Marian L. Berube
SOUTH NEW BERLIN — Marian L. Berube, 64, long time resident of South New Berlin, and well-known antique dealer, passed away on Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, at her home in South New Berlin.

Born in Sidney, Marian grew up in the Mount Upton and South New Berlin areas and had attended the Mount Upton school system. Following her education she went to work for Keith Clark of Sidney and subsequently worked for Bendix Corp. of Sidney for a period of eight years.

After her marriage, Marian and her husband traveled around the country before settling in South New Berlin.

Upon returning to South New Berlin, she became an avid collector of antiques and along with her husband, Rene, ran their antique shop in Rockdale for a period of 20 years.

One of Marian's special enjoyments was that of helping others. She found great comfort in knowing that she had helped someone.

She was born March 12, 1934, in Sidney, she was the daughter of Arthur and Georgianous (Camp) Leech.

On Nov. 4, 1963, in  Pennsylvania, she married Rene Berube, who survives.

Besides her husband, Rene of South New Berlin, she is survived by her daughter, Vicki Barrows and her husband, David, of North Norwich; two sons, Thomas Hoag and his wife, Sandy, of Guilford, and Rodney Hoag and his wife, Sharlene, of Rockdale; one sister, Jaunita Nichols of South New Berlin; four brothers, Art Leech of South New Berlin, Ed Leech and his wife, Joan, of Mount Upton, Jim Leech of Garrattsville, and Bill Leech and his wife, Janet, of South New Berlin; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a sister, Alma Bresee, and a brother, Alan Leech.

Graveside services for Marian will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, at 4 p.m. from the Butternuts Valley Cemetery, Copes Corners, with Pastor Romeyn Kipp, pastor of the Holmesville Baptist Church officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are by the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home of Norwich.

Mary Ellen Evans
RICHMONDVILLE — Mary Ellen Evans, 62, of Robert Street, Richmondville, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998, at her home after a brief illness.

She was born on Aug. 4, 1936, in Tupper Lake, the daughter of Frank A. and Sylvia Sterling Kissel.

She was a resident of Schoharie County for 30 years.

She was a graduate of the State University College at Oswego.

She had taught early grades in the Cobleskill Central School for 30 years before retiring in 1992.

She was a member of the Richmondville American Legion Auxiliary and Cobleskill Lodge No. 2040, B.P.O.E. Auxiliary for 26 years. She had served as publicity chairperson for the Elk Auxiliary for six years. She was a Past President and president of the Past Presidents.

She married Ransom A. Evans. He died Dec. 10, 1997.

She is survived by an aunt, Victoria Kissel of New York, and also by several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, Sept. 4, 1998, at 11 a.m. at St. Vincent De Paul Church,  Washington Heights, Cobleskill, with the Rev. Edward Golding officiating.

Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester.

Calling hours will be on Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Cobleskill Elks Lodge, Legion Drive, Cobleskill during which, Legion and Elk services will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hope Lodge, 7 Oak St., Worcester, Mass.; the Schoharie County Animal Shelter, Howes Cave; or the Catskill Area Hospice, Mac Arthur Avenue, Cobleskill.

Funeral arrangements are by Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home, Cobleskill.

Michelina Chicorelli
ONEONTA — Michelina Chicorelli, 91, of Oneonta died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

Mrs. Chicorelli was born Nov. 26, 1906, in Alvignano, Caserta, Italy, the daughter of Peter and Lucrezia (Tommaselli) DeLise.

She married Anthony Chicorelli on Feb. 7, 1929, in Alvignano, Caserta, Italy. He died on Oct. 11, 1990.

A local resident since 1929, Mrs. Chicorelli was a member of St. Mary's Church and its Rosary Society.

She is survived by her children, Anthony Victor Chicorelli and Lucrezia Chicorelli Lettis, both of Oneonta; a sister, Anna DeLise of Alvignano, Caserta, Italy; and a brother, Joseph DeLise of West Haven, Conn. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, and one cousin.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Emmons.

Friends may call on Wednesday at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. at which time the family will be in attendance.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Claude Judd
ONEONTA — Claude Judd, 88, of Oneonta died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

He was born Aug. 29, 1910, the son of Riley Judd and Estella English.

Mr. Judd worked for the D & H Railroad for 40 years. He then went to work at Homer Folks as a steam fireman, retiring 13 years later.

He is survived by his wife, Lois; a son and his wife, Stephen and Vicki; three grandchildren, Samuel, Michael and Shelly; and five great-grandchildren.

There will be no calling hours and interment of the cremains will be at the convenience of the family.

Katherine E. Bixby
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Katherine E. Bixby, 89, formerly of 6 Gould St., died on Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, in The Meadows, town of Middlefield.

She was born on Feb. 9, 1909 in New York City, the daughter of the late Louis and Mary  Johnson Bixby.

A lifelong area resident she was educated in Burlington Flats.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Burlington Flats.

Graveside services will take place on Friday, at 2 p.m. in the Burlington Flats Cemetery, with the Rev. Jay Henderson, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Burlington officiating.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Jay Carpenter
BAINBRIDGE — Jay Carpenter, 17, of Bainbridge died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, at The Hospital, Sidney.

Jay was born Oct. 22, 1980, to Rick and Susan Saunders Carpenter, in Sidney.

He was junior at Bainbridge-Guilford-Afton High School and was looking forward to studying welding at BOCES this fall.

Jay worked at Tucek Farms, Bainbridge. Jay enjoyed farming and anything to do with cows. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing.

Jay "Bubba" is survived by his father, Rick Carpenter of Bainbridge; his mother, Susan Carpenter of Vestal; his paternal grandparents, Margaret and Floyd Carpenter Sr. of South Haven, Mich.; his maternal grandmother and step-grandfather, Eleanor and George Townsend of Bainbridge; his brothers, Webb Carpenter and his fiance, Carrie Bowgren, and his son, Keegan Carpenter, of Vestal, and Glenn Carpenter of Bainbridge; his uncles, Floyd Carpenter Jr. of South Haven, Mich., James Carpenter of Jacksonville, N.C., Ed Saunders of Unadilla, and John Freelove of Allegany, Mich.; his aunts, Barb Carpenter of Allegany, Mich., and Linda Saunders of Binghamton; and several great-aunts and uncles, cousins and many friends.

Jay is predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Glenn Saunders, and his aunt, Linda Freelove.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Sept. 7, 1998, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Wayne Burnett, United Methodist Church, in Afton officiating.

Friends may call Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

Leon Fritts Jr.
COOPERSTOWN — Leon Fritts Jr., 74, of 144 county Highway 26, died Sept. 2, 1998.

He was born in Morris, the son of Leon and Hazel (Tilley) Fritts.

He attended Morris schools.

On Oct. 17, 1943, he was married to Marion E. Turner.

Mr. Fritts worked as a carpenter for Phillips Construction and subsequently for David Bassler Construction.

He is survived by his wife, Marion; one son, Stephen and his wife, Dorothy of Cooperstown; his brothers, Robert Fritts of Florida, Frederick Fritts of Oneonta, Gerald Fritts of Georgia, Charles Fritts of Cooperstown, Irwin Fritts of Cooperstown, Allen Fritts of Otego; his sisters, Clemma Turner of Fly Creek, Joyce Fritts of Rochester; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Carl Fritts, Ralph Fritts and James Fritts; and his sister, Claire Fritts.

There will be a graveside service held at the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery on Saturday at 2 o'clock in the afternoon.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cooperstown Emergency Squad at Box 1, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Arrangements entrusted to the Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

John P. Skramko
SPRINGFIELD — John P. Skramko, 68, of State Highway 80, died on Friday, Sept. 4, 1998, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

He was born on May 7, 1930, in Columbia Center, a son of the late Alex and Anna Mislanik Skramko.

He was raised and educated in West Winfield and attended Richfield Springs High School.

A U.S. Army veteran, John began his Army career with the 82nd Airborne Division. John served in the Korean Conflict with the 101st Airborne Division and retired from military service after 20 years in 1968 with the rank of staff sergeant.

On May 1, 1951, he married Madaline Stickles in St. Mary's Ukranian Orthodox Church in Herkimer. Much of their married life was spent with the military in Europe. They have resided in the town of Springfield since 1968.

For 15 years he worked as a gun assembler for the Remington Arms Company in Ilion, retiring in 1983.

His life had been devoted to the American Legion. A life member of American Legion Post No. 616, Richfield Springs, he had served four terms as commander, he was manager of the Richfield Springs Vets Club, a former past commander of Otsego County American Legion, past Chef DeGare of the Herkimer 40 & 8 and the Otsego 40 & 8. He was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Church in Springfield Center.

Surviving beside his loving wife of 47 years, Madaline, are a son, John P. and his wife Donna Skramko of Garden City, L.I.; two daughters, Cheri Hopper of Sprout Brook and Lori Fox of Hartwick; four brothers, Steve Skramko of Richfield Springs, Charles Skramko of Ilion, Nicholas Skramko of San Clemente,  Calif., and Daniel Skramko of Eaton; three sisters, Mary Zawko and Sophie Kleben, both of Richfield Springs and Wanda  Taylor of West Winfield; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Michael Skramko.

Funeral from J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 5 W. James St., Richfield Springs on Tuesday will be at 9:15 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow in Blessed Sacrament Church, Springfield Center at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Santino Titta, pastor, officiating.

Interment will follow in Springfield Center Cemetery with full military honors being accorded.

Calling hours will be Monday from 2-4 amd 7-9 p.m. Members of American Legion Post No. 616, Richfield Springs, are asked to meet at the funeral home at 8 p.m. Monday for services.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

Richard Silvernail
JEFFERSON — Richard Charles (Dick, Doc) Silvernail, 62, of  Jefferson died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown after a short illness.

He was born May 13, 1936, in Schenevus, the son of Fred and Hazel (Hallock) Silvernail.

Dick was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving from 1955-1958.

Dick was a lifelong area resident. He grew up in Worcester and was a 1955 graduate of Worcester Central School. In 1962, he moved to  Jefferson.

He was employed for many years at the Summit Shock Treatment Facility in Summit as a shop vocational instructor, retiring in 1995. He was a self-employed contractor for many years.

Dick was a member of the  Jefferson United Methodist Church and was on the church Board of Trustees. He was an avid sportsman.

Dick is survived by his former wife, Arline (Beagle) Silvernail of Schenectady, whom he married on Dec. 10, 1955, at the Worcester United Methodist Church, and their daughter, Sharon Brown and her two sons, Michael and Kyle Brown of Schenectady. He then married Elaine (Golomb) Silvernail of Coshocton, Ohio, on June 15, 1996, in Croton, Ohio; also surviving is his mother, Hazel Silvernail of Worcester; a brother, Earle Silvernail of Sharon Springs; a sister, Carolyn Basola of Worcester; one niece, one great-niece, two great-nephews and many loving and devoted friends.

He was predeceased by his father five years ago.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 7, 1998, at the  Jefferson United Methodist Church.

Pastor Charles Gockel and the Rev. Elliott Oakes, pastor of the Stamford and Harpersfield United Methodist Churches, will be officiating.

Burial will follow at the West  Jefferson Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 115 Main St., Worcester.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in memory of Dick to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820 or the  Jefferson Rescue Squad or Fire Department, P.O. Box 10,  Jefferson, N.Y. 12093.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.
