Grace W. Menhinick
EAST MEREDITH — Mrs. Grace W. Menhinick, 63, went home to be with her Lord and savior Jesus Christ, Friday, Aug. 28, 1998, at her residence.

She was born March 31, 1935, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Charles and Grace (Lubrano) Sudano.

She married Walter J. Menhinick on Jan. 7, 1956, in Brooklyn.

Grace was a very devoted and faithful member of the Community Gospel Church of Oneonta. Prior to her illness, she enjoyed welcoming people into her home for fellowship and sharing the good news of Jesus Christ.

She is survived by her husband, Walter J. Menhinick of East Meredith; her mother and stepfather, Grace and Wilbur Byman of Deer Park, L.I.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Frances and Wayne Shepard of DeLancey, and Suzanne and John Janitz of Mount Vision; two sons, Gary Menhinick of East Meredith, and Walter J. "Jamie" Menhinick Jr. of East Meredith; grandchildren, Melissa and Jason Young of Juneau, Alaska, Miranda Rose Menhinick of East Meredith, and John Paul Janitz Jr. of Mount Vision; two sisters, Marie Caliendo of Lindenhurst, L.I., and Annette Rao of Las Vegas, Nev.; one brother, Charles Sudano of Lindenhurst, L.I.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, at 11 a.m. at the Community Gospel Church, 33 Grove St., Oneonta.

The Rev. Donald Yarborough, pastor of the Community Gospel Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the East Meredith Cemetery, East Meredith.

The family will be present at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta on Sunday, Aug. 30 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. for those who wish to call.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Community Gospel Christian School, 33 Grove St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820, in loving memory of Grace W. Menhinick.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

Freda McHale
SCHENEVUS — Freda McHale, 67, of Schenevus died Thursday, Aug. 27, 1998, at M.I. Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born Feb. 11, 1931, in Darby, England, the daughter of Fred and Florence (Jackson) Marello.

She married Richard J. McHale on Sept. 13, 1986.

Mrs. McHale moved to Schenevus one year ago from DeLancey, where she and her husband lived for four years. They were previously from New York City.

Mrs. McHale was a nurse at a children's hospital in Darby, England. Most recently, she was a medical secretary at a physicians' office in New York City.

She is survived by her husband, Richard J. McHale of Schenevus; her mother, Florence Marello of England; two brothers, Dennis and Gordon Marello of England; a sister, Vinny Marello of England; and many nieces and nephews.

At Mrs. McHale's request, she was cremated and a memorial graveside service will be held a the Elk Creek Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, 1998.

The Rev. Bonnie McGraw, pastor of Schenevus United Methodist Church will officiate.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in memory of Mrs. McHale to the American Cancer Society, Southern District Office, 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905-4704.

Funeral arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Hilda Mary (Card) Stilwell
ONEONTA — Hilda Mary (Card) Stilwell, 75, of Oneonta died unexpectedly Aug. 27, 1998, at M.I. Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

She was born Oct. 23, 1922, in the town of Butternuts, the daughter of Russell William and Hazel Beth (Holbrook) Card.

She was a housewife and a lifelong area resident having previously lived in West Oneonta.

She is survived by three daughters, Diana DeYoung of Marathon, Donna Logan of Kirkwood, and Neatta Companie of Oneonta; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; three brothers, Luther Card of Morris, Gerald Card and his wife Gertrude of West Oneonta, and Garieth Card of West Oneonta; one sister, Joyce Ploutz of Otego; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.

She was predeceased by one son, Dennis Stilwell, and a daughter, Gail Stilwell.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta with the Rev. Mel Farmer, pastor of River Street Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Cook Cemetery, West Oneonta.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. Sunday when the family will be in attendance or prior to the service time on Monday.

Those who wish may make contributions to the Laurens Emergency Squad, Laurens.

Ethel A. Bennett
ONEONTA — Ethel A. Bennett, 87, of Oneonta died Saturday, Aug. 29, 1998, at the Countryside Care Center in Delhi, where she has been a resident since last April.

She was born Jan. 14, 1911, in Verona, the daughter of William and Elizabeth  White.

She married Stuart H. "Pete" Bennett on Jan. 6, 1938, in  White Plains. He died on March 30, 1995.

A homemaker, Mrs. Bennett enjoyed playing cards, and took pleasure in her garden.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. William (Joyce) Holland of Meridale and Mrs. Michael (Diane) Wolfhard of Greenville, S.C.; a sister, Mrs. Walter (Pearl) Roser of Taberg; five grandchildren, and several nieces and one nephew.

She was predeceased by her son, Paul Bennett, on April 5, 1998.

It was Mrs. Bennett's request to be cremated and her ashes interred in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours, and it is requested that memorial contributions be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Louise W. Ellis
SIDNEY — Louise W. Ellis, 91, passed away Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, at The Hospital, Sidney.

She was born on Sept. 3, 1906, to the late John and Louise Rogers Walker in Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Louise married Benjamin Ellis on June 3, 1930. Ben predeceased her on April 10, 1978.

Louise was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sidney since 1914.

Louise is survived by two daughters and son-in-laws, Janet and Charles Flyzik of West Newfield, Maine and Margaret and William Aubrey of Mayfield; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Emily Walker of Norwich; seven grandchildren, three great-grandsons and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. David D. Masland of the United Methodist Church in Sidney officiating.

Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church memorial fund.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

Dorothy A. Hull
EDMESTON — Dorothy A. Hull, 97, of Edmeston died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, at The Meadows.

She was born July 5, 1901, in New Lisbon, the daughter of John F. and Bessie (Tyler) Bundy.

She was a graduate of Morris Central School, and served Otsego County as a teacher in many of the one-room school houses throughout this region for many years.

Dorothy was a homemaker who enjoyed crocheting and crossword puzzles. A special highlight in her life was attending her 80th Alumni Banquet this past June in Morris.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Betty and LeRoy Polling of Palm Bay, Fla., Barbara and Vernon Bunn of Utica, and Donald and Doris Hull of Garrattsville; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and her sister, Geraldine Bundy of Otego.

She was predeceased by her son, Gerald Hull, and a grandson, Thomas Bunn.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, at 1 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston with the Rev. Bill Lyon officiating.

Interment will follow at Edmeston Union Cemetery.

Calling hours are Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998, from 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dorothy's memory to the Edmeston Emergency Squad; envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

William F. (Sonny) Sutton Jr.
MARYLAND — William F. (Sonny) Sutton Jr., 70, of Maryland died Saturday, Aug. 29, 1998, at his residence after a lengthy illness.

He was born April 6, 1928, in Maryland, the son of William F. Sr. and Minnie (Livingston) Sutton.

He married Edith M. Bates on July 17, 1948 in Westville.

Sonny was a United States Navy veteran serving from 1946 to 1948.

He was employed for more than 20 years at Reinhardt Home Heating in West Oneonta as the service manager, retiring in 1990.

He was a lifelong area resident.

Sonny was a Maryland Town Board councilman for 10 years and a member of the Schenevus United Methodist Church, Worcester American Legion Post 1584, and a former member of the Schenevus Valley Masonic Lodge No. 592.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and attending all of his grandsons' sports events.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Edith M. Sutton of Maryland; his daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Gary Allen of Schenevus; his son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Lorraine Sutton of Milford; five grandchildren, James and Jonathan Allen and Loren, William and Brian Sutton; three brothers, Edward Sutton of Greene, Robert Sutton of Maryland and Donald Sutton of Guilford; two sisters, Marion Walrath of Maryland and Marjorie Vaughan of Wells Bridge and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth Sutton.

A funeral service will take place at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998, at the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus with the Rev. Bonnie McGraw, pastor of the Schenevus Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will follow at the Maryland Cemetery, with full military honors presented by the Worcester American Legion Post 1584.

Calling hours will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Martin N. Thorsland
SARATOGA SPRINGS — Martin N. Thorsland, 57, of Wedgewood Drive died Saturday, Aug. 29, 1998, at Saratoga Hospital.

He was born Sept. 23, 1940, in Cooperstown. He was the son of the late Casper Thorsland and Joyce (Parslow) Thorsland.

Mr. Thorsland was a graduate of Otego High School and served in the United States Navy from 1958-1960. He earned a bachelor's degree in secondary education (biology and physics) in 1964 and a master's degree in physics from the State University College at Oneonta. He earned a master's degree in physics and a doctorate in science education from Cornell University in 1971. Before coming to Empire College, he was assistant professor of education and acting director of the NSF Teacher Centered Project at Brown University.

He was a nationally recognized expert in the assesment of college-level learning. He contributed to the conference, workshops and publications of the Council on Adult and Experiental Learning and served on the National Advisory Board of New York's National Program on Non-Collegiate Sponsored Instruction. He was a consultant to Regents College, Thomas Edison State College.

He was a member of the professional staff of SUNY Empire State College since 1975. He served as director of the Office of Program Review and Assesment from 1968-1991. He held the concurrent academic rank of associate professor of science, mathematics and technology.

He was an avid gardener, an expert in antiques and collectibles, skilled in carpentry and a talented guitarist and songwriter.

Besides his mother, Joyce Thorsland of Otego, he is survived by his wife, of 31 years, Judith Brown Thorsland of Saratoga Springs; two sons, Brett Thorsland of Watkins Glenn, and Derek Thorsland of Alexandria, Va.; a sister, Sonja Davie of Cooperstown; three brothers, Eric Thorsland of Maryland, Michael Thorsland of West Oneonta and Peter Thorsland of Otego, also several nieces and nephews.

A gathering of friends and relatives will be held on Tuesday, at 7 p.m., at The William J. Burke & Sons Funeral Home, 628 North Broadway.

Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Friends may donate in his memory to the charity of one's choice.
