MORRIS — A memorial service for May J. Milliken will be held Sunday, July 12, 1998, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Morris.
James R. (Jim) Parce
UNADILLA — Captain James R. (Jim) Parce, 70, a United States Navy retiree, of Unadilla died Monday, July 6, 1998, at the M.I. Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
He was born April 11, 1928, in Johnson City, the son of DeForest and Marion (O'Mara) Parce, who resided in Oneonta from 1932 to 1964.
He married Eleanor (Ginger) Ryan of Peekskill on Sept. 29, 1951.
Jim retired from the United States Navy in 1978 following 32 years of active duty. As a career military officer, he was a naval aviator and flew fighter and attack airplanes from various aircraft carriers. He served during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts followed by commanding a jet training squadron in Pensacola, Fla.
For a period of time, he performed diplomatic assignments in Venezuela and Peru. After his retirement, he was associated with Medical Coaches, Inc. of Oneonta from 1979 to 1988 as an interational sales manager.
Jim attended elementary and high schools in Oneonta, graduating in 1946. Following his enlistment in the Navy, he attended Mohawk Community College in Utica and received a bachelor's of science degree in engineering from the U.S. Navy Post Graduate School in Monterey, Calif.
He was a life member of the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation. Jim was an active mission pilot with the Civil Air Patrol Squadron in Norwich. Other memberships and affiliations include being past president, and past lieutenant governor of Kiwanis, past chairperson of the Oneonta Salvation Army Advisory Board, Oneonta BPOE No. 1312, the American Legion, and the Navy League. He was also an active member of the Sidney Golf Club and the A.C. Read Golf Club of Pensacola.
Jim epitomized and was eternally faithful to the virtues and values of a small-town upbringing to his family and friends made in Asia, South America and Europe.
He loved the freedom of flying and bore the responsibilities of similar challenges with a great enthusiasm for life. He felt blessed by his experience, the friendships which surrounded him and gave generously of his love. He was a teacher to us all.
He is survived by his wife Eleanor (Ginger) Parce of Unadilla; his children and their families, Commander John Parce, United States Navy retiree of Alexandria, Va., Thomas and Jerri Parce and their children Kyla, Jason and Joseph of Moscow, Idaho, Mary Kathryn Parce of Boise, Idaho, Diane and David Esqueda and their children, Emily, Carter and Ginger Rae of Stony Brook, Long Island. He is also survived by a sister, Mary Parce-Warnken of Concord, Calif.
A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, July 11, 1998, at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, Sidney, with the Rev. Gordon Polenz, pastor, officiating.
Bural will be in Fort Barrancas Naional Cemetery, U.S. Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Fla.
Friends may call on Friday, July 10, 1998, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Otsego County Public Health Nursing Service, 242 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y., 13820, the Unadilla Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 579, Unadilla, N.Y., 13849, or the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y., 13820.

John H. Ficken
EDMESTON — John H. Ficken, 70, died Wednesday, July 8, 1998 at M.I. Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
He was born Nov. 11, 1927 in Glen Rock, N.J. the son of Herbert J. and Mabel (Voorhis) Ficken.
He married Mary L. Collins in Wyckoff, N.J. on March 11, 1949. She predeceased him on Dec. 4, 1989.
John graduated from Ramesy High School in 1943, and then attended the Patterson Vocational School through 1944.
He served in the United States Navy from 1944-1946. At the end of his enlistment he was employed as a machinist at the Caswell Machine Works in Ramsey and Midland Park, N.J. John retired from the Industrial Brush Co., in Fairfield, N.J. in 1987.
John and his wife Mary were vacationers in Edmeston from 1974 until they made it their permanent home in 1987.
John enjoyed raising chickens, renovating the home that he retired to, and doing odd jobs for his friends and neighbors. He was a skilled woodworker as well as a machinist.
His favorite saying was; "I can fix anything but the weather!" His droll sense of humor was enjoyed by all that knew him, and will be remembered for years to come.
He is survived by his children and their spouses, John D. and Betsy Ficken, Daniel J. and Maureen Ficken, Darlene J. Perkins and Mark E. and Barbara Ficken; his grandchildren, Michael and Amanda Ficken, James Perkins and Richard and Stephan Viscito and his sister, Mary A. Ficken.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 10, 1998 at 3 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston with the Rev. John Buskey officiating.
Calling hours are one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John's memory to the Louis Busch Hager Cancer Center, 1 Atwell Rd., Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326.

Cherilyn A. Ray
EAST MEREDITH — Cherilyn A. Ray, 38, died Wednesday, July 8, 1998, at the Albany Medical Center, Albany.
She was born Jan. 29, 1960, in Margaretville, the daughter of Harold and Mabel (Currey) West.
She married Fredrick Ray (Rick) at the Highmount Ski Center on June 27, 1981.
She had been a housewife.
She was a lifelong resident.
She was a member of the Treadwell United Methodist Church.
Cherilyn is survived by her husband Rick at home; three children, Nathan Ray, Benson Ray and Jennifer Ray at home; her parents, Harold and Mabel West of Highmount; her sisters, Marilyn Morock of North Carolina, Laurilyn Frasier of Phoenicia and Jackily West of Staten Island; her brothers, Charles West of Fleischmanns, Mark West of Fleischmanns and John West of Elmira and many loving nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Gabrielle.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 11, 1998, at 2 p.m. at the Treadwell United Methodist Church, with a reception at the church following the service, and the Rev. Lyle Lindner officiating.
Burial will be in the Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.
Calling hours are Thursday, July 9, 1998, at 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday, July 10, 1998, at 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.
Contributions in her memory may be made to The Ray Family Education Fund in care of Treadwell United Methodist Church; Meridale Emergency Squad; and East Meredith First Responders.

Elsie E. Maloney
ONEONTA — A memorial service will be held for Elsie E. Maloney, formerly of Oneonta, on Saturday, July 11, 1998, at 2 p.m. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Main Street, Laurens, with the Rev. Lynn Ash officiating.
Inurnment of the cremains will be at Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
Elsie Maloney died March 19, 1998, at her home in Lyons, Colo.
Elsie Sweet was born on July 17, 1906, in Worcester, Mass., to Thomas and Helga Sweet.
She married Martin C. Maloney on May 31, 1931, in Brooklyn.
She was a member of the Atonement Lutheran Church in Oneonta for 40 years.
She worked in the adminstration department at the State University College at Oneonta until retiring.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Sharon Maloney of Kingwood, W. Va.; one daughter and son-in-law, Gale and Jack Voorhies of Lyons, Colo., where she made her home; one brother, Stanley A. Sweet of Worcester, Mass.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Kathy L. Maloney, her husband, her parents and one sister, Helen Hjortholm.
Scott Anson Roberts
ONEONTA — Scott Anson Roberts, 19, of Oneonta died Wednesday morning, July 8, 1998, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.
He was born Oct. 25, 1978, in Johnson City, the son of the Rev. Earl W. and Anne (Staples) Roberts III.
Scott had been an Oneonta resident since 1992 having previously lived in Sayre, Pa., where his father, the Rev. Earl W. Roberts III, was a pastor at area churches there and later here in Oneonta.
Scott was a graduate of Oneonta High School, Class of 1997. He had begun attending Hartwick College, Oneonta in September, 1997 where he studied art until he went on a medical leave.
While in high school, he was a member of the drama club and German club. He enjoyed drawing, collecting comic books and was enrolled in a tai chi class.
In the fall of 1997, Scott had a scratchboard drawing titled "The Tiger" published in the "Out of the Catskills and just Beyond" anthology published by Bright Hill Press.
Scott was a member of the Elm Park United Methodist Church, Oneonta.
One of Scott's loves was his dog, Charlie. He was also very close to his friends.
He is survived by his parents, the Rev. Earl W. and Anne Roberts III of Oneonta; one brother, Stephen A. Roberts of Oneonta; paternal grandfather, Earl W. Roberts Jr. of Barrington, N.J.; paternal grandmother, Dorothy C. Roberts in Havertown, Pa.; two aunts and uncles, Judith and Alan Higbee of Cleveland, Ohio and Alice and Lino Barilone of Philadelphia, Pa. and a cousin, Gabriella Barilone of Philadelphia, Pa.
He was predeceased by his maternal grandmother, Esther Roberts and maternal grandfather, Harold Staples.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 11, 1998, at the First United Methodist Church, Chestnut Street, Oneonta with the Rev. Dr. John L. and the Rev. Dr. Nancy E. Topolewski of Vestal and the Rev. William D. Bouton, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta, officiating.
Scott will be cremated following the funeral service at Hillington Crematory, Morris.
Friends may call at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta on Friday evening, July 10, 1998, from 7 to 9 p.m. when the Roberts Family will be present at the funeral home.
