, Willard, of Edmeston, Jeri Houlihan and her husband, Bob, of Rotterdam, Joyce Stockholm and her husband, Wendell, of Albany and Joanne Vass of Cooperstown and the late Bernard Cornish. She is also survived by several loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held Thursday morning at 11 a.m. at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Route 155-south of Central Avenue). Calling hours will be Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Milford Cemetery in the spring.

Martha Keck Fry
LITITZ, Pa. — Martha Keck Fry, 92, of Luther Acres Manor, 600 E. Main St., Lititz, Pa., died Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999, at the home following a lengthy illness.
She was the wife of the late Rev. Dr. Harold C. Fry, who died in 1991.
Born in Pottstown, Pa., she was the daughter of the late David and Rosa Christman Keck.
She was a retired French and Spanish teacher, having taught in Stowe, Pa., Pottstown, Pa., Shamokin, Pa., Oneonta, N.Y., and the Hempfield School District in Lancaster, Pa. She was a graduate of Penn State University.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Lancaster.
Surviving is a daughter, Catharine, wife of Frederic Shultz of Lancaster, Pa.; two sons, Harold P. Fry of Kent, Ohio, and David C. Fry of Manlius, N.Y.; a stepson, Richard W. Fry of Chicago; and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at the Chapel of the Good Samaritan, Luther Acres, 600 E. Main St., Lititz, Pa. on Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at 1:30 p.m., with the Rev. Paul A. Trump and the Rev. E.W. Huston officiating. Interment was in Lincoln Cemetery, Ephrata, Pa.

Ruth Monser
Washington, D.C. — Ruth Monser, registered nurse, 72, a clinical specialist in psychiatry at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, D.C., from 1964 to retirement in 1998, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1999, at Georgetown University Hospital after a long illness.
Ms. Monser, a longtime resident of Washington, was born in Oneonta, N.Y., and graduated from Oneonta High School. She received her R.N. degree from St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in New York City, a bachelor's of science degree from Columbia University, and a master's degree from Yale University School of Nursing.
Ms. Monser was a pioneer in the practice and teaching of poetry therapy and contributed greatly to the creative use of literature in the treatment of people with mental illnesses and of children. She received the National Association of Poetry Therapy Pioneer Award in September of this year.
Survivors include two sisters, Violet M. Porter of Southport, Conn., and Anne M. Gellert of New York City; 11 nieces and nephews; and 10 grandnieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Christ Episcopal Church in Red Hook, N.Y., Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999.
