John Watanen
MARQUETTE, Mich. — John Watanen, 62, of 216 E. Hewitt Ave., Marquette, Mich., retired Northern Michigan University English professor, died early Thursday morning, Dec. 31, 1998, at Marquette General Hospital. Having successfully received a liver and kidney transplant in August, his death was the result of a recent fall.

He was born July 8, 1936, in Oneonta, the son of the late John and Aino (Aaltonen) Watanen Sr., he was raised in Laurens, later attending the State University College at Oneonta.

He received his A.B.D in English education from Bowling Green State University and began teaching at Northern Michigan University in 1968. Before coming to Northern he received a Fulbright Scholarship to teach in Finland for two years. At the time of his hire, he was the only Fulbright scholar on Northern's faculty.

During his years at Northern, he was active in professional leadership. He was one of four faculty members to help organize the Finnish Studies program, which consisted of courses in Finnish Culture, The History of Finland and Finns in America, the Cultural Geography of Finland and the Finnish language.

In 1970, he helped coordinate the first Finnish culture symposium, and in 1974, he was chairman at another Finnish culture week that attracted nationwide attention. In 1976, his work was recognized by the government of Finland and he was invested Knight First Class of the Order of the  White Rose of Finland.

Watanen was also active in faculty unionization. He has held local, statewide, and national posts with the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). He was integral in the 1976 unionization of Northern's faculty, being the first collective bargaining president responsible for contract implementation. He believed unionization was the single biggest benefit the faculty at Northern had achieved.

From 1977 to 1985, he served on the state Board of Education. He believed that the most significant individual in an elementary school was the principal, and that a good principal could turn a bad school around.

Above all, John Watanen was a teacher who enjoyed most the contact with his students. He seemed to be most comfortable when he was able to establish a mentor-like relationship with his students. He once said, "I always saw myself as simply another student who had been studying longer than anyone else in the classroom." Although he had no particular specialty, his specialty courses were always popular and well attended. In recent years, after discovering that students really didn't know much about the Vietnam War, he twice taught the literature and film of the war.

When he went on long-term medical leave, he was teaching the literature and film of the holocaust, which was also well attended. By incorporating film in his specialty courses, he was able to send a chilling presence to literature, knowing that people retain much more of what they see than what they hear or read.

After more than 30 years at Northern, John Watanen retired in May of 1998.

John Watanen was a man of many and varied interests. He was very politically active. He ran for the 11th Congressional District Democratic nomination in 1978, as well as serving on the State Board of Education.

He enjoyed computers and was particularly dedicated to the McIntosh computer. He was an avid reader, enjoyed traveling and listening to music. He was also a collector of anything and everything and his basement boasts of rare, unusual, and questionable "finds." John particularly enjoyed time spent with his family, especially his grandsons, and is survived by his wife, Marie L. (McSherry) Watanen, whom he married June 11, 1960, in Oneonta; his daughters and their families, Liisa and Max Watanen-Anderson and son, Alexander John Watanen, of Marquette, Mich., and Lydia and Jeff  Taylor and sons, Jacob and Dylan Taylor, of Marquette, Mich.; and his mother-in-law, Louise Mrozowski of Marquette, Mich.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Laing in 1987.

The family will receive friends at the Fassbender Funeral Home, Marquette, Mich., beginning at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999. An informal sharing of reflections and personal remembrances will follow at 6:30 p.m. in the funeral home.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Liver and Kidney Foundations and that all seriously consider the Gift of Life through organ donation.

Funeral arrangements are by the Fassbender Funeral Home, Marquette, Mich.
