Shirley Roberts
November 16, 1996
Miss Shirley K. Roberts of Route 67, Johnstown, died Saturday at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam after a long illness.
Born in Rochester, Miss Roberts was a graduate of West High School in Rochester and St. John Fisher University, where she received a nursing degree. Miss Roberts earned a degree in business and management from the Rochester Institute of Technology.
For many years, she was employed as a manager for Taylor Instruments in Rochester and later worked as a licensed real estate agent for Coldwell Banker.
In 1989, Miss Roberts moved to Mayfield and opened Remember When, an antiques shop that later closed. Most recently, she operated the Just By Chance antiques shop at the Hillcrest House Antique Mall in Fultonville.
She was a member of the Mayfield Historical Society and Sacred Heart Church in Gloversville.
Survivors include a daughter, Coral Roberts of Johnstown; a son, Emmett Roberts of Johnstown; a brother, William Belding of Rochester; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home, 215 E. Main St., Johnstown. Burial will be in Mayfield Cemetery.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Gladys Nestle
November 17, 1996
Miss Gladys Amelia Nestle, 87, formerly of 40 Phillips Ave., Canajoharie, died Sunday at the St. Johnsville Nursing Home, where she had lived for the past three years. She also was a former resident of East Main Street in Nelliston.
Born Nov. 18, 1908 in Canajoharie, she was the daughter of Edgar and Lilla Mae Crane Nestle. She was educated in Canajoharie and was a lifelong area resident.
Miss Nestle worked on the family farm for eight years and later received a degree as a licensed practical nurse.
Miss Nestle was a private duty nursing for 58 years.
She was a member of the Fort Plain Methodist Church.
Survivors include several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at the Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego St. with the Rev. Wayne Cole officiating. Burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery.

George Dicks
November 29, 1996
George Edward Dicks, 84, of Canal Street, Fort Plain, died Friday evening at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam after a brief illness.
He was born in St. Johnsville Jan. 28, 1912, the son of Isaac and Lillian Shepard Dicks. Mr. Dicks was a 1930 graduate of Fort Plain High School and a lifelong area resident.
He was employed as a toll and die maker and as a machinist at Beech-Nut Packing Co. in Canajoharie for more than 40 years, retiring in 1977.
He was of the Protestant faith.
He was married to Mildred Z. Knapp for 60 years. She died Jan. 7.
Survivors include a son, Robert A. Dicks Sr. of Whitesboro; a sister, Elsie Dicks of Syracuse; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral is 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Gray-Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain, with the Rev. Jeff Thibodeau officiating.
Burial will be in Fort Plain Cemetery.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Anna Miles
November 30, 1996
Anna Miles, 83, formerly of Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, died Saturday at Montgomery Meadows.
She was born May 6, 1913, in Amsterdam, the daughter of James and Mary Miklonis Barkevich. She attended Amsterdam schools and was a lifelong Amsterdam resident.
Mrs. Miles was a self-employed seamstress.
She was married to Clayton Miles. He died in February 1983.
Survivors include a daughter, Jeanne Morales of Amsterdam; a brother, William Barkevich of Amsterdam; a sister, Frances Nolan of Amsterdam; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; nieces and nephews.
The funeral is 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, Amsterdam, with the Rev. Joseph Grabys officiating.
Burial will be in St. Casimir's Cemetery.
Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Gerardo Loffredo
November 27, 1996
Gerardo Giuseppe Loffredo, 5, of Fowler Street, Hagaman, died Wednesday at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J.
He was born June 19, 1991, in Niskayuna, the son of Antonio and Gaetana "Tina" Speranza Loffredo. He attended St. Mary's Institute in Amsterdam and for the past three weeks had attended St. Francis Cabrini School in Piscataway, N.J.
He was a member of St. Stanislaus Church.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include a brother, Luciano M. Loffredo, also of Hagaman; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Giuseppe Speranza of Amsterdam; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Gerardo Loffredo of Salerno, Italy; maternal great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Vito Cutri of Pisciotta, Italy; three uncles, Vito and Antonio Speranza of Amsterdam and Francesco Loffredo of Salerno, Italy.
Funeral services are 8:30 a.m. Monday at the Rossi Funeral Home, 11 Mohawk Place, Amsterdam, followed at 9 a.m. by a Mass of the Angels at St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church.
Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery, Amsterdam.
Calling hours are 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Mary Crane
November 28, 1996
Mary E. Crane, 95, of Montgomery Meadows Residential Health Care Facility, formerly of Hickory Hill Road, Fort Plain, died Thursday at the nursing home after a long illness.
She was born in the Town of Glen July 13, 1901, the daughter of Lewis B. and Cora M. Barlow Crane. She was a lifelong area resident.
She helped her brother, Frank Crane, operate a dairy farm in Fort Plain for more than 40 years, and also worked at the Beech-Nut Corp. in Canajoharie for many years, retiring several years ago.
Miss Crane attended Salem United Methodist Church in Stone Arabia.
No known relatives survive.
Funeral services are 11 a.m. Monday at the Gray, Hotaling & Smith Funeral Home, 34 Center St., Fort Plain, with the Rev. Wayne Cole officiating.
Burial is in Fort Plain Cemetery.
A calling hour will precede the service Monday, beginning at 10 a.m.

Edward Carpenter
November 28, 1996
Edward M. Carpenter, 81, former resident of the Park Hill Adult Home, Grove Street, Amsterdam, died Thursday at the Quabbin Valley Health Care Center in Athol, Mass., after being a patient there since October 1991.
Born Jan. 2, 1915, in Amsterdam, he was the son of Arthur B. and Mae McBurney Carpenter.
Mr. Carpenter was a lifelong resident of Amsterdam. He graduated from Wilbur H. Lynch High School and Union College in Schenectady. In the 1930 and '40s he played trumpet for the Hal Kemp Big Band.
He was an accountant for the state Department of Taxation and Finance in Albany. He also owned and operated the former Carpenter Hardware Store on Market Street, Amsterdam, until retiring in 1971.
Mr. Carpenter was a member of St. Ann's Episcopal Church, Amsterdam.
Survivors include two cousins, Ann McBurney Underwood of Johnstown and Kay Charles of Gloversville.
Private funeral services are at the convenience of the family at the Betz Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, where the Office for the Burial of the Dead will be read by the Rev. Christopher Smith, rector of St. Ann's Episcopal Church.
Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Amsterdam.
There will be no calling hours.
