Calvin Slawson
LAKE ARIEL, Pa. — Calvin W. Slawson, 83, of Lake Ariel and formerly of Sidney, passed away Tuesday evening, July 28, 1998, in the Mid-Valley Hospital, Peckville, Pa.

He was born July 12, 1915, in Sidney. Cal was the son of the late William and Edna Seaman Slawson Sr.

On April 14, 1973, he married Harriette Spencer Hayes in Sidney.

Mr. Slawson was a retired toolmaker for the Livingston Wilbur Co., Fanwood, N.J.

He was a former member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Sidney.

Cal was an avid bowler.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Harriette Slawson of Lake Ariel, Pa.; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Dolores and Fran Breunig of Sidney; two stepsons and daughters-in-law, Keith and Carol Hayes of Prince George, Va., and Blake and Mary Seelhorst Hayes of Ypsilanti, Mich.; two nephews, Robert and Gary Slawson; and also seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several cousins.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. today, at the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in his name may be made to the Hospice of St. John's Lackawana Executive Park, Suite 101, 237 Main St., Dickson City, Pa., 18519.

Arrangements are under the direction of the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Robert (Bob) Felton
JEFFERSON — Robert (Bob) Felton, 59, died at home July 29, 1998.

He was born in New York City and was an area resident for 12 years.

Bob is survived by his wife, Bernadette Nee Lee; two daughters, Darlene Falco of Mahopac and Pamela Robustello of the Bronx; a son, Robert Felton Jr. of the Bronx; two sisters, Margaret Starr of Cape May, N.J., and Carol Heinfling of Orlando, Fla., and two grandchildren, Vincent and Victoria Robustello.

Friends may call today between the hours of 2 and 4 p.m. and 7 and 9 p.m. at the Wiliam A. Tari Funeral Home, 40 Main St., (corner of Liberty) Stamford.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Stamford at 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998.

Committal service will be private.

Funeral arrangements are by the William A. Tari Funeral Home, Stamford.

Edward J. Scott
SARATOGA SPRINGS — Edward J. Scott of Fox Hound Run, died Friday, July 17, 1998, at the Saratoga Hospital. He was 74.

Born on March 26, 1924, in Davenport, he was the son of the late Floyd and Bertha (Pierce) Scott.

Ed was an Air Force veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a New York State Thruway Authority Supervisor for 22 years, retiring in 1990.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Saratoga Springs and loved golf and woodworking.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Myrtle "Jill" (Kilian) Scott of Saratoga Springs; a daughter, Terrayne Stortz of Gansevort; a son-in-law, Lawrence F. Stortz; one brother, Lorin Scott of Colonie; three grandchildren, Kimberly, Jeffery M. and Meghan L. Stortz; one great-grandchild, Adam M. Stortz, and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to St. Paul's Lutheran Church Debt Service Fund, 149 Lake Ave., Saratoga Springs, N.Y., 12866.

Samuel S. Zummo
ONEONTA — Samuel S. Zummo, 63, of Oneonta died Friday, July 31, 1998, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born on Feb, 9, 1935, in Oneonta, the son of Casimiro Jack and Catherina (DiMatteo) Zummo.
He married Mary A. Rochford in Oneonta on Oct. 21, 1956.

Mr. Zummo attended St. Mary's School. He graduated from Oneonta High School in 1954 and attained his associate's degree from the Albany Business College in 1956.

He was the incorporator and treasurer of Scotch Valley Ski Center in Stamford. From 1969-1971, he headed the construction of Stiefel Labs in East Durham. Mr. Zummo served as the 5th Ward Alderman from 1976-1982.

He and his wife owned and operated the Washinghouse Company, located on Chestnut Street for 25 years. They also owned and operated the Montgomery Ward Catalog Stor in the 1980s. Since 1988, he and his family have owned and operated the Sears Roebuck Dealer Store in Oneonta.

Although diagnosed with leukemia in 1992, he continued his role in the family business. Because of his long and courageous struggle with leukemia, the Bassett Healthcare staff fondly referred to him as "Miracle Man."

The family would like to thank the staff at Bassett for their long time support and care.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Mary A. Zummo of Oneonta; three children and their spouses, Nancy Zummo and Scott Means of Exeter, N.H., Catherine Zummo and Dr. William McDermott of Pinehurst, N.C., and David J. and Corrine Zummo of Atlanta, Ga.; his grandchildren, Kelly A. Means of Exeter, N.H., David N., Andrew J. and Maria S. Zummo of Iowa City, Iowa, Lauren and Alex McDermott of Pinehurst, N.C.; his siblings andd their spouses, Rosemarie Zummo and John Bratland of Bethesda, Md., Casimiro Jack and Linda Zummo Jr. of Wichita, Kan. and Joseph and Joyce Zummo of Norwich; his uncle, Andrew DiMatteo of Oneonta and aunt, Mrs. Thomas (Nita) Sturiale of Corning; his brother-in-law and his spouse, David S. and Patricia Rochford of Sierra Vista, Ariz. and his niece and nephews, Katherine Kelly and Matthew Bratland and Jason Zummo. Mr. Zummo is also survived by severals cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered in St. Mary's Church on Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Robert Longobuocco, associate pastor, officiating.

A private committal service will be held in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call Sunday evening from 7-9 p.m. at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia Society of America, 733 Third Ave., New York, N.Y. 10017.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Kathryn Mitz Wilson
ORLEANS, Mass. — Kathryn Mitz Wilson, 72, died last Monday after a brief illness.

She was the wife of Dr. Philo C. Wilson, who retired in 1985 after a 20-plus year career of teaching in the SUCO Earth Sciences Department. She was also the mother of Pamela (Wilson) Gunning of Saugerties, Karen (Wilson) Baker (who now owns a bookstore in Wolfeboro, N.H.) and Jack Wilson (who is now Exploration Manager of a small oil company in Tulsa, Okla.) The three children all went through the Oneonta School System and graduated from the high school during the time the family lived there.

Kathryn was born in Great Barrington, Mass., the eldest child of Robert W. and Helen M. Elsden. She was educated in the Westfield, Mass., school system and attended Mary  Washington College in Fredericksburg, Va.

During World War II she worked in the Ordinance Department at Bradley Field and later at Old Colony Paper Company in Westfield. For the past 10 years, she has been a part-time toll gate officer at a local beach in Orleans, where she was widely renowned for her infectious smile. Once an avid bridge player, in recent years she has been an equally ardent crossword puzzle fan.

Besides her husband and children, she leaves a brother in Florida, five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Burial arrangements are private, but friends who wish to make memorial donations in her name either to the Hospice of Cape Cod, 923 Main St., Yarmouthport, Mass., 02675, or the Cancer Center of Cape Cod Hospital, 27 Park St., Hyannis, Mass., 02601.

Harold N. Pinney
UNADILLA — Harold N. Pinney, 85, of county Route 3, Unadilla died Friday, July 31, 1998 at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born, April 9, 1913 in Meredith, the son of Arthur and Maude (Kittle) Pinney.

He was married to Mildred  White June 1, 1939 in Treadwell. Mrs. Pinney died July 14, 1985.

Mr. Pinney was a former resident of Meridale and Treadwell and has been a resident of Unadilla since 1972.

He was a former dairy farmer and lumberman and retired as a union construction employee of Oneonta Local No. 643.

During his retirement years, he was employed part time at Butts Concrete Products in Masonville and Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Unadilla.

He was a member of the Happy Times Senior Citizens of Wells Bridge and the Unadilla Senior Citizens.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and David Gray of Unadilla; two sons and daughters-in-laws, James and Linda Pinney of Unadilla and Henry and Nanette Pinney of Endicott; a brother, Arthur Pinney Jr. of Treadwell; three sisters, Florence Constable of Sidney Center, Almeda Grube of Unadilla and Aileen Jester of East Meredith; also 10 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 5, 1998 at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla with the Rev. R. Michael Amos, pastor of the Fellowship Baptist Church, Unadilla officiating.

Burial will be in Croton Union Cemetery, Treadwell.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home, 112 Main St., Unadilla, Tuesday, Aug. 4 at their convenience.

The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Ernest C. Toften
JEFFERSON — Ernest C. Toften, 82, of Clapper Hollow,  Jefferson died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998 at Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County, Cobleskill.

He was born Sept. 9, 1915 in North Pelham, the son of Emil Olaf and Anna (Gustavius) Toften.

He was married to Maria A. Kenyon on May 21, 1938. Maria died Jan. 6, 1998.

Ernie lived in New Rochelle (Westchester County) for many years, where he was a carpenter by trade. He was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters & Joiners Union of America. He moved to  Jefferson in 1961 where he became self-employed and also worked for several area building contractors.

At one time Ernie was a member of the  Jefferson Fire Department. He loved hunting, trout fishing and taxidermy.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, George A. and Karen Toften of Middleburgh and Ernest P. and Kathy Toften of Delhi; grandchildren, George A. Toften Jr. of Schenectady, Stacey Simeon, Carrie and Garrett Toften of Middleburgh and April and Eric Toften of North Carolina; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Emil and a sister, Ann.

Funeral services wil be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 4 at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 W. Main St., Stamford with the Rev. Joseph Cebula, pastor of the Sacred Heart Roman Camtholic Church in Stamford officiating.

The burial will be held in the Evergreen Cemetery,  Jefferson.

Friends may call at the funeral home this afternoon and evening. The family will be in attendance between 7 and 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Ernie's memory to the  Jefferson Fire Dept.,  Jefferson, N.Y. 12093.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, Grand Gorge.

William C. (Billy) Benson
ONEONTA — William C. (Billy) Benson, 35, of Oneonta died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, unexpectedly at his residence.

He was born on Feb. 11, 1963, in Louisville, Ky., the son of Robert C. and Rosalie Benson.
Mr. Benson was previously a licensed real estate agent for The Benson Agency, and had worked at Medical Coaches, Oneonta. He was currently working at Falco's Restaurant, Colliersville.

Billy was a lifelong area resident and was a devoted and loving father, known for his kind heart and warm smile.

He was a 1981 graduate of Oneonta High School and received an associate degree in Applied Science from Herkimer County Community College in 1984.

He is survived by a daughter, Shanleigh Nicole Benson (3 years old) of Oneonta; his parents, Robert C. and Rosalie Benson of Oneonta; sister and brother-in-law, JoAnn and Mark E. Vosburgh of Hudson, Ohio; brother, Robert C. Benson Jr. of Waukesha, Wis.; sister, Susan L. Kowalczyk of Alexandria, Va.; one nephew, Francis Robert Benson of Waukesha, Wis.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 5, 1998, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta with the Rev. Anthony Chairmonte officiating.

Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Friends may call at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta after 2 p.m., Tuesday. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday evening.

Those who wish may make contributions to The Oneonta Boys and Girls Club, 70 River St., Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Elvira Puhm Ritz
FRANKLIN — Elvira (Vera) Puhm Ritz, 71, of Franklin died on Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta, where she had been a resident since November 1997.

She was born on Oct. 30, 1926, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Franz and Lilly (Ufken) Schmidecke.

She married Joseph Puhm in 1947. He died in 1973. She then married Donald M. Ritz on June 16, 1973, in Franklin.

Vera was a housewife most of her life and became well known for her art work. She was a member of the Community Bible Church of Franklin.

She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Lilly and Robert Mueller of Youcalpa,  Calif.; her husband of 25 years, Donald M. Ritz of Franklin; a daughter and her husband, Rose and James Cleaveland of Franklin; a son, Joseph Puhm of Riverside,  Calif.; her step children and their spouses, Jack and Marjorie Ritz of Franklin, Deborah and Tarry Brienza of Hartwick; a brother and his wife, Frank and Jill Schmiedecke of Prescott, Ariz. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 6, 1998, at 2 p.m. at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Walter Schlundt, pastor of The Community Bible Church, officiating, and the Rev. Andrea  White, pastor of the Aldrich Baptist Church, assisting.

Burial will follow in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

Friends may call Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, at which time the family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin Emergency Squad and Franklin Fire Department.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home.
