Melvin Adair Sr.
WORCESTER — Melvin Adair Sr., 63, of Worcester, died suddenly, Monday, May 10, 1999, in the town of Westford, due to injuries sustained in an accident.

He was born Jan. 2, 1936, in Decatur, the son of James and Gladys (Fancher) Adair.

He married Lola VanPatten on March 19, 1994 in Worcester.

Melvin was a lifelong area resident. He was at one time employed for the town of Worcester, Middlefield, and for many years the town of Decatur. Currently he was a highway employee for the town of Westford.

Melvin was a member of the Eastern Draft Horse Association. He enjoyed going to horse auctions and rodeos. He loved his grandchildren dearly.

Melvin is survived by his wife, Lola Adair of Worcester; his children, James Adair of Cobleskill, Patti and her husband, Nick Beers of San Marcos,  Texas and Melvin Jr. and his wife, Diane Adair, of Worcester; stepchildren, Janet and her husband, Benjamin Simonds of East Worcester, Cynthia and her husband, David Decker of Decatur and Brenda and her husband, Corey McMillen, of Richmondville; 14 grandchildren; a brother, Clifford Adair of Central Bridge; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, first wife, Anita, and two brothers, Lester and Kenneth Adair.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, May 13, 1999, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, officiating. Burial will follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, May 12, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made in loving memory of Melvin to the Westford First Responders, P.O. Box 187, Westford, N.Y. 13488 or the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, Main Street, Schenevus, N.Y. 12155.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

John L. Burnett
CONCORD, N.C. — John L. (Jack) Burnett, 69, of Concord, N.C., formerly of Cooperstown, died on Friday, May 7, 1999, in Concord, N.C.

He was born on Aug. 8, 1929, in Cooperstown, a son of William Carter and Elnora (Horan) Burnett.

He married Carol  Jones on Jan. 9, 1954, in Cooperstown.

Jack graduated from Cooperstown High School in the Class of 1947. He attended Clarkson University and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. In the mid-1950s he began a 35-year career with IBM, living in Scotia, N.Y., Endwell, N.Y. and Concord, N.C.

He was a member of St. James Catholic Church and the American Legion Post 51, both of Concord, N.C.

Jack is survived by his wife of 35 years, Carol; a daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Timothy Kilmer of Asheville, N.C.; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Paul and Jean Burnett of  Johnson City, N.Y., Peter and Jan Burnett of Endicott, N.Y., Timothy Burnett of Concord, N.C., and Thomas Burnett of Tupelo, Miss.; seven grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, William and Delores Burnett of Cooperstown, N.Y.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jack was predeceased by an infant son, Phillip.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, May 11, 1999, at the Wilkinson Funeral Chapel in Concord, N.C.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 29, 1999, at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with the Rev. John R. Roos, pastor, officiating. Burial with full military honors accorded by the Cooperstown Veterans Club will follow in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to Meals On Wheels, 212-103 Lephillip Court, NE, Concord, N.C. 28025 or Hospice of Cabarrus County, P.O. Box 1235, Concord, N.C. 28025.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Margaret (Peg) Graig
DAVENPORT — Margaret (Peg) Graig, 82, of Davenport passed away Tuesday, May 11, 1999, at her home.

Arrangements are pending at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport.

Gemmel Goss
MERIDALE — Services for Marian Eleanor Gemmel Goss who passed away March 18, 1999, will take place Saturday, May 15, 1999, at 10 a.m. at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Arline B. Crocker
DELHI — Memorial services for Arline B. Crocker, who passed away Feb. 21, 1999, will take place Friday, May 14, 1999, at United Ministry of Delhi Church at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Mark H. Chatterton officiating. Burial will be at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Theodore Frederick Klumpe Sr.
UNADILLA — Theodore F. Klumpe Sr., 66, of 754 State Highway 7, Lot No.7, Unadilla, died on Sunday, May 9, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born on March 4, 1933, on Staten Island.

Theodore is survived by a son, Frederick W. of Chesterfield, Va.; grandson, Theodore F. Klumpe III of Pine Bush; granddaughter, Rachel Marie of Chesterfield, Va.; a brother, Herbert W. Klumpe Jr. of Meredith; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Theodore F. Jr., and a brother, Robert J.

He was a retired New York state trooper, with over 20 years of service in Troops C and E. He served over 15 years in the Elmira, Horseheads sub-station. He was a retired captain for Pinkerton Security, the Binghamton area, for over seven years.

There are no funeral or memorial services.

His body was donated to Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse.

Arrangements by The Southern Tier Memorial Society Inc., Binghamton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice Inc.

Robert James Layton
PHILADELPHIA — Robert James Layton, 50, of Philadelphia, and formerly of Sidney, N.Y., died Friday, May 7, 1999, in Philadelphia.

He was born July 15, 1948, in Long Branch, N.J., the son of George and Edith (Daly) Layton.

He was married to Barbara Gormery. She died five years ago.

He was a carpenter in the Philadelphia area for the past few years.

Robert is survived by his mother, Edith Layton of Morris, N.Y.; two brothers, George Layton and his wife, Geri of Morris, N.Y. and John Layton of Morris, N.Y.; one aunt, Pearl Layton of Morris, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church in Morris, N.Y., on Saturday, May 15, 1999, at 9:30 a.m., with the Rev. Morris Dwyer officiating. Calling hours will be on Friday, May 14, 1999, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, N.Y.

Russell F. Varnum
MINEOLA — Russell F. Varnum, lifetime resident of Mineola, Long Island, also with a residence in Andes, passed away on March 8, 1999.

He was a graduate of the State University College of Technology at Farmingdale, with a degree in agriculture. He was in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the American Legion. He had 42 years of service with Nassau County Sheriff's Department, in charge of the jail's farm. He was an active member of South Shore Symphony of Rockville Centre, and The Long Island Senior Pops Orchesta. He also played for Nassau Pops Orchestra. He was an officer for Mineola High School Alumni Association.

He was the beloved husband of the late Kathryn. He was a devoted father of Barbara Bouton of Arkville, Judith Turner of Hamden, and the late Kathleen Turner. He was a loving grandfather of Robert Storey, Wendy Buerge, Jason Poppe and great-grandfather of Cassandra Storey. He was the dear brother of Harvey, and cherished uncle of Roland and Russell Varnum and Valerie Walker.

Committal services will be held Friday, May 14, 1999, at 11 a.m. at the Margaretville Cemetery, with the Rev. Bert More officiating.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Effie E. Ruparshek
YOUNGSTOWN — Committal services and burial for Effie E. Ruparshek, 81, of Youngstown and formerly of Christian Hill, who died Feb. 22, 1999, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 15, 1999, at St. Mary's Cemetery in Index, with the Rev. John R. Roos, pastor of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Charles L. Youmans
GILBOA — Charles L. Youmans, 82, of Flat Creek Road, died Tuesday, May 11, 1999, at the Bassett Hospital in Cobleskill, following a long illness.

Mr. Youmans was born April 6, 1917, on Fultonham, the son of Charles and Helen (Gridley) Youmans.

Mr. Youmans was employed as a security guard for the New York State Power Authority in Gilboa for several years before retiring.

In his early years, Mr. Youmans was manager of the former WGY Grocery Store in Middleburgh and then the Oneida Market for many years.

Mr. Youmans then joined the United States Army serving from 1942 to 1946. He was discharged as a technician, 5th Class. After the war, Mr. Youmans was the owner of the former Oucangena View Tourist Home on River Street in Middleburgh. Later, he managed the Sunoco Station (now Ryan's) on Main Street, Middleburgh.

Mr. Youmans was a past president of the Middleburgh Rotary Club, as well as a free and accepted mason.

Mr. Youmans spent many winters at his home in Stuart, Fla. In the summertime, he enjoyed his hobby of antiques and collectibles.

Mr. Youmans was predeceased by his first wife, Alta (Mabie) Youmans; his second wife, Marion (Wally) Youmans; his only daughter, Donna Youmans; two brothers, James and John Otto Youmans; and a sister, Elizabeth Y. Frisbie Pulver.

Mr. Youmans is survived by one sister, Laura (Youmans) Brandow of Altamont; his beloved and devoted fiancee, Maude Haskin of Broome Center; two nieces, Helen Brandow Coughtry and Sybil Youmans Reisch; two nephews, William H. Brandow Jr. and John Kendell Youmams; two stepdaughters, Janette Brown Reynolds and Donna Carpinelli; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 14, 1999, at the Palmer & Shaylor Inc., Funeral Home, 63 River St., Middleburgh, with the Rev. Paul Ferenczy, of the Middleburgh Reformed Church, officiating. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Middleburgh Cemetery.

Evelyn Bottner
ONEONTA — Evelyn Bottner, 75, passed away at A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta, on Wednesday, May 12, 1999, after a recent illness.

She had retired as a legal secretary in 1986, and came to live in Cobleskill.

Evelyn is survived by her son, Alfred Bottner, his wife, Mindy, and granddaughter, Emily Bottner; her sister, Lila Lehnhardt of Cobleskill; and niece and nephew, Carol and Arthur Cuthbert of East Worcester.

She was predeceased by her husband, Alfred Bottner; her parents, Minnie and James McKeown; and four brothers, Walter, Harold, Charles and William McKeown.

Burial will be in Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale.

Arrangements are being handled by Grants Funeral Home, 571 Suffolk Ave., Brentwood. Calling hours are 10 a.m to noon on Monday, May 17, 1999. Burial to follow at 1 p.m. in Long Island National Cemetery.

Millicent Rendo
MORRIS — Graveside memorial services for Mrs. Millicent Rendo, a former resident of Morris, will be held Saturday, May 15, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the Rendo Family plot in Hillington Cemetery, in Morris, with the Rev. Kip Stratton officiating.

August Maul
SCHENEVUS — August Maul, 91, of Badeau Hill Road, died Tuesday, May 11, 1999, at his residence.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Heller Funeral Home, Schenevus.

Mary N. Miller
ONEONTA — Mary N. Miller, 105, passed away Tuesday, May 11, 1999, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home, where she had been a resident since 1980.

She is survived by a sister, Dorothy Sargent of Vestal; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Louise France of Oneonta.

Services will be held at a later date at Atonement Lutheran Church, where she was the oldest member.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

John J. Halloran
SIDNEY — John J. Halloran, 69, of Sidney, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 12, 1999, at his home.

He was born Oct. 15, 1929, to the late John T. and Anna (Hughes) Halloran in Woodside.

John served his country in the National Guard of the United States Infantry from 1949 to 1952.

He married his wife, Mary McDermott on June 14, 1952, in South Ozone Park.

John was employed as a New York state trooper based at Troop C, Sidney, where he retired as a sergeant in 1984. After retirement, John was employed by C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

John was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 4937, where he served as treasurer. John was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus Rev. J.F. Hourigan Assembly, Binghamton. He was an usher at Sacred Heart Church, and a Boy Scout leader. He was also a member of the P.B.A. of New York State Troopers and an inspector for the Delaware County Board of Elections.

John is survived by his wife, Mary Halloran of Sidney; four sons and daughters-in-law, Lt. Col. John J. and Nila Halloran Jr. of Lake Charles, La., Patrick and Jane Halloran of Bainbridge, G/Sgt. Kevin and Marilyn Halloran of Yuma, Ariz., and Joseph and Deborah Halloran of Norwich; three daughters and sons-in-law, Catherine Leggett of Sidney, Colleen and Michael Lydston of Sidney and Maureen and Louis Schwarzman of Montgomery, Ala.; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, May 15, 1999, at Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, at 9 a.m., with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor, officiating. Friends may call Friday, May 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. There will be a Knights of Columbus Service at 8 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad or Sacred Heart Church, Sidney.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.
