Mary Rose Lake
HILTON — Mary Rose Lake, 81, of Hilton passed away Sunday morning, Jan. 8, 2006, at Park Ridge Hospital in Greece.
Mary was born Aug. 17, 1924, in South Kortright, daughter of Ralph and Mae (Gates) Rose.
She married O. Warren Lake on June 25, 1949. He passed away in 1979.
Mary was a graduate of the University of Rochester class of 1949 and worked as a registered nurse in the Rochester area. She had an eye for bird-watching and genealogy. Mary also loved Christmas and other holidays.
She is survived by her children, Susan Frank, Steven (Mary) Lake, Philip (Lisa) Lake, Richard (Jennifer) Lake; sisters, Anne (John) Knight, Ruth (Floyd) Many, Evangeline Girandno; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and friends.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan 14, at Hilton Baptist Church.
Private inurnment will take place in Parma Union Cemetery.
Those who wish may contribute to Hilton Baptist Church Memorial Fund in Mary’s memory.

Joan L. Higgins
Johnson CITY — Joan Louise Higgins, 58, died peacefully in her home Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, after a long illness.
She was born in Sidney on Sept. 12, 1947, the daughter of Edward A. and J. Louise Hull W. Higgins.
A member of the National Honor Society, Joan graduated from Sidney Senior High School in 1965. She continued studies at the State University College at Oneonta, State University College of Technology at Delhi and Broome Community College.
Although Joan struggled with illness all her adult life, she pursued many interests and had many friends. She also corresponded with numerous pen pals all over the world. An award-winning visual artist, Joan’s other interests included anthropology, astronomy, biology, cooking, history, mathematical puzzles and zoology. She especially loved horses, cats and sunsets.
Joan is survived by her mother, Louise W. Higgins of Gilbertsville and Sidney; a brother, Earl A. Higgins of Sidney; a sister, Jane Evelynne Higgins and her husband, Albert J. Caranci, of Gilbertsville. She is also survived by her best friend, Vanda Haller, and her beloved cats, Scruffy and Skeezix.
Joan was predeceased by her father, Edward A. Higgins, in 1990. Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Memorial services will follow at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Robert E. Witt Jr. of the Zion Episcopal Church in Morris officiating.
Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Unadilla in the spring.
Arrangements are by C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.
Patricia Gallup Walling
NEWARK, N.J. — Patricia Gallup Walling, 66, of Brick, N.J., passed away Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, at the University Hospital in Newark, N.J.
She was born May 31, 1939, in Oneonta, the daughter of Lucy Taite and the late Burdette Gallup.
She attended the Schenevus and Oneonta school districts. Before moving to New Jersey in 1977, Patricia worked at local supermarkets and the Holiday Inn in Oneonta.
She married Robert Walling.
Patricia is survived by two daughters, Royce Barthelmes of Conway, S.C., and Gail and her husband, Dan DeCola, of Remsen; four grandchildren, Erica and Shawn Barthelmes and Timothy and Jessica Walling; one great-grandchild, Casey Barthelmes; her mother, Lucy Taite; two sisters, Cindy Amash and Lois and her husband, Budd Whitbeck; a brother, Steve and his wife, Theresa Taite; and her aunt Anita Axtell.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert; and her son, Richard Walling.
Calling hours will be held from noon until 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.
A spring graveside service will be held in the Maryland Cemetery.

Evelyn C. Barron
OXFORD — Evelyn C. Barron, 87, of Ithaca, died Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006, at the New York State Veterans Home at Oxford. She was the daughter of the late Leland and Gladys Ernest Campbell.
Evelyn was retired from the New York State Historical Association in Cooperstown.
Survivors include a son, Bradley James Barron of Florida; daughter, Elizabeth Wood of Boston; grandchildren, Jennifer Gross of Norwich and Stuart Wood of Boston; a sister, Virginia Snyder of Ithaca; a sister-in-law, Margaret Drake of California, and several nieces and nephews.
Private graveside services will be held in the spring in Calvary Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the SPCA.

Richard J. Romeo
CONESVILLE — Richard J. Romeo, 57, passed away of natural causes at home Sunday, Jan. 8, 2006, in the town of Conesville.
Born in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late Betty Hale and Angelo Romeo. He was educated in the NYC school system. He faithfully served his country in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971 and was honorably discharge as a Vietnam veteran.
He was a merchant seaman employed by Gellatly and Criscione. Richard was married to his wife, Catherine, Aug. 9, 1997, at St. Philip Neri Roman Catholic Church in Grand Gorge.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine, and children, Elizabeth, Hannah, Jessica, Denise and Jason.
Friends may call Friday, Jan. 13, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Steven Moore in the St. Philip Neri Roman Catholic Church, Grand Gorge, at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14. Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.
Thomas S. Murphy
UNADILLA — Thomas S. Murphy, 64, of Unadilla, passed away Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.
He was born Aug. 28, 1941, in Gilbertsville, the son of the late Arthur and Marjorie (Douglas) Murphy.
Tom graduated from Morris Central School and served in the United States Army from 1964-1966. He graduated from Hartwick College in 1974 and taught music in the Mount Upton and Deposit school systems before a distinguished career as the instrumental music teacher at Unatego Central School. He retired in 1996.
Tom established The Catskill Valley Wind Ensemble in October 2001, which has grown to more than 40 members invited from a field of trained area musicians, including music teachers, community members and serious students. Tom also served for several years as conductor of the Bainbridge Old Time Band, and performed in the Oneonta Community Concert Band, the Hartwick College Wind Ensemble, the SUNY Oneonta Concert Band, and The New York State Shining Brass Band.
Since 1985, Tom owned and operated Hannalore Kennels of Unadilla, where he handled, bred and showed Basenji dogs in the 1970s and later became Top Show and breeder of Shelties.
Tom is survived by his son and daughter-in law, Larry and Chrystie Stafford, of Albany; his brothers and sister-in-law, Douglas and Marion Murphy of Oneonta, and Marvin Murphy of Spring Hill, Fla.; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Lucy Ann and Walter Upham of Westmoreland, and Kathleen and Walter Schober of Hillsdale; a brother-in-law, William Murphy of Morris; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister, Nancy J. Murphy.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006, at the Otego United Methodist Church, Church Street, Otego, with the Rev. Fred Albrecht, retired Methodist minister, officiating.
Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home Inc., 123 Main St., Unadilla, (directly off Exit 10 of I-88) from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2006, when the family will be in attendance.
Interment will be later in the Croton Union Cemetery, Treadwell.

Harold ’Jack’ Sperbeck
EAST WORCESTER — Harold "Jack" Sperbeck, 77, of County Route 38A, died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2006, at Eden Park Healthcare Center in Cobleskill.
Mr. Sperbeck was born Sept. 12, 1928, in Richmondville, the son of Andrew and Frances (Hayes) Sperbeck.
Mr. Sperbeck retired from Astrocom Electronics in Colliersville as an assembly worker. He was previously employed by the D&H Railroad and also worked for Charlie Bilby.
He was a United States Army veteran, serving from 1950 until 1952, when he received an honorable discharge.
Jack enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, motorcycling and repairing small engines.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret (Paulin) Sperbeck, whom he married Aug. 3, 1958; a daughter, Cindy Brownell, of East Worcester; a son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Cynthia Sperbeck, of Milford; a sister, Edna Sperbeck, of East Worcester; two grandchildren, Aaron and Justin Sperbeck; a niece, Dawn Manchester, of Richmondville; special cousins, Ester Franqui and Betty Douglas; many other cousins and close friends.
He was predeceased by two grandsons, Kenneth and Jared Brownell.
A funeral service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill, with the retired Rev. George I. Goodwin Jr. officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, before the service.
Spring interment will be in Richmondville Rural Cemetery.

Nellie K. Clapsaddle
COOPERSTOWN — Nellie K. Clapsaddle, 94, a longtime resident of Cooperstown, died Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006, at her Glen Avenue home surrounded by her family and friends.
Nellie was born Oct. 6, 1911, in Ilion. She was the daughter of Lewis A. and Florence (Fish) Clayton of Fly Creek.
Nellie attended school in Ilion and after the death of her mother moved to Cooperstown as a teenager to reside with her Aunt Nellie Brooks.
She was initially employed as a telephone operator but later did child care and still later was employed for many years at Ellsworth and Sill’s on Main Street.
She married Cooperstown native Myron E. Clapsaddle on June 17, 1933, in Cooperstown.
Nellie enjoyed "clubhikes" with Cap Smith through the Mohican Club and spending summer days with Myron and their son, Bart, at their camp on Otsego Lake.
She also loved to walk, and she did so with uncommon vigor. Many will remember seeing her walking all around the village, an activity she continued into her ninth decade. Reading to children at Bassett Hospital and soliciting for various charities also filled many of her hours.
Nellie was an active and involved member of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.
Nellie was predeceased by her husband, Myron, in 1993; two sisters, Harriet Clayton and Nina French; and by her brother, Richard Clayton.
She is survived by her son, Bart, and his wife, Jean, of Syracuse; her brother, Robert Clayton, of Denver; and two nieces and a nephew.
A memorial service celebrating Nellie’s life will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Sundar Samuel, pastor of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, officiating. Nellie’s family will be in attendance from 10 a.m. until the time of the service to receive friends.
Burial in the Fly Creek Cemetery will occur in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that those who so desire make contributions in Nellie’s memory to The "Capital Fund" of the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, 66 Chestnut St., Cooperstown, NY 13326, or to the Cooperstown Fire Department, PO Box 1, Cooperstown, NY 13326.
Arrangements are under the supervision of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
Grant Moore Peckham
ONEONTA — Grant Moore Peckham, 88, of Oneonta, formerly of Hancock, died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006, in A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta.
He was born Dec. 3, 1917, in Hancock, the son of Howard and Isa (Moore) Peckham.
Grant was a 1938 HCS graduate and ran a farm on Sands Creek for many years.
He and Beatrice Frosch were married June 6, 1953, in Hancock. Bea predeceased him Jan. 7, 2003.
Grant also worked for Bard Parker as a tool and die machinist until his retirement in 1983.
He was a member of the Hancock Masonic Lodge F&AM, where he served as chaplain.
Grant is survived by two sons, Grant Howard and his wife, Janine, of Alexandria, Va., and Fred and his companion, Cheryl Korotky, of Hancock; Marcia Leab, his daughter, also survives along with her husband, Derrick. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Jenny Peckham, of Bradenton, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Richard and Steven Peckham of Alexandria, Va.; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Grant was predeceased by his brother, Harlan; and sister, Ethel Carpenter; a son, Matthew; and a niece, Barbara Bartholomew.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, at the Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Chapel, Hancock, with Lay Preacher Pam Allen officiating.
Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, Hancock.
