Paul "Hook" Montanye
August 22, 1996
Paul E. "Hook" Montanye, 79, of Brand Road, Rural Grove, died Thursday at home following a short illness.
Born july 13, 1917, in Charleston Four Corners, he was the son of Frank Montanye and Gertrude Adams. He was educated in Charleston Four Corners Country Schools.
Mr. Montanye was employed as a construction worker with several local companies and retired from Lancaster Development Co. in Cobleskill in 1980.
He was of the Protestant faith.
Mr. Montanye was a lifetime charter member of the Rural Grove Volunteer Fire Department. He also served as its chief.
Me married Mary Belenic on Dec. 16, 1944, in St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Canajoharie.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Montanye is survived by two sons, Douglas P. Montanye of Canajoharie and Lawrence W. Montanye of Sprakers; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Christian Church Cemetery at Charleston Four Corners. The Rev. James Foster will officiate.
Burial will take place in Christian Church Cemetery, Charleston Four Corners.
Calling hours will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 N. Main St., Gloversville 12078.
Doris Stanton
Aug. 23, 1996
Doris M. Stanton, 77, of Locust Avenue, Amsterdam, died Friday morning at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam.
Born July 13, 1919, in Gloversville, she was the daughter of Delos and May Brown Walters. Mrs. Stanton was a graduate of Gloversville High School.
She was employed as a waitress at Quinn's Restaurant in Broadalbin, and was also employed by Mohasco Industries for a number of years.
Mrs. Stanton was a member of the Sacandaga Boat Club and a member of St. Monica Court No. 61, Order of The Amaranth of Amsterdam.
She was also a member of the United Methodist Church of Amsterdam.
Her husband, Raymond J. Stanton, whom she married Aug. 19, 1939, died Feb. 3, 1973. She is also predeceased by a son; Raymond J. Stanton Jr., who died in 1985.
Survivors include a son, Francis W. Stanton of Fonda; two brothers, Woodard D. Walters of Caroga Lake, and Robert F. Walters of Gloversville; two grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside service will be held at the Hagaman Cemetery, Hagaman, Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. R.W. Williams officiating. There will be no calling hours.
Arrangements are by the Betz Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam.

Lila Ferguson
Aug. 23, 1996
Lila Ferguson, 88, formerly of Fishhouse Road, Town of Providence, died early Friday morning at the Edward Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility in Amsterdam after a long illness.
Born Dec. 7, 1907, in the Town of Edinburg, she was the daughter of Michael and Lena Edwards Donnelly. She was a lifelong area resident.
Mrs. Ferguson was a member of the Northampton United Methodist Church at Fishhouse and the Broadalbin Senior Citizens club.
She married Alfred A. Ferguson in 1927. He died in 1971.
Mrs. Ferguson is predeceased by a son, Robert Ferguson, who died in 1988.
Survivors include three sons, Alfred W. and Roger Ferguson of Broadalbin, and Richard Ferguson of Galway; three daughters, Eileen Kondrat of Middle Grove, Shirley Mickan of Broadalbin and Beverly Watrobski of Galway; a brother, Edward Donnelly of Ellenton, Fla.; 31 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; one niece and one nephew.
Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Jeffords Chapel, 85 W. Main St., Broadalbin.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Northampton United Methodist Church at Fishhouse with the Rev. Robert L. Jeffers officiating.
Interment will be in Broadalbin Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Providence Ambulance Corps or the Northampton United Methodist Church.
Marie Gillan

Marie Katherine Gillan, 91, formerly of the Stratton Apartments, Amsterdam, and the Park Hill Adult Home, died Friday at St. mary's Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born in Amsterdam March 29, 1905, the daughter of Walter and Delia Kavanaugh Masten and was a lifelong city resident.
She was a 1922 graduate of St. Mary's Institute.
Mrs. Gillan was a member of St. Mary's Church, the Rosary Society, St. Mary's Seniors, and was a charter member of the former SMI Social Club.
Her husband, Frank J. Gillan, died in 1955. She was also predeceased by a daughter, Mary Elizabeth McKenna.
She is survived by two sons, Joseph A. Gillan of Arlington, Va., and Gary T. Gillan of Amsterdam; a daughter, Sheila A. Scheckton of Amsterdam; 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are 8:30 a.m. Monday at the Riley Mortuary Inc., 110 Division St., Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 a.m. at St. Mary's Church.
Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Amsterdam, St., Mary's Church or St. Mary's Hospital Foundation.
Barney Natoli
Aug. 24, 1996
Barney Natoli, 82, a former resident of Academy Street, Amsterdam, died Saturday morning at the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility in Amsterdam after being a resident there for seven years.
Mr. Natoli was born Feb. 23, 1914, in Amsterdam, the son of John and Marie Dalia Natoli.
He was a lifelong resident of Amsterdam and attended local schools. For 55 years, Mr. Natoli was employed as a barber, working for the former Ideal Barber Shop on Market Street and retiring a number of years ago.
He was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church of Amsterdam.
Survivors include two brothers, John J. Natoli of Amsterdam and Anthony J. Natoli of West Virginia; a sister, Mary Smicinski of Amsterdam; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services are 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Betz Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9:15 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, Grove Street, Amsterdam.
Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery, Amsterdam.
Calling hours are Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Edward L. Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility.
Thomas Baranauskas
Aug. 8, 1996
Thomas E. Baranauskas, 36, of San Francisco, a former resident of Schenectady, died Aug. 8 at the Davies Medical Center in San Francisco after a brief illness.
He was born in Schenectady Oct. 28, 1959, the son of Edward and Eleanore Svegzda Baranauskas.
He attended local schools and was a 1977 graduate of the former Linton High School. During his senior year he was editor of the school newspaper and class yearbook.
Mr. Baranauskas attended Cornell University and graduated from the University of Missouri School of Journalism. At the time of his death he was employed by the City of San Francisco as a supervisor in the computer department. He moved to California 12 years ago.
In Schenectady he was a communicant and former altar server at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church.
He was predeceased by his mother, who was a native of Amsterdam. She died in 1975.
Survivors include his father and step-mother, Edward and Genute Baranauskas of Schenectady; a brother, George Baranauskas of Scotia; two sisters, Barbara A. Hoefs of Fonda and Sandra J. Soltren of Ballston Spa; several nieces and nephews.
Services were held at St. Ann's Chapel in St. Casimir's Cemetery, Amsterdam, with the Rev. Bernard J. Gustas officiating. Interment followed in the cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Casimir's Memorial Fund, 260 E. Main St., Amsterdam.
