Alonzo B. Musson
GILBERTSVILLE — Alonzo Bernis Musson, 95, of 277 County Route 4, passed away Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, in The Hospital in Sidney.
He was born in Gilbertsville, a son of the late Samuel H. and Gertrude Hakes Musson and received his education in Gilbertsville Academy. He later attended the State University College of Agriculture and Technology at Morrisville.
On Oct. 19, 1940, he was married to Ruth Smith in Norwich. Along with his family, Alonzo operated the family dairy farm in Gilbertsville.
He was an 80-year member of the Gilbertsville Presbyterian Church, served as town supervisor for the town of Butternuts for 18 years, was chairman of the Otsego County Board of Supervisors, chairman of the County Forestry Committee and was instrumental in the establishment of the county park at Cope's Corners. Alonzo also owned and enjoyed vintage cars.
Surviving Alonzo is his beloved wife of 59 years, Ruth; one son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Anne Musson of White River Junction, Vt.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Martha and Carl Gus of Sauquoit, Dorothy Reed of Kansas City, Mo., and Molly and Charles Hall of Hamilton; and grandchildren, Tamara and Carl Kilborne, Michael Gus, Dana Reed, Heather, Daniel, Travis and Sarah Hall, and Benjamin, Samuel and William Musson. He also leaves several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to Alonzo's memorial service, which will be held on Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at 1 p.m. at the Gilbertsville Presbyterian Church.
Donations in Alonzo's memory may be made to the Gilbertsville Fire Department and Rescue Squad.

Leroy C. Smith
MORRIS — Leroy Clifford Smith, 87, of Morris and formerly of Pittsfield and West Laurens, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta.
He was born Jan. 6, 1912, in Kortright Center, the son of Robert LeGrande Smith and Grace (Beers) Smith.
He married Bertha Comino Smith on March 29, 1941, in Maryland.
He was a well-known dairy farmer who had operated farms in the towns of Pittsfield and West Laurens.
He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European and the Asiatic theaters of operations, earning three battle ribbons.
He was a member of the Morris Veterans Auxiliary, and had served as a trustee of the West Laurens Community Church and was a longtime member.
He was an avid baseball player and loved to drive trucks.
Leroy is survived by his wife, Bertha; four daughters and their spouses, Imogene Schlee and her husband, Richard, of West Laurens, Donna Falsetta and her husband, Al, of West Laurens, Carolee Riddell and her husband, Robert, of Oneonta and Tina Page and her husband, Bruce Sr., of New Lisbon; three sons and their spouses, Gary Smith and his wife, Linda, of Morris, Bruce Smith and his wife, Susan, of Mount Vision and Jeffrey Smith of Schenectady. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Dena Bookhout and spouse, Terry, Joana Schlee, Candace Smith, Jason Smith, Kelly Riddell, Marci Riddell, Randi Riddell, Valery Smith, Donald Smith, Earl Smith, Megan Falsetta, Brandon Falsetta; and one great-granddaughter, Lexi Bookhout; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a son, Clifford Smith.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, with the Rev. Kip Stratton and the Rev. Wilfred Lyon, officiating. Burial will be in the Maryland Cemetery, Maryland. Calling hours will be held on Monday, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Those who wish are asked to donate to the West Laurens Community Church in his memory.

Thomas Garbera
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Thomas Garbera, 85, of 3831 state Route 20, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, in Valley Health Services, Inc., Herkimer.
He was born on March 6, 1914, in Uniondale, Pa., son of the late Alixis and Annie Elishz. A lifelong area resident, he was raised and educated in Schuyler Lake.
On July 29, 1942, he married the former Isabella Duncan in St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs.
An honorably discharged U.S. Army veteran, he served our country during World War II, fighting in Germany.
For more than 40 years he worked for the Sure Catch Fishing Tackle Co., Richfield Springs, retiring as supervisor in 1976.
Tom was an outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs, the Hugick, Purcell and Shepardson American Legion post, Richfield Springs, and the West Winfield Veterans of Foreign Wars post.
Surviving him besides his loving wife of 57 years, Isabella, are three sons, Edward and his wife, Kathy, Garbera of Brandon, Fla., Francis and his wife, Mattie, Garbera of Richfield Springs and Philip Garbera of Dallas, Texas; two brothers and their wives, Nicholas and Ida Garbera of Schuyler Lake and Harry and Barbara Garbera of Richfield Springs; three sisters, Mary Seaman and her husband, Lee, of Richfield Springs, Katherine Booth of Thomaston, Conn. and Ann Vallee of Utica; four grandchildren; four-great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Michael, Peter and William Garbera, and a sister, Julie Skramko.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Terance Healy, officiating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Members of Hugick, Purcell and Shepardson American Legion Post, Richfield Springs are asked to meet at the funeral home this evening at 7:30 for services.
Shirley V. Rein
WORCESTER — Mrs. Shirley V. Rein, 66, of Charlotteville Road, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at the Robinson Terrace Nursing Home in Stamford.
Mrs. Rein was born May 12, 1933, in Morristown, N.J., the daughter of Edward and Olga (Wolf) Erhard.
Mrs. Rein was a homemaker all of her life. She moved to Worcester in 1984, from Liberty Corner, N.J.
Mrs. Rein was a member of the First Summit Baptist Church of Charlotteville.
Mrs. Rein is survived by her husband, Elmer J. Rein of Worcester; a son, David Lounsbury of Liberty Corner, N.J.; a daughter, Linda Waldruff of Liberty Corner, N.J.; four stepsons, David Rein of Bear, Del., William Rein of Mechanicville, Pa., Peter Rein of Hickory, N.C., and Michael Rein of Wakefield, Va.; two sisters, Olga Kostetansky of Easton, Pa., and Edna Fortenbacker of New Vineyard, Maine; two brothers, Eddie Erhard of Manville, N.J., and Nelson Erhard of Whitehouse Station, N.J.; a granddaughter, Margaret Rein of Bear, Del.; two grandsons, Herbie Waldruff of Liberty Corner, N.J. and Matthew Rein of Bear, Del.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 68 Elm St., Cobleskill. Officiating will be the Rev. Robert Deugan of the First Summit Baptist Church. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 6, at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Charlotteville Cemetery.

John (Albert) Little
DELANCEY — John (Albert) Little, 67, of Fall Clove Road, DeLancey, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at home.
John was born Jan. 17, 1932, in the town of Andes, the son of John Gregg and Irene Townsend Little.
He was married to Betty Decker in Arkville on June 25, 1955.
A lifelong resident of Fall Clove, DeLancey, Albert enjoyed dairy farming and the Delaware County Fair. He was an avid hunter and in his early years worked constructing the Pepacton Reservoir Tunnel and dairying with his father. Then he went to work with the Delaware County Highway Department as a heavy equipment operator.
Albert was member of Cabin Hill Presbyterian Church, Tremperskill Rod and Gun Club and in school belonged to Future Farmers of America.
Surviving are his wife, Betty, of DeLancey; daughter and son-in-law, Jean and James Bright of Delhi; son, John W. of DeLancey; his mother, Irene Little of DeLancey; four grandchildren, Christine and Larry Miller of Hobart, Gregory (Gregg) Forsman of Delhi, John Ryan Little of DeLancey and Elizabeth Marie Little of DeLancey; two brothers, Charles of Franklin and Robert of DeLancey; three sisters, Doris Stevens of DeLancey, Carrie Ingram of Davenport Center and Beatrice Davis of Port Crane.
His brother Richard predeceased him in 1997.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at 1 p.m. at Cabin Hill Church with the Rev. Daniel McCollister officiating. Burial follows in Andes Cemetery.
Friend may call at the Jester-Stanley Funeral Home in Andes on Tuesday, where the family will be in attendance from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Memorials to the Cabin Hill Presbyterian Church in his name will be appreciated.

Eugene Kranitz
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Eugene Kranitz, 92, of 37 West Main St., died on Saturday morning, Oct. 2, 1999, in the Welcome Home Adult Care Facility, Richfield Springs.
He was born on Dec. 17, 1906, in Hungary, son of the late Joseph and Mary Tones Kranitz. As a young boy, Eugene came to this country with his family. He was raised and educated in New York City.
For many years he worked as a shipyard worker at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, retiring in 1965.
A resident of Richfield Springs since 1993, he came here from Woodside, Queens.
Surviving him are a brother, Frank and his wife, Geraldine, Kranitz of Richfield Springs; three nephews, Alex Gombar, Phillip Collins and Frank Kranitz; four nieces, Cassandra Collins, Cheryl Collins, Linda Collins and Geraldine Krull.
He was preceded in death by his brother Joseph Kranitz this past March and his sister Martha Gombar.
A funeral service will be on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs. The Rev. John Dixon Bartle, rector of Saint John's Episcopal Church, Richfield Springs, will officiate. Interment will follow in Springfield Center Cemetery. The family will be present at the funeral home to receive relatives and friends one hour prior to the funeral service (1 to 2 p.m., Wednesday).
Memorial donations may be made to the Richfield Springs Volunteer Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Anthony J. and Arthur R. Avolio
NEW BERLIN — Anthony James and Arthur Roland Avolio of New Berlin died on Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, in Albany.
Anthony James and Arthur Roland were born earlier on Sept. 30 in Albany, the sons of David and Kimberly (Tuttle) Avolio.
A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family, with the Rev. Charles Taylor of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, New Berlin.

George Karl Sanly
ALBANY — George Karl Sanly passed away suddenly of a ruptured peptic ulcer on Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, at his residence in the Dewitt Clinton Senior Complex.
George was born on Feb. 12, 1953, at the M.I. Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, the son of Dr. George Traver (deceased) and Elna B. Sanly.
He graduated from the Oneonta High School in 1973, and attended the State University College of Technology at Delhi.
After traveling for an extended time throughout the United States, George entered the Army in 1978, served in Germany and was honorably discharged in 1980. George worked as a health-care provider at the Dewitt Clinton, caring for those who were disabled.
He will be greatly missed by those whose life he touched. George was a very considerate and generous person, always thinking of others first and acting on behalf of others before himself. During his lifetime, George was an avid sportsman, participating in both summer and winter skiing when he was able.
In addition to his mother, Elna, George is survived by his two sisters: Cheryl Ann and William Roseland and children, Elizabeth, Joshua, Michael and Sarah, a stepdaughter, Nancy and Chip Smith and Ryan; and Susan Elaine and James O'Connor and children, Serina, James and Daniel. He is also survived by two aunts, Virginia and Walter Balfour of Chatham and Joan Cook of Oneonta and many cousins.
George was cremated at the Oakwood Cemetery in Troy and his cremains will be interred in the Sanly family plot at Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at 4:30 p.m. at the First Methodist Church, with the Rev. William Bouton officiating.

Harvey Sherwood
VEGA — Harvey C. Sherwood, 80, of Vega, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital.
He was born April 23, 1919, in Vega, on the family homestead; the son of Floyd Sherwood and Ora Ballard.
He married Flora Davis on Aug. 9, 1939, in Margaretville.
He was in the Army during World War II. He started dairy farming in 1945, at the family homestead, and lived his entire life on the homestead.
He was the present operator of the Roxbury transfer station. He was a member of the American Legion Ralph S. Ives Jr. Post 1785, for 53 years; the Roxbury Senior Citizens; and the Eastern Milk Producers.
He was a very community-minded person, serving as a fire commissioner for 35 years for the Roxbury Fire District. He was a former town of Roxbury assessor for 35 years, and served as councilman for eight years.
Harvey is survived by his wife of 60 years, Flora Sherwood of Vega; two sons, Gary and wife, Kathy Sherwood, of Verona and Rande and wife, Susan Sherwood, of Vega; seven grandchildren, Chris and wife, Stephanie Sherwood, David and wife, Kelly Sherwood, Jennifer Rossi and husband, Ryan, and Michael, Rachel, Bobby and Karey Sherwood; four great-grandchildren, Carly, Caleb, Carin and Taylor; two brothers, Francis and wife, Betty Sherwood, of Vega and Julian and wife, Pat Sherwood, of Vega; uncle, Bill Ballard and wife, Ruth, of North Bay; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at the United Methodist Church, Roxbury, with the Rev. Phyllis Skidmore officiating. Burial will be in the Vega Cemetery, Vega.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m., when the family will be in attendance. Friends may call at their convenience after 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

Catherine E. Rosa
MARGARETVILLE — Catherine E. Rosa, 78, of
Margaretville, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital.
She was born Aug. 27, 1921, in Margaretville, the daughter of Casper Bellows and Myra Sanford.
She married Orvil A. Rosa in February 1941, in Margaretville. They were married for 58 years. Catherine and her husband owned and operated a dairy farm from 1941-1957. Then from 1957-1988, she did the bookkeeping for her husband's contracting business.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Margaretville, and the Order of the Eastern Star.
She graduated from old Margaretville High School in 1939.
Catherine is survived by her husband, Orvil A. Rosa of Margaretville; three daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Robert Smith of Fort Plain, Joyce and Bursie Knapp of Arnold, Mo., and Sally and Micky Olsen of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sons, Raymond, and daughter-in-law, Melody Rosa of Womelsdorf, Pa., and Jack Rosa of Margaretville; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Virginia McCumber, Mildred Heller and Phyllis Dickman; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at the United Methodist Church, Margaretville, with the Rev. Ralph Darmstadt officiating. Burial will be in the Margaretville Cemetery, Margaretville.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Leora L. Radley
ONEONTA — Mrs. Leora "Lee" Louise Radley, 87, of Oneonta, died Monday morning, Oct. 4, 1999, at the Oneonta Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center, Oneonta.
She was born Aug. 18, 1912, in Decatur, the daughter of Makley W. and Myrtle (Webster) Haines.
Lee graduated from Oneonta High School the Class of 1932. She has lived in the Oneonta area since she was a small child and has lived here since. She worked for East End Grocery for 10 years and was a cashier at the Grand Union for 23 years, until her retirement in 1979.
Lee was a member of the First Baptist Church of Oneonta.
Lee is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Bruce Downie of Oneonta; one son and daughter-in-law, Garth and Barbara Radley of Charlotte, N.C.; six grandchildren, Jim and Andra Downie of Boulder, Colo., Mike and Wendy Downie of Oneonta, Alan and Tricia Downie of Blacksburg, Va., Steven and Susan Radley of Huntersville, N.C., Lisa Radley of Boston, Mass., and Gregg Radley of Denver, Colo.; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Leora was predeceased by one sister, Mrs. Vena Pidgeon.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at 1 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Royal Mattoon, pastor of the Wesleyan Church of Oneonta, officiating.
Burial will be at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.
There will be no calling hours.

Helen Petrisak
PORT RICHEY, Fla. — Helen Petrisak, 80, of New Port Richey, Fla., died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, at home in New Port Richey.
She was born in Cooperstown, N.Y., and moved to New Port Richey from Binghamton, N.Y., in 1987.
She was an information supervisor for Bell South Telephone Co. She was of the Methodist faith. She was a member of the Retired Telephone Pioneers of America.
Helen is survived by her husband, George Petrisak of New Port Richey, Fla.; her daughter, Joan Fancher Kellner of Hudson, Fla.; her brother, James Winnie of Ney, Ohio; her sisters, Laura Eldredge of Buel, N.Y., Marion Rupasiak of Cooperstown, N.Y., and Sarah Jane O'Brien of Laurens, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Doris A. James
ROCHESTER — Doris A. James, 69, of Rush, passed away Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, at Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester.
She was born March 23, 1930, in DeLancey, the daughter of the late Archie and Letha (Hunt) James, lifelong residents of the area.
In 1949, she married Anthony J. Gerasia of Albany, who predeceased her in 1978.
Ms. James was a 1948 graduate of Delaware Academy, Delhi, and a 1979 graduate of Genesee Community College with an associate of arts in business and marketing.
She was a hairstylist in the Albany area for many years before moving to Hamden. She later moved to Rush in 1980, near her oldest daughters. Ms. James was an artist and writer. The subject matter of her works often related to growing up in the Catskill Mountains of New York and her love for this area. She painted many landscapes, her favorites being old barns and the family homestead in DeLancey.
She was a member of the Henrietta Art Club and exhibited her work at many events including the University of Rochester Memorial Art Gallery Clothesline Arts Festival. Over the years, Ms. James' stories and poems have been published in the Catskill Country magazine.
Doris loved her family, home, flowers, gardens, birds and especially her Dalmatian, Dali.
Ms. James is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Rosemary G. and Richard J. Roberts of Rush, Theresa A. and Jonathan A. Goldstein of Rush and Toni L. and Steven W. Watkins of Hamden. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Carrie D. Roberts and Andrea Watkins of Hamden, and Lauren and Benjamin Goldstein of Rush; one sister, Margaret L. (Maggie) DiJiulio of DeLancey; two brothers, Robert D. James of LaPalma, Calif., and Lloyd E. James of Delhi; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
A memorial service and interment will be held at the end of October in Hamden.
In her memory, contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.
