Richard E. Rowley
RINGGOLD, Ga. — Richard E. Rowley, 70, of Ringgold, Ga., passed away Tuesday, May 18, 1999, at his residence.
A resident of the North Georgia area for the past 17 years, he was a former resident of Cooperstown.
He was retired from the state of New York where he worked for 18 years for the Historical Preservation Society where he worked as a master craftsman.
He also worked for Douglas Clinton Restorations for two years.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a member of the Westside Church of Christ in Rossville, Ga.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Ethel Rowley; a sister, Jean Griffith; and a brother, Harold "Sonny" Rowley.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Rowley of Ringgold, Ga.; daughter, Beth Ann Smith of Tupelo, Miss.; son, Brad Rowley of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; two stepsons, Jeff Perry of Rossville, Ga., and Phil Perry of Chattanooga, Tenn.; a sister, Helen Maine of Houston, Texas; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel.
Interment will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery.
The family will receive friends after 2 p.m. Thursday and until funeral time Friday at the funeral home.

Stephen A. Ross
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Stephen A. Ross, 64, of Hoke Road, died on Wednesday, May 19, 1999, at his home.
He was born July 18, 1934, in Brooklyn, a son of the late Benjamin and Sadie Fox Rosenblum.
Stephen was educated in Brooklyn and Baltimore, Md., schools. He had taught at Mohawk Valley Community College and was a guest lecturer at Utica College to the health-care management students.
A U.S. Navy veteran, he served our country during the Korean conflict and was honorably discharged in 1956. He was a member of the Phillapp Kappa Society and the American Nursing Association. He was a licensed antique collector and at one time bred black Great Danes.
Surviving are one brother, Albert Rosenblum of Westbury, L.I., and two nephews.
Funeral service will be on Friday at 2 p.m. in Springfield Center Cemetery with the Pastor Alan Miller officiating at the Ross Mausoleum. Entombment will follow.
Memorial donations may be made to the Herkimer County Hospice Memorial Program, 307 North Washington St., Suite 2343, Herkimer, N.Y. 13350.

Virginia Marsland
FAYETTEVILLE — Virginia Keough Marsland, 90, of the Nottingham, died Tuesday, May 18, at home.
Born in White Plains, she was the daughter of Peter J. and Bertha Humphries Keller Keough.
She was a graduate of White Plains High School and Kathryn Gibbs School in Manhattan.
Mrs. Marsland was an avid gardener and a member of the Federated Garden Club of New York. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Chappaqua.
She married Paul S. Marsland in Puerto Rico in 1934, where he was an employee of Chase Bank. In later years, he became an officer of the bank and they traveled extensively.
She is survived by a son, Philip H. Marsland of Henniker, N.H.; three grandsons, Paul Marsland of Henniker, N.H., Shawn Marsland of Roanoke, Va., and Gary Marsland with the USAF based in Germany; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla. There will be no calling hours.

Marion M. Erichson
COLD SPRING — Marion M. Erichson, 83, of Cold Spring, died Monday, May 17, 1999, at Rose Taylor Center, Hawthorne.
Born in Syracuse on May 8, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Marie Burnell Emore.
Mrs. Erichson was a former secretary at the Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Ontario working on the Manhattan Project.
An area resident moving from the Cooperstown area recently, she is survived by her husband, William M. Erichson; three children, Mary Ann Travis of Roseboom, James Erichson of Cold Spring and Thomas Erichson of Walden; as well as eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one son, Edward Erichson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 21, 1999, at Our Lady of Loretto Church at 10 a.m. under the direction of the Clinton Funeral Home.
Friends may call at the Clinton Funeral Home, corner of Parrott and Pine Streets, Cold Spring, on Thursday from 2-4 amd 7-9 p.m.
Rebecca Paternoster
WALTON — A graveside committal service for Rebecca Retz Paternoster, who died Jan. 19, 1999, will be held on Saturday, May 22, at 1 p.m. in the Walton Cemetery. The Rev. Paul Cronin will officiate.
Friends are invited to the family home on Gardiner Place immediately following the burial to celebrate the life of Rebecca Paternoster.
W. Donald Llewelyn
COOPERSTOWN — A committal service for W. Donald Llewelyn, who died Dec. 29, 1998, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 22, 1999, in St. Mary's Cemetery in Index with Fr. John R. Roos, pastor of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
Minnie Alma Beecher
WALTON — Minnie Alma Beecher, 98, of 139 North St., died Wednesday, May 19, 1999, at Delaware Valley Hospital, Walton.
She was born on Oct. 3, 1900, at Goulds, a daughter of Clarence and Minnie (Milk) Hoolihan.
On June 9, 1921, she married Frederick R. Beecher in Goulds.
She lived several years in Goulds and Rock Valley near Hancock. She and her husband moved to Walton in 1937.
She was employed in real estate and worked alongside her husband on several dairy farms that they owned. Alma enjoyed making hundreds of quilts and afghans and reading. She took immense pleasure in seeing all of her grandchildren, enjoying every minute of it. She also enjoyed gardening, canning and camping.
She is survived by her husband of 77 years, Frederick; five daughters, Viola and son-in-law, Charles Fiumera, of Walton, Wenona and son-in-law, Donald Hovey, of Cooperstown, Virginia Beecher of Utica, Althea and son-in-law, Lawrence Gennarino, of Oneonta and Carol and son-in-law, Charles Brown, of Moorestown, N.J.; 19 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by twin sons, Milton and Hilton Beecher.
Funeral services will be on Saturday, May 22, 1999, at 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 101 North St., Walton, with the Rev. L. Lawrence Dunlap, pastor of her church, officiating.
Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Friday, May 21, at Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, corner of North and Delaware Streets.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 101 North St., Walton, in her memory.
Arnold Spence
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Arnold Edward Spence born Nov. 16, 1924, in Detroit, Mich. died April 21, 1999, in Scottsdale, Ariz.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Mary Lou, mother of Cynthia Campbell, Dwight Spence and Susan Cons of Phoenix and Scott Spence of Minneapolis, Minn. He is also survived by his brother, Raymond Spence of Brevard, S.C., and seven grandchildren.
Arnie, a resident of Arizona for 25 years was a professional baseball player with the Boston Red Sox, served in the U.S. Army as an anti-aircraft gunner and then became CEO of Susquehanna Valley Mills in Otego.
After retiring from baseball, Arnie became an avid golfer with memberships at Cooperstown Country Club in New York and Oro Valley Country Club in Tucson where he won several club championships.

Carolyn M. Mauel
APPLETON, Wis. — Carolyn M. (Speranzi) Mauel of Appleton, Wis., died Thursday, May 13, 1999, at her home.

She was born in Oneonta on July 29, 1919, to the late Julius and Mary (Molinari) Speranzi.
Carolyn was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church. She volunteered at Appleton Medical Center and St. Joseph's Food Program. Her favorite pastime was knitting.
She is survived by her children, Kathy Green of River Falls, Christine (Tim) Brunette of Appleton, Jolene (Gregg) Popp of Neenah and Paul (Lorrie) Mauel of Branson, Mo; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Anthony Speranzi of Spokane, Wash., and Thomas (Grace) Speranzi of Oneonta; a sister Ann Briguglio of Oneonta; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; brothers, Joseph and Andrew; and a granddaughter, Carey.
A funeral service was held Monday, May 17, at Calvary Chapel.
James Stewart Ford Thomson
COOPERSTOWN — James Stewart Ford Thomson, MD, 60, of Haggerty Road, Cooperstown, died unexpectedly early Friday morning, May 21, 1999 at home.
He was born Dec. 9, 1938 in Patna, India, a son of James Stewart Ford Thomson, MD and Virginia Castleton Thomson.
He married Donna M. Henderson on April 18, 1974 in Oswego.
Dr. Thomson's early childhood was spent in India, until he and his parents moved to Scotland in 1949.
In July of 1963 he received his M.B., ChB from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.
From 1964 until 1965, he was a Research Fellow at Harvard University in Massachusetts. He then returned to Scotland in 1968 and was affiliated with the Crichton Royal Hospital in Dumfries.
From 1970 until 1972 he was affiliated with the Marcy State Hospital in Marcy, where he was the physician in charge of the Adolescent Unit. From 1972-1987, Dr. Thomson served in various supervisory capacities at several medical facilities, including Oswego County Mental Health, Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pa. and was Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at the Hershey Medical School in Hershey, Pa.
Dr. Thomson moved to the Cooperstown area in August 1987 when he became affiliated with the Mary Imogene Bassett Hosptial where he was an attending physician in psychiatry as well as Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry with Columbia University.
In 1993, he became the clinical director of the Capitol District Psychiatric Center in Albany and was Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Albany Medical College. In October of 1994 he became the Staff Psychiatrist at the Binghamton Psychiatric Center and was part of the shared staff of the Otsego County Mental Health Clinic in Oneonta. He was also currently serving as a consulting psychiatrist for Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown and the Upstate Home for Children in Milford Center, as well as maintaining his own private practice in Cooperstown.
In his death, there will be many people who will feel a sense of personal loss. He never played a leading part in local affairs, but there was something about him; a zest for living, a calmness, a breath of old world charm, courtesy and humor; which served as a tonic and sent you more happily on your way.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Donna; two daughters and one son-in-law, Ellen and Christopher Conover of Woods of Winona, N.J. and Anne Thomson of Connecticut; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Brian Stewart Thomson of Cooperstown and Mr. and Mrs. James Thomson of Utica; one granddaughter, Alexandria and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, May 24, 1999 at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown with Rev. John R. Roose, pastor, officiating.
Friends may call at the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown from 2-3:30 p.m. Monday, May 24, 1999 when Dr. Thomson's family will be in attendance.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, Heart Gifts Processing Center, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, N.Y. 13220-3049.

Francis Haynes
RHINEBECK — Francis Haynes, 70, formerly of Oneonta and Fleischmanns, died Thursday, May 20, 1999, at the Ferncliff Nursing Home.
He was born in Arkville on May 23, 1928, the son of the late Ivan and Katie Dwyer Haynes.
Mr. Haynes was a native and lifelong area resident of the Catskills. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and all the fun that accompanies their numerous family camping expeditions.
He was an instructor of the New York State Hunter Safety Training course. He had been the supervising engineer for Public Storage for many years. His work took him throughout the eastern seaboard. He worked at A.H. Todd Auto Dealership in Fleischmanns, also for the motor vehicle repair and maintenance division of Belleayre Ski Center in Highmount.
He and a partner purchased Sam Craft Motors, renaming it F&M Motors of Margaretville, offering Chrysler/Plymouth/Dodge cars.
Mr. Haynes was also a stock car owner and racer having appeared at many local tracks. His stock car No. was 69. He was a volunteer of the Fleischmanns Fire Department for many years and was also active with the Boy Scouts in Fleischmanns.
He devoted much time to the Delaware County Historical Association for Retarded Citizens, having served as past president and being a major influence in having the school built in Hamden.
He was honorable discharged from the United States Air Force in 1949, having attained the rank of sergeant.
Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Ruth Howard Haynes; a daughter, Frances Correia of West Hurley; a son, Thomas Haynes of New Paltz; a sister, Doris Wetmore of Oneonta; two brothers, Leonard of Schenevus and Milton of Fleischmanns; five granddaughters, Crysti Buyce, Katie Correia and Rebbecca, Katherine and Veronica Haynes; stepchildren, Wayne Caswell, William Baer, Merideth Schneider, Lee Bollinger, Wayne Baer and Roger Zeigler.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Isabel, in 1968, and siblings Richard, Frederick and Margaret McCann.
A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Haynes will be held on Sunday at 3 p.m. at the E.H. Gormley Funeral Home, Main Street, Phoenicia, with the Rev. Lyle Linder, of Franklin, officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the West Hurley or Modena rescue squads.
Burial will be in the Bedell Cemetery, Redkill.
Friends will be received Saturday from 2-4 and Sunday from 1-3 p.m. at the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home.
