Rodman R. Tatnall
COOPERSTOWN — Rodman R. Tatnall, 92, most recently of Cooperstown and formerly of Laurens, died Saturday, May 29, 1999, at the Bassett Healthcare Center in Cooperstown.
Rod was raised in Wayland, Mass. He attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and worked for Colorado Fuel & Iron, Wickwire Spencer Division, for 40 years in Worcester and Palmer, Mass., Buffalo, and Trenton, N.J. He retired in 1968.
Throughout his career, he was active in the Wire Association, American Society for Testing and Materials, and the American Society for Metals.
He and his wife retired to Westmoreland, N.H., where Rod became a gentleman farmer, and an involved citizen, serving as census taker, town clerk, town treasurer, school treasurer and town selectman. In 1984, he moved to Solon, Ohio, and in 1990, to Laurens, to live near his son and daughter.
Throughout his life, Rod was active in professional organizations, as well as the Masons, Lions Club, Worcester Community Chest, American Red Cross, the YMCA and the North Worcester Aid Society. He loved gardening, woodworking, chess, games, photography, various dogs, puzzles, reading and the challenge of investing.
Rod was predeceased by his wife, Amy (Taylor) Tatnall in 1977; a sister Catherine Dik; and a brother, George Tatnall.
Rod is survived by two sons, one daughter and their spouses, R. Francis and Donna Tatnall of Newberry, Ohio, Peter and Marylou Tatnall of Marietta, Ga., and Sara and Charles Endress of Laurens; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
As there will be no public memorial service, friends and relatives who have been touched by Rod's life, or who wish to respect his memory, may reserve a day to be more loving to their mates, more gentle with their children, friendlier to their neighbors, and reconcile one spite or grievance.

Beverly J. Carpenter
ONEONTA — Beverly J. Carpenter, 54, passed away Tuesday, June 1, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
She was born June 2, 1944, in Albany, the daughter of Norris and Betty (Almy) Hobbie.
She was a lifelong resident of the Tri-Towns area, attending schools in Sidney and Unadilla.
She was employed at A.O. Fox Memorial Hosptial for many years leaving due to illness.
She was a member of the Moose Lodge in Sidney and the West End Community Baptist Church.
Bev was a great mom and grandma, enjoying crocheting and being with her family.
Beverly is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Tammy and Mike Butts and Michelle and Joe Yager of Otego; a son, Jeff Harrington of Philadelphia; her parents, Norris and Betty Hobbie of Unadilla; three grandchildren, Travis and Eric Butts and Marisa Yager; a sister and brother-in-law, Bernie and Lew Talbot; a niece, Nicki of Mesquite, Texas; a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Gary Lord; nephews, Terry, Shayne and Buddy of Unadilla; a brother and sister-in-law, Ben and Jackie Hobbie; and nieces, Jenn and Holly of Unadilla; an aunt, Marge Almy; many cousins; and two lifelong friends, Ladine Brown and Larry Bowman of Otego.
She was predeceased by a son, Randy Marshall.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, June 4, 1999, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Keith Van Dewerker, pastor of the West End Community Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at the Sand Hill Cemetery in Wells Bridge.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home at noon Friday till service time.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Otego Emergency Squad.

Harriet Haffner
KINGSTON — Mrs. Harriet Townsend Haffner, 87, of Kingston and formerly of Oneonta, died Saturday, May 29, 1999, at Ten Broeck Commons, Lake Katrine.
She was born April 8, 1912, in Oneonta, the daughter of Fred and Anna (Lynch) Townsend.
Harriet married Howard J. Haffner on Jan. 9, 1939. He died June 3, 1979.
A homemaker in her own home, Harriet was a resident of Kingston for more than 40 years.
She was a fomrer member of the First Baptist Church of Oneonta. As a pastime she had enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting, especially deer hunting with her husband and moose hunting in Canada.
Harriet was a very caring person and helped her sisters in their later years.
Harriet is survived by three sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Townsend of Oneonta, Ruth Busackee of Little Falls and Marion Schatzky of Largo, Fla.; two nephews and nieces, Craig and Patricia Townsend of Oneonta and Lester Murdock Jr. and Carol of Greenville, S.C.; a good friend, Alide Thomson of Lake Katrine; and several grandnieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Albert, Fred and Robert Andrew Townsend; two sisters, Edith Mulkins and Frances Murdock; and a dear niece, Nancy Townsend Reynolds.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 5, 1999, from the West Davenport Freewill Baptist Church, West Davenport, with the Rev. John Osterhout officiating. Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, on Friday, June 4, 1999, during the day until 5 p.m. The family will not be present at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Lila Parker Tilley
ITHACA — Lila Parker Tilley, 91, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 31, 1999, at Oak Hill Manor.
She was the daughter of Warren Parker and Elva Pashley Parker of Edmeston.
After marrying Glenn Tilley she moved to Mount Vision, where she resided for the next 66 years.
Other than her parents, Lila was predeceased by brothers, George and Warren; and a sister, Grace Nichols.
Mrs. Tilley is survived by children, Phila Elva Eves of Rochester, Mary Elizabeth Tilley of Lansing and Dr. George Parker (Carol) Tilley of Syracuse; sisters, Mabel (Curtis) Ackerman of West Burlington and Ada Parker of Edmeston; granddaughters, Pamela (Scott) Crist of Rochester, Susan Eves of Phoenix, Ariz., Jennifer (Brian) Farlow of Dallas, Texas, and Cynthia (John) Cavo of Tampa, Fla.; and one great-granddaughter, Francesca Farlow of Dallas, Texas. Also surviving are sister-in-law, Lillian Tilley Hickling of Garrattsville; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Saturday, June 5, 1999, at 1 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Mount Vision with the Rev. Stephen Bicknell officiating. Commital will follow in the Mount Vision Cemetery.

Frank Krumal
SCHENECTADY — Former businessman Mr. Frank Krumal, 87, of Bradford Street, Schenectady, and formerly of Lamplighter Acres, died Wednesday, May 26, 1999, at Ellis Hospital, Schenectady.
He was born in South Dakota. Mr. Krumal attended Saratoga High School and lived in the Schenectady area most of his life.
For several years, he was a welder for the General Electric Co. Later, he became a master plumber and was proprietor of Frank Krumal & Son Plumbing & Heating.
Mr. Krumal was a life member of the UA Plumbers Union and a member of the American Sokol, the Scotia-Glenville Kiwanis Club, the Kaydeross Rod & Gun Club and the Moreau Community and Senior Citizens Center. He also was a founding member of the 5&5 Rod & Gun Club in North Creek.
His wife, Josephine Krumal, died in 1984.
Mr. Krumal is survived by a son, Frank K. Krumal of Schenectady; two daughters, J. Barbara Bodie of Otego and Helen J. Krumal of Schenectady; a brother, James Krumal of California; and two sisters, Mary Eddy of Saratoga and Bessie Jandak of Chicago.

Ralph Chamberlain
FLY CREEK — Ralph E. Chamberlain, 72, died Wednesday afternoon, June 2, 1999, at his home in Fly Creek.
He was born on June 15, 1926, in the Bronx, the son of William E. and Mary Alice (Craswell) Chamberlain.
He married Ellen Harrington Smith on Oct. 5, 1996, at their home in Fly Creek.
Mr. Chamberlain spent his early years in the metropolitan New York area before moving to Cincinnati, Ohio, and later to Syracuse, where he graduated from Valley High School in 1943. That same year he enlisted in the United States Navy and was assigned to submarine service in the Pacific until 1946. He then attended Hobart College in Geneva, Syracuse University and the Salvation Army School for Officer Training in Suffern. Attaining the rank of captain in the Salvation Army, he served for many years as the director of development and director of the National Information Service.
Mr. Chamberlain was the founder and chairman of the board of Precise Kit Promotions, Inc. with offices in Ramsey, N.J., and Utica. This corporation is a manufacturer of disaster aid kits for private and government agencies. He also founded and operated several other businesses including Holland Estill Co., Inc. of Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J., consultants in public relations and fund-raising for not-for-profit institutions; BBH Stables in Fly Creek; Sportsman's Limo Ltd. in Fly Creek; and Sportsman's Tavern, a popular Fly Creek restaurant now known as the Chamberlain Center, home of the New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health of Bassett Healthcare.
He was a charter member and past national president of the National Society of Fund Raising Executives, board member of the New York Chapter and treasurer of its national foundation. This organization annually holds a New York luncheon named in his honor, and in April of this year named him as honorary chair of the 36th International Conference on Fund-Raising.
Deeply committed to the needs and interests of his community, Mr. Chamberlain dedicated much of his life to education, health and arts programs.
At Hartwick College in Oneonta, he served as a member of their Citizens Board and for nine years as a member of the college's board of trustees. As such, he chaired both the trustees and honorary degrees and the institution advancement committees, served on the Campaign XXI Planning Committee and the Bicentennial Campaign for Leadership Committee. He was also the sponsor of Hartwick Night at Glimmerglass Opera. In recognition of his years of dedicated service, Hartwick College awarded him the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters on Sept. 4, 1998.
Mr. Chamberlain had a long affiliation with Bassett Healthcare of Cooperstown and served as president of the Friends of Bassett board of directors and as a member of the board of trustees. He chaired Bassett Healthcare's campaign to build a new primary-care clinic and was instumental in raising $8 million for that purpose. Recently he participated in the campaign to establish a new critical-care unit at Bassett Hospital.
Strongly devoted to Glimmerglass Opera in Cooperstown, he joined the board of trustees in 1988 and served on the Executive, Finance and Nominating Committees. In 1994, he was elected president of the board of trustees and continued to serve as chairman until the time of his death.
Mr. Chamberlain has also served as a member of the board of directors of the Farmers' Museum in Cooperstown; the Bergen County (N.J.) 200 Club; and the Do-er's Club of Bloomingdale, N.J.
A lifelong Republican, he was a member of the Presidential Roundtable as well as a supporter of the Otsego County Republican Committee.
A collector of classic automobiles, he was often seen on the streets of Cooperstown in his vintage Rolls Royce.
Music was always an important part of Mr. Chamberlain's life. He enjoyed singing and also played the trombone for a time with a professional orchestra in Syracuse. He was a supporter of the New York Staff Band of the Salvation Army and was a patron of the Metropolitan Opera.
Mr. Chamberlain is survived by his wife, Ellen; his three daughters, Sharon Wagner of Pompton Lakes, N.J., Elizabeth Richards of Seabrook Island, S.C., and Samantha Chamberlain of Fly Creek; his two sons, Ralph E. Chamberlain Jr. of Westwood, N.J., and Richard Chamberlain of Fly Creek; his stepdaughter, Elisabeth Smith of Northhampton, Mass.; his stepson, Peter Smith of Burlington Flats; his mother-in-law, Agnes (Peg) Harrington of Cooperstown; 11 grandchildren; his two brothers, Robert Chamberlain of Depew and the Rev. Charles Chamberlain of Thomasville, N.C., and Castleton, Vt.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by one son, William E. Chamberlain III; and two brothers, William E. and Harold C. Chamberlain.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, June 6, 1999, at Christ Church, Fair and River Streets in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Douglas C. Smith, rector, officiating. Burial will follow in Lakewood Cemetery, East Lake Road, Cooperstown.
Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, 82 Chestnut St., Cooperstown, Saturday evening, June 5, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. when Mr. Chamberlain's family will be in attendance.

Herbert Sweet
SOUTH PLYMOUTH — Herbert M. Sweet, 87, formerly of South Plymouth, passed away on Thursday, June 3, 1999, at the New York State Veteran's Home in Oxford.
He was born in Milford, on July 24, 1911. He was the son of Amos and Eva Williams Sweet.
He served during World War II with the United States Army in the 88th Quartermaster Corps. He fought in the battles of the North Apennines, the Po Valley and Romer-Arno while serving in the European Theatre of operations.
Herb was a fireman in the Oneonta Fire Department for 21 years. In 1954, he and his wife, Julia opened the Coffee Pot Restaurant in Oneonta. In 1959, they moved to Norwich, where he joined Osborne Electric. He later was an electrician with Collier Electric and Dorco Electric. While he was with Dorco he worked on the electrical systems at the IBM facility in Endicott and also at Link Field in Binghamton. He retired in 1971.
He was a member of the VFW and American Legion in Norwich and a life member of the Norwich Elks Lodge.
In 1950, in Maryland he married Julia Osborne, who survives. He is also survived by two sisters, Virginia Hicks of Milford and Evelyn Shaw of Florida; several nieces and nephews also survive.
He was predeceased by a brother, James Sweet.
There will be no funeral services at this time. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the NYS Veteran's Home. Interment will take place in Plains Cemetery in Oneonta.
Contributions in his memory may be made to Maple Cottage at the New York State Veteran's Home, Oxford, N.Y. 13830.

Lila Parker Tilley
ITHACA — Lila Parker Tilley, 91, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 31, 1999, at Oak Hill Manor.

Eileen T. Burns
OTEGO — Eileen T. Burns, 72, of Otego, died Wednesday, June 2, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.
She was born on Feb. 16, 1927, in the Bronx, the daughter of Redmond and Mary (Guilfoyle) Barrett.
Eileen worked as a nurse's aide in the Countryside Care Center in Delhi for a period of 17 years. She retired in 1993.
Eileen is survived by her children, Stephen Burns of Dobbs Ferry, Richard Burns of Unadilla and Susan M. Cartelli of Otego; four grandchildren, Nicholas and Mackenzie Carteli and Steven and Stacy Burns; a sister, Marian Cortelli of Yonkers; along with several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 5, 1999, at noon in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor of St. Mary's Church, officiating.
Friends are invited to call on Saturday, from 11 a.m. until service time.

Florence E. Ludwig
UNADILLA — Florence E. Ludwig, 75, of 39 Fellows St., Unadilla, died Thursday, June 3, 1999, at The Hospital, Sidney.
She was born Dec. 22, 1923, in Hamden, the daughter of Emerson and Phebe (Tompkins) Smith.
She was married to James F. Ludwig on Aug. 5, 1944 in Houston, Texas.
She has been a resident of Unadilla since 1942 and was a retired elementary school teacher in the Sidney Central School system.
She is a member of the New York State United Teachers, an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Unadilla, a former elder and presently financial secretary of her church, which she had served for many years. She was a former member of the Rebekah Lodge of Unadilla, a former member of the OES Chapter 179 of Unadilla and the Joyce-Bell Post 578 American Legion Auxiliary of Unadilla.
Mrs. Ludwig is survived by her husband, James F. Ludwig of Unadilla; a son, Robert J. Ludwig of Unadilla; a daughter, Kathryn A. David of Greene; five grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Carol Y. Della Peruti, in 1979; and two sisters, Bertha Laughman and Yvonne Merwin.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 7, 1999, at the First Presbyterian Church, Unadilla, with the Rev. Helen Havlik, pastor, officiating.
Interment will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.
Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home, 112 Main St., Unadilla, Sunday, June 6, 1999, from 7-8:30 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Eugene C. Barthel
UNADILLA — Eugene C. Barthel, 62, of County Highway 2, Unadilla, died unexpectedly Thursday, June 3, 1999, at The Hospital, Sidney.
He was born July 29, 1936, in Englewood, N.J., the son of Frank and Anna (Thoma) Barthel.
He was married to May R. Daul on Aug. 16, 1958, in Cresskill, N.J. He and his wife, May, have had 40 wonderful years of marrige.
He was a painting contractor for many years in Seminole, Fla., and Bergen County, N.J. In 1993 he came to Unadilla to try his hand at farming. He presently was employed by Briarwood Co. Ltd. of Otego.
Mr. Barthel is survived by his wife, May R. Barthel of Unadilla; two sons, Tom Barthel of Orlando, Fla., and Michael Barthel of Seminole, Fla.; two daughters, Jackie Heuer of New Port Ritchey, Fla., and Carolynn Wendt of Tampa, Fla.; a sister, RoseAnne Truppi of Emerson, N.J.; and nine grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Frank Barthel.
A funeral service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Monday, June 7, 1999, at the Westcott Funeral Home, 112 Main St., Unadilla, with the Rev. R. Michael Amos, pastor of the Fellowship Baptist Church, Unadilla, officiating.
Friends may call at the funeral home, Monday, June 7, from 4-6 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

HARTWICK — Committal services and inurnments for Steffie Pullis Baker, M.D., 86, of Hartwick, who died Feb. 2, 1999, and Francis Edward Pullis, 98, of Hartwick, who died April 15, 1999, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 8, 1999, at the Columbarium Wall in Christ Church Cemetery with the Rev. Douglas C. Smith, rector of Christ Church in Cooperstown, officiating.
Another committal service for Mr. Pullis will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 8, 1999, in Milford Cemetery with the Rev. Nancy Kozlowski, pastor of Milford United Methodist Church, officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
Jerome H. Ludder
CHERRY VALLEY — Jerome H. Ludder of Cherry Valley died early Thursday, June 3. Funeral services will be held Monday, June 7, at Grace Episcopal Church, Cherry Valley, at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Cherry Valley Cemetery.
Mr. Ludder served with the Eighth Air Force heavy bomber group in England during World War II with the rank of captain. His corporate career included 15 years with Life Magazine (Time Inc.) as well as with the Council on Foreign Relations and RPI.
He has lived in Cherry Valley for the past six years. He is survived by his wife, Eileen T. Ludder; a daughter, Patricia Ludder Jackson of Berkeley, Calif.; as well as children from a previous marriage.
