Jessie M. Miller
MILFORD — Mrs. Jessie M. Miller, 79, died Tuesday morning, March 16, 1999, at The Meadows.
Jessie was born Aug. 19, 1919, in Oneonta, the daughter of Arnold and Gladys (Deming) Van Bumble.
She married Howard Miller on Aug. 8, 1937, in Portlandville.
Jessie was a retired employee of Astrocom Electronics in Colliersville.
Her father died in World War I, while serving with the United States Army and she was raised by her grandparents, Richard and Maude Deming in the Gifford Hill area of Oneonta.
She was a former member of the Milford Presbyterian Church.
Jessis was a devoted mother and grandmother and is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Howard and Catherine Miller; and two granddaughters, Casandra and Elizabeth Miller of Milford; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Marie and Charles Husted of Syracuse and Maude and James Cobbett of Pennsylvania; and a sister, Dorothy Simons of Denver, Colo.; one brother-in-law, Perry Miller and his wife, Dee, of Stamford; a sister-in-law, Alberta Miller of Schenectady; and a niece and two nephews.
Jessie was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Howard Miller, on Oct. 15, 1986.
A graveside service will be held in the spring at Milford Cemetery, Milford. Jessie will be placed in the Bookhout private burial vault to await burial in the spring.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Milford Fire Department and Emergency Squad.

Evelyn Herdeker
ENDICOTT — Evelyn Herdeker, 71, formerly of Sidney, passed away Tuesday, March 16, 1999, in Endicott.
She was born May 30, 1927, to the late Guy and Mary Salisbury Wright in Unadilla.
Evelyn was employed by E.C.D. of Bendix, Sidney, as a harness assembler, until she retired in 1978.
She was a member of the American Legion Women's Auxiliary, Sidney.
Evelyn is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Albert and Lori Herdeker of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; four grandchildren, Aaron, Lauren, Ashley and Eric; sister, Percilla Price of Sidney; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Elizabeth Cole and Sarah Horth.
Services are private and at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.
Frank J. Heffernan
HIGHLAND — Frank J. Heffernan, 94, died Monday, March 15, 1999, at the Hudson Valley Nursing Center, Highland.
He was born July 7, 1904, in Rye, the son of Thomas F. and Mary (Passmore) Heffernan.
He was married for 47 years to Mary Louise Garwick, who died in 1983. He was remarried to Maria Stucin of Cooperstown, who survives him.
As a young man, he was active in the YMCA, local politics and was a volunteer fireman. He worked on the New Haven Railroad until admitted to Pratt Institute, earning a bachelor's of science in electrical engineering. He was a lifetime member of IEEE. He worked 33 years for Otis Elevator Co., retiring as service manager for the Yonkers Service Division. He was a civilian employee of the United States Navy during World War II, building LSTs. Upon retirement, he moved to Cooperstown, where he joined the Pierstown Grange, Senior Citizens and First Presbyterian Church. He was a self-taught artist.
He was the beloved father of Ruth Sprague of New Britain, Conn., Dorothy Howitt of Highland, Carol Murdock of Greenville, S.C., and Diane Strand of Mesa, Ariz. He leaves nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Helen O'Keefe of Newport Beach, Calif.; and brother-in-law, Robert W. Garwick of Salado, Texas.
The family will hold a private memorial service.
Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Mary Ellen Herdman
MARGARETVILLE — Mary Ellen "Midge" Herdman of Old Route 28, Margaretville, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999, at home.
She was born Aug. 13, 1925, in Bushnellsville, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Olive Frasier White.
Midge was a lifelong area resident. She and her late husband, Kenneth, who was the caretaker of Winnisook Club, lived at the club at the base of Slide Mountain, for more than 40 years. She has been a resident of Margaretville for the past nine years.
Mrs. Herdman had been employed as ward clerk at the Margaretville Hospital for 30 years. She was an avid bowler and a past member of the Big Indian/Oliverea Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
Surviving is a daughter, Jane Cable of Big Indian; a son, Kenneth C. Herdman of Shandaken; a sister, Beatrice Every of St. Remy; three grandchildren, Christopher Cable, Trevor Lee Herdman and Emily Ellen Herdman; and two great-grandchildren, Katherine Cable and Katlyn Lee Bennett.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 20, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the E.B. Gormley Funeral Home, Main Street, Phoenicia, with the Rev. Ralph Darmstadt officiating. Burial to follow in Shandaken Rural Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Hilda G. Shaver
OTEGO — Mrs. Hilda G. Shaver, 86, died Monday evening, March 15, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.
She was born June 6, 1912, in Milford, the daughter of Frank Dudley Brown Morgan and Grace Jane Houghton.
Hilda married Everett Shaver on Feb. 24, 1930, at the Wells Bridge Parsonage, Wells Bridge.
Hilda was a lifelong resident of the Wells Bridge-Otego area.
She was a member of the Otego United Methodist Church, Home Bureau of Otsego County, Women's Christian Temperance Union, Otego Valley Grange, American Legion and was a Gold Star Mother. Hilda served as a den mother and associate Girl Scout leader in Otego.
Hilda is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Sherry Shaver of West Haven, Conn.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Robert Hunt of Sidney and Arlene and Richard Hoag of Wilson, N.C.; a daughter, Mary Kimble of Binghamton; one brother, Dudley Morgan of Otego; two sisters, Irene Chapman of Baldwin Park, Calif., and Blanche Johnson of New Berlin; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Everett Shaver, on Aug. 24, 1997; a son, Gerald Shaver, who died in the Korean War; and three brothers, Kenneth, Glenn and Stewart Morgan.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 20, 1999, at her church, the Otego United Methodist Church. Her pastor, the Rev. Fred Albrecht, will officiate. Hilda will be placed in the Bookhout private vault to await burial in the spring at Otego Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 30 River St., Otego, Friday, from 7 p.m. till 9 p.m.

William Brayton Sr.
JEFFERSON — William P. Brayton Sr., 89, of East Jefferson Road, Jefferson, died Wednesday, March 17, 1999, at his residence.
He was born Dec. 17, 1909, at Rensselaer, the son of Arthur W. and Mary (McNally) Brayton.
Bill was married to Edna Cross on April 17, 1947, in Rensselaer. Edna died March 17, 1988.
He was a United States Navy veteran during World War II, serving as a chief petty officer with the 125th Naval Construction Battalion in the Pacific Theater.
Bill was employed as a guard officer for 25 years with the New York state Department of Corrections, both at the Clinton Prison at Dannemora and the Summit Youth Camp at Summit. He retired in June of 1972.
He was a member of St. Anna's Roman Catholic Church at Summit, the Cobleskill Elks Club, the Lt. Harry Pruden Jr. VFW Post at Stamford, the 121st Calvary B Troop at Pine Camp and the Morgan Horse Association.
Bill is survived by a daughter, Karen Ann Brayton of Jefferson; a son and daughter-in-law, William P. and Kathy Brayton Jr.; and his beloved grandchildren, Erin, Emily, Adam, Zak and Ali. Also surviving are nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Robert C. Brayton.
A funeral Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 22, 1999, at St. Anna's Catholic Church in Summit, with the Rev. Edward Golding, pastor, as the offerant. The burial will be at Holy Sepulehre Cemetery in East Greenbush.
Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 W. Main St., Stamford, at their convenience Sunday afternoon and evening. The family will be in attendance between 7 and 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Evelyn D. Oakley
STAMFORD — Evelyn D. Oakley, 80, of 42 River St., Stamford, died Wednesday, March 17, 1999, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.
She was born March 27, 1918, at Stamford, the daughter of Walter and Lina (Borst) Crosby.
Evelyn was married to LaVerne G. Oakley on May 27, 1936, in Hobart. LaVerne died Dec. 14, 1982.
Evelyn was a resident of Stamford most of her life, but lived for a time at both Seneca Falls and Bovina Center.
She was a member of the Stamford United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women of the church.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Leon and Evelyn Johns of Stamford and Lawrence and Rose Butkiewicz of Walters, Okla.; grandchildren, Greg, Laurie, Sean and Michelle; great-grandchildren, Patrick, Maxwell and Breanna; a sister, Marian Petrishen of Stamford; and a brother and sister-in-law, Eugene and Jacqueline Crosby of Bradenton, Fla. Also surviving are nieces and nephews and a dear friend, Elsie Oppenheimer of Stamford.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 20, 1999, at the Stamford United Methodist Church, Stamford, with the Rev. Kenneth Crosby, nephew of the deceased, officiating. Burial will be in the Stamford Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 W. Main St., Stamford, at their convenience Friday afternoon and evening. The family will be in attendance between 2 and 4 p.m. and 7 and 9 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Virgil E. Houck
WALTON — Virgil Ellsworth Houck passed away at his home on Thursday, March 18, 1999.
Virgil was born in Walton on Dec. 25, 1922, the son of Lawrence and Florence (Beers) Houck.
Virgil was a World War II Navy veteran, member of the VFW and United States Naval Cryptologic Veterans Association and past president and member of the Club Royale.
He was an avid golfer, bowler and gardener, but his greatest joy was his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Willa Hall Houck; his son, William, and wife, Suzanne, of Houston, Texas; his son, Stephen, and wife, Gaye, of Walton; grandchildren, Vanessa and Jason of Houston, Texas, and Tarra and Robert Barnhart and Melissa Houck of Walton; great-grandson, Dustin Barnhart; and his brother, Eric, and wife, Ruth of Walton.
He was predeceased by one brother and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held at Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc., Funeral Home, Walton, Sunday, March 21, 1999, at 2:30 p.m., with the Rev. Dr. Miriam L. Hathaway, of the Walton United Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.

Erwin F. Pelletier
PORT RICHEY, Fla. — Erwin F. Pelletier, 83, of Port Richey, Fla., formerly of Edmeston, died peacefully at home on Saturday, March 6, 1999, after a brief illness.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Eva; and three children, Paul Pelletier of Stoneville, N.C., Sylvia Zachow of Chittenango, N.Y., and Tonya Coble of Jamestown, N.C. Also surviving Erwin are one brother, the Rev. Elwin Pelletier of Santa Ana, Calif.; one sister, Carrie Coulter of Warrensburg, N.Y.; and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Lester (Evelyn) Pelletier of Olmstedville, N.Y., and Mrs. Howard (Ione) Pelletier of North Creek, N.Y. Erwin is also survived by eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
"God looked around his garden and saw an empty place. He then looked down from heaven and saw your tired face. He put his arms around you and took you in his care, To make up for your sufferings, He wanted you up there. It broke our hearts to see you go but you did not go alone, For part of us went with you the day God called you home."
A memorial service will be arranged at a later date.

Edna I. Freyer
SIDNEY — Edna I. Freyer, 85, of Masonville, passed away Wednesday, March 17, 1999, at the Skilled Nursing Facility, Sidney.
She was born Jan. 1, 1914, to the late Antti "Andrew" and Se"-lma Nixson Kero in Duluth, Minn.
Edna married Johann M. Freyer on Oct. 17, 1937. He predeceased her on Jan. 31, 1981.
Edna is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Martin J. and Joyce Freyer of Masonville and Robert E. and Pauline Freyer of Elgin, S.C.; one daughter and son-in-law, Anita and Dennis Stephan of Elgin, S.C.; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 20, 1999, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 8:30 p.m., with the Rev. David Gatje, pastor of Trout Creek Community Church, officiating. Friends may call Saturday, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral chapel.
Entombment will be in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens, Columbia, S.C., on Tuesday, March 23, 1999, at 11 a.m.
