Robert S. Jones

Robert S. Jones, 64, of Dygert Rd., Canajoharie, passed away suddenly Monday morning, March 25, 2002, while helping out at his daughter's home, leaving his life as he lived it &emdash; a devoted and loving father.

He was born on November 4, 1937, in Amsterdam, and lived his entire life in the Marshville area. He was the oldest son of Harry and Dorothy Poole Jones. He attended country schools and graduated from Canajoharie High School. He was a lifelong member of Marshville Evangelical Church.

After working in the pea fields for Beech-Nut for a few years, he was employed for 32 years as a burner man for Agway until his retirement in January 2000. There are few homes in the area that he has not been in to fix or install a furnace at some time.

He was married to Betty Saltsman Jones on August 24, 1963. Together, they built a home for their three children behind his parent's home so that he could lovingly care for his parents for the rest of their lives.

His hobbies and interests centered around things done with or for his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed taking them all to the family camp in Wells or tenting out on one of the islands of Indian Lake. He and his son enjoyed hunting and fishing together. He has left behind memories in every corner of his family's homes because of his hobby of wood-working, and the flower gardens and fruit trees which he enjoyed planting and caring for will continue to bloom in his memory. He also took pride in being the family mechanic and handyman.

He will be deeply missed by his wife, Betty J. Jones of Canajoharie, NY; 2 daughters: Jennifer and her husband, Kevin May, of Canajoharie, NY, and Beckie Jones and her companion, Steve Soodsma, of Canajoharie, NY; 1 son: Craig Jones of Canajoharie, NY; 6 grandchildren: Ashley, Andrew, Alyssa and Alex May of Canajoharie, NY, and Cora and Jared Soodsma of Canajoharie, NY; 1 brother: Alan and his wife, Ellen Jones, of Jordanville, NY; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles & cousins; beloved dogs Hershey, Jake and Kecia.

A funeral service will be held at 11 AM Thursday, March 28, 2002, at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie, with Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating.

Calling hours will be 7-9 PM, Wednesday, March 27th, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Marshville Evangelical Church, St. HWY 10, Canajoharie, NY 13317.

Arlene E. Smith Rockwell

Mrs. Arlene E. Smith Rockwell, age 77, of Steele Ave. Ext., Gloversville, died Tuesday morning, March 26, 2002, at Ellis Hospital, Schenectady. Her death followed a long illness.

She was born July 23, 1924, in Gloversville, the daughter of James and Kathryn Green Smith. She was employed by Conroy Glove Company of Johnstown for many years and later by Halo Optical Company of Gloversville for several years. She was a member of Johnstown Women of the Moose and its shuffleboard league, and the Johnstown Pocahontis. She also was a member of several bowling leagues in the area.

Mrs. Rockwell is survived by her companion, Roland Clute of Gloversville; her daughter, Sharon Molinari of Port Charlotte, FL; son, Patrick Lavery of Mayfield; son, Robert Lavery of Bremerton, WA; son, James Lavery of Gloversville; daughter, Kathryn Bradt of Gloversville; stepson, Brian Lavery of Waldo, FL; stepdaughter, Donna Cerasuolo of Gloversville; stepfather, James I. Putman of Gloversville; 21 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her two husbands, Donald Lavery in 1971, and Donald Rockwell in 1983; and also by her brother, Vernon Smith.

There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, March 30th at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville with the Rev. R. W. Williams officiating. Private interment will take place at Fern Dale cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Judes Research Hospital, P.O. Box 3704, Memphis, TN 38103.

Leondra Conroy

Mrs. Leondra Conroy, 63, of Briggs Street, Johnstown, died Monday March 25, 2002, at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, after a long illness.

She was born on February 13, 1939, in Johnstown, the daughter of Leon and Marguerite Stortecky Simons.

Mrs. Conroy was a former member of the Gloversville Moose.

She was employed at the former Leon Swears Glove Co., Johnstown.

Mrs. Conroy is survived by her husband Robert S. Conroy Sr. whom she married May 30, 1970. Two sons James J. Jones of Farmington, NH; Robert S. Conroy Jr. of Johnstown. Three grandchildren, and cousins.

Calling hours will be on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the A. G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 East Main Street, Johnstown.

Funeral services will be held Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. following visitation. With Rev. R. W. Williams officiating.

Cremation will be at Vale Crematory, Schenectady.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to the James Brennan Humane Society.

Margaret (Zelewitz) Tischler

Margaret (Zelewitz) Tischler, 98, of South Rd., Enfield, died, Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at Parkway Pavilion in Enfield. She was the wife of the late Hubert Tischler. Margaret had lived in Latvia for 23 years until coming overseas to the United States and settling in New York, then moving to Enfield to be with her daughter in 1997. While in Latvia she traveled in a theatrical group where she performed as an actress in many parts of Europe. She loved to read and engage in conversation, and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her daughter, Anita Matuck of Enfield; a sister, Eleanor Podznik of Linz, Austria; and two grandchildren, Christine Lang and her husband, David, of Santa Barbara, CA and Margaret Matuck of Westfield, MA. Besides her husband she is predeceased by a son Hubert Tischler Jr. and a brother, Carl Zelewitz. Margaret's family will receive relatives and friends from 6-7 p.m. on Friday March 29, at the Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Rd., Enfield. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers memorial donations in Margaret's name may be made to Parkway Pavilion Healthcare, 1157 Enfield St., Enfield, CT 06082.

Elaine B. Wilder Gergich

Former area resident Elaine B. Wilder Gergich, born on June 3, 1941, died Dec. 17 at the home of her son after a long illness.

While in the area she worked at several jobs as a housekeeper.

She is survived by three children, Gerald Rhodes, Donna Wilder and LoriAnn Lewis; brothers and sisters, Mary Pantalone, Marilyn Murray, Don, Dick, Gary, James, Ronald and William Wilder; nine grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by husband, Stanley Gergich; her parents, Edith and Clarence Wilder; and one brother, Wesley Wilder.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday at Younglove-Smith & Ryan Funeral Home, 777 Long Pond Road, Rochester. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

Gudrun Gundersen Skarstein

Mrs. Gudrun Gundersen Skarstein, 90, of North Shore Road, Peck's Lake, Gloversville, N.Y., died Tuesday, Dec. 18, at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital, Amsterdam, N.Y., following a short illness.

She was born on July 2, 1911 in Norway, the daughter of Frederick and Nella Tonnesen Gundersen. She and her family came to the United States in 1928 and settled in Brooklyn.

She was employed as head dietitian by Deer Park School System, Long Island.

She was a charter member of Faith Evangelical Free Church of Dix Hills, N.Y., where she was active in the Women's Missionary Society and the Senior Saints. She attended the First Baptist Church and the Christian Business Women's luncheons, both in Johnstown, N.Y.

She is survived by sons, Robert Skarsten of Wilton, N.Y. and William Furman of Caroga Lake, N.Y.; daughter, Laila Onufrak of Peck's Lake, Gloversville, N.Y.; sister, Tordis Leire of Sogne, Norway; sister-in-law, Elsie Gundersen; granddaughters, Lisa Dutter of Mattydale, N.Y., Karin Leonard of Littleton, Colo., Andria Lynn Onufrak of Lakewood, Colo. and Amy Nakano; grandsons, John M. Onufrak of Cleveland, Ohio, Kenneth Frank Onufrak of Watkins, Colo., Eric Furman and Matthew Furman; great-grandsons, Timothy Britt, Mason Britt, Michael Britt and Kenneth Frank Onufrak; great-granddaughter, Summer Lailena Nakano; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was married on June 24, 1936 to Birger Skarstein, who died on April 18, 1996. She was also predeceased by son, Norman F. Skarsten; three brothers; and two sisters.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. The Rev. Bruce Hoose, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Johnstown, will officiate. A graveside service of committal will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday at Oakwood cemetery, Bay Shore, N.Y. Memorial contributions may be made to R.B.C. Ministries, PO Box 268, Grand Rapids, MI 49501-0268.

Luigi Iorio

Luigi Iorio, 62, of Market Street, passed away Thursday afternoon at St. Mary's Hospital with his family at his side.

Born in Casal di Principe, Caserta, Italy on May 29, 1939, he was a son of Crescenzo and Esterina D'Ambrosio Iorio. He attended seminary Prep School and was a graduate of fashion design school in Italy. He came to Amsterdam in 1956 and began his career in the clothing industry. For twenty-three years, he along with his wife owned and operated the New Paris Shop on East Main Street. Luigi served with the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1965 and with the Army Reserves until 1967.

He was a member of the Amsterdam Chamber of Commerce and the Amalgamated Textile Union of America.

Mr. Iorio was a communicant of St. Michael The Archangel Roman Catholic Church.

His loving family includes his wife, the former Philomena Carbone whom he married on Sept. 18, 1966; his mother, Esterina Iorio of Italy; a son, Crescenzo, and his wife, Davia DelZotto Iorio, of Amsterdam; a daughter, Philomena Iorio of Amsterdam; four brothers, Armando Iorio of Amsterdam, Raffaele Iorio of Gloversville, Pietro and Dante Iorio, both of Italy; three sisters: Anna D'Aniello of Amsterdam, Giulia and Rita Iorio, both of Italy; two dear grandchildren, Luigi and Davia Olivia Iorio; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Nicolena Palumbo, and two infant twin brothers.

Funeral services are Monday at 8:15 a.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave. Followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 9:15 a.m. at St. Michael The Archangel Church. Entombment will take place at a later date in a family mausoleum in St. Michael's cemetery. Calling hours are Sunday from 3-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the National Shrine of North American Martyrs in Auriesville, St. Michael's Memorial Fund or the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, all in care of the funeral home.
