Edwin M. Scott
SIDNEY — Edwin M. Scott, 86, of Sidney, passed away Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, at the Skilled Nursing Facility, The Hospital, Sidney.
Edwin was born Dec. 23, 1911, to the late Edwin and Maira Barton Scott in Clarks Summit, Pa.
On Sept. 21, 1941, he married Kathryn Mae Wilbur in Providence, Pa.
Edwin was supervisor at E.C.D. of Bendix, Sidney, until he retired in 1993.
He was a member of the First Congregational Church, Sidney. Edwin was also a member of the Loyal Order of Moose No. 277, Sidney.
Edwin is survived by his wife, Kathryn M. Scott of Sidney; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Edith and Calvin Moore of Cincinnati, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Roanne MacEwan of the First Congregational Church, Sidney, officiating.
Friends may call Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church Memorial Fund or the Sidney Emergency Squad.
Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., Sidney.
Ella W. Wood
PORTLANDVILLE — Mrs. Ella W. Wood, 90, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 16, 1998 at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.
She was born Feb. 22, 1908, in Pittsburgh, Pa., the daughter of Charles and Margaret (Carpentier) Wahl.
On April 12, 1942, she married William G. Wood. He predeceased her in April 1964.
Mrs. Wood received her R.N. degree from Kings County School of Nursing in Brooklyn and her B.S. degree from New York University. She completed courses in communicable diseases at Willard Park Hospital, courses on cancer at Buffalo Cancer Hospital and psychiatric nursing at Bellevue Hospital.
She was staff nurse with the Brooklyn Visiting Association and employed by the New York state Department of Health as staff, supervising nurse and was director of Public Health Nursing in the Middltown district.
Mrs. Wood was a literacy and hospice volunteer in Otsego County.
She is survived by a stepson, Richard Wood of Oneonta, and cousins in Cleveland, Ohio, Buffalo and Indiana.
Contributions in Mrs. Wood's memory may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, Oneonta, or the SPCA in Hyde Park.
Mrs. Wood requested cremation at the Leatherstocking Crematory Inc., Cherry Valley, and funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
Jason L. Lobdell
GILBERTSVILLE — Jason L. Lobdell, 26, Petty Officer 2nd class, E.O. 2, Construction Battalion, United States Navy, died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 1998, as the result of an automobile accident in Florida.
Prior to his enlistment in the U.S. Navy, he had lived in Gilbertsville.
He was born in Sidney, the son of Dorothy Dibble and the late Leon R. Lobdell.
Jason attended school at the Gilbertsville Central School and high school at Morris Central School, graduating with the class of 1990.
He was active in the Boy Scouts and played varsity football and basketball while at high school.
He had been in the U.S. Navy for more than six years and was currently attached to Cecil Field in Altoona, Fla., as a heavy equipment operator with the "C.Bs."
He is survived by his beloved mother, Dorothy Dibble, and his beloved stepfather, Everest Dibble Sr., of Gilbertsville; four brothers, Jeffrey G. Pedersen and his wife, Laurie, of Gilbertsville, Jerry E. Pedersen and his wife, Julie, of Morris, Jon E. Lobdell of Unadilla, and Everest Dibble Jr. and his wife, Patricia, of Gilbertsville; two sisters, Beth Norris and her husband, Jack, of South Haven, Kan., and Joanna Lobdell and her fiance, Ken Ballard, of Morris; a maternal grandmother, Gertrude Hoag of Morris; uncles, Stewart Lobdell of Otego and Richard Hoag of Oneonta; nieces and nephews, Kristy, Justin, Jennifer and Jared Pedersen, Zachery, Jeremy and Tyler Norris, and Gregory Lobdell.
Other special people in Jason's life were Scott Anderson, Julia Stanford and Jeffrey Stanford. Also surviving are several step-nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a brother, Jim Pedersen, and his father, Leon.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, at 1 p.m. in the Gilbertsville Presbyterian Church with the Dr. Donald Boardman officiating. Interment will follow in the Hillington Cemetery in Morris with full military honors.
Calling hours will be from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998 at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.
Amanda Losee
STAMFORD — Amanda Carolyn Losee, 89, of 18 Harper St., Stamford, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.
She was born April 30, 1909, in the town of Roseboom, the daughter of John L. and Anna (McMorris) Gillett.
She was formerly married to Ralph Mickle and then to Ralph Losee, who both predeceased her.
Carolyn had been a Stamford resident for the past 20 years. She previously resided in Albany, Cooperstown and Oneonta. Carolyn's lifelong work was as a nurse's aid in nursing home care and individual home care. She worked at Woodside Hall in Cooperstown for several years. She was a member of the Stamford-Harpersfield Senior Citizens.
Carolyn was a loving mother, grandmother and Aunt Mandy to her many nieces and nephews.
She is survived by a daughter, Josephine Mickle Gage of Stamford; a daughter-in-law, Ella Mi"-ckle of West Winfield; six grandchildren, Carol and Edward Lorgan of Stamford, Dixie and Donald Grant of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., Richard and Judy Gage of Stamford, Patricia and James Pernat of Fly Creek, Ralph "Skip" Mickle of West Winfield, and Cynthia and Timothy Powers of West Winfield; 18 great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two sons, Ralph Mickle Jr. and Francis Mickle; four sisters, Irene Snyder, Mildred Gage, Edith Gage and Hannah Sommers; and a great-granddaughter, Trisha Lorgan.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 West Main St., Stamford, with the Rev. Elliott Oakes, pastor of the Stamford United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Fly Creek Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday between 10 and 11 a.m. prior to the service.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.
Russell L. Hoke
ALAMOGORDO, N.M. — Russell L. Hoke, 74, of Alamogordo, N.M., formerly of South Valley, Rockdale and West Edmeston, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998, at Gerald Champion Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Hoke was born July 9, 1924, in New Berlin. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he transferred to the Army Reserves and National Guard and retired in 1984 as a major. He was a former battery commander of the National Guard. He was employed as an electronics technician supervisor with civil service at the test track at Holloman AFB, from which he retired in 1975.
He was a past state director of the Paisanos Good Sam Club of New Mexico.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Bennie Salazar Hoke of the family home; four daughters, Veronica Lopez of Fremont, Calif., Kathy Neale of Keller, Texas, Shirley Haselby of Alamogordo, N.M., and Diana Rinehart of Arlington, Texas; a son, Bob Sandoval and his wife, Irene, of Las Cruces, N.M.; 19 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Marge Brigham and her husband, Morris, of Cherry Valley; a brother, Donald Hoke and his wife, Sukie, of South Valley; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Lee and Ruth (Sherburne) Hoke, and by three brothers and three sisters.
Pallbearers will be Louis Jarmillo, Dean Anderson, Benny Salazar, Henry Chiles, Jim Rhodes and Craig Hoke. Honorary bearers will be Terry Lopez, Eric Haselby, Robby Neal, Claudy Sandoval, Ed Meyers and Mike Salazar.
Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the Arthritis Foundation.
Margaret Shelton
DAVENPORT — Mrs. Margaret (Peggy) Shelton, 72, of Davenport, entered into rest on Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998.
She was born Feb. 10, 1926, in Tarrytown, the daughter of LeRoy and Mary E. (Nixon) Roberts.
She married Walter Shelton Jr. on Jan. 14, 1945, in North Tarrytown.
Peggy attended school in North Tarrytown. She had worked for Phelps Memorial Hospital in North Tarrytown for 22 years. She was known as "Nana" to all her loved ones.
She was predeceased by her husband, Walter Shelton Jr., known as Pop-Pop.
She is survived by two sons, Bradley of White Plains and Walter Shelton III of Davenport; and three daughters, Carol Shelton of Elmsford, Diane Munroe of Davenport and Francine Shelton of Ossining. One brother, Alfred Roberts, died years earlier.
She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and a host of many nieces and nephews and cousins.
Nana will be dearly missed by all of us and may she and Pop-Pop rest in peace.
Funeral and committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. The Rev. Melvin Farmer, pastor of the River Street Baptist Church, Oneonta, will officiate. Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 10-11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, prior to the service.
Mrs. Shelton will be cremated after the funeral service at the Hillington Crematory in Morris.
Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.
Vera J. Allen
BAINBRIDGE — Vera J. Allen, 91, of Bainbridge died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, in the Nursing Care Facility of The Hospital, Sidney.
She was born, March 13, 1907, in Downing, Wis., the daughter of Ole and Ingrid Nelson.
She was married to Leo R. Allen, June 23, 1928, in Harpursville. Mr. Allen died May 5, 1985.
Mrs. Allen was a graduate of the Scientific School of Beauty Culture of Binghamton and for many years was a resident of the village of Bainbridge, where she owned and operated a beauty shop.
She was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Bainbridge.
She is survived by a son-in-law, Raymond F. Selleck of Unadilla; four granddaughters, Raylene Hackett of Afton, Jacqlene Rose of Sidney, Michele Pomeroy of Oneida, and Brenda Brunner of Unadilla; also eight great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Joyce A. Selleck, in 1982.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla with the Rev. Thomas Margrave, vicar of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Bainbridge, officiating.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Peace Plantation, Walton.
Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.
Rose E. DeMott
DAVENPORT — Rose E. DeMott, 68, of Davenport died suddenly on Friday, Sept. 18, 1998, at the Veterans Hospital in Albany.
She was born on Dec. 13, 1929, in Rockville Center, the daughter of Charles and Lillian (Johnson) Fredericks.
Rose moved to Davenport 10 years ago from Seaford. She was involved with the Green Thumb program and was employed by Hartwick College and Hanford Mills. She helped the Elm Park Church with its senior meal program. Rose also volunteered at the Davenport United Methodist Church's Thrift Shop, where she was a member.
She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Barry and ShawNee DeMott of North Ogden, Utah, Larry DeMott of Lindenhurst, and Lisa and Wayne Hoffman of East Meredith; her siblings and their spouses, Edward and Marilyn Fredericks of Arizona, Charles and Juanita Fredericks of Florida, John and Shirley Fredericks of Long Island, Barbara Rodriguez of Davenport, Stanley and Lorraine Fredericks of Colorado, and Bruce and Denise Fredericks of New Bern, N.C.; her grandchildren, Laramie Gene and Connie DeMott, and Keith and Jessica Hoffman; her two great-grandchildren, Polson and Dillon DeMott, and her very special friend, Carl Osterhoudt of Oneonta. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Rose was predeceased by one brother, Richard Fredericks.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. today at the Davenport United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Judy Humphrey-Fox, pastor, officiating.
There will be no calling hours.

Catherine E. Harder
DELHI — Catherine E. Harder, 88, a longtime Delhi and Treadwell resident, died Friday evening, Sept. 18, 1998 at Margaretville Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.
She was born June 10, 1910, in Mount Kisco, Westchester County, the daughter of Alan and Olive (Potter) Brown.
She spent her early life in Bloomingdale, Essex County, later moving to Delhi, where she married Maurice W. Harder on Aug 31, 1940, in St. John's Episcopal Church. Mr. Harder died Dec. 2, 1983.
Catherine was a 60-year area resident, living in Delhi and later in Treadwell. In 1983, she returned to Delhi, where she made her home with her son and his family on Scotch Mountain until becoming a resident of Mountainside Residential Care Center in Margaretville three years ago.
A homemaker most of her life, she was a communicant of St. John's Episcopal Church in Delhi.
Survivors are a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Joseph Hrouda of Hopewell Junction; two sons and their wives, Alan and Cindy Harder of Delhi and Clyde and Joanne Harder of Walton; a daughter-in-law, Sue Harder of Cleaveland, Texas; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, William Harder, a great-grandson, a sister and two brothers.
Friends are invited to call at their convenience at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi where the family will be in attendance today after 1 p.m. and services will be conducted at 2 p.m., by the Rev. Father Paul Hartt, rector of St. John's Church, with cremation and private burial later.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
Arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.
