Jonathon Umbach
OXFORD — Jonathon Scott Umbach, 3-months-old, of 128 Lewis Rd., Oxford, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich.
He was born on May 28, 1998, in Sidney the son of Jeffrey and Ginger (Lewis) Umbach.
Besides his parents, Jeffrey and Ginger of Oxford, he is survived by his sister, Mickayla Umbach of Oxford; his maternal grandparents, John and Bonnie (Ryan) Lewis of Oxford; his paternal grandparents, Victor H. and Margaret `Peggy' (Holmes) Umbach of Oneonta; his great-grandfathers, Burton Miller of Oneonta, and Garland Ryan of Unadilla; his aunts and uncles, Garland Lewis of Oxford, Karen and Micheal Lewis of Sidney, Kevin Umbach of Oneonta, and Heather Umbach of Oneonta; several great-aunts, great-uncles and cousins also survive.
Funeral services for Jonathon will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12, 1998, at 2 p.m. from the Behe Funeral Home, 21 Main St., Oxford.
Friends may call at the Behe Funeral Home, Oxford on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Lorence E. Moore
LAKEVILLE, Conn. — Lorence E. Moore, 82, of Woodland Drive died on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, in Berkshire Medical Center, Pittsfield, Mass.
He was born on Feb. 5, 1916, in Albany, a son of the late Winthrop H. and Florence Greenman Moore.
Lorence was raised and educated in Richfield Springs grade school, then went on to New Hampton Prep School and Weslyan University in Middletown, Conn.
On May 28, 1938, he married Elsi Lupia in the Saint John's Episcopal Church Rectory, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Allen Brown rector officiating.
An honorably discharged United States Army veteran he served our country during World War II.
For over 35 years he was an advertising executive. He first started with O.E. McIntyre in 1947, where he had the distinction of being the company's first employee and after 25 years became senior vice president of the firm. He later became associated with John Luge and Metromedia in New York City, retiring in 1978.
Mr. Moore's relaxation time was spent golfing and was a member of Wyantenuck Country Club in Great Barrington, Mass. He was of the Episcopal faith.
Surviving him besides his loving wife of 60 years Elsie, are two sons, Lorence E. and his wife, Donna Moore of Lenox, Mass., and Francis Moore of Boulder Creek, Calif.; one daughter, Laurel Moore of New York City; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Greenman and Winthrop Moore and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held on Thursday in Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. John Wilde, pastor of the Church of Christ Uniting, officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.
Esther Maine
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Esther Maine, 72, of 1004 Millers Mills Rd., Richfield Springs, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998.
She was born Aug. 21, 1926, in Cooperstown, the daughter of the late Arthur and Jenny Proctor Mallette.
She was a graduate of the Springfield Center Schools and on April 20, 1946, she married Lyle H. Maine.
Mrs. Maine along with her husband operated the family farm for over 50 years, she was also an avid gardener.
Mrs. Maine is survived by her husband, Lyle; four sons and a daughter-in-law, Clifford Maine of Utica, Edward Maine of West Winfield, Thomas and Pamala Maine of Ilion, and Douglas Maine of Richfield Springs; three daughters and sons-in-law, David and Shirley Drake of Litchfield, Keith and Barbara Dye of Ilion and Robert and Betty Phetterplace of Cooperstown; one brother, Gordon Mallette of Attica; two sisters, Anne Guyer of Mohawk and Agnes Guyer of Ilion; a sister-in-law, Beverly Mallette of Morris; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Earl Mallette and a grandson, Clifford Maine Jr.
Funeral services for Mrs. Maine will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12, 1998, at 10:30 a.m. from the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, Ilion with the Rev. Robert Andeas officiating.
Interment will be in the Springfield Center Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Irene Harrison
COBLESKILL — Mrs. Irene L. Harrison, 71, of Hammerstone Village died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, at her home following a long illness.
Mrs. Harrison was born at the Ferris Camp in Middleburgh on Oct. 2, 1926, a daughter of Claude W. and Louise Belle Loucks Ferris.
She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Cobleskill, and a former member of the Atonement Lutheran Church in Oneonta. She also attended the Weslyan Methodist Church in Oneonta, and the Pilgrim Holiness Church in Middleburgh.
She performed volunteer work at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, was active in Christian Ministry and was interested in the history of Schoharie County.
Surviving Mrs. Harrison are her husband, Robert A. Harrison, who she married on April 16, 1949; three sons, the Rev. Mark A. Harrison of Cape Coral, Fla., Lance Harrison of Oneonta, and Bret R. Harrison of Cobleskill; sister, Dolores Greenhalgh of Middleburgh; four grandsons, Matthew Harrison, Brian Harrison, Joel Harrison and Aaron Harrison; and one granddaughter, Jennifer Beth Harrison.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, 1998, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Main Street, Cobleskill with the Rev. Mark A. Harrison and the Rev. John Seltzer officiating.
Burial will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.
There are no calling hours.

Matilda Friedman
DENVER — Matilda Friedman, 73, of Denver died at her home on Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998.
She was born Sept. 16, 1924, in Linden, N.J. the daughter of Abraham and Rebecca Chernotsky.
Before her retirement in 1988, she had been a teacher of special education in Old Bridge, N.J. Upon moving to Delaware County she became a member of the Writers in the Mountains (Roxbury).
She was a graduate of the University of Michigan and Kean College.
Surviving is her husband of 47 years, Nathan; a son, Henry of Bethesda, Md.; a daughter, Heidi of Woodstock; and two granchildren.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville. Burial will follow at B'Nai Israel Cemetery, Fleischmanns.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice.
Wendy Battelle
ONEONTA — Wendy Battelle, 38, of 9 Oneida St., Oneonta, died on Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, at home with her family after a long, courageous battle with cystic fibrosis. She was a resident of Oneonta for a total of eight years beginning in 1980 and had lived in Tucson, Ariz., between 1982 and 1992.
Wendy was born Oct. 2, 1959, in White Plains, to Jane Battell Bush and the late Thomas Ruane. She was raised in Hawthorne and Stony Point and graduated from North Rockland High School.
Wendy worked as a medical transcriptionist at The Hospital in Sidney and at Fox Hospital in Oneonta whenever her health allowed. She was an accomplished violinist, whose vibrant personality and perseverance was an inspiration to all who knew her.
Wendy is survived by her close companion, Dave Daly of Oneonta; her mother, Jane Bush of Stony Point; sisters, Lynne Ingraham of Oneonta and Elizabeth Gertz of Hawthorne; a brother, Chris Keenan of Clinton Corners; and many nieces and nephews, and also by her cherished pets.
As a lung recipient, Wendy was keenly interested in furthering opportunities for all those in need of life-giving organs and hoped everyone will give a serious thought to organ donation. It is in this spirit of hope that, at Wendy's request, her remains have been made an anatomical gift for research to conquer diseases such as cystic fibrosis.
A memorial service led by Rev. Bill Bouton will be held Sunday, Sept. 13, at 3 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, Chestnut Street, Oneonta.
Memorial donations in Wendy's name may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 110 Marlborough Road, Syracuse, N.Y. 13206-2826.
Verner A. MacRabie
FRANKLIN — Verner Aldon MacRabie, 86, died Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Priscilla and Steven Pickwick, where he had been living.
He was born July 27, 1912, in Bethel, the son of Aldon R. and Ethel (Bovee) MacRabie.
He married Ida M. Randell on Aug. 29, 1938, in East Stroudsburg, Pa.
Verner was truly a self-made man. His early years were spent on the family farm, which is now known as Woodstock. Although only able to obtain a sixth-grade education, he learned and worked the family trade of carpentry until he became fascinated with radio repair. He received his diploma from the National Radio Institute, Washington, D.C., on Aug. 13, 1934.
After his marriage and move to Franklin, he opened MacRabie's Radio and T.V. Shop. He was the pioneer in radio and television in this area. Considered an expert, he repaired sets shipped to him from all across the United States. In later years, he also worked as a skilled cabinet maker.
Verner balanced his work along with keeping a small farm to support the family needs. He refused the use of modern equipment and did all the haying and milking by hand. He was a bee keeper for many years. He had a passion for reading for self-education and acquired a vast wealth of knowledge, particularly in science. During his retirement, he built beautiful, hand-carved musical instruments even though he had no musical training to play them. He was a member of the Plymouth Church.
He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Ida M. MacRabie, in Feburary of 1998; a brother, Robert MacRabie; a daughter, Mary E. MacRabie; and a son, Randell C. MacRabie.
Survivors include five daughters, Priscilla and her husband Steven R. Pickwick of Franklin, Ruth and her husband Gary Arnold of Schenevus, Barbra and her husband Richard Groat of Sidney Center, Corinna Atwood of Herkimer and Patricia Kirk of Schenectady. He is also survived by five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Helena and Richard Brown of Wingdale, Hilda Shaver of Warsaw, Va., Hope and Alfred Brown of Farnham, Va., Pearl and Larry Lilly of Derby, Conn. and Ethel (Peg) Odendahl of Mocksville, N.C. Other survivors include several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He had a special place in his heart for Patrick T. Darling of Otego.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, Sept. 14, at 1 p.m. at the Ouleout Cemetery, Franklin.
Officiating clergy will be the Rev. Delbert Ripley.
Arrangements are by Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Chapel, Hancock.
Marion R. Roe
SHARON SPRINGS — Mrs. Marion R. Roe, 73, of Sakon Road, died Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, at Albany Medical Center, following a short illness.
Mrs. Roe was born July 22, 1925, in Yorktown Heights, the daughter of Claude and Nina (Strobeck) Stevens.
Mrs. Roe lived in Schenevus during her childhood years and had resided in Goshen for 30 years before moving to Sharon Springs in 1987. While living in Goshen, she was a food processor at Mac Brothers for several years and then worked for the Bank of New York in Middletown for the clerical department.
She was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include her husband, Harry Roe Jr., whom she married Dec. 26, 1942; three daughters, Harriett Hinton of Howes Cave, Frances Wetherwax of Guilderland, and Phyllis Zeh of Phoenix, Ariz.; three sons, James Harry Roe of Clearwater, Fla., Gary Roe of Sharon Springs, and David Roe of Goshen; one sister, Audrey McCann of Valley Stream, L.I.; one brother, Francis "Pete" Stevens of Schenevus; 14 grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.
A funeral service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 68 Elm St., Cobleskill. Officiating will be Rev. David Handy of the Cobleskill United Methodist Church.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 5:30-6:30 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be private in the Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.

John R. Miller
DELHI — John R. Miller, 71, of Delmar, a former Delhi resident, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998 at his home after a brief illness.
He was born Dec. 6, 1926, in Walton, the son of Maurice and Irene (Rose) Miller.
John grew up in Delhi and was a 1943 graduate of Delaware Academy. A World War II veteran, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific Theater.
In 1951, he married Elizabeth "Betty" Grout, also of Delhi.
After graduating from Clarkson College in 1953, he was employed by Price Waterhouse & Co. and Hopeman Brothers Inc. in New York City.
He subsequently moved with his family to Delmar in 1964 and was employed by W.M. Whitney & Co. and Bankers Trust/First American Bank, Albany until his retirement as vice-president in 1989.
John was an avid gardener and stamp collector and spent many hours researching his family tree.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Betty Miller at home; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Michael of Honeoye, Brian and Kathy of Herndon, Va. and Edward and Tali Miller of Gaithersburg, Md.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Kathy Boltz of Delmar and Pamela and Charles Adams of Mechanicville; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Patricia Miller of Lexington, Va.; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to call after 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, when the family will be in attendance at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi and funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. with burial following in the Woodland Cemetery.
