Elsie Gangi
Longtime Sag Harbor resident and former owner of Tony's Coffee Shop, Elsie Gangi died at her home in Virginia Beach on Monday, March 15. She was 98.
Mrs. Gangi and her husband Anthony "Tony" started the coffee shop on the Sag Harbor-Bridgehampton Turnpike in 1955. Following her husband's death in an auto accident a few years later, Mrs. Gangi single-handedly ran the business until she sold it in 1998, when she was 92, and moved to Virginia to live with her daughter, Lorraine, and Lorraine's husband Edward Eichhorn.
Her Sunday lasagna special and her meatball grinders were a favorite at the coffee shop, where people came by not just for the food but for a good chat with Mrs. Gangi, who spoke her mind. She was a special favorite of the area's UPS drivers, who converged on the coffee shop for lunch and helped if there were any household chores to be done.
Mrs. Gangi was a prolific knitter and crocheter, donating her baby hats and sweaters to the hospital gift shop in Virginia Beach. She gave generations of babies in many Sag Harbor families beautifully crafted blankets or sweater-and-hat sets.
Mrs. Gangi was born in Bridgehampton to Clara (nee Brainker) and Fredrick Grimshaw. She moved to Sag Harbor with her husband in 1942.
Mrs. Gangi is survived by her daughter and son in law, both formerly of Sag Harbor; two grandchildren, Tony Eichhorn, and Michelle Roberts and her husband Scott, all of Virginia; as well as by two great-grandchildren, John and Megan Roberts. A sister, Mary Lester of East Hampton, as well as many nieces and nephews, also survive.
Services will be private. Interment will be at St. Andrew's Cemetery in Sag Harbor. Memorial donations may be made to East End Hospice.
Perry B. Duryea, Jr.
A memorial service for Perry B. Duryea, Jr., 82, who passed away January 11, will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 27 at the Montauk Public School.
"Perry Duryea remains one of the most highly respected and admired Assembly Speakers in State history," Governor Pataki said in October, 2003, at a ceremony where a State office building in Hauppauge was named for Mr. Duryea, in honor of his contributions and commitment to the people of Long Island and New York State. "During his long and distinguished career in public service, Speaker Duryea dedicated his heart and soul to the people of New York, and especially the citizens of Long Island."
Perry B. Duryea, Jr., was born in Montauk, New York and graduated from East Hampton High School. After earning his BA from Colgate University in 1942, Duryea joined the U.S. Naval Air Transport Service where he attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He served in World War II as a plane commander flying four-engine seaplanes in the South Pacific theater. Following his service in WWII, Duryea ran his family's seafood distribution business in Montauk.
Perry Duryea, Jr. began his career in public service as a member of the Montauk Public School Board of Education. Like his father, Perry B. Duryea, who served in the State Legislature as a State Senator from the First Senate District, Duryea was elected to the State Legislature as a State Assemblyman in 1960, representing the First Assembly District.
During his nearly two decades in the Assembly, Duryea served 12 years as the top Republican leader. He was speaker of the Assembly from 1969 to 1973 and served as Minority Leader from 1966 through 1968 and again from 1974 to 1978. In 1978, Duryea was the Republican candidate for Governor of the State of New York.
Duryea also served as president of the Long Island State Park Commission, Bethpage Park Authority, and Jones Beach State Parkway Authority between 1963 and 1969. His leadership contributed significantly to the legacy of the park system and the preservation of open space on Long Island.
Until his death, Duryea continued to serve his community through his work with numerous public and private organizations, including Long Island Commercial Bank, where he was Chairman of the Board. He had been Chairman since the inception of the Bank in January of 1990.
William Huber
William L. (Bill) Huber, of Sag Harbor, died on May 26, 2004 at Southampton Care Center. He was 92 years old and had been in failing health for the past few years.
Born February 10, 1912 to William F. and Lena (Herz) Huber in the Canarsie section of Brooklyn, New York, Mr. Huber attended Brooklyn public schools. His father died when Bill was in his 'teens' and Mr. Huber and his sister Anna were raised by their mother. During the Depression years Mr. Huber attended night schools, receiving training as a draftsman and industrial designer. He also operated a charter fishing boat out of Canarsie and was proud of his Captain's license received from the Coast Guard. During World War II he was employed at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and was instrumental in the design of gun mounts for motor torpedo boats. Also, among other wartime projects, he was involved in designing the mounts for test firing the main battery guns of the Free French battleship Richelieu. After the war, he received his teaching certificate and became an industrial arts teacher in New York City high schools.
In 1954, Mr. Huber married the former Gretchen Monroe and they settled in Wantagh, Long Island. In that same year they bought a piece of waterfront land in Noyac and Mr. Huber designed and built the home to which, in 1972, they eventually retired. They loved to travel and to entertain at their home and they were active in church and senior citizen organizations. Mrs. Huber predeceased her husband in 1997.
Mr. Huber had varied interests and loved all things mechanical. He volunteered at the Branford Trolley Museum in Connecticut, wrote a history of the Shinnecock Canal for a canal enthusiasts' publication and was instrumental in preserving and restoring the historic Erben organ at the Old Whalers' Church in Sag Harbor. He was a member of the Organ Historical Society, the Steamship Historical Society, the American Lighthouse Society, The Society of Railway Engineers, and the First Presbyterian Church of Sag Harbor. He is survived by a stepdaughter, a step grandson, and cousins.
A funeral was held on Saturday, May 30 at the Old Whalers' Church in Sag Harbor. Interment was at Oakland Cemetery.
Memorial gifts may be made to the organ fund of the First Presbyterian Church, Sag Harbor, New York.
