John R. Keefe

Mr. John R. Keefe, age 71, of Mayfield, passed away Saturday, November 10, 2007 at Nathan Littauer Hospital following a long illness.

He was born on September 24, 1936 in Troy, NY, the son of the late John William Keefe and Helen (Ridley) Keefe. He worked at Coleco in Mayfield for twenty years. Then Mr. Keefe went on to own his own custodial service until his retirement.

John was an active member of the Mayfield Servicemen’s Club, the Gloversville Moose Lodge, and the Bleeker Fish & Game Club. Mr. Keefe was also a member of the Mayfield Volunteer Fire Department since 1970.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Geraldine M (Willis) Keefe, whom he married on July 2, 1960; two sons William S. Keefe and Richard E. Keefe both of Mayfield; a grandson, Stephen B. Keefe who is currently serving in the United States Marines; also surviving is his Aunt Tina and several of Mr. Keefe’s Cousins.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home; 51 Fremont St Gloversville. A funeral service will be held at 5 p.m. with the Reverend Bryan Dykema presiding. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. at Union Rural Cemetery in Mayfield on Friday, November 16. Memorial Contributions may be made in John’s memory to the Mayfield Servicemen’s Club or the Mayfield Volunteer Fire Department.

John C. Konik
Born in Little Falls, New York on Jan. 15, 1921

Mr. John C. Konik Sr. 86, passed away on Saturday November 10, 2007 at Nathan Littauer Hospital.Born January 15, 1921 in Little Falls, he was the son of the late John and Mary Holodryga Konik. A Gloversville resident most of his life, he had lived in Johnstown the past two years.

Mr. Konik was a graduate of Gloversville High School where he excelled both as a student and in basketball. After graduation he joined his father in the family leather business for a short time. He then enlisted in the Army, serving in Central Europe including Normandy, Northern France and Sicily. Upon discharge from the Army in 1945, he continued his education at the former Triple Cities College in Endicott, N.Y. where he received a degree in Economics. Early in his working career he had been employed in the office at Gloversville Knitting Mills, followed by a similar position at Mohasco Industries in Amsterdam. He retired in 1986 after 26 years as an office manager with the former Coleco Industries.

John was a member of Sacred Heart Church and the Catholic War Veterans, where he had been an active member for many years, serving on the bingo program and as a member of the bowling league. Earlier in his life he had also been a coach and manager for the Gloversville Little League. After retirement, he and his wife Adelene enjoyed many winters in Port Charlotte, Florida where they formed many new and lasting friendships.

A devoted family man, his grandchildren were always a great source of joy for him. He lived his life simple and honest, always treating people with kindness and respect, and receiving the same from others. He will be sadly missed.

He is survived by his wife Adelene “Addie” Mastrangelo Roach Konik of Johnstown whom he married August 21, 1948; his children: John C. (Connie) Konik Jr. of Caroga Lake, N.Y., Jan Marie Konik of Binghamton, N.Y. and Barbara Ann (Neil) Theiss of Katy, Texas. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Michael, Christopher, Daniel, Jonathon, Alexander and Ariel; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Konik was pre-deceased by his brother Michael “Mitch” Konik, and sisters Marion Johnson, Ann Velicky and Olga Marotta.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 am Wednesday at Sacred Heart Church in Gloversville with Reverend Donald Czelusniak, Pastor, as celebrant. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 4-7 pm at the Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville. James R. Ratajczak
Born in Amsterdam, New York on Aug. 12, 1961

James R. Ratajczak 46, of County Highway 126, Amsterdam, passed away Friday morning at the Mountain Valley Hospice Home in Gloversville. His loving family was at his side.
Born in Amsterdam on August 12, 1961, he was the son of Robert and Joan Liston Ratajczak. He was a 1979 graduate of Broadalbin Central School and later Fulton Montgomery Community College. Jim worked for P&C; Food Market for nine years, and for the past nineteen years by the US Postal Service. He was a clerk at the New Karner Road branch in Colonie. Jim was always known as a dedicated worker and was devoted to his family. He was a parishioner of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church.
His beloved wife, the former Sandra Burdette predeceased him on October 31, 2005. They had one son, James R. Ratajczak Jr., who survives. His father, Robert Ratajczak passed away earlier this year, on January 30th. Jim also leaves his mother, Joan Ratajczak of Amsterdam; brother; Steven R. Ratajczak of Amsterdam ;his step mother; Linda Ratajczak of Amsterdam; step sister; Donna Hamilton of Broadalbin, and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services are Tuesday at 8:30 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, followed by the Mass Of Christian Burial at 9:15 am at St. Mary’s Church. Interment is in the parish cemetery. Calling hours are Monday evening from 4-7 pm at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home office.

Loren A. Stewart
Born in Gloversville, NY on Sep. 29, 1929

Mr. Loren A. Stewart, 78 of Gloversville, died unexpectedly on Saturday afternoon, November 10, 2007 at Nathan Littauer Hospital Emergency Room with his family at his side.

He was born September 26, 1929 in Gloversville, the son of the late Russell and Grace Bandlow Stewart. He was a 1948 graduate of Gloversville High School and was a pitcher on the school’s baseball team. Professional Baseball scouts observed his talent, and following graduation Loren was sent to pitch for the St. Louis Browns in the Kansas-Oklahoma-Missouri League where he pitched to Mickey Mantle. He also pitched in the Canadian-Amercan League where he holds a record for pitching the most games in a single season. Former baseball manager Jack McKeon was one of his catchers at that time. Loren and Mantle were drafted into the Army at the same time during the Korean War. Mantle failed the Army physical exam and stayed in baseball while Loren served in the Army and never returned to baseball.

Loren was employed by the former G. Levor and Company and also for many years by Wood & Hyde Leather Corporation until his retirement. He was a member of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church and was inducted into the Fulton County Bowler’s Hall of Fame in 2005. He was very proud of bowling a perfect 300 game in 1980, and for many years bowled in several leagues including the Sunset, Adirondack, Friday Nite Men’s and Fulton County Classic Leagues. He loved his family dearly, and was an avid New York Yankees Baseball fan.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Jacqueline L. Newkirk Stewart, whom he married on February 9, 1952 at the former St. Mary’s Church; five children, Mary E. Orloff (Christopher), Deborah A. Semione (Gregory), John J. Stewart (Sari), Theresa R. Stewart and Joseph M. Stewart (Deborah), all of Gloversville; a brother, Robert R. Stewart (Julia) of West Monroe; an uncle, Ralph A. Stewart of Amsterdam; 13 grandchildren, Daniel Dmyszewicz, Sarah Orloff, Patrick and Lauren Semione, Brandon, Brittany, Bradley, Brian and Brody Stewart, Roberto Vega, Anthony Zarrelli and Joshua and Jordan Stewart; 7 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7 pm Monday, November 12th at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, where a prayer service will be conducted 9:15 am Tuesday, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church, Gloversville. The Very Rev. Donald Czelusniak will be the celebrant. Interment will take place at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown. William R. Bramer
Born in Amsterdam, New York on Feb. 16, 1947

William “Bill” R. Bramer, 60, of Mayfield passed away suddenly Friday evening, November 9, 2007. He was born February 16, 1947 in Amsterdam, NY, the son of Donald and Marie (Severine) Bramer, who predeceased him.
He attended Canajoharie and Clinton schools. He entered the Air Force in 1965 and served his country in Vietnam. In 1967, he graduated from the SeeBee U.S. Naval Schools construction in Port Hueneme and Port Magu California. He graduated with honors. He also attended the Air Force heavy equipment school at Eglin Air Force base in Florida. He married Linda Monroe on November 22, 1969.
He spent the last thirty-six years as a heavy equipment operator for several companies, such as DA Collins, Jackie Bombard, Barsons, Delaney and most recently A. Servidone of Castleton, NY.
He is survived by his loving daughter Connie and her husband Tom Conti of Randall. Two very cherished granddaughters: Linda and Alexys Conti, two brothers: John (Ella) Bramer of Canajoharie and Roger (Chris) Bramer of Cassville, NY; two sisters: Janet (Bob) Hamrick of St. Mary’s , GA and Donna Lake of Mayfield; a “stepmom” Mary Vila of Johnstown, several nieces and nephews and a multitude of lifetime friends. He was predeceased by one brother, Milton Bramer of California in 1997.
The family will receive friends at Jeffords and Stewart Funeral Home, 85 West Main Street, Broadalbin, NY on Monday from 5-8 p.m. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home Tuesday at 11 a.m. Interment will immediately follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Fonda. Donations can be made in Mr. Bramer’s memory to the American Heart Association, 440 New Karner Rd. Albany, 12205.

Marie Z. Riker
Born in Poland on Jan. 18, 1917

Mrs. Marie Z. Bobrovitch Riker, age 90 of Johnstown, New York; died on Friday morning, November 9, 2007 at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville, NY. She had battled with cancer for the past four years.

She was born in Poland on January 18, 1917, the daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Bobrovitch. During World War II Marie was taken by the Germans from her family in Poland and placed in a concentration camp in Germany where she was forced to work on German aircraft repairs. She came to the United States in the 1950’s and lived in the Bronx, NY area for most of her life. She worked in the home of a Bronx Supreme Court Judge.

Mrs. Riker was of catholic faith, and enjoyed sewing and making quilts. She loved to be taken by limousine to casinos in New York and Connecticut.

She is survived by five children, Louise M. Punch, with whom she resided in Johnstown, Judith Schumann of Washingtonville, Josephine Armstrong of Queensbury, Elizabeth Zylinski of Alabama and Stanislaw Zylinski of Pennsylvania; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and nieces, nephews and other relatives in Europe. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Walter Zylinski and Louis Riker; and a daughter, Dorothy Everett.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 1 to 3 pm Sunday, November 11th at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, NY. Interment will take place Monday at Oak Hill Cemetery, Nyack, NY. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fulmont Community Action Agency, Inc; P.O. Box 835, Fonda, NY 12068 or to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Rd; Loudonville, NY 12211.
