John J. Sullivan
January 2, 2006
John J. Sullivan, 84, passed away on January 2, 2006 in Mesa AZ. John was born November 5, 1921 in Jersey City to the late George and Anne Sullivan, John was a WW II Army combat veteran, serving with the 10th Armored Infantry through France and Germany. After the war, John returned home in September 1945 to marry his one love, Helen (Matulewicz) on September 21, 1945. John moved to Sullivan County where he began his 30 career with the US postal service, ultimately retiring in January 1981 as Post Master of Rock Hill, a position for which he held for over 20 years. The fire service was a very large part of John’s life. He was member of the Rock Hill VFD. After retirement, John and Helen moved to Arizona, with John joining the Sun Lakes FD, retiring there after 10 years as Assistant Chief in charge of Communications. John was very active with the VFW and Knights of Columbus.
John is survived by Helen, his beloved wife of 60 years, in Sun lakes Arizona, their daughter Sharon Broskin and her companion Kevin McGarvey, of Rock Hill, Brother Jim and his wife Joan of Sun City Florida. Two grand children, Tricia of Peoria Ill. And Casey Broskin of Rock Hill, two (really great) great-grandchildren, Chase and Jenna of Peoria Ill. His Aunt, Rita McCreery of Monticello, Cousins Virginia Scott and David McCreery of Rock Hill, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A Funeral mass was held for John January 6th in Sun Lakes AZ. A Grave side service will be held here 11:00 am February 28 at St Peters cemetery, Rock Ridge Road, Monticello. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s memory to the Rock Hill Fire department.
Arrangements are under the direction of the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home of Monticello.

Barbara Elizabeth Callaghan Post
December 31, 2005
Barbara Elizabeth Callaghan Post of Bloomingburg, entered into rest on Saturday, December 31, 2005 at Park Manor Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Middletown. She was 85 years old.
The daughter of the late William Thomas Callaghan & Jane Elizabeth Wiley Callaghan, she was born April 26, 1920 in Springfield, Mass.
Barbara was a 1946 graduate of the Springfield Hospital School of Nursing. She would later dedicate 20 years of her life serving the patients of Horton Memorial Hospital in Middletown. She retired in 1982.
A family statement reads: “Barbara was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother to her family. All of her life she gave tremendously and expected nothing in return. She went without life’s little luxuries so that her loved ones would want for nothing. She was dedicated to her chosen profession of nursing, which she poured her heart and soul into. She was a woman of beauty, dignity and grace right up to the very end. The world will not be the same without her.”
She is survived by her husband of 59 years: Townsend F. Post, at home; a daughter: Jane Connors at home; two sons: William Post & his wife Mahes of Honolulu, HI and Townsend Post & his wife Cornelia of Houston, TX; two grandchildren: Aaron Connors & his wife Cathy of Climax, NY and Heather Connors and her partner Salvatore LaBruna of Middletown; three great grandchildren: Liam, Riley & Caitlin Connors; her sister-in-law: Ruth Waddell of Newton, NJ; and several nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother: Harold Callaghan and a sister: Jane Brown.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 3 from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro.
Her funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 4 at 11:00am at the funeral home. Rev. Robert Pinto will officiate.
Burial will be held in the Bloomingburg Rural cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home of Wurtsboro.

Ann E. Badendyck
December 26, 2005
Ann E. Badendyck of Yankee Lake, a retired medical transcriptionist at the Mid-Hudson Psychiatric Center in New Hampton, died Monday, December 26, 2005 at the Orange Regional Medical Center, Arden Hill Campus. She was 71.
The daughter of the late William Dempsey and Mary Carey Dempsey, she was born December 2, 1934 in Brooklyn.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Wurtsboro where she was active in the Ave Maria Guild.
Survivors include her children: Kim Platt & her husband John of Wurtsboro; Donna Belskie of Wallkill, Thomas Badendyck of Yankee Lake and Eric Badendyck of the state of Florida; her grandchildren: Brooke, Kori Ann, and Dana Platt, and Brianna & Katlin Belskie; one great grandson: Noah; her sisters: Mary Malgraf, Eileen Colagrande, Julia Hartin, Kate Browne & Linda Burke; her brothers: Billy Dempsey & John Dempsey; and several nieces & nephews.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 29 from 2-4 & 7-9pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro.
Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, December 30 at 1:30pm at St. Joseph’s Church, Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro. Fr. Peter Madori will officiate.
Burial will be in St. Joseph’s cemetery in Wurtsboro.
Memorial contributions can be made to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, 1 Hanover Park, 16633 No. Dallas Parkway, Suite 600, Addison, TX 75001.
Arrangements are by the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home of Wurtsboro.

Wendy Ann Herbert
December 23, 2005
Wendy Ann Herbert, a medical record and billing employee of the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Dept, and lifelong resident of the area, died unexpectedly at her home in Ferndale on Friday, December 23, 2005. She was 53.
The daughter of Vera Barber Bernhardt and the late Leland Bernhardt, she was born October 25, 1952 in Monticello.
She is survived by her husband: James E. Herbert, at home; her mother: Vera Bernhardt of Monticello; a son: Shawn Herbert & his wife Krystal of Liberty; a stepson: Keith Herbert & his family of Liberty; two sisters: Glenna Price & her husband Vincent of Monticello and Dawn Riley & her husband Patrick of Amsterdam; four grandsons: Keith, Jr., Michael, Stephen & Lucas; Her four-legged grandchildren: Cooter, Ghost Boy & Pupper; two brothers-in-law: Richard Herbert & his wife Kathy of Jeffersonville, and Herman Herbert & Kris of Beachwoods; a sister-in-law: Eloise McKeon & her husband Michael of Liberty; several nieces, nephews, great nieces & nephews, aunts & uncles.
There will be no visitation and cremation will be held at Cedar Hill Crematory in Newburgh. Services may be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Sullivan County SPCA, 25 Rock Hill Drive, Rock Hill, NY 12775.

Stefania Oliwa
December 19, 2005
Stefania Oliwa, the former Head of Housekeeping for the Pines Hotel in South Fallsburg, and longtime resident of the area died, Monday, December 19, 2005 at the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 79.
The daughter of the late Leon & Sophie Czarnobaj, she was born June 1, 1926 in Poland. She was the widow of Stanley Oliwa who predeceased her in 1983.
Ms. Oliwa was involved with various community service projects including the elections. She attended Immaculate Conception Church in Woodbourne.
She is survived by two sons: Peter Oliwa of Parksville and Theodore Oliwa of South Fallsburg; four brothers: Walter Black of Middletown, and Raymond Nash, Charles Czarnobaj, & Peter Czarnobaj, all of England. She was predeceased by a brother: Joseph Czarnobaj.
There will be no visitation and cremation will be held at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Newburgh.
Memorial contributions can be made to the American Diabetes Assoc., 149 Madison Ave, Room 701, New York, NY 10016.
Arrangements are under the direction of the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home of Monticello.

Doris Barbara Albrecht Burns
December 12, 2005
Doris Barbara Albrecht Burns, the former owner of Burns’ Bar & Grill in Monticello, died Monday, December 12, 2005 in Hershey, PA.
She was 88.
The daughter of the late Herman & Pauline Schneider Albrecht, she was born October 19, 1917 in Monticello. Doris was a lifelong resident of the Monticello area before retiring to Florida in 1979. She and her husband then moved to Pennsylvania in 2000. Her husband, Bruce, predeceased her on July 30, 2002.
She is survived by three daughters: Sharon Murphy of Columbia, MD, Alice LeBlanc of Alburg, VT and Barbara Benton of Marietta, GA; two brothers: Fred Albrecht of White Lake and Eugene Albrecht of Jupiter, FL; a sister: Annette Lange of Hershey, PA; 6 Grandchildren; 11 Great Grandchildren; and several nieces & nephews.
She will be missed dearly by all those who loved her.
Visitation will be held on Friday, December 16 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello.
Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 17 at 10:00am at the funeral home. Dr. John C. Kehoe of Alburg, VT will officiate.
Burial will be held in Rock Ridge cemetery in Monticello.
Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Central Pennsylvania, P.O. Box 266, Enola, PA 17025-0266.

Elsie Elizabeth Decker
December 8, 2005
Elsie Elizabeth Decker, a homemaker and lifelong resident of the area, died Thursday, December 8, 2005 at the Newport Hospital in Newport, Rhode Island. She was 81.
The daughter of the late Melvin D. Price and Lillian May Thornhill Price, she was born September 10, 1924 in Monticello. She was the widow of Victor H. Decker, Sr.
She is survived by three sons: Paul Decker, Clarence “Brud” Decker & Victor Decker, Jr., all of Monticello; two daughters: Jane Ann Mello of West Kingston, RI and Gloria Jean Goetjen of Washington; 16 Grandchildren; 22 Great Grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers: Charles Price and Irwin Price; and two sisters: Edith Messenger and Evelyn Strobele.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 10 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello.
Her funeral service will be held on Sunday, December 11 at 2:00pm at the funeral home. Rev. Roy Shaffer will officiate.
Burial will be held in the Messenger cemetery in Monticello.

Jane C. Stricko
December 8, 2005
Jane C. Stricko of Wurtsboro, homemaker and longtime resident of the area, died Thursday, December 8, 2005 at the St. Cabrini Nursing Home in Dobbs Ferry, NY. She was 83.
The daughter of the late Edmund Laskowski and Victoria Barthold Laskowski, she was born September 14, 1922 in Florida, NY. She was the widow of Joseph P. Stricko, Sr. who predeceased her on September 24, 1998.
She is survived by one son: Joseph P. Stricko, Jr. of Goshen & Yankee Lake; a daughter: Susan Clouse of Hartsdale; two brothers: Edmund Laskowski of Texas and Richard Laskowski of New Hyde Park; five sisters: Stella Mangan of the state of Florida, Victoria Woods of Garden City, Irene O’Neal of Monroe, LA, Frances Gavin of Mystic, CT and Sophia Farrar of New Jersey; two grandchildren: Melissa and Maria; one great grandson: Joseph Paul; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 11 from 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro.
Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, December 12 at 10:00am at St. Joseph’s Church, Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro. Rev. Peter Madori will officiate.
Burial will be held in the Sylvan cemetery, Wurtsboro.

Mary Frances Hooks Snowden
December 2, 2005
Mary Frances Hooks Snowden, a former certified nursing assistant for the Hamilton Ave. Hospital in Monticello and longtime resident of the area, departed this life on Friday, December 2, 2005 at the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 76.
The daughter of the late Willie Armstead & Blanche Hooks, she was born June 25, 1929 in Bromley, Alabama.
Mary was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Monticello where she was active as a senior usher and assisted with the Vacation Bible School and the Missionary Dept.
She leaves to cherish her memories, her husband: Levon Snowden, Sr., at home; four sons: Levon Snowden, Jr. (Ella), John Snowden (Dorothy), and Michael Snowden (JoAnn), all of Monticello, and Robert Snowden (Juanita) of Raleigh, NC; two daughters: Mary Hopkins of Monticello and Mamie Ward (Kenneth) of Raleigh, NC; a daughter-in-law: Shirley Snowden of Monticello; 16 Grandchildren; 9 Great Grandchildren; three aunts including her devoted aunt: Stella Walker of Monticello; an uncle: Isaac Hooks of Alabama; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, especially those at the Catskill Dialysis Center in Monticello who cared very much for her.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a son: Mack Snowden and a brother: Jack Hooks.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 8 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello.
Her funeral service will be held on Friday, December 9 at 1:00pm at the First Baptist Church, Liberty Street in Monticello. Rev. James Matthews will officiate.
Burial will be held in Rock Ridge cemetery in Monticello.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Catskill Dialysis Center, Forestburgh Road, Monticello, NY 12701 or to the Kidney Fund at Albany Medical Center.

Henryk Mituniewicz
November 30, 2005
Henryk Mituniewicz of Monticello, a retired car mechanic from New York City, died Wednesday, November 30, 2005 at the Achieve Rehab & Nursing Facility in Liberty. He was 80.
The son of the late Waclaw & Maria Mituniewicz, he was born in July, 1925 in Poland.
He is survived by his loving wife: Helena Chmiel Mituniewicz, at home; and several area friends.
Visitation will be held on Friday, December 2 from 12:30pm to 1:30pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello. His funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday afternoon at 2:00pm at St. Peter’s Church, Broadway & Liberty Street in Monticello. Rev. Robert Ginel will officiate.
Burial will be in St. Peter’s cemetery in Monticello.
