Ellen Ploeger
WORCESTER — Ellen Downie Ploeger, 84, died Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at the Oneonta Nursing Home.
She was born Dec. 21, 1913, at home in Weehawken, N.J., the daughter of Archibald and Margaret (Arneil) Downie.
She married Theodore Rocklage Ploeger at the West End Presbyterian Church in Manhattan on June 18, 1949. He predeceased her on Jan. 26 of this year.
Ellen graduated from Memorial High School in West New York, N.J. in 1932. She worked as a secretary after graduation and at one time worked as secretary to the president of American Home Products.
During World War II, Ellen served as a Red Cross Volunteer Nurse's Aid (Grey Lady).
She was involved with the True Light Lutheran Mission in Chinatown, where she taught Sunday School and had an active Girl Scout troop.
Ellen moved with her husband to the Washington, D.C. area after they married and became active in the Northminster Presbyterian Church where she served as secretary, deacon, elder and clerk of session, as well as Sunday School superintendent.
She will be remembered for her sweet smile and caring heart.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Dorelle and Sid Chase of Worcester; two grandsons, Bryan and Matthew Ploutz, also of Worcester; a sister, Elizabeth Calvi of Delray, Fla; sister-in-law, Lynn Downie of Glendale, Ariz.; and two nephews, Howard Downie of Peoria, Ariz., and Douglas Downie of Davis, Calif.
According to Ellen's wishes there will be no calling hours or funeral. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Northminster Presbyterian Church, 7720 Alaska Ave., Washington, D.C. 20012, or to the Alzheimer's Research Fund.
Arrangements have been made by the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, Worcester.
Robert Knapp
ITHACA — Mr. Robert Knapp, 56, of Ithaca passed away Monday, Sept. 21, 1998.
Mr. Knapp was born in Oneonta, on Jan. 17, 1942, a son of Franklin and Florence (Faulkner) Knapp.
After his schooling in Milford, Robert served in the United States Marine Corps from 1960 to 1963.
Robert was a truck driver and worked most recently for A.R.G. Trucking in Phelps.
Mr. Knapp married Cheryl Burlingame, Oct. 17, 1981.
He was a former resident of Oneonta, but has lived in the Ithaca area for many years.
Robert was an avid NASCAR enthusiast.
Mr. Knapp is survived by his wife, Cheryl; his son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Lesley Knapp of Syracuse; a daughter, Jami Knapp, serving in the U.S. Navy in Jacksonville, Fla.; a grandson, Ryan Knapp of Syracuse; three sisters, Sandra Stone and her husband, Ronald, of Davenport, Iowa, Katherine Banta and her husband, Craig, of Latham, and Nancy McAdams of Cortland; two brothers and their wives, Bruce and Karen Knapp of Altamont, and Richard and Nancy Knapp of Davenport, Iowa; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, William Knapp.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, at 2 p.m., at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Milford with the Rev. Harry G. Myers, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Milford.
Calling hours will be on Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Milford.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
Marie V. Keller
SAG HARBOR — Marie V. Keller, 79, of Noyack, Sag Harbor died Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, at home with her family by her side.
She was born April 24, 1919, in the Bronx, the daughter of James V. and Elizabeth C. (Conklin) Denon.
She was the owner and operator of the Otsego Motel in East Springfield, from 1946 to 1986.
She married William A. Keller, Feb. 7, 1942. He predeceased her in 1990.
She was a member of the Southampton Elks Club, 1574 Club, past officer, and Women of the Moose, Chapter 1118, Riverhead.
She attended school in Queens.
She is survived by her children, Linda M. Keller of Stamford, Conn. and Sag Harbor, Donald W. Keller of Sag Harbor; her sister, Grace Williams of Floral Park; her brother, John Denon of Glen Cove; three grandchildren, Lucy, Kevin and Jack; and 12 nephews and nieces.
She was predeceased by her brother, Vincent Denon, and her sister, Ursula Conner.
There was an Elks Service on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, at 7:30 p.m. at the Yardley & Pino Funeral Home, Inc., Sag Harbor.
Parish prayers were held on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
A Mass will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, at 11 a.m. at the St. Andrews Roman Catholic Church, Sag Harbor.
Interment will be in the Southampton Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, N.Y. 11978, or St. Andrew's Church, Sag Harbor, or a charity of one's choice.
Marie C. Preston
LIVINGSTON — Marie C. Preston, 85, formerly of Hudson, died Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at the Adventist Nursing Home in Livingston.
Born on March 11, 1913, in Manhattan, she was the daughter of the late Valentine J. and Mary (Rooney) Neff.
She was a homemaker and member of Christ Church Episcopal in Hudson.
Surviving are her son, Frank R. Preston of Otego; daughter, Barb"ara A. Oles of Philmont; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother, Arthur V. Neff of Croton; and two sisters, Mrs. Rita Davis of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Mrs. Ogden Grey of Briarcliff.
Her husband, Frank Preston, died previously.
There are no calling hours.
Funeral services will be Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, at 11 a.m. from St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Philmont.
Interment will be in St. Thomas Lutheran Church Cemetery in Churchtown.
Memorials may be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Main Street, Philmont, N.Y. 12565.

Svend Guy Peterson
HARTWICK — Svend Guy Peterson, 82, of Hartwick died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, at his home, following a long illness.
He was born on Feb. 26, 1916, in Montreal, Canada, a son of Peter and Bertha (Hansen) Peterson.
He first married Myrtle Inez McCoy in 1944. She died on April 3, 1977. He then married Frances Becker in January 1978, who survives.
Svend spent his youth in Hartwick, graduating from Hartwick High School in 1935, where he was a star basketball player. He then attended Diesel Engineering School in New York City and with this training he sailed on "The Pilgrim," a large schooner owned by Phillips H. Lord.
During World War II, he served his country in both the Army Air Corps and the Merchant Marines.
Later settling in Buffalo, Svend was a city bus operator for 35 years. He also was a private business owner. In 1981, following his retirement from Niagara Frontier Transit, he returned to Hartwick, his boyhood home.
He was a member of the American Legion and the Moose Club, and an active contributor to the SPCA and the Humane Society of the United States. He was also an active participant at the Cooperstown Senior Citizen Nutrition Site.
Svend especially enjoyed his home, his garden and his many pets.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and James Kane Jr. of Longmeadow, Mass., and Venda and Allen Telfer of Suffolk, Va.; three grandsons, Chrisopher, Douglas and Jeffery Moss; two stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Janne and Tony Battaglia, and Betty and Dick Zimmerman; and two stepgrandchildren, Nicole and Karl.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown with the Rev. William A. Highfield, pastor of the West Exeter United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Hartwick Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, when Svend's family will be in attendance.

Steve Stancik
COOPERSTOWN — Steve Stancik, 87, of 428 Lee Boulevard, Utica, passed away on Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at St. Joseph's Nursing Home, Utica.
He was born on Dec. 18, 1910, in Stara Tura, Czechoslovakia.
He was educated in his native country.
Steve came to America at the age of 23 and had resided in Herkimer, and also at 8 Maple St. in Cooperstown.
He was a member of the Cooperstown Methodist Church and the North Utica First Baptist Church.
He was united in marriage to Mildred Sadlon in 1939. The couple had shared in a blessed union of 59 years.
For many years, Steve was employed by the Standard Furniture Company in Herkimer, and also by Mrs. Carl Gronewaldt (Tilton) as caretaker of Farmlands Estate in Cooperstown.
Surviving are his beloved wife, Mildred; his children, Jerry Stancik and his wife, Diane, of Jacksonville, Fla., Janet Stancik of Utica, and Kathleen Cornell and husband, Harold, of Utica; four grandchildren, Michael of Oneida, Sandy of Utica, and Jessica and Stephanie of Florida; two great-grandchildren, Renee and Kristin of Utica; two stepbrothers, John Kubecka and wife, Anna, of Mohawk, and Jerry Kubecka of Long Island; and in-laws, Sam and Leo Sadlon.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, at 2 p.m. from the Enea Funeral Home, 24 W. Monroe St., Little Falls with the Rev. Ann Wicks officiating.
Family and friends may call at the Enea Funeral Home on Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, from 1 p.m. until the time of funeral service. Interment will be in Holy Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, East Monroe Street Ext., Little Falls.
Larry Edward Holbrook
HENSONVILLE — Larry Edward Holbrook, 40, of Hensonville died in Prattsville on Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, as the result of a motorcycle accident.
He was born on Nov. 19, 1957, in Stamford, the son of Harry Peter and Lillian (Quackenbush) Holbrook, of Roundtop.
Larry was employed as an auto mechanic for the Alpine Service Station in Windham while also being an avid motorcycle enthusiast.
His survivors include both of his parents; his wife, Diana Lynn Holbrook of Hensonville; his son, Karl Holbrook of Hensonville; his daughter, Amber Holbrook of Milford; his maternal grandmother, Grace Quackenbush of Milford; his paternal grandmother, Lillian E. Holbrook of Roundtop; his brothers, Harry Holbrook of Milford, and William Holbrook of Roundtop; his sister, Nancy Holbrook of East Greenbush. He was also the stepfather of Wendy, Michelle, Michael and Nathan Holdrige of Hensonville, and the cousin of Melissa Quackenbush of Freehold. He is also survived by many other cousins, nieces and nephews.
Calling hours were held at Decker Funeral Home in Windham on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, from 6 to 9 p.m., with the funeral service held on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, at 10 a.m. at Decker Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Johnson officiating. Interment followed at the Davenport Cemetery, in Davenport.
Donations to the Prattsville Rescue Squad in Prattsville would be greatly appreciated.
William DeShaw
HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. — Bill DeShaw, 76, of Hendersonville, Tenn., died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, at Hendersonville Hospital.
He was born on April 2, 1922 at A.O. Fox Hospital, Oneonta, the son of the predeceased parents Elwin and Myrtha DeShaw.
He was a World War II Army veteran.
On Sept. 29, 1946 he married Eva Batista of Oneonta.
Mr. DeShaw lived in the Oneonta and Sidney area while working in the Bendix Plant, Sidney.
In 1957, he moved his family to Orlando, Fla., where he worked and retired from the Glenn Martin Plant. He and his family also operated a restaurant in Orlando, Fla. until he retired and moved to Hendersonville, Tenn.
He is survived by his wife, Eva of Hendersonville, Tenn.; son, Tom DeShaw and wife, Marion of Florida; daughter, JoAnn Maggart and husband, Red; son, Mark DeShaw and wife, Cathy of Hendersonville, Tenn. Also surviving are a sister, Barbra and her husband, Bob Reynard of Florida; sister, Beverly and her husband, Edward Teleky of Maryland; and brother, Bernie and wife, Tina DeShaw of Bainbridge; and several granchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his son, James DeShaw and sister, Betty DeShaw.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, at the Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 1150 Dickerson Road, Goodlettville, Tenn., 37072.
