Ellen R. Howland
SANFORD, Fla. — Ellen R. Howland, 84, formerly of Maryland and Schenevus, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at the Elite Care in Sanford, Fla.

She was born Sept. 21, 1915, in Campville, Conn., the daughter of Adolf Joseph and Lucia (Milano) Santoro.

She married Bert Howland in 1946. He predeceased her on March 25, 1995.

During World War II, Mrs. Howland served in the Women's Air Service Pilots, and was a retired flight instructor from Bridgeport, Conn.

Mrs. Howland moved to Maryland in 1968. She has lived in both Florida and Schenevus, since 1992.

Mrs. Howland was a member of the First Congressional Church in Danbury, Conn., and a former member of the Pamona Grange. She was very active in the theater as both an actress and designer, performing out of the Country Club Playhouse in Buffalo, the Suburban Players in Rochester and Lighthouse Players in Ocean City, Md. In 1985, Mrs. Howland started performing children's plays at the Wieting Theater in Worcester, N.Y.

Mrs. Howland is survived by two sons, Ronald Walter Howland and Kurt Howland of Florida; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Jules Santoro of California; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Marie V. McSorley; and a brother, Rudy Santoro.

A graveside memorial service will be held at the Maryland Cemetery on Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at 11 a.m.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Howland to the Salvation Army.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Joseph Colasuonno
WALTON — Joseph N. Colasuonno, 89, of Walton, formerly of Bloomville, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, in Walton.

He was born March 6, 1910, in Manhattan, New York City, the son of Marco and Clara Colasuonno.

Mr. Colasuonno is survived by his wife, Lena, who he married on June 4, 1919, in New York City; two sons, Mark Colasuonno of East Meredith and Victor Colasuonno of Bloomville; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Brothers, Anthony of Greenwood Lake and Thomas of Queens; sisters, Mary Laveccia of Queens, and Anna Schaldi of New Jersey; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

For many years he was a technician responsible for mixing paint colors for Eastern Lactor Co. in the Bronx.

Calling hours will be Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. and after 11 a.m. until service time on Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Clinton Lunt of the Bloomville United Methodist Church officiating.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Edwin B. Sisson
OTEGO — Edwin B. Sisson, 84, of Otego, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born Sept. 16, 1915, in the town of Unadilla, the son of Harry and Ethel Sisson.
He was married to Clara M. Chamberlain, Aug. 28, 1941, in the town of Maryland.

Edwin owned and operated a dairy farm on Sisson Hill Road in the town of Unadilla, until 1970, when he retired from farming and relocated to Otego. He served as caretaker of the Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla, from 1970-1988.

Edwin is survived by his wife, Clara M. Sisson of Otego; a son, Edwin L. Sisson of New Haven, Conn.; two grandchildren, Jennifer J. Sisson and Edwin N. Sisson; and cousins.

He was predeceased by a son, Harry James Sisson; and a sister, Stella Sisson.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at the Otego Baptist Church, with the Rev. Alan C. Hatch, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be later in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

George Waller
STAMFORD — George Waller, 92, of Stamford, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at the Robinson Terrace, Stamford.

He was born Aug. 30, 1907, in Newburg, Germany, the son of George Waller Sr. and Anna Voit.

He married Theresa Wachter.

He was a retired farmer. He came to the United States from Germany in December 1928. Before living in Stamford, he resided at the Grand Gorge Senior Apartments.

George is survived by his wife, Theresa Waller of Stamford; and his granddaughter, Diana Lawrence of Windham.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating.

Cremation will be at Parkview Crematory, Morris.

Calling hours will be prior to the service on Saturday, from 2 p.m. until service time at 3 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Eleanor Smith
MARGARETVILLE — Eleanor Smith, 88, of Margaretville, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at the Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville.

She was born on July 21, 1911, in Syracuse, the daughter of LeRoy David Smith and Genevieve Magee.
Since 1995, she lived in Margaretville; before that she had lived in East Branch.

Eleanor is survived by two sisters, Florence Kenner and Juanita O'Hara; and one brother, John Smith.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. Chester Shew officiating. Burial will be in the Roxbury Cemetery, Roxbury. Calling hours will be prior to the service Monday morning.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Carol T. Parlato
EAST GREENWICH, R.I. — Carol T. Parlato, 37, of Overlook Drive, East Greenwich, R.I., formerly of Lawrence, died Oct. 27, 1999, at Philip Hulitar Hospice Inpatient Center, Providence, R.I.

She was born Oct. 27, 1962, in Omaha, Neb., the daughter Margaret D. (Dollard) Tilton of Larned, Kan., and the late Dr. James R. Tilton.

She was married to Craig S. Parlato.

She was a special education teacher, teaching children with autism from 1994 until moving to Rhode Island in 1999.

She was a graduate of Kansas State University.

Surviving besides her husband and mother are a son, Dominic P. Parlato II at home; three brothers, John D. Cameron of Omaha, J. Rich Tilton Jr. of Laguna Beach,  Calif., and James A. Tilton of Larned; and a sister, Sue Tilton of Larned.

Memorial services will be Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999 in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, East Greenwich, R.I. with the Rev. John Rogers, officiating.

Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.

Contributions in her memory may be sent to St. Luke's Episcopal Church Sunday School Program, Peirce Street, East Greenwich, R.I. 02818.

Funeral arrangements are by Hill Funeral Home, East Greenwich, R.I.

Joleen M. Wilsey
HARTWICK — Joleen (Robin) M. Wilsey, 45, of Hartwick, died on Friday morning, October 29, 1999, at her home.

She was born on July 10, 1954, in Oneonta, a daughter of William and Marion (Sutton) Walrath.

She married Frank E. Wilsey Sr. on June 1, 1973, in Rensselaer.

Robin grew up in Castleton, where she graduated from Maple Hill High School. A resident of Hartwick for the past 18 years, Robin had been employed at Bassett Hospital for the past 10 years, most recently as a technician in the GI Laboratory.

She was a member of the Hartwick Christian Church, a member and first lieutenant of the Hartwick Emergency Squad and a member of the Hartwick Fire Department Company No. l. She especially enjoyed her flower gardens that her parents built for her and collecting toys.

She is survived by her husband of 26 years, Frank E. Wilsey Sr.; a son, Frank E. Wilsey, Jr.; a daughter, Tammy Pashley, and her husband, Leonard, all of Hartwick; her parents, William and Marion Walrath of Maryland; two brothers, Gary Walrath of Hartwick and Chris Walrath of Maryland; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Anna Wilsey of Rome.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at the Hartwick Christian Church with the Rev. Laverne Saxer, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Hartwick Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. when Robin's family will be in attendance.

Eleanor E. Ashe
UNADILLA — Eleanor E. Ashe of Unadilla, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at the New York State Veterans' Home in Oxford after a brief illness. She was 95.

Ms. Ashe was born on Aug. 25, 1904, at the family farm on Case Hill, Treadwell. In 1919, she moved with her parents, brothers and sister by horse drawn sleighs to Unadilla in Otsego County.

She was graduated from Unadilla High School in 1923 and Unadilla Teachers Training in 1924. She taught school in a one-room schoolhouse on Sand Hill for several years before deciding to pursue a career in nursing. After graduating with an RN degree in nursing from Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, she worked as a nurse at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

In 1934, she took the position as school nurse for Unadilla High School and Otego High School. Her brother Everett taught her to drive in the summer of 1934 so she could commute between those two schools in her new 1934 Ford.

When World War II started she enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps and was commissioned a second lieutenant on July 20, 1943. She took her Army training at Fort Dix, N.J., and Fort Benning, Ga. and then served in the European Theater. She was in France, on Utah Beach, a few days after D-Day. She was a front line nurse and saw service with Gen. Patton's forces in the Battle of the Bulge. She was also in Italy for a short time. Toward the end of the war, she was stationed at a field hospital near the German border in eastern France. On VJ day she was in England, preparing to be shipped to the far east. She was discharged in January of 1946 as a first lieutenant.

After the war, Eleanor returned to Unadilla and became a school nurse in the Sidney school system. She cared for her aging parents and was very active in the community, Eastern Star, American Legion, New York State Retired Teachers Association and other organizations. During summers and after her retirement she traveled extensively through the U.S., Europe, Asia and North Africa.

Eleanor was an avid reader and has had many hobbies including gardening, needlepoint, crocheting, ceramics, rug making, antiquing, basket making, canning and preserving, shell collecting and shell painting to name a few.

Ms. Ashe is survived by a brother, Charles Ashe of Fayetteville; a sister, Mrs. Dorothy O'Connor of Indianapolis; as well as nephews Philip Ashe and David Ashe of Oneonta, James Ashe, Eugene Ashe and Andy Ashe of Clifton Park, Alan Ashe and Arthur J. Ashe III of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Bill Ashe of New York City; one niece, Mrs. Barbara Nunweilier of Indianapolis; and several grand-nieces and grand nephews and at least one great-grand nephew, Aidan Ashe of San Francisco.

Two brothers, Everett and Arthur, predeceased her.

Cremation has taken place. A family memorial service will be held at a later date, when Ms. Ashe's remains are interred at the Ouleout Valley Cemetery in Franklin.

Donations in lieu of flowers, may be sent to the Frederick G. Ashe Scholarship Fund, Cornell University, Ithaca.

Arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

John S. Hoes
COOPERSTOWN — Dr. John Spotswood Hoes, 82, of Cooperstown, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at his home.

He was born May 14, 1917 in Yonkers, a son of Ernest and Louise (Nesbitt) Hoes.

Jack was a high school graduate of St. Paul's in Concorde, N.H., a graduate of Yale University and graduated from Columbia University Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons in 1944. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War.

Dr. Hoes married Tarbell Clay on Oct. 12, 1954, in Portsmouth, N.H.

He was a pediatrician at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital for many years and had a private practice in Rome for 28 years.

Jack was a member of the Mohican Club of Cooperstown.

Jack enjoyed playing golf at the Otsego Golf Club, enjoyed photography and loved Cooperstown. He will be remembered as a gentleman, a wonderful father and loving husband.

Dr. Hoes is survived by his wife of 45 years, Tarby; six children, Katrina H. Villenevue of Tupper Lake, Pamela H. Cohen of Old Chatham, Louisa H. Severance of Yarmouth, Maine, John V.B. Hoes of Farmington, Maine, Clay L. Hoes of Minneapolis, Minn., and Alexander S. Hoes of Bedford Hills; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be celebrated on Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at 11 a.m. at St. Agnes Chapel, Christ Episcopal Church, Cooperstown, with the Very Rev. Douglas C. Smith, pastor, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Frances M. Cerra
ONEONTA — Frances M. Cerra, 79, of Oneonta, died Thursday Oct. 28, 1999, at the Oneonta Nursing Home.

She was born Nov. 7, 1919, in Theresa, the daughter of Ray and Tina (Wakefield) Moore.

She married Louis J. Cerra on June 22, 1955, in Brattleboro, Vt.

Frances was a graduate of Oneonta High School, Oneonta Normal School, and the State University at Oneonta, where she received both her bachelor's and master's degrees in education.

For many years, retiring in 1974, she taught sixth-grade in the Morris Central School system,

Frances was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta, along with being a Fox Hospital volunteer. She also served several years on the board of Opportunities for Otsego. She especially enjoyed spending her winters in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

She is survived by her husband, Louis J. Cerra of Oneonta; her children and their spouses, Patricia and Leon Decker of Otego, Jackie and Gary Scavo of Sidney and Gloria Brienza of  Washington, D.C.; and two stepchildren, Frances Bryden and Lew Cerra, both of Oneonta. She also has 10 grandchildren, Russell Decker, Debra Chipman, David Docker, Stacey Cerrone, Scott Scavo, Al and Stephen Grant, Marylee Lee, Scott and Michelle Cerra; and nine great grandchildren.

There will be no formal funeral service or calling hours. A private committal service will take place in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons, at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 7  Washington Square, Albany, N.Y. 12205.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Kermit G. Shapley
ONEONTA — Kermit G. Shapley, 84, of Oneonta, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, after a brief stay at the A.O. Fox Hospital Nursing Home.

Kermit was born in Oxford on Oct. 23, 1915. As a boy he lived on a farm, then moved to Oneonta where he spent most of his life.

Kermit was married for 58 years to Lillian Hebert who passed away on Nov. 22, 1996.

He is survived by four children, Dick Shapley of Tallahassee, Fla., Ron Shapley of Fresno,  Calif., Elaine Bryden of Sidney Center and Mary Budin of Oneonta. Gary Shapley, his second son, predeceased him in 1986. The couple also had 17 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Kerm worked for 14 years as a hostler on the D&H Railroad before and during World War II. His interest in trains and engines remained with him for the rest of his life.

He was a member of the Oneonta Elks and is remembered by his friends as a stock car enthusiast and would travel to the races at local tracks and Daytona, Fla.

Friends are invited to call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta on Sunday Oct. 31, 1999, from 2-5 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

A graveside committal service will be held in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons, at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice or the American Lung Association.

Doris S. Smith
WALTON — Doris S. Smith, 74, of Walton, died Oct. 29 at home in the company of her family.

She was born Nov. 23, 1924, in Syracuse, the daughter of Matthew and Bessie Leachner Scanlon.

Doris married J.R. "Bob" Smith Oct. 11, 1952, in Solvay.

She attended Syracuse University, receiving a bachelor's degree in French and a master's degree in education. She taught school in Cortland, Walton and most recently in Downsville before retiring.

Doris was a member of St. John the Baptist Church in Walton and a member of the Altar Rosary Society and Catholic Daughters of America of her church.

She is survived by her husband, J.R. Smith of Walton; a daughter, Anne Smith, and son-in-law, Bill McQuay of Baltimore, Md.; cousins, nieces and nephews.

A mass of the Christian Burial will be held Monday, Nov. 1, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church, Walton with the Rev. Eugene F. Willis celebrant. Burial will follow in Walton Cemetery.

Friends may call at Clark and Winter Funeral Home, Walton, on Sunday when the family will be in attendance from 7-9 p.m.

Memorials to the Catskill Area Hospice, Elm Street, Delhi in her name would be appreciated.

Arrangements are by Clark and Winter Funeral Home, Walton.

George Waller
STAMFORD — George Waller, 92, of Stamford, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at the Robinson Terrace, Stamford.

He was born Aug. 30, 1907, in Newburg, Germany, the son of George Waller Sr. and Anna Voit.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra officiating.

Cremation will be at Parkview Crematory, Morris.

Calling hours will be prior to the service on Saturday, from 2 p.m. until service time at 3 p.m.
