Josefa Pantoja
FLY CREEK — Josefa Pantoja, 88, of Fly Creek died Sunday morning, March 14, 1999.
Josefa was born Sept. 22, 1910, in Vega Alta, Puerto Rico, a daughter of Jose and Cruz (Concepsion) Serrano.
Josefa married Luis Pantoja on Jan. 1, 1932, in Vega Alta, Puerto Rico.
She worked as a seamstress in New York City for many years, before moving to Ft. Lauderdale.
Mrs. Pantoja will be remembered for her love of sewing for family and friends as well as her devotion to her family.
She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Aida and Bruce Ostapeck of Fly Creek, Violet and Julio Cuesta of Gaithersburg, Md., and Carmen and Jose Nieves of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; a son, Jose Pantoja of Fly Creek; many grandchildren, great- and great-great-grandchildren; and a cousin, Isabell Concepsion.
She was predeceased by her husband, Luis Pantoja, on Sept. 27, 1989.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 17, 1999, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church Center in Cooperstown, with Father John R. Roos officiating. Calling hours will be on Tuesday, March 16, 1999, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when the family will be in attendance.

John Schemm Jr.
MILFORD — John Schemm Jr. 71, of Milford died Saturday morning, March 13, 1999, at his home.
He was born on Dec. 5, 1927, in Passaic, N.J., a son of John and Jewel (Pelak) Schemm Sr.
He married Caroline Gorence on Jan. 15, 1950, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown.
As a young child, John moved, with his family, from New Jersey to the Laurens area, where he attended Laurens Central School.
On April 12, 1945, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country during World War II on the aircraft carrier USS Midway. Following his discharge, on July 16, 1946, he returned to Cooperstown and worked as a meat cutter at the A&P. He then went into construction work in Messena and worked on the St. Lawrence Seaway. He returned to Cooperstown and worked for many years as a meat cutter at Danny's Market and later at Michael's Market, retiring in the late 1970s.
He was a member of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Chruch and the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No.7128 in Cooperstown.
John is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Caroline Schemm of Milford; one son and daughter-in-law, John Schemm III and his wife, Diane, of Milford; one daughter and son-in-law, Louise Schemm Seaver and her husband, Brigham, of Ocean City, N.J.; four grandchildren, Sara Schemn and John Schemm IV, both of Milford, Robert Seaver of Texas and John Seaver of Colorado; three sisters, Lillian Rohrer of California, Mildred Freer of Florida and Dorothy Darby of New Jersey; three brothers, Peter Schemm of California, and Richard and Robert Schemm, both of New Jersey; many nieces and nephews and many sisters-in-law.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 17, 1999, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. John R. Roos, pastor of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will be at a later date in St. Mary's Cemetery in Index.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 p.m. until service time on Wednesday, when John's family will be in attendance.

Marion F. Sloan
SPRINGFIELD CENTER — Mrs. Marion Flagg Sloan, 96, of Springfield Center, died early Saturday morning, March 13, 1999, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law in Guilderland.
She was born on June 1, 1902, in Springfield Center, a daughter of William and Agnes (Crain) Flagg.
She married Charles G. Sloan on June 30, 1923, in Cooperstown and had continued to live in Springfield Center until Mr. Sloan's death on June 21, 1971.
Mrs. Sloan was a graduate of the Springfield Center Union School and subsequently graduated, in 1922, from the Oneonta Normal School, now the State University College at Oneonta.
She was a dedicated teacher for 43 years, retiring in 1967. She was proud of the fact that her entire teaching career was in the Springfield community, starting in a one-room schoolhouse at Mud Lake, then to the West Village School in Puckertown, then to East Springfield, and finally to the Springfield Center Elementary School. She taught four generations of students from the community. She often reflected on the growth and change in education over the four decades, and the educational direction provided by the 10 different principals under whom she taught.
She was active in the State University College at Oneonta Alumni Association, as well as in the New York State and Otsego County Retired Teachers' Associations.
Retired for more than 30 years, she was energetic and active right up to her death. Her many interests included searching for antiques, reading, handwork, cooking, birdwatching and cultivating flowers. An avid New York Yankees fan, she attended a game at Yankee Stadium at the age of 95, and rarely missed a televised game. She was a fountain of information about the Springfield community and was often called upon to contribute to historical projects.
Mrs. Sloan is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Stephen Sloan and his wife, Mary Louise Sloan, of Guilderland. Dr. Sloan was the longest tenured secretary of the New York State Senate prior to his retirement from a 30-year career in government service in 1997. In addition, Mrs. Sloan is survived by two granddaughters, Kimberly Sloan Milza of Forest Hills and Pamela Lynn Sloan of Coram. Kimberly is a finance analyst with CNBC and is married to Dr. John Milza. Pamela is a third-year medical school student at the State University at Stony Brook and is engaged to Mr. Dean Discenza.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles G. Sloan, and three sisters, Winifred Jackson, Ella Flagg and Frances Leonard.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 17, 1999, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Santino J. Titta, pastor of the Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church in Springfield Center, officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Springfield Center Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 16, 1999, when Mrs. Sloan's family will be in attendance. Father Titta will conduct a prayer service at the funeral home at 4 p.m. that day.

Charles Van Buren
SYRACUSE — Charles C. Van Buren, 78, of 3344 Stiles Rd., Syracuse, died Thursday, March 4, 1999, at his home.
He was born in Seward, March 12, 1920, son of Ford and Edith Van Buren.
He lived in the Syracuse area since 1950. He graduated from Franklin Central School.
He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II serving in Italy and North Africa, as a Sergeant aircraft mechanic. He was a specialist welder with General Electric, retiring in 1985, after 35 years.
Mr. Van Buren enjoyed golf, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of the Hillview Community Baptist Church in Baldwinsville.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Marie; three daughters and their husbands, Norman and Joann Bertollini, John and Margaret Heins and James and Laurie Lippke, all of Baldwinsville; a son, Peter of Meridian; three sisters and brother-in-law, Donald and Estella Trask of Schenevus, Edith Jester of Oneonta and Dorothy Van Deusen of Westford; a brother and his wife, Martin and Ethel Van Buren of Oneonta; two sister-in-laws, Christine Van Buren of Zephryhills, Fla., and Marjorie Van Buren of Oneonta; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; a son, Gerard; two sisters, Harriet Mitchell and Mildred Peck; and two brothers, Ford and Byron Van Buren.
Private services were held at Falardeau Funeral Home. A memorial service was held March 13, 1999, at the Hillview Community Baptist Church in Baldwinsville.
Allison F. Meres
WALTON — Allison F. Meres, 68, of Upper Loomis Brook Road, Walton, died on Sunday, March 14, 1999, at home.
Al was born May 23, 1930, in Franklin, the son of Angie and Dortha Thomas Meres.
He was married to Beverly Bartow on Dec. 8, 1951, in Walton. She survives.
He served in the Army from 1951-1953, as a paratrooper.
Al was employed by the New York State Department of Transportation, retiring in 1985, as a highway maintenance supervisor. He then drove a bus for ARC, was superintendant of Walton Cemetery and then a custodian at Southside Mall.
He was a member of the Walton Free Methodist Church, the Walton Grange, where he was past master, Masonville Grange, VFW and American Legion and the Missing Parts Antique Engine Club.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Sharon Meres of Bainbridge and Roy and Tawny Meres of East Branch; three daughters and sons-in-law, Penny and Gary Sherman of Walton, Cindy Meres of Walton and Bernice and John Shelton of Sidney Center; three sisters, Marie Church of Masonville, Hazel Bagley of Florida and Alice MacIntyre of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
There are no calling hours or services at this time. Cremation with final disposition at Walton Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
Memorials to the Walton Free Methodist Church Building Fund, the Walton Emergency Squad or Catskill Area Hospice in his name appreciated.

Cecil E. Morse
PRATTSVILLE — Cecil E. Morse of Prattsville died Monday, March 15, 1999, at Margaretville Memorial Hospital.
He was born on March 18, 1913, in Bedell, the son of Robert and Anna Meisner.
Mr. Morse was a longtime member of the Prattsville Fire Company and Rescue Sqaud, the Virgil E. Deyo American Legion Post No. 1327 in Prattsville and the James F. Carty, DSC VFW Post No. 1545 in Windham. He was also an avid hunter and fisher who enjoyed playing his harmonica.
He is survived by his sons, Richard and wife, Emily, of Prattsville and Billy Butts of Hudson. He was the grandfather of Tonya and Kimberly Morse of Prattsville and William, Gordon, Brian, Ida, and Cathyann and their respective families. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, as well as great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was predeceased by his loving wife, Catherine, on Oct. 31, 1993, and his son, Kevin in 1975.
Calling hours to be held at Decker Funeral Home, Windham, on Wednesday, March 17, 1999, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service to be held on Thursday, March 18, at 11 a.m. at the Prattsville United Methodist Church, with Pastor Ellen Oliveto officiating. Interment to follow this spring at the Fairlawn Cemetery, Prattsville.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Prattsville Fire Co. and Rescue Squad would be greatly appreciated.
Theodore Carman
PRATTSVILLE — Theodore "Ike" Carman, 95, of Prattsville, died Thursday, March 11, 1999, at Albany Medical Center after a short illness.
He was born in Prattsville and was a lifelong resident.
He was associated with the J&A Carman Trucking Co. of Prattsville and Albany for 45 years.
For a period of 10 years he was the president of the Board of Education of the Gilboa-Conesville Central School District.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Adele Gardner Carman, and a son, George Carman of Guilderland. He is also survived
by three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Cremation will be at Vale Crematorium. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be at a future date in Fairlawn Cemetery, Prattsville.

Adelore Balenger
NAPLES, Fla. — Adelore "Shorty" Lewis Balenger, 95, of Naples, Fla., died Sunday, March 14, 1999, in Naples, Fla.
He was born Feb. 21, 1904, in Gladstone, Mich., the son of Isaac and Wilhemina (Hibbard) Balenger.
He married Adelle L. LaBombard on Nov. 12, 1925. She died Dec. 2, 1977.
He spent his childhood in the Gladstone, Mich., area and moved to New Berlin in 1942.
He worked for I.L. Richer Company in New Berlin.
He was a member of St. Theresa's Catholic Church, New Berlin.
He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Edwin and Eleanor Bennett of Naples, Fla.; one grandson, Nile and Rosemary Bennett; one granddaughter, Roberta and Robert Bowlby; one great-granddaughter, Kristina Krob; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held Thursday, March 18, 1999, at 10 a.m. at St. Theresa's Catholic Church, New Berlin, with Fr. Francis Case, of St. Theresa's Catholic Church, New Berlin, officiating. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, March 17, 1999, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin. Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 8 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home.

Everett C. Eiholzer
COLUMBUS — Everett C. Eiholzer, 58, of the town of Columbus, died Sunday, March 14, 1999, at home in the town of Columbus.
He was born July 23, 1940, in Earlville, the son of Carl T. and Ruth E. (Wratten) Eiholzer.
He spent his childhood in New Berlin and Columbus area. He was a graduate of New Berlin Central School. He was a dairy farmer.
He is survived by three brothers, Edward Eiholzer, Joseph Eiholzer and Stephen Eiholzer, all of the town of Columbus; and one sister, Mrs. Kent (Mary Ellen) Taylor of Madison, Wis.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 17, 1999, at St. Theresa's Catholic Church, New Berlin, with Fr. Francis Case, of St. Theresa's Catholic Church, New Berlin, officiating. Interment will be in St. Paul's Catholic Cemetery, Norwich. Serving as pall bearers are Tom Winkler, Ken Fairchild, Jeffrey Conroe, Richard Ackerman, John Mitchell and Robert Chase.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, March 16, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Parley E. Harris Sr.
UNADILLA — Parley E. Harris Sr., 81, of Unadilla, passed away Tuesday, March 16, 1999, at Countryside Care Facility, Delhi.
He was born March 12, 1918, in Oneonta, to the late Albert and Myrtle Bush Harris. At the age of 2 he was raised by his grandparents, Orville and Margaret Belinger Baldwin.
After attending the Unadilla School system, Parley married Helen Miner on March 19, 1939. She predeceased him on Feb. 18, 1958.
Parley was employed by J.W. Vancott & Son, Sidney, until he served his country in the United States Army from 1942-1945. Following the military, Parley drove for Whittakers, Sidney, for 15 years. He was employed by the town of Sidney Highway Department for 11 years before retiring. Parley then managed the East Sidney Dam Capsite from 1980 to 1985.
Parley was also a member of MacDonald Hose Fire Department, Sidney, for 17 years, was a member of the American Legion, Unadilla, and the Lodge of the Elks, No. 2175, Sidney.
Parley is survived by three sons and daughter-in-laws, Parley E. and Beverly Harris Jr. of Gooseneck, S.C., George and Shirley Harris of Masonville and Dennis and Carol Harris of Unadilla; one daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Herman Zeidner of Unadilla; three brothers, Robert Kirkham, William Kirkham and Homer Birdsall; three sisters, Margaret Houck, Ella Kirkham and Wanda Birdsall; 12 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
He was also predeceased by a sister, Annagene Birdsall.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 18, 1999, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 9 p.m., with the Rev. Evelyn Lintern, of United Methodist Church, Guilford, officiating. Friends may call Thursday, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in the spring.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
