Elsie A. Felske

ROSCOE — Elsie A. Felske of Roscoe, died on Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2005, at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. She was 93.

Elsie was born in White Sulphur Springs, on May 30, 1912, to the late Arthur and Florence Bull LaPolt.

She was the widow of Albert Felske.

Elsie had taken teacher training at the State University College of Technology at Delhi and taught at the former Russell Brook School in the town of Colchester. She had also worked from 1937 to 1950 as a forelady in an assembly plant, and then from 1950 to 1958 as a waitress in a local restaurant in Liberty, and also at the Miss Monticello Diner in Monticello. She attended the Roscoe Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by one sister, Evelyn Crumley of Kenai, Alaska; a close friend, Glenda Wensley of Wallkill; one special nephew, Robert Felske and wife Muriel of Sidney; and special nieces, Grace Engard and husband Harold and June Filo and husband Matt, all of Binghamton. She is also survived by several other nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son, Thomas Arthur Crumley; five brothers, Arthur, Maurice, Gerald, John and Wilbur LaPolt; and one sister, Florence Aumick.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 26, at Ramsay’s Funeral Homes Inc., 275 South Main Street, Liberty.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Randall Ruppart officiating.

Interment will be next to her husband Albert in Evergreen Cemetery, Route 17 B, Bethel.

It was Elsie’s wish that memorial donations be made to the Roscoe Presbyterian Church, Old Route 17, Roscoe, NY 12776.

Arrangements are by Ramsay’s Funeral Home, Liberty.

Kenneth A. (Ike) Merwin Sr.

GILBOA — Kenneth A. (Ike) Merwin Sr., 74, a longtime area resident of Gilboa, died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

He was born Sept. 29, 1931, in Delhi, son of Guy Richard and Flossie (Hiliker) Merwin.

Ike was married to Jean M. Jackson on July 4, 1955, at Allentown, Pa.

He served in the United States Air Force. Ike drove tractor-trailer and worked for McBride Trucking and for the past 20 years for Hauser Trucking, Watevliet, before retiring.

Ike was a member of the Conesville American Legion Post 1764. He played baseball at Gilboa High School and for several area town teams. He liked to throw horseshoes and had a coin collection.

He is survived by his wife, Jean M. Merwin of Gilboa; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth A. and Ann Merwin and Michael and Lisa Merwin; four daughters and sons-in-law, Debora and David Smith, Jackie and Thomas Briggs, Cathy and James Marold and Susie and Kenneth A. Utter; two sisters, Pauline Collins and Carol Miller; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Richard and George Merwin.

Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30, at the Gilboa Methodist Church, Gilboa, with the Rev. Martha Vink, officiating.

Spring burial will be in Manorkill Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Donations may be made to the Ambulance Fund of the Conesville Fire Department, in memory of Kenneth A. Merwin Sr.

Arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Gladys Bommer

OKMULGEE, Okla. — Gladys Bommer, 92, of Okmulgee, Okla., and a former Cooperstown resident, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2005, at Rebold Manor Nursing Home in Okmulgee.

She was born Jan. 31, 1913, on Staten Island, the daughter of the late Joseph Augustus and Caroline Mae Cozine LaTourette. She was a descendant of Jean LaTourette, an early French Huguenot settler on Staten Island in the 1690s.

She and her late husband, George, who she married on Feb. 28, 1937, on Staten Island, owned and operated Bommer’s Bakery in Port Richmond from 1940 to 1956. She attended Immanuel Lutheran Church in New Springville, Staten Island.

George died in 1987. Gladys lived in Cooperstown from 1987 to 2001. She moved to Oklahoma in 2002 with her son Edward. While in Cooperstown, she was a volunteer at Bassett Healthcare. Her hobbies included reading and needlepoint. She attended Evangelical Lutheran Church at Hartwick Seminary.

She is survived by two sons, Edward of Okmulgee and Fred Bommer of White Haven Pa.; a daughter, Doris Yeager of Middletown, N.J.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, at the Immaculate Lutheran Church, Staten Island, with the Rev. Mindy Harris officiating.

Interment will be in the Oceanview Cemetery, Staten Island.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Evangelical Lutheran Church, 4636 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are by the Matthew Funeral Home Inc., 2508 Victory Bouvelard at Willowbrook Road, Staten Island, NY 10314.

Norma I. Shumway-Martin

SIDNEY — Norma I. Shumway-Martin, 72, of Sidney died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2005, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

She was born Dec. 26, 1932, in Oneonta, the daughter of John and Rose Simmons.

Norma married Freemont Martin in Bainbridge.

She had a love of jewelry, pink nail polish, country music and Elvis.

Norma is survived by her four daughters, Donna Decker and her husband, David Jr. of Worcester, Jacqueline Fuller of Endwell, Janet and June; her husband, Freemont Martin of Bainbridge; grandchildren Jimmy, Alicia, Justin, Jennifer, Stephanie, Stacey, Amanda, Chucky, Ellarose, Melissa, Natasha and Crystal; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a grandson, Timothy; and her first husband, Arnold Shumway.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 24, at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

Private funeral services will be at the convenience of the family.

Burial will be in the spring in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Oneonta Salvation Army, 25 River St., Oneonta, NY 13820, in loving memory of Norma I. Shumway-Martin.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

Edward Tibor Egervari

DAVENPORT — Edward Tibor Egervari, 73, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

Tibor was born in Sopron, Hungary, and came to the United States in 1969. He worked in New Rochelle as a building superintendent from 1974 until his retirement in 1998. After retiring, he relocated to live full time in Davenport.

Tibor is survived by his wife, Maria, and stepchildren, Szilvia Toth, Krisztina Toth and Peter Molnar and family.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Steven Moore, at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 28, at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Stamford.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Eunice Thompson Champlin

STAMFORD — Eunice Thompson Champlin, 94, went to the Lord after a short illness, Dec. 23, 2005, at Robinson Terrace in Stamford.

She was born in White Sulpher Springs on Oct. 13, 1911. She lived most of her young life in Corbett, graduated from Downsville High School in 1929, and the Brooklyn School of Nursing in 1931.

Eunice is survived by her three children, Barbara Craig and her husband, Donald, of Harpersfield, Raymond Bruce Champlin of Harpersfield, and Wallace Champlin and his wife, Roberta of St. George, Utah. She has nine grandchildren, Joanne Park of Lakewood, Colo., James Craig of Stamford, Gail Edelen of Bokeelia, Fla., Kathleen Craig of Harpersfield, Raymond M. Champlin of Sidney, Douglas Champlin of Long Beach, Randall Champlin of Las Vegas, Nev., Debi Champlin of Draper, Utah, and Catherine Champlin of St. George, Utah.; also surviving are 11 great-grandchildren, who all called her "Gee Gee."

She loved all of them unconditionally and took great joy in being with her entire family, and they will miss her greatly.

Eunice was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

She was a registered nurse and X-ray technician who worked for Dr. Duell in Jefferson, Bathgate Hospital and the Stamford Medical Center. She was also a great tractor driver for her husband, Ray, during harvest time on the farm on Titus Hill.

She loved to cook and during her retirement years became well-known for her cookies, fudge and peanut brittle which she passed out liberally to her family and all over town.

She always loved camping with Ray and had beautiful flower gardens and productive vegetable gardens.

Eunice was an active member of the Col. Harper Grange and the Stamford-Harpersfield Senior Citizens, where she served as an officer on the county board. She was an active and generous member of the Stamford United Methodist Church for 50 years.

Eunice was a tireless creator of knitted and crocheted goods. She made crocheted lambs for her grandchildren and countless afghans and lap afghans for family and for the veterans and the residents of Robinson Terrace.

She loved sports, especially baseball, and had wonderful memories of her attendance at spring training games in Tucson, Ariz., with Joanne and Gail.

After she moved back to New York, she seldom missed a Yankee game on television.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 42 years in 1975; her sisters, Myrtle and Vera; and her daughter-in-law, Donna.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Stamford United Methodist Church in her memory.

Friends may call between 6 and 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005, at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford. A funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Lawrence Charles officiating.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 20, 2006, at the Stamford United Methodist Church, with the interment to follow in the Evergreen Cemetery in Jefferson.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Charles E. Vermilyea Jr.

SIDNEY CENTER — Charles E. Vermilyea Jr., 70, of Sidney Center entered into rest peacefully Saturday, Dec. 24, 2005, surrounded by his beloved family after a long and brave battle with lung cancer.

Charles was born June 26, 1935, in Cannonsville, son of Charles E. Vermilyea Sr. and Ruth E. (Backus) Vermilyea.

He is survived by his beloved children, two daughters and one son, Mr. and Mrs. Douglas and Debra Feidler of Walton, Mr. and Mrs. David and Elnora Jordan of Sidney Center, and Mr. Ronald C. Vermilyea of Sidney Center. Also surviving are his two sisters and one brother, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar and Beverly Watson of Hamden, Mr. and Mrs. Gary and Kathie Foster of Sidney Center, Mr. and Mrs. David and Sarah Vermilyea of Cary, S.C.; his beloved grandchildren, Rich, Travis, Katrina, Lisa, Brendon, Rachael, Heidi, Nicholas and Kimberly; four great-grandchildren, Brent, Dawson, Dustin and Hailee; special nieces, Mrs. Patti Colone of Delaware, Ms. Lani Harder of Unadilla; one aunt, Margaret Ford of Afton; several cousins, nieces and nephews; and beloved members of the Sidney Center Fire Department.

Charles was predeceased by his beloved wife of 36 years, Dorothy L. (Hunt) Vermilyea; his father, Charles E. Vermilyea Sr.; his mother, Ruth E. (Backus) Vermilyea; and two granddaughters, Melissa Sue Jordan and Fawn Sheree Roloson.

Charles was employed by the Town of Sidney Highway Department for 20 years, retiring in 1998.

Charles was a past chief and 53-year member of the Sidney Center Fire Department.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005, with a memorial service by the Sidney Center Fire Department at 8 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel in Sidney.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005, at C.H. Landers Funeral Home in Sidney, Pastor Kip Stratton officiating.

Burial will be in the Highland Hills Cemetery, Sidney Center, in the spring.

Contributions in Charles’ name can be made to the Catskill Area Hospice or the Sidney Center Fire Department.

Marion J. Beecher

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Marion J. Beecher, 94, of Main Street passed away Sunday morning, Dec. 25, 2005, in the Otsego Manor, Cooperstown.

She was born May 2, 1911, in Whitehall, daughter of the late Elmer and Fannie Lyon Brownell.

Marion was raised in Whitehall and was educated in Granville schools.

On June 20, 1936, she was united in marriage with Leslie W. Beecher at the family home in Whitehall. A loving union of 46 years, Mr. Beecher preceded her in death Nov. 14, 1982.

Marion and her husband came to Richfield Springs in 1942, from Granville, and she had resided here since.

She had a strong belief in God and was a member of the Schuyler Lake Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Mrs. Beecher was a devoted homemaker and mother. Her family came first and foremost. She was always there for them whether they were good times or bad. She will be truly missed.

Surviving are one son, Harold Beecher of Milford; a daughter, Ann J. Beecher of Richfield Springs; three grandchildren, Jason and his companion, Heather, Joshua Beecher and Tiffany Beecher; one great-granddaughter, Emma Jade Beecher; two nieces, Sally Larrow of South Glens Falls and Diane Mylotte of Clifton Park.

Besides her parents and husband, Leslie, four sisters, Grace Mylotte, Hazel Stevens, Gladys Bartholomew and Gertrude Mellon, predeceased her.

A memorial service will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, in Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, State Route No. 28, Schuyler Lake. Frank Merrifield, Presiding Overseer of the Congregation, will officiate.

Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

There are no calling hours.

Expressions of sympathy may be made with donations to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Schuyler Lake, NY or the Catskill Area Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the memorial service.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.
