Margaret Dean
NORWICH — Margaret Wickes Dean, 96, of the Gilmore Health Care Facility, Norwich, and former resident of Masonville, passed away at her home on Monday, July 26, 1999, in Norwich.
She was born to the late Robert and Emma (Durr) Wickes on Nov. 23, 1902, in Troy.
Margaret married Wilton G. Wickes. He predeceased her in June 1952. She then later married Frank O. Dean. He predeacesed her in April 1968.
Margaret was a member of the Masonville Federated Church, Masonville. She was very proud of her family and enjoyed traveling, camping and took great pride in her knitting for her children and grandchildren.
Margaret is survived by three sons, Wilton R. Wickes of Sun Lakes, Ariz., Frank E. Wickes of Feura Bush and Paul D. Wickes of Bainbridge; five daughters, Jane Emerson of Sidney, Marjorie Dean of Masonville, Barbara Du Mond of Woodstock, Ga., Janet Repaal of Bear Lake, Ill., and Claudia Bowen of Sidney; one stepdaughter, Marguerite Lord of Vestal; two brothers, Egbert Wickes of Latham and Robert Wickes of Mechanicsville. She was a grandmother of 21 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 29, 1999, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 8 p.m., with the Rev. Harry W. Palmer of Charleston, W.Va., officiating.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday prior to the service. Burial will be held on Friday, July 30, at Greenville Cemetery, Greenville at 1 p.m., with the Rev. J. Alvin Mosher officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Masonville Federated Church, Masonville.

Alice T. Hammond
ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Alice Teresa Hammond, 71, of Annapolis, Md., and formerly of Oneonta, N.Y., died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, at Annapolis, Md., of complications from surgery.
She was born in New York City. She lived in Oneonta, N.Y., for many years where she and her late husband, Douglas Hammond, owned and operated The Evening Inn on Route 7. She moved to Annapolis, Md., in 1986, where she resided with her sister, Jean Ludwig.
Alice was a fun-loving woman who enjoyed many good times and good friends. Her favorite pastimes were reading, traveling, gourmet cooking, crossword puzzles and a worthwhile debate.
Alice is survived by her much loved family including Joy Keller of Las Vegas, Nev., Dawn Horner of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., John Hammond of Sidney, N.Y., and Michael Hammond of Columbia, Md.; her sister, Jean Ludwig of Annapolis, Md.; a nephew, John Ludwig of New York City; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, Skip Hammond in 1974.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 31, 1999, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons, N.Y.
Friends may call at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, when the family will be in attendance.

Ruth Miller
HAMDEN — Ruth Miller, 83, of Hamden, passed away at home on Monday, July 26, 1999.
She was born Dec. 31, 1915, in Hamden, the daughter of Vernard and Hazel (Densmore) McDonald.
She was first married to Clifford Wyman in 1946, he died in 1960. She then married Paul Miller in 1965, and he passed away in 1996.
Mrs. Miller was employed as a baker at the State University College of Technology at Delhi for many years and was a cook at the Delaware County Sheriff's Department under Wendell Young. She was a member of the Hamden Presbyterian Church, Ham-Del Craft Club, the American Legion Women's Auxiliary, Delhi, and the 27th Division of the Women's Auxiliary of Binghamton.
Surviving her are two sisters, Mrs. Aubrey (Arlene) Jester and Mr. and Mrs. Clyde (Agnes) Miller; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Coklin; three stepchildren, Mr. Hank Miller and Mary, Mr. and Mrs. James Curtain, and Ms. Lucy Roadarmel; and several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and grandchildren. She was "aunt" to numerous area children and a caring, giving person to everyone, and her faithful dog, Cassie.
A brother, Arthur McDonald and a sister, Mrs. Ralph (Dorothy) Clark and a stepson, Richard Miller, predeceased her.
Memorial services will take place on Friday, July 30, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Rev. Bert More officiating. Calling hours will be Thursday, July 29, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Contributions in her memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice or the Delaware County Humane Society, Delhi.

Arlene Rehbein
LAKELAND, Fla. — Arlene Rehbein, 75, of Lakeland, Fla., and formerly of Grand Gorge, died Friday, July 23, 1999, at The Arbors in Lakeland, Fla.
She was born Oct. 10, 1923, in Grand Gorge, the daughter of the late Fred and Lillian Houck.
Arlene was married to Edward Rehbein and resided in Grand Gorge, N.Y. They moved to Lakeland, Fla., in 1985, after retiring from their deli business, the Rehbein Grand Gorge Deli.
Arlene is survived by her husband, Edward of Lakeland, Fla.; her daughter, Carol Lyn Haight of Bath, N.Y.; son, Gary of Lakeland, Fla.; brother, Kenneth Houck of Palm Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Connie.
A memorial service will be held at the Grand Gorge Cemetery on Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999, at 3 p.m.
Arrangements are by the National Cremation Society, Lakeland, Fla.
Virginia Scanlon
COOPERSTOWN — Virginia Scanlon, 74, formerly of Maryland, died Monday, July 19, 1999, at The Meadows, Cooperstown.
She was born April 23, 1925, in Cooperstown Junction, the daughter of John and Clara (Morris) Scanlon.
She was a lifelong area resident. Virginia attended the Cooperstown Junction United Methodist Church.
Virginia is survived by two sisters, Velma Davis of Richmondville and Doris Kenik of Oneonta; a brother, Gerald Scanlon of Brooksville, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by four brothers, Maurice, Kenneth, Donald and John Jr.; and two sisters, Mary Michaletz and Ruth Dulkis.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, July 29, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus. A graveside service will be on Friday, July 30, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the Maryland Cemetery with the Rev. Rodney E. Johnson, pastor of the Cooperstown Junction United Methodist Church, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family request contributions be made to the Cooperstown Junction United Methodist Church.
Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.
Mary B. Tuttle
HOBART — Mary B. Tuttle, 87, of Delaware County Countryside Care died Monday, July 26, 1999, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.
She was born Nov. 22, 1911, in the town of Colchester, the daughter of Albert and Amy (Gavette) Thorington.
She was married to Ralph Tuttle on Dec. 24, 1929, in Delhi. He passed away in 1983.
Mrs. Tuttle was a housewife in Hobart. She belonged to the Hobart United Methodist Church.
Surviving her are four children, Albert Tuttle of Chatham, Helen Stout of Florida, Shirley Finch of Colorado and Margaret Finch of Stamford; sisters, Peg Tyler and Laetta Monsees of Florida, Ann Sonneborn of Washington; and brothers, Chester Thorington of Delhi, John Thorington of Prattsville, Gerald Thorington of Rushford; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Two grandchildren predeceased her.
Funeral services will take place Saturday, July 31, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the Hobart United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Elliot Oakes officiating. Calling hours will be Friday, July 30, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. Burial will take place at the Bovina Cemetery.
Contributions in her memory may be made to Delaware County Countryside Care, Delhi.

William Jewett Dyer
SOUTH KORTRIGHT — William Jewett Dyer, 79, of Rose's Brook died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, at home.
He was born March 24, 1920, in Kortright, the son of George R. and Anabel (Cairns) Dyer.
He was married to Mrs. Alyce Nesbitt Dyer, currently of Berkley, Calif. in 1946. On Dec. 23, 1977, he married Dorothy Robertson Roy.
Mr. Dyer was a member of the Army Air Corp from March 19, 1940 until 1945, during that time he was a bombardier with the 385th Bomb Group and received the Purple Heart in 1944. His employment was with Bendix in Sidney, where he was an automatic screw machine operator.
He belonged to the Mason's Freedom Lodge No. 324, Unadilla; American Legion Post No. 183, Sidney; and Veteran of Foreign Wars Post No. 7914, Sidney.
Surviving him are his wife, Dorothy at home; three children, James W. Dyer of Tulsa, Okla., Donald Dyer of Rose Common, Mich. and Chief William Dyer, stationed in Guam; four stepchildren, Dorothy Roy Kemper of Plano, Texas, Robert H. Roy of West Chazy, Patricia Roy Bleimeyer of Germantown, Tenn. and Christine H. Roy of South Kortright; brothers and sisters, Lillian D. Mason of Gilbertsville, Robert Dyer of Gilbertsville, Harold Dyer of Milford, Lucille D. Cambell of Unadilla, Glen Dyer of Jackson, Mich. and Betty Dyer Carr of Woodstock, Va.; and four stepgrandchildren, Janine D. Adamski of Richardson, Texas, Theodore Adamski of Sherman, Texas, Robert A. Roy and Steven J. Roy of West Chazy.
A son, Ronald Dyer, predeceased him.
Memorial services will take place on Saturday, July 31, 1999, at 2:30 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart, with the Rev. Elliot Oakes, officiating.
There will be no calling hours.
Burial will take place at Rose's Brook Cemetery.
Contributions in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Beatrice Clark
ONEONTA — Beatrice Manning Clark, 94, of Binghamton, beloved mother and grandmother entered into the presence of the Lord, Wednesday, July 28, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta.
She was born Aug. 29, 1904, in Binghamton, the daughter of Martin and Mamie Manning.
She married Clarence Eston Clark on Oct. 1, 1924, in Endicott. He died Aug. 6, 1986.
Mrs. Clark was formerly of Binghamton, and then a longtime resident of the Unadilla-Sidney area. In recent years she has been a resident of A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta.
She was a member of the Unadilla Baptist Church. She was retired from the former Bendix Corp. in Sidney.
Beatrice is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and Robert Harris of Liverpool and Grace and Norman Lindsley of Sidney; two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Mary Clark of Dunedin, Fla., and Jack and Marjorie Clark of Oneonta; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two grandchildren and a brother, John Manning.
Interment will be in the Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla. Private memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family.
There will be no calling hours.

Russell L. Hanwick
OTEGO — Russell L. Hanwick, 54, beloved husband and father, went home to be with his Lord, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, July, 28, 1999.
He joins his father, Lawrence, and sister, Phyllis, in glory.
He was born in Huntington, Long Island, to Lawrence and Sigfrid Hanwick on Sept. 14, 1944.
He served in the Vietnam War (E5) and worked for Grumman Aerospace in Calverton, for more than 25 years. He was past master of the Riverhead Masonic Lodge.
For the past 6½ years he lived in Otego and is survived by his wife, Gabrielle, and his three children, Lauren, Bryan and Jason. Also surviving are his mother, Sigfrid Florence Hanwick; his brother, Lee Hanwick; and several aunts, uncles and nephews.
He attended Living Water Faith Fellowship, where there will be a memorial service on Saturday, July 31, 1999, at 4 p.m. Refreshments will follow. His remains will be buried with military honors at Calverton National Cemetery on Long Island.

Ruth Kehr
WALTON — Ruth Kehr, 77, of 14 Benton Avenue, Walton, died Wednesday afternoon, July 28, 1999, at Delaware Valley Hospital.
She was predeceased by her husband, Philipp; a son, Charles; granddaughter, Kristia; and sister, Helen Van Wyk.
Ruth is survived by her three children, Philipp (Karen) Kehr of Salisbury, N.C., Beverly (Robert) Harrison of Walton and Curtis (Janice) Kehr of Walton; daughter-in-law, Patricia Stanton Kehr of Chesser, Ga.; her grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 30, 1999, at 10 a.m. at Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware streets, Walton. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc. on Friday evening, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Harold H. Hollis
COOPERSTOWN — Harold H. Hollis, 85, of Walnut Street in Cooperstown, died Thursday evening, July 29, 1999, at his home.
He was born July 11, 1914, in The Thanksgiving Hospital in Cooperstown, a son of LaVence and Mary E. (Heatgate) Hollis.
He married Virginia Sparger on May 24, 1943, in Spencer, N.C. Mrs. Hollis died on July 11, 1985.
Harold was raised in Cooperstown and graduated from Cooperstown High School with the Class of 1932. He later graduated from Albany Business College. A veteran of the United States Army Air Corps, he served his country as a weather officer and forecaster during World War II. Following an honorable discharge, he continued as a journalist in the United States Air Force Reserves, attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel.
Harold embarked on a lifetime career in the newspaper business at the age of 7, peddling two-penny summer editions of The Glimmerglass. He eventually joined the staff of the weekly newspaper, The Freeman's Journal, rising to the rank of managing editor in a career which spanned 36 years. He also served as editor of Cooperstown's other weekly newspaper, The Otsego Farmer.
Throughout his life, Harold displayed a remarkable commitment to many local institutions and causes. He was currently serving as a member of the board of directors of the Farmers' Museum, the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home and the Lakewood Cemetery Association. An honorary director of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, he had served on the board of directors from 1969 until 1993. In addition, Harold was a member of the Village Board of Trustees from 1966 until 1972 and from 1976 until 1982 and served as mayor for four terms; 1972-73, 1982-84 and 1986-1992.
Harold's tremendous dedication to community affairs also extended to Bassett Healthcare. A member of the Cupola Society, he joined the Friends of Bassett two years after its creation in 1968, served as Friends president from 1976 until 1988 and had sat on the board of directors since 1968.
A U.S. weater forecaster for 50 years, Harold enjoyed tracking the area's weather patterns and was proud to have recently been presented with the Thomas Jefferson Award from the National Weather Service for maintaining one of the longest continually operating weather stations in the country.
Harold was a member of Christ Church in Cooperstown, where he had served as a warden and was a member of the Vestry, Financial and Building Committees. He was also a member and past master of Otsego Lodge No. 138, Free and Accepted Masons, Otsego Chapter No. 26, Royal Arch Masons, the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 and the Clark F. Simmons American Legion Post No. 579, all in Cooperstown. A member and past president of the Cooperstown Rotary Club, he was honored in October of 1997 for 50 years of active membership. An avid golfer, Harold was a member of the Leatherstocking Golf Club and was a former member of the Cooperstown Volunteer Fire Department.
Harold is survived by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Peter and Raymond Hollis.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Douglas C. Smith, rector of Christ Church, officiating and the Rev. Canon George F. French, rector emeritus of Christ Church, assisting. The committal service and burial, with full military honors accorded by the Cooperstown Veterans Club, will follow in Lakewood Cemetery, Cooperstown.
There will be no calling hours.

Wanda Stewart
HARTWICK — Mrs. Wanda Stewart, 61, of Gulf Road, Hartwick, died Friday evening, July 30, 1999, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
Funeral arrangements are pending under the direction of the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home.
Wallace M. Wynkoop
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Wallace Marvin Wynkoop, 81, died July 30, 1999, in Virginia Beach, Va.
He was born Aug. 13, 1917, the only child of Vivian Clark and Marvin D. Wynkoop.
A Downsville native, he lived 80 years in the community before retiring to Virginia. Mr. Wynkoop was salutatorian of the Downsville Class of 1933 and a 1939 graduate of Union University College of Pharmacy. He was owner and operator of Wynkoop's Pharmacy in Downsville from 1948-1972.
"Wally" Wynkoop began a lifetime of public service in 1936 as a bill clerk and page in the New York State Assembly Document Room. He returned to Downsville serving as justice of the peace from 1940-1942. During World War II, as a Navy pharmacist's mate, Wynkoop was stationed in Key West, Fla., and Guam.
He was a Downsville School board member 1950-1952, secretary/treasurer of the Downsville Fire District 1953-1972 and a 35-year member of the department.
First elected supervisor of the town of Colchester in 1958, Wally served as chairman of the Delaware County finance committee (1960-1972) and as the county's first budget director from 1968-1972. During his 14 year tenure, the Colchester Police Department was established and all Colchester cemeteries were assured of perpetual care.
Wynkoop was a New York State Republican Committeeman from 1979-1997. In 1970, Gov. Nelson Rockefeller appointed Wynkoop to the New York State Off-Track Betting Commission where he served as executive director from 1972-1973. Between 1973 and 1976 he acted as assistant director and director of the New York State Racing and Wagering Board, Division of Off-Track Betting and Executive Director of the New York State Association of Off-Track Betting Corporations. He was a consultant and registered lobbyist from 1977-1996.
Survivors include his devoted wife of 58 years, Mildred Mosher Wynkoop; daughter, Marilyn W. Banes; son-in-law, Dr. Robert T. Banes and grandson, Robert T. Banes Jr of Virgina Beach, Va.
A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, 1999, at Colchester Community Church by the Rev. Maybelle Renzi and the Rev. John G. Wall. Interment in Paige Cemetery.
The family will receive friends for remembrance and visitation from 7-9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 2, 1999, at Knorr Funeral Home, Downsville.

Francis M. Mule
UNADILLA — Mr. Francis M. Mule, 82, of Unadilla, died Friday, July 30, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.
He was born Oct. 1, 1916, in New York City, the son of Beni and Leonarda (Corrao) Mule.
Francis was a Merchant Marine. He worked at Hoke Inc. in Cresskill, N.J., as a maintenance engineer.
He is survived by two sons, Rene Mule of Unadilla and Andre Mule of New Jersey; two grandsons, Michael and Anthony Mule of Unadilla; and his former wife, Anne Mule of New Jersey.
Francis was predeceased by a brother Samuel Mule.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 3, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. The Rev. Fred Albrecht, pastor of the Otego United Methodist Church, will officiate.
The family will be present at the funeral home on Monday, Aug. 2, from 5-8 p.m. for those that wish to call. Following the services, Francis will be cremated at the Hillington Crematory, Morris.
