Claire May Kanzler
MIDDLEFIELD — Miss Claire May Kanzler, 61, of Middlefield, died Wednesday afternoon, July 15, 1998, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born on Sept. 6, 1936, in Flushing, Queens, a daughter of John and Elizabeth (Dzierqowski) Kanzler.

After moving with her family from Flushing to Middlefield in 1947, Claire went on to graduate from the Cherry Valley High School.

For over 40 years, she worked as a sales clerk at J.J. Newberry's on Main Street in Cooperstown until her retirement in 1995.

Claire was a member of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, the Middlefield Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary and the Roseboom Senior Citizens Group. She was also a former member of the Rebekah Lodge.

She is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy A. and Joseph Konchar of Milford; one brother and sister-in-law, John and Lora Kanzler of Middlefield and several cousins and many friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon on Saturday, July 18, 1998, at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown with the Rev. John R. Roos, pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Index.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Saturday morning from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to the Middlefield Volunteer Fire Department First Responders, in care of Kevin Preston, 3539 County Highway 35, Schenevus, N.Y., 12155.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Raymond R. Cottone
GRAND GORGE — Raymond R. Cottone, 79, of Ferris Hill, Grand Gorge died Wednesday, July 15, 1998, at Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville.

He was born Jan. 29, 1919, in Adrian, W. Va., the son of Rosario and Domenica (Bonjiorno) Cottone.

He was formerly married to Evelyn Crawford.

Ray came to Ferris Hill in Grand Gorge as an infant and lived there and in the surrounding area all of his life.

At one time, he owned and operated a dairy farm. Prior to his retirement, he worked several years for the town of Prattsville Highway Department.

He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen and Frank Warner of Apollo Beach, Fla., Ruth and Frank Pelkey of Windham; a son, Paul Cottone of Oneonta; six grandchildren, Carrie Linde, Marlena, Frank and Sarah Warner, Dana and Heather Cottone; one great-grandson, Joshua Warner; a sister, Louise All of  Jefferson and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, at the Hall Funeral Home, 142 W. Main St., Stamford, with the Rev. Roger Shafer, pastor of the Huntersfield Christian Training Center, officiating.

Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that expressions of sympathy be made in Ray's memory to the Zadock Pratt Museum, 333 Main St., Prattsville, N.Y., 12468.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Marjorie M. More
SARATOGA SPRINGS — Marjorie M. More, 91, of Wesleys Health Care Center, Saratoga Springs, died Wednesday, July 15, 1998, at the Wesleys Health Care Center after a short illness.

She was born Dec. 19, 1906, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Albert M. Mix and M. Grace Beaty.

She was married to Herbert R. More who died in 1981.

She lived in Saratoga Springs since 1983. She previously lived in Oneonta for 41 years where she was a teacher. She taught in the Roxbury School system.

She was a graduate of the New York State University of Albany, where she received her teaching degree.

She was an active volunteer in Roxbury and Saratoga for many groups and was a member of the United Methodist Church of Saratoga.

Survivors are a son, John A. More of Kingston; daughter, Grace Woodward of Kingston, R.I.; five grandsons, two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services are Saturday, July 18, 1998, at 2 p.m. at the Chapel at Wesleys Health Care Center.

There are no calling hours.

She will be cremated at the Gardner of Earl Crematory, Troy.

Burial will take place at a later date in the family lot in Roxbury.

Bernice T. Lyon
WALTON — Bernice T. Lyon, 92, of 84 Griswold St., Walton died Monday, July 13, 1998, at her home.

She was born April 19, 1906, in Walton, the daughter of George S. and Frances D. (Neal) Tacy.

She married George B. Lyon on Oct. 4, 1930, in Walton.

She was a homemaker and a lifelong resident of Walton.

She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Walton and Daughters of the American Revolution.

She graduated from Walton High School, Class of 1924. She graduated from Syracuse University, Class of 1929.

She was predeceased by her husband, George B. Lyon on Jan. 1, 1970.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews including, Ruth Bradley Trudeau of Albany, Mary (William) Mace of Yorktowne Heights and John H. Lyon of Lakeland, Fla., and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be on Friday, July 17, 1998, at 1 p.m. at the Lyon Bros.-Way Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Lawrence Dunlap, pastor of United Methodist Church, Walton, officiating.

Burial will be in the Walton Cemetery.

Calling hours are on Friday, July 17, 1998, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Arrangements are by Lyon Bros.-Way Inc. Funeral Home, Walton.

Willis Edward Spaulding
WINDHAM — Willis Edward Spauling, 80, formerly of Windham, died Wednesday, July 15, 1998, in Columbia Memorial Hospital.

He was predeceased by his loving wife, Violet Maben Spaulding on May 2, 1977.

Surviving are his daughters, Terry Jenkins of Windham and Claudia Danna of Mechanicsburgs, Pa.; two sisters, Marion Billings and Sandra Richardson of Florida and one brother, Dayton Spaulding, of New Hampshire.

He is the grandfather of Erik Grasso, Cristin Jenkins and Courtney Jenkins.

Now retired, he was a teacher for the State of New York at Coxsackie Correctional Facility for 25 years. He was a member of the Lexington Methodist Church and an avid baseball fan.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Columbia Green Hospice would be greatly appreciated.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, July 19, 1998, at Decker Funeral Home, Main Street, Windham, at 2 to 5 p.m.

Funeral service will be on Monday, July 20, 1998, at the Lexington United Methodist Church at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Ellen Oliveto, officiating.

Interment will follow at the Lexington Cemetery, Lexington.

Robert A. Chappell
SARASOTA, Fla. — Robert A. Chappell, 78, of Sarasota, Fla., died July 8, 1998.

He was born Sept. 8, 1919, in Havana, Cuba.

He lived his childhood in Unadilla and graduated from high school in Unadilla.

He moved to Sarasota in 1983 from Pittsfield, Mass.

He was a technical writer for 28 years for General Electric in Syracuse and later in Pittsfield, Mass.

He was a member of Trout Unlimited, in Pittsfield, Mass., Ducks Unlimited, in Sarasota, Fla., and Florida Conservationists Association.

He graduated from Capital Radio Engineering Institute,  Washington, DC.

He was in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean War.

He was a member of the Pitcher Hill Community Church in North Syracuse.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jean L.; his daughter, Diane R. Chappell-Daly of Syracuse and his brother, David G. of San Jose,  Calif. and two grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at a later date in New York.

Memorial donations may be made to Trout Unlimited, Iroquois Chapter, care of John Moses, P.O. Box 44, Jamesville, N.Y., 13078.

Mary Elizabeth Connor-Smith
MIDDLEBURGH — Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Connor-Smith, of 9 Maple Ave., died Tuesday, July 14, 1998, at her home following a long illness.

Mrs. Connor-Smith was born in Utica on Aug. 9, 1920, a daughter of Francis P. and Eliza  White Finnegan.

She was the widow of George Connor, who died on Sept. 8, 1973, and Merlin Smith who died Jan. 29, 1990.

Mrs. Smith retired in 1991 from the Maintenance Department of the State University College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill.

She was a member of St. Catherine's Church and the Schoharie County Literacy Volunteers.

Surviving are a daughter, Georgia Anne Connor-Shultzman of Las Vegas, Nev.; two sons, George Michael Connor of St. Cloud, Minn., and Patrick Timothy Connor of New York.

Friends may call Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, 63 River St., Middleburgh.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, July 18, 1998, at 11 a.m. at St. Catherine's Church, Main Street, Middleburgh.

Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, West Winfield.

Leah Farrington
ENDICOTT — A funeral service for Leah Farrington of Endicott, formerly of Schenevus, who died July 12, 1998, will be held Thursday, July 16, 1998 at 2 p.m. at the Heller Funeral Home in Schenevus, with Father Richard Frey officiating.

Burial will immediately follow in the Schenevus Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home, Thursday, July 16, 1998, from 1 p.m. to service time at 2 p.m.

Expressions can be made to the Town of Union Emergency Squad or the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.
