Catherine Hayes
October 20, 1996
Mrs. Catherine Lee Hayes, formerly of the New Amsterdam Apartments, died Sunday evening at the Mount Loretto Nursing Home, where she had been a resident since 1985.
Born Oct. 11, 1902 in Charlton, she was the daughter of James and Honor Stack Lee. She resided in Brooklyn for many years moving to Amsterdam in 1967.
She was a graduate of the St. Mary's School of Nursing in Brooklyn.
Mrs. Hayes was employed as a registered nurse in various hospitals in the New York City area, and also in private practice. She retired in 1967.
She was a communicant of the former St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church of Amsterdam.
She was predeceased by her sister, Johanna Lee Holland, in 1984.
She married John D. Hayes on April 6, 1931. He died Dec. 31, 1979.
Mrs. Hayes is survived by three nieces, Margaret Reid Walsh of Barnegat, N. J., Catherine Reid of Yonkers and Honor Holland Drohan of Amsterdam; several great-nieces and great-nephews and several great-great-nieces.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:15 a.m. Thursday at the Betz Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Amsterdam.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Ballston Spa.
Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Walter Vincent
October 20, 1996
Walter Vincent, 76, of 23 Failing Ave., St. Johnsville, died Sunday at his home.
Born Aug. 22, 1920 in Albany, he was the son of the late Harold and Margaret Flanigan Vincent. He was a graduate of Albany High School and moved to the St. Johnsville area in 1984.
Mr. Vincent was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, being honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of sergeant. While serving his country, he fought in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. After being honorably discharged Mr. Vincent joined the New York National Guard and retired with the rank of brigadier general.
For 16 years, until his retirement in 1986, he was a purchasing officer for the New York State Thruway Authority.
He was a member of the Earl Stock Memorial Post Fort Plain VFW American Legion Post No. 71 in New Smyrna, Fla.; and Loyal Order of Moose No. 1835 in New Smyrna, Fla.
He married Rita Papa on Nov. 30, 1952.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Walter (Larry) Vincent of Guilderland; a daughter, Diane Brennan of Schenectady, seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Vincent was predeceased by a brother, Harry Vincent of Nassau.
Funeral services will be conducted at the convenience of the family.
There are no calling hours.
Arrangements are by the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville.
Alberta Jones
October 22, 1996
Mrs. Alberta R. Jones, 74, of Northern Boulevard, Hagaman, died early today at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital after being stricken at home.
Born April 21, 1923 in Amsterdam, she was the daughter of George and Hazel Carr Bornt. She was a graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School and was a lifelong resident of the Amsterdam area.
Mrs. Jones was employed by the former Mohawk Carpet Mills of Amsterdam, until her retirement in 1962.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hagaman and of the Hagaman Senior Citizens.
She married Herman W. Jones on Dec. 20, 1958. He died Aug. 14, 1995.
Mrs. Jones is survived by her son, Russell H. Jones of Hagaman; two brothers, Laverne and George Bornt, both of Hagaman; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Johnson-Lindsay Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, Amsterdam, with the Rev. John R. Becker officiating.
Burial will be in Union Mills Cemetery.
Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hagaman Volunteer Fire Department or to the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
Edmond Richard
October 22, 1996
Edmond H. Richard, 93, of West Street, Fort Plain, died this morning at his home.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Gray-Houghtaling and Smith Funeral Home, Fort Plain.
Eva Marie Hazzard
October 20, 1996
Eva Marie Hazzard, 63, of Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, died early Sunday morning at St. Mary's Hospital after a long illness.
Born Sept. 27, 1933 in the Black Forest region of Germany, she was the daughter of Otto and Cecilia Gottel. She moved to the United States and to Amsterdam after her marriage in 1953.
Mrs. Hazzard was a homemaker. She was a communicant of St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church.
She married Gordon C. Hazzard on Oct. 31, 1953.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Gordon O. Hazzard and Christopher A. Hazzard, both of Amsterdam; four daughters, Cecilia Hazzard of Oppenheim, Anita Ericson of Hagaman, Lorraine Clarke of Dansboro, Pa., and Joanne Cardona of Amsterdam; three sisters, Margaret Hosler of Wamego, Kan., Sophie Klawe and Lotte Sandle, both of Germany; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at the convenience of the family at the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, with the Rev. Joseph J. Grabys officiating. Interment is in St. Casimir's Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Pediatric Department of Amsterdam Memorial Hospital in care of the Rossi Funeral Home.
John White
October 19, 1996
John White, 78, of the Montgomery Meadows, Sandy Drive, Amsterdam, died Saturday afternoon at the home after a brief illness. He was a former resident of Albany.
Born Nov. 27, 1917 in Chicago, Ill., he later moved to Albany, where he resided for most of his life.
He served with the Merchant Marines for a time and was employed as a superintendent for the Tenbroeck Apartments in Albany before retiring.
He was of the Catholic faith.
He is survived by his friend, Dawn Tatlock and family of Amsterdam.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday at The Polish National Catholic Church of the Good Shephard, Teller Street, Amsterdam.
Calling hours are private.
Interment is in Good Shephard Cemetery.
Arrangements are by the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, Amsterdam.
Audrey "Ada" Horning
October 19, 1996
Mrs. Audrey "Ada" Horning of the Trackside Homes, Johnstown, died Saturday at Little Falls Hospital.
Born in the Town of Palatine, she was the daughter of John and Katie Edick Hinkle and was a lifelong resident of the Johnstown area. She worked in area glove shops for many years. Mrs. Horning was then employed by St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam until her retirement in 1975.
She was married to George Horning, who died in 1979.
Survivors include two sisters, Frances R. Kumpan of Johnstown and Ruth Skakel of Johnstown; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Horning was predeceased by two sons, Robert E. Horning and George W. Horning.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Ehle Funeral Home, 15 N. William St., Johnstown, with the Rev. Richard L. Sears officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Johnstown.
