Richard C. Fisher
Mr. Richard C. Fisher, 87, of Gloversville, N.Y., died Tuesday, Dec. 11, at Nathan Littauer Hospital, following a brief illness.
He was born on Sept. 6, 1914 in Gloversville, the son of Homer and Alice Schuyler Fisher. He was a 1932 graduate of Gloversville High School and attended the former Gloversville Business School.
He was employed as a clerk by the Gloversville Water Works for over 40 years. He also worked part-time at Dunday's Clothiers in Gloversville for over 20 years.
Mr. Fisher was a longtime member of the former First United Methodist Church of Gloversville, where he had served on the administrative board. Since 1999 he was a member of the Fremont Street United Methodist Church. He was a director of the Gloversville YMCA; a former board member of the Eccentric Club; a former member of the board of trustees of the Gloversville Free Library; a board member of the former Automobile Club of Fulton County, and a past director of the Sir William Johnstown Boy Scout Council. He also dined with "The Lunch Bunch" at the Johnstown Holiday Inn.
He was married
on April 8, 1939 to Vivian Oaksford. who survives. Additional survivors include sons, David R. Fisher and his wife, Linda, of Gloversville and Edwin W. Fisher and his wife, Sara, of Columbia, S.C.; brother, Gerald S. Fisher of Vero Beach, Fla.; granddaughters, Kristin Fisher Komarinski and her husband, Derrick, Karen L. Fisher, Robyn S. Fisher and Barrett E. Fisher; nephew, Richard Fisher.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday. The Rev. Wayne E. Jones Jr. and the Rev. Douglas G. Lathrop will officiate. Interment will take place at Prospect Hill cemetery, Gloversville. Helen A. Blanchard
Helen A. Blanchard, 82, formerly of Queen Anne Road, Amsterdam, passed away Friday morning at Montgomery Meadows Residential Health Care Facility, where she was a resident.
She was born on Nov. 17, 1919 in Amsterdam, the daughter of Eugene and Lizzie Cole Stock. She was locally educated and was a lifelong area resident.
Mrs. Blanchard was a homemaker devoting her time to her family. She was a member of the Fonda-Fultonville United Methodist Church and a former member of the Fort Hunter Methodist Church.
She is survived by her loving sons, John M. Blanchard of Fultonville and Frank R. Blanchard of Fort Hunter; a sister-in-law, Anna Myers of Fort Hunter; and four grandchildren, William, Susan, Jessica and Kenneth Blanchard.
Mrs. Blanchard was married
on Sept. 21, 1944 to Marcellus A. Blanchard, who passed away on June 2, 1987.
Calling hours were held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, where funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday. The Rev. Douglas Lathrop officiated. Interment will take place at Pine Grove cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Fort Hunter Fire Department, c/o the funeral home.
Harriet Dorn Harvey Tyrrell
Mrs. Harriet Dorn Harvey Tyrrell, 99, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, at Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility, Gloversville, where she had resided for three years.
She was born on Aug. 2, 1902 in Madrid, N.Y., the daughter of John and Orilla Baker Dorn. She was educated in Johnstown schools and was a registered nurse, graduating from Nathan Littauer School of Nursing in 1923.
She worked a a visiting nurse for John Hancock Insurance Co. for 13 years and did general and private duty nursing at Nathan Littauer Hospital.
On Oct. 20, 1924, she married
H. Lyndon Harvey, who died on Feb. 16, 1968. On Nov. 15, 1972, she married
Lewis R. Tyrrell, who died on July 15, 1992. They resided in Beacon Woods, Hudson, Fla. for 20 years. In June 1992, they returned to live in Gloversville.
Mrs. Tyrrell was a member of the New Port Richey United Methodist Church in Florida. She was an active member of the Christian Women's Club of New Port Richey. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Gloversville; Cayadutta Chapter 166, Order of Eastern Star; and Nathan Littauer Hospital Alumnae Association. She was a member of the Civic Association, Travel Club and the Shuffle Club, all of Beacon Woods, New Port Richey.
She is survived by her grandchildren, Elizabeth "Beth" Hoagboon of Gloversville, Bridget L. Hoagboon of Tucson, Ariz., Melinda Sheyon of Scotia, James R. Hoagboon of Mayfield, John Harvey of Gloversville and James Harvey of Connecticut; three great-granddaughters, three great-grandsons and a niece, Meredith Mihalik. She was predeceased by a daughter, Sheryl J. Harvey Hoagboon, who died on Feb. 19, 1999; and a son, Lyndon B. Harvey, who died on Nov. 19.
There will be no calling hours or services. Memorial contributions may be made to the Nathan Littauer Hospital Building Fund. Arrangements are by Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc. Private interment will take place at Prospect Hill cemetery at the convenience of the family.
Patricia A. Preston
Patricia A. (Insognia) Preston, 64, of West Trenton, N.J., died Dec. 6 at Capital Health Systems Hospital.
She was born on Oct. 1, 1937 in Gloversville, the daughter of the late Pasquale and Mary Bien Insognia. She graduated from Gloversville High School, St. Catherine's Infant Home for Nursing in Albany and The College of St. Rose.
She taught elementary education at the former parochial schools in Gloversville. She later moved to New Jersey and was employed by the state of New Jersey Department of Agriculture as a statistical enumerator. She later moved back to Gloversville and graduated from FMCC in a course for culinary arts.
She is survived by daughters and sons-in law, Stephanie A. and William Gandy Jr. of Trenton, N.J., Sandra M. Cook of Paso Robles, Calif. and Margaret H. and Kenneth Tucci of Rio Grande, N.J.; son, Robert C. Preston Jr. and his life partner, Troy L. Chappelle of Phoenix, Ariz.; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Claudia Insognia of Gloversville; 11 grandchildren, Timothy, Andrew, Stephanie, Hailey, Anthony, Kristen, Sharon, Keri, Monica, Rebecca and Veronica; two nephews, Patrick R. Insognia and Robert J. Insognia; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family will be receiving relatives and friends from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony's Church, Johnstown, where a memorial Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. James Fitzmaurice, pastor, will be celebrant. Burial of cremains will immediately follow at Prospect Hill cemetery, Gloversville. Arrangements are by Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 147 Bleecker St., Gloversville.
Clarence P. Van Allen
Clarence P. Van Allen, 96, formerly of Kingsboro Tower Apartments, died Wednesday at Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility after a long illness.
He was born on July 24, 1905 in Bleecker, the son of Bryon and Harriett Johnson Van Allen. Mr. Van Allen was educated in West Bush schools.
For 20 years, he was a leather worker for the former G. Levor Leather Co. Mr. Van Allen also worked for the former Bleyl Leather Co. and most recently for the Wood & Hyde Leather Co., and retired in 1972. After retiring, he was a security guard at the former Coleco Industries in Mayfield.
Mr. Van Allen was a member of Mayfield Senior Citizens.
Survivors include two sons, Clarence P. Van Allen Jr. of Mayfield and Donald Van Allen of Stratford; two daughters, Edith Reeves of Mayfield and Julia Hayes of Gloversville; a brother, Wesley Van Allen of New York City; a sister, Lela Van Buren of Gloversville; 36 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
His wife, Edna Lawyer Van Allen, whom he married
on June 19, 1926, died in 1977. He also was predeceased by a son, Charles Van Allen; daughter, Jeannine Hayes; two brothers, George and Fred Van Allen.
Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 147 Bleecker St., Gloversville, where a service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will take place at Prospect Hill cemetery, Gloversville. Contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 N. Main St., Gloversville, NY 12078.
Mary C. Skoda
Mary C. Skoda, age 66, passed away on Oct. 29, 2001 after a short illness.
She was born on April 4, 1935 in Gloversville, N.Y., the daughter of Charles and Agnes Cassedy; the granddaughter of Fredrick and Della Duesbury and Rt. Honorable Edward and Capitola Cassedy.
Mary was a graduate of Gloversville High School, Class of 1953. She attended St. Lawrence University from 1953 to 1955. She transferred to Mildred Elley Secretarial School, graduated in 1956.
She married
Robert L. Kennedy on Feb. 24, 1956 and they moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked in the Pentagon for the Department of the Air Force.
Her son Tom was born on Sept. 14, 1957 in Alexandria, Va. She returned to Gloversville in September 1957. Her daughter Tara was born on Nov. 13, 1958 and son Jay, on Sept. 24, 1960.
She returned to college in 1968 and obtained a bachelor of arts degree from the State University of New York at Albany, graduating Cum Laude in May 1971.
She accepted a teaching position at Fonda-Fultonville Central School in 1971, retiring in 1991 after 20 years as an American history teacher.
She met Charles T. Skoda, a retired foreign service officer, originally of Johnstown, N.Y., and they were married
April 3. 1982. This marriage brought three grown children to the family, Leslie McCalley and husband Mark, of Tucson, Ariz.; Thomas Skoda and wife Sally, of Knoxville, Tenn.; and Barrie Foster and husband Stephen, of Memphis, Tenn.
In 1984 she became involved in developing a Hospice chapter in Gloversville. As a founding member and later president of the Fulton County Hospice, her early efforts and commitment insured the eventual success of the agency that now serves a multi-county area in upstate N.Y., now known as Mountain Valley Hospice.
Her son Jay married
Susan Diana in 1986. They reside in Queensbury, N.Y.
In 1991 after her retirement, Mary and Charles wintered at Vista Royal in Vero Beach, Fla., where she was involved as a Hospice volunteer.
Her son Thomas married
Bonnie DelCostello in 1997. They reside in Charlotte, N.C.
In 1998 Mary and Charles relocated to Vero Beach, Fla. from Gloversville.
Mary and Charles organized and sponsored family reunions in Gloversville, 1997; Townsend, Tenn., 1999; and Phoenix, Ariz., 2001. These reunions were attended by their entire immediate and extended family.
Husband Charles, six children, 12 grandchildren, cousins Dr. Samuel Wait and wife Carol, and Edward Cassedy and wife Pat survive her.
Her mother Agnes Cassedy, married
George N. Jackson in 1955. George's son Stanley (deceased) and wife Eleanor Jackson, who resides in Ballston Spa, N.Y., is mother to five sons.
Interment will take place in Prospect Hill cemetery, Gloversville.
