Lois Julia Bowen
EXETER CENTER — Lois Julia Bowen, 90, of Exeter Center, died Sunday evening, Oct. 18, 1998, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.
She was born Nov. 29, 1907, in the town of Exeter, the daughter of Jay O. and Viola (Higgins) Joslyn.
On Oct. 21, 1926, she married Horace Y. Bowen. He predeceased her on July 10, 1982.
A lifelong resident of the town of Exeter, Lois was a homemaker who was a member and organist at the Exeter Center Methodist Church and had served as the church secretary/treasurer as well as past president of the United Methodist Women. She also served as treasurer of the Exeter Center Cemetery Association and was a member of the former West Exeter Grange, a member of the Edmeston Grange and Pamona Grange. In addition, she was a member of the Friendly Neighbors Club and the Edmeston Senior Citizens.
Surviving are her sons, Russell and Janet Bowen and Wesley and Hilda Bowen, both of Burlington Flats; her daughters, Marcia and Bob Ubner of Fly Creek and Charlene Mulford of Milford; 13 grandchildren, Karen Bowen, Marena Maier, Deborah Bennett, Bonnie Slentz, Scott Ubner, Colleen Renwick, Jeanette Mulford, Mark Ubner, Kevin Bowen, David Bowen, Daniel Bowen, Jason Mulford and Valerie Bowen; and six great-grandchildren, Natasha Bowen, Ryan Bennett, Blake Maier
She was predeceased by an infant daughter, Gladys, her grandson, Ronald A. Bowen, and her sisters, Myrtle J. Smith and Doris J. Baulch.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 21, 1998, at the Exeter Center Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Highfield officiating.
Calling hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 20, 1998, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the West Exeter Fire Department or The Exeter Center Methodist Church would be appreciated.

Janet Kelder Riss
SMITHTOWN — Janet Kelder Riss, 42, formerly of Catskill and Fleischmanns, died Sunday, Oct. 18, 1998, as a result of a automobile accident.
She was born Aug. 21, 1956, in Margaretville, the daughter of Ruth Alle Kelder and the late Amos Kelder.
She and her husband, the Rev. Timothy Riss, had recently been reassigned to Smithtown, after having been serving the Catskill Methodist Church for the past eight years. The family was at the Frankin United Methodist Church from 1984-1990, and before 1983, they were at the Fleischmanns United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Riss had been past president of the Hudson-North District of the United Methodist Women, and was very active in the choir and youth activities of all the parishes that their family had served.
She was a registered nurse and had worked at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, and had been the nurse at the Columbia-Greene Community College. She was currently employed at Seldon Medical in Seldon.
Surviving in addition to her mother, Ruth Kelder of Halcott Center, is her husband of 15 years, the Rev. Timothy Riss; two sons, Jonathan and Samuel Riss; a brother, Andrew Kelder; and a sister, Patricia Kelder, both of Halcott Center.
A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Riss will be held on Thursday, at 2 p.m., at the Halcott United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ralph Darmstadt officiating.
Friends will be received before the service at the church. The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to the Halcott UMC-Accessibility Fund, or the church's "Children in Poverty in Appalachia Fund."

Richard A. Bell Jr.
MASONVILLE — Richard A. "Dick" Bell Jr., 39, of Masonville, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, Oct. 18, 1998.
Dick was born on March 2, 1959, to Dick and Edith Moore Bell in Sidney.
He married Jayne Cutting, daughter of Halsey and Dorcus Cutting of Masonville, on Sept. 17, 1979.
Dick attended and graduated from Bainbridge Guilford High School.
He was the owner and operator of Bell Family Care Home in Masonville.
Dick got most of his enjoyment from his love of the outdoors, friends and family. He will be greatly missed by one and all.
Dick is survived by his parents, Dick and Edith Bell of Bainbridge; his beloved wife of 19 years, Jayne Bell of Masonville; his two sons, Richard A. Bell III of Masonville and Darren Edward Bell of Masonville; his sister, Cindy Blackman of Afton; his two brothers, Fred Bell of Bainbridge and Jodie Bell of Oneonta; his mother-in-law, Dorcus Cutting; his three brothers-in-law and their wives, Kenny and Sherry Cutting of Masonville, Gerald Cutting of Masonville and Billy and Shelly Cutting of Masonville; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 11 a.m. Alexander Coufos, presiding minister of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness, will officiate.
Friends may call Wednesday, Oct. 21, 1998, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Masonville Emergency Squad.
Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.
Everett L. Mackey
CANASTOTA — Everett L. Mackey, 85, of Seneca Avenue, Canastota, died Tuesday evening, Oct. 13, 1998, at his residence, following a brief illness.
He was born in the town of Franklin, on Nov. 29, 1912, he was the son of Czar and Mabel Jester Mackey.
A resident of this area for the past 56 years, Mr. Mackey was educated in Franklin schools and a graduate of Hartwick College, where he received his bachelor of science degree in business administration.
He married Thelma Niles in Franklin on May 25, 1940. Mrs. Mackey died on Sept. 2, 1983.
For more than 40 years, Mr. Mackey was the secretary-treasurer of the former Howes and Farrell Company, Inc. of Oneida. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Oneida.
Surviving is one nephew, Melvin Mackey of Barton; and four nieces, Mrs. James (Phyllis) Jennings of Unadilla, Mrs. Richard (Audrey) Strangeway of Grahamsville, Mrs. Paul (Eloise) Carney of Goose Creek, S.C., and Mrs. Durward (Audrey) Thayer of Oneonta.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 20, 1998, from the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Inc., 260 Main St., Oneida, with the Rev. William Cruikshank, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Oneida, officiating. Interment will be made in Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Oneonta.
Contributions in his memory may be made to the Memorial Fund of the First United Methodist Church, Main at Grove Streets, Oneida, 13421. Envelopes for this fund may be obtained at the funeral home.

Glenn R. Gavette
MARGARETVILLE — Glenn R. Gavette, 70, of Margaretville, died Monday, Oct. 20, 1998, at his residence.
He was born May 1, 1928, in Margaretville. The son of Howard Gavette and Dorothea Gill.
He married Edna Scott on April 11, 1954, in Margaretville.
He was a sergeant in the United States Army from 1950 to 1952.
He was a water treatment plant operator for New York City Board of Water Supply in Margaretville from 1960-1990, when he retired.
He was a lifelong resident.
He was a 50-year life member of Margaretville Fire Department, a member of the Middletown American Legion Post No. 216. Through the years he was active with the Hospital Ambulance Squad, the Boy Scouts, chairman of the Catskill Rail Committee, town of Middletown councilman and supervisor. He was also a committeeman for the town of Middletown Democratic Committee.
He enjoyed reading and politics.
He graduated from Margaretville Central School in 1947.
He is survived by his wife, Edna Scott Gavette of Margaretville; his three sons, Charles R. Gavette and wife, Juanita, of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Scott L. Gavette of Margaretville and Alan Gavette and wife, Sharon, of Margaretville; one sister, Dorris Gavette of Margaretville; five grandchildren, Keith, Kayla, Kristi, Christina and Lindsay; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by one brother, Richard Gavette.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. S. Hayden Walsh, officiating. Burial will be in the Margaretville Cemetery, Margaretville.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, Oct. 21, 1998, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home.

Maxine S. Turtur
WALTON — Maxine S. Turtur, 89, of 83 St. John St., Walton, died of natural causes, Monday, Oct. 19, 1998, at 5:32 p.m., at Chase Memorial Nursing Home, New Berlin.
She was born March 17, 1909, in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine. The daughter of Ralph and Ona (Whittier) Sanford.
She married Henry Turtur in 1949, in Staten Island.
She was a retired registered nurse from Delaware Valley Hospital, Walton, and previously was employed at Smith's Hospital in Walton.
She moved to Walton in 1949.
She was past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by her son, Carl (Kathy) Harlow of Walton; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a half-sister, Erna Ebron of New Jersey; and a special niece, Katherine "Kay" Seaman of Walton.
She was predeceased by her husband, Henry Turtur and her grandson, Henry Morris Harlow in 1986.
Funeral services will be on Friday, Oct. 23, 1998, at 11 a.m. at Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Home, Walton, with the Rev. L. Lawrence Dunlap, pastor of First United Methodist Church of Walton, officiating. Burial will be in the Walton Cemetery, Walton.
Calling hours are on Thursday evening, Oct. 22, 1998, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Home.

Sylvia Fe Shaw
OTEGO — Sylvia Fe Shaw, 5 months 28 days, of Otego, died Sunday, Oct. 18, 1998, at the Crouse Irving Hospital, Syracuse.
She was born on April 21, 1998, at Crouse Irving Hospital, Syracuse. The daughter of Raynor and Alison (Ryor) Shaw.
She is survived by her parents, Ray and Alison Shaw of Otego; and her big sister, Hannah Shaw of Otego.
A service to celebrate the life of Sylvia Fe Shaw will be held on Wednesday evening, Oct. 21, 1998, at Kingdom Hall, Oneonta, at 7 p.m. for those who wish to attend.

Roy J. Althiser Sr.
WORCESTER — Roy J. Althiser Sr., 81, of Worcester, died Tuesday, Oct. 20, 1998, at Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill after an extended illness.
He was born April 29, 1917, in Gallatinville, the son of Jacob and Elsie (Kilmer) Althiser.
He married Catherine M. Carentz on Dec. 14, 1946, in Worcester.
Mr. Althiser was a World War II United States Army veteran. He served with the 324th Infantry Division. He took part in the Normandy, Rhineland and Central European campaigns. He was the recipient of the European, African, Middle Eastern Medal with three Bronze Stars. He attained the rank of sergeant.
He moved to Worcester in 1945, and was a self-employed electrical contractor for 40 years.
Mr. Althiser was a member and past commander of the Worcester American Legion Post 1584 and a past member of the Worcester Fire Department.
He was of the Lutheran faith and enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Catherine M. Althiser of Worcester; twin sons and two daughters-in-law, Joseph J. and Barbara Althiser of Schenevus and Roy J. Jr. and Christine Althiser of Worcester; a grandson, Chad Althiser of Oneonta; four sisters, Molly Zullo of Hudson, Elsie Thorpe of Menands, Eleanor Race of Albany and Phyllis Hubbard of Schenevus; three brothers, Lloyd Althiser of New Lisbon, Rae Althiser Sr. of Schenevus and Jacob Althiser of Schenectady; brother-in-law, George Carentz of Sayville; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a grandson, Ryan James Althiser, two sisters, Natalie Kline and Ruth Althiser, and a brother, Charles Althiser.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 24, 1998, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 115 Main St., Worcester, with the Rev. Paul Messner, pastor of the Zion/St. John's Lutheran Church in Seward and Sharon Springs and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hartwick Seminary, officiating. Burial will follow at the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery, with full military honors presented by the Worcester American Legion Post 1584.
Calling hours will be held Friday, Oct. 23, 1998, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral chapel.
