OUR MOTHER – DORA F. WHITE 1897 – 1991
By Alice Louise Clarke Dippo
SHE WAS THERE TO HEAR OUR FIRST CRY
FROM THENCE, SHE WAS EVER BY OUR SIDE,
TO KISS AWAY THE HURTS WHETHER GREAT OR SMALL
NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENED, SHE GAVE HER ALL.
WE’LL NEVER FORGET HER SMILE.
FOR EVERY GOOD TIME, IT WAS AS BROAD AS A MILE.
SHE WAS EVER SO PROUD OF EACH ACHIEVEMENT.
TO EACH GENERATION, SHE GAVE HER COMPLIMENT.
SHE LIVED IN MANY PLACES IN HER NINETY-FOUR YEARS.
FOR MANY REASONS, SHE LEFT BEHIND, THOSE SHE HELD DEAR.
EACH PLACE, SHE MADE MANY FRIENDS
AND LEARNED TO LOVE THEM TO THE END.
WHETHER SHE TRAVELED TO PENNSYLVANIA TO VISIT HER “MOM AND POP"
OR LATER HER SISTER AND BROTHERS, TO HER, IT WAS A SHORT HOP.
HER CHILDREN BECAME SCATTERED TO THREE CORNERS OF THIS LAND.
THE BEAUTY OF IT ALL WAS RECALLED IN WRITTINGS IN HER HAND.
HER LIFE WAS NOT ALWAYS A BED OF ROSES,
BUT SHE HELD HER HEAD HIGH AS EACH CHAPTER ENFOLDED.
HER VOICE COULD BE HEARD WHEN THE HYMNS SHE DID SING;
NOW SHE’LL JOIN THE ANGEL CHOIR AS THEIR VOICES RING.
TO MANY OF YOU WE HAD TO ENLIST HER CARE;
FROM OTHERS SHE RECEIVED HER BELOVED MAIL.
WE CANNOT REPAY WHAT WAS DONE FOR EVER SO LONG A TIME,
BUT WE’LL TRY TO “PASS IT ON” TO SOMEONE IN NEED ALONG THE LINE.
OUR MOTHER NOW IS AT REST
WHILE HERE SHE DID HER VERY BEST.
NOW SHE’S AT PEACE BE GOD’S SIDE
TO WAIT UNTIL WE AGAIN WITH HER ABIDE.
