Anita Kurtz
ONEONTA — Anita Miriam (Allen) Kurtz, 84, of Oneonta, died Monday evening, Feb. 22, 1999, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.
Anita was born in Passaic, N.J., on Aug. 19, 1914, the daughter of Howard Allen and Azalea (Collins) Allen.
She grew up in Passaic and Nutley, N.J., and the family later moved to Wilmington, Del., where Anita attended the University of Delaware. After graduation, she taught home economics at Mt. Pleasant School in Wilmington, Del.
Anita married Harry W. Kurtz in Wilmington, Del., in June 1942, and they moved to Oneonta in 1948.
A devoted mother of four children, she was a member of the Oneonta YMCA, the Oneonta Garden Club, a board member of the Family Service Society and the Lutheran Church of the Atonement for some years. Anita and Harry were fond of traveling and took many trips to Europe and Hong Kong, cruises to the Caribbean, and spent recent winters in Florida.
Anita is survived by her husband; sons, Terry A. Kurtz of Navarre, Fla., and Randall C. Kurtz of Schenectady; daughters, Barbara D. Kurtz Brigode of Bradenton, Fla., and Penny A. Kurtz Spataford of Watervliet; sons-in-law, Harold Brigode and Guy Spataford; daughter-in-law, Glenda (Pace) Kurtz; and sisters, Constance Allen of Lakehurst, N.J., and Enid Weischedel of Riverside, Calif.
A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.
John Dibble
CINCINNATUS — John Dibble, 74, passed away at his residence in Cincinnatus on Monday, Feb. 15, 1999.
He was born on Aug. 21, 1924, in Bloomville, the son of James and Rena (Constable) Dibble.
He was a World War II veteran, having served in the United States Navy.
John was predeceased by three brothers, Clarence of Oneonta, Lloyd of Bloomville and William of East Meredith; and two sisters, Margaret Carmody of Sidney and Elva Jurgens of Waterloo.
He is survived by six brothers, Marshall of Oneonta, James of Delhi, Leo of Waterloo, Everest of Gilbertsville, Donald of South New Berlin and Charles of Zephyrhills, Fla; and one sister, Viola Hiatt of Orlando, Fla. Also surviving are one daughter, Linda Pittsley of Cincinnatus; three sons, John Jr. of Bethlehem, Pa., Charles of Quakertown, Pa., and William of Central Square; as well as several nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
At his request, calling hours only were held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, at the Black Funeral Home in Cincinnatus.
It is suggested that memorial contributions in his memory be made to Hospice Care in Cortland County, or to the American Cancer Society, Southern Tier in Binghamton.
Effie E. Ruparshek
YOUNGSTOWN — Mrs. Effie E. Ruparshek, 81, of Youngstown and formerly of Christian Hill, died Monday morning, Feb. 22, 1999, at Mount St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston.
She was born on Oct. 23, 1917, in South Kortright, a daughter of Valentine and Laura (Kasmer) Swantak.
She married Frank J. Ruparshek on June 29, 1957, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oneonta. Mr. Ruparshek died on June 1, 1977.
Mrs. Ruparshek grew up in South Kortright and attended the Bloomville School before moving to Oneonta. In 1948, when Oneonta was celebrating its Centennial, she was selected Miss Otsego County. A telephone operator for the New York Telephone Co. in Oneonta until 1957, Mrs. Ruparshek had also been a waitress at Bresee's Famous Health Bar.
She was a member of Hartwick Grange No. 746, Otsego County Pomona Grange, New York State Grange and Farmer's Independent Benevolent Society. An enthusiastic homemaker, Mrs. Ruparshek enjoyed baking and won many baking contests. She also enjoyed flowers and gardening and was an avid birdwatcher.
Mrs. Ruparshek is survived by one daughter, Cynthia E. Freck of Youngstown; one granddaughter, Elizabeth A. Freck of Merida, Venezuela; five sisters and one brother-in-law, Mary Chapman of Bloomville, Jennie Meeghan of South Jefferson, Sophie Cole of Delh, Ann and Earl Hotaling of East Meredith and Helen Sega of Richmondville; two brothers and four sisters-in-law, Joseph and Wilma Swantak of Oneonta, Frank and Ethel Swantak of South Kortright, Lila Swantak of South Kortright and Ruby Swantak of Washington; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by one sister, Antoshia Swantak; and two brothers, Michael and Stephen Swantak.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church Parish Center in Cooperstown, with the Rev. John R. Roos, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in May in St. Mary's Cemetery in Index.
Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Thursday evening, Feb. 25, 1999, from 7 to 9 p.m. when Mrs. Ruparshek's family will be in attendance.

Margaret Bartlett
NEW BERLIN — Margaret Mae Bartlett died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999, at Chase Memorial Nursing Home, New Berlin.
She was born July 26, 1908, in Van Etten, the daughter of Elbert D. and Sarah J. (McMillen) Whitley.
In Jackson, Pa., she married Robert J. Bartlett. They shared 60 years of marriage.
She lived in the Unadilla, Franklin and New Berlin areas for most of her life. In the Sidney Center, Franklin and New Berlin schools, she was an elementary teacher.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, New Berlin, Victory Rebekah Lodge No. 426 100 F, South New Berlin, Fort Nightly Study Club, South New Berlin, Washington Reading Club, Franklin, and the Homemaking Club, Pittsfield.
Mrs. Bartlett is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Carl (Barbara) Olson of Afton and Mrs. Roys (MaryLou) Dixson of Bainbridge; one son, Robert W. Bartlett of Otego; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; one sister, Mrs. Watson (Harriet) Freeman of Jamesville; several nieces, one nephew and several cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert J. Bartlett; her brother, Raymond Whitley; her sister, Lois Huller; and her granddaughter, Sandra Olson.
Funeral services will be held at The Joyce Funeral Home Inc., Main Street, Unadilla, on Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Paul Furniss, of the Unadilla Baptist Church, officiating.
The family will receive friends at The Joyce Funeral Home Inc., on Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m., prior to the funeral service.
Burial will be in the spring at Union Cemetery, East Sidney.

Garry Dwayne Close
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. — Garry Dwayne Close, 57, of Northampton, Mass., and formerly of Margaretville, N.Y., died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999, at the Veterans Medical Center, Northampton, Mass.
He was born Sept. 4, 1941, in Margaretville, N.Y., the son of Eldon Close and Nettie VanKeuren.
He was single. He served in the United States Air Force from Feb. 29, 1960, to Dec. 12, 1963.
He attended Margaretville Central School. He grew up on a dairy farm in Jones Hollow Road, town of Andes.
He is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Gilbert and Susan Close of Downsville; three sisters, Mrs. Eugene (Catherine) Davis of Trenton, Fla., Mrs. Dorothy Truesdell of Oneonta and Mrs. Leonard (Betty) Utter of Margaretville; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by one sister, Janet Marie Weaver on Sept. 14, 1976.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, N.Y., with the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh officiating. Committal services will be in the spring at Andes Cemetery, Andes.
Calling hours will be held Friday, from 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be in attendance at the Hynes Funeral Home.
Contributions may be made in memory of Garry to the Memorial Fund of the Advent Christian Church, Margaretville, N.Y.

Mary Anne Wood
COOPERSTOWN — Mary Anne Wood, 33, died peacefully, at home, on Wednesday morning, Feb. 24, 1999, with her loving mom and her sister "Sas" (Sarah) at her side.
She was born on July 6, 1965, in Cooperstown, a beloved daughter of Dorothy (Stoddard) Wood and the late Robert W. Wood.
Mary Anne lived with her family in Cooperstown and enjoyed many camping trips with them throughout her life, including two trips to Disney World, which she loved to recall. Her favorite things included boat rides and picnics on the Susquehanna River with her parents, playing the piano, collecting dolls, and dancing and listening to country music. Mary Anne also had a fondness for animals and nature, and was a friend to the family's various dogs, cats and horses, throughout the years.
She had many friends in the community, including friends at the Hartwick ARC program, which she attended and with whom she enjoyed community activities and lunch dates.
Mary Anne possessed an inate understanding of other people's feelings. She was a witty and spunky young woman who liked to joke and tease close friends and family. She loved to give nicknames to people and her own nickname was "Miss Boomer." Mary Anne will be greatly missed by her family.
Mary Anne is survived by her mother, Dorothy Wood of Cooperstown; her three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Sarah Wood, Betsy and Ken Morris, and Barbara and Tim Gill, all of Cooperstown; and her brother, William Wood of Eugene, Ore. She was an aunt to Kyle Morris, Becky Gill and Jessy Gill, all of Cooperstown, and Daniel and Michael Wood of Pleasanton, Calif. She is also survived by her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Richard D. Wood of Oneonta; and her aunt, Sally Stoddard of Rome; as well as several cousins.
A service to celebrate Mary Anne's life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, 82 Chestnut St., Cooperstown, with the Rev. Lin R. Quinlan, co-pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, officiating. All friends are welcome. Burial will be in the spring at the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.
A private visitation, for family members only, will be held Friday evening.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts be made in Mary Anne's name to the National Down Syndrome Society, 666 Broadway, New York, N.Y. 10012-2317, specifying it be used for cardiac research; or to ARC Otsego, 35 Academy St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Donald E. Mudge
PRATTSVILLE — Donald E. Mudge, 80, of Route 23, Prattsville Road, Prattsville, died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999, at his residence.
He was born Jan. 19, 1919, in Millburg, the son of Don A. and Hazel (Garlow) Mudge.
He was first married to Alice E. Yeager in June of 1940. Alice died Jan. 9, 1991. He then married Aletha Tompkins in September of 1992.
Donald lived most of his life in the Prattsville area. He was a logger by trade and owned and operated a sawmill for many years. He also operated sawmills for several other people before he retired.
Donald was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II with the 1299th Engineers Combat Battalion serving in Japan and the Phillipine Islands. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Virgil E. Deyo American Legion Post in Prattsville. He was also a member of the Huntersfield Church.
He is survived by his wife, Aletha Mudge of Prattsville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Albert and Hope Mudge of Black River and Daniel and Lila Mudge of Grand Gorge; seven grandchildren, Dr. Kimberley Mudge of Brooklyn, Jessica Key of Texarkana, Texas, Jason and Rebecca Mudge of Grand Gorge, Nathan Bevins of Davenport, Misty Gardner of Downsville, Christina Gardner of Grand Gorge; two great-grandchildren, Vivianne and Morgan Key; three sisters, Greta Knowles of Greenville, Linda Neice of Florida and Roxie King of Maryland; one brother, Maurice Mudge of Hensonville; and several nieces and nephews.
Donald was predeceased by one son, Ronald Mudge.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at the Hall Funeral Home in Grand Gorge, with the Rev. Roger Shafer, pastor of the Huntersfield Church, officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in the Fairlawn Cemetery in Prattsville.
Friends may call at their convenience at the funeral home on Friday afternoon and evening. The family will be in attendance on Friday evening between 7 and 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Expressions of sympathy may be made in Donald's memory to either the Prattsville or Grand Gorge Rescue Squads.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford-Grand Gorge.
Mildred E. Kennedy
MILFORD — Mildred E. Kennedy, 74, of Milford, passed away unexpectedly at home on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999.
She was born June 26, 1924, in Oneonta, the daughter of the late Julian and Mary (Ingalls) Newell.
She married Thomas H. Kennedy Jr. on Jan. 11, 1946, in Colonie. They resided in Colorado Springs, Colo., for a year before moving to Milford, where they had resided since that time.
She graduated high school from Milford. She was employed in the Mica Plant in Oneonta, during World War II. She and her husband owned and operated the Texaco Gas Station and Restaurant in Milford for many years. She was well-known for her homemade pies. She was New York state certified as an assessor and was town of Milford assessor for 17 years. She was a member of the Milford United Methodist Church, New York State Historical Society, Davenport Historical Society, Otsego County Assessors Association, where she was secretary/treasurer, New York State Assessors Association and the Rochester Genealogical Society.
She is survived by her husband; son, Lloyd (Terry) Kennedy; brothers, Howard Newell of Florida, Robert Newell of Schenectady and Julian Newell Jr. of St. Louis, Mo.; sisters, Shirley Wilcox, Virginia Kiel and Betty McGinness, all of Schenectady; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by a brother, Russell Newell of Schenectady.
At her request, there will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, she would prefer any donations be made to the Milford Emergency Squad and Fire Department.
A funeral service will be held at the Milford United Methodist Church, 2 p.m. on Monday, March 1, 1999, with the Rev. Nancy Kozlowski, pastor of the Milford United Methodist Church, officiating, and Robert Pitcher assisting.
Mildred will be placed in the Tillapaugh Funeral Home receiving vault in Cooperstown. Burial will be in Milford Cemetery in the spring.

Eleanor M. Dye
EDMESTON — Eleanor M. Dye, 83, of Edmeston and formerly of South Edmeston, died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999, at M.I. Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
She was born Sept. 14, 1915, in Columbus, the daughter of Thaddeus E. and Ethel R. (Spurr) Chase.
She married Donald Schworm on Aug. 26, 1939, he predeceased her in 1940. She then married Charles DeVere Dye in June 1944, in West Edmeston. He predeceased her in 1982.
Eleanor graduated from New Berlin High in 1932, and then attended Oneonta Normal State Teachers College. She was a member of the South Edmeston Community Church, and served as a family care provider for more than 25 years.
Eleanor was an avid reader who traveled the world through National Geographic. She found pleasure in antiques and serenity in her church.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Gloria and William Palmer of Bloutville, Tenn., Rosemary and Wesley Stephens of Edmeston, Susan and John Wheeler of Edmeston, Linda and Gordon Boss of Pittsfield and LuAnn and LeRoy Fuller of South Edmeston; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; her sister, Mildred Sprague; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her son, Charles DeVere Dye Jr.; her sister, Doris Carter; and her brothers, Sidney Chase, Rolland Chase and Robert Chase.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. Jeff McLallen officiating. Calling hours are one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in the spring at Lambs Corners, South Edmeston.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Eleanor's memory to any of the following organizations: Edmeston Emergency Squad, American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.
