Janek “John” Mackiewicz
Oct. 20, 1925 ~ May 28, 2013
John Mackiewicz had seen a lot in his 87 years with us. He was born
to Bronislaw and Albina Zywolewska Mackiewicz and raised on a farm in Horodenka, rural Poland. In his early teens, he had to endure the atrocities of his homeland being invaded by the Germans and Russians, and to endure the horror of seeing his father taken to Siberia and killed by the Russians.
John’s start in life was far from being a fairy tale, but it molded him into the man we all loved. He was a humble, family man who appreciated every day of his life with his family. In fact, for John, I would say that “life” and “family” were synonymous.
When John was in his 40s he was courageous enough to leave his homeland and emigrate to the U.S. He began his life in the U.S. as a baker with Lowery Bakery, Sunnyside, Queens. While he worked hard and was dedicated to his job, work was not life. His life was his family.
He married
Czeslawa in Poland in 1968 and became a father to Robert (1970) and Magda (1971). While John was always a family man, he now had a family of his own. As hard as he worked, he always made time for family, whether immediate or extended. There are many of us here today that have the honor of saying that John had become our second father. If a family member was in need, John was there. If there was a “phone call from Poland,” John always accepted the call.
In today’s world we are all overwhelmed with “life” and create more and more complexities. John had the uncanny ability to filter the complex “noise” of day-to-day life so he would be able to hear life’s symphony.
John did not have diplomas or degrees. He did not have the opportunity to attend the finest universities, but he was one of the most educated people on the subject of life. You see, John had a double major, Life and Family, and he graduated at the top of his class.
John will be sorely missed by his beloved wife Czeslawa of East Northport; his children, Robert (Andressa) and Magda (Richard) Mazur; and by his loving grandchildren, Alec, Ricky and Tommy.
The world has lost a great man — but heaven has gained a great soul.
The funeral took place on June 1 at St. Anthony of Padua R.C. Church in East Northport, followed by interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram.
Arrangements under the direction of Nolan and Taylor-Howe Funeral Home of Northport.
