Robert L. R. Ward

NEW BERLIN — Robert L. R. Ward, 73, of West Hill Road in New Berlin passed away peacefully Sept. 23, 2005, in the Gilmour Health Care Facility in Norwich.

Born Feb. 13, 1932, on the family farm in Edmeston, Robert was the son of Cyrus and Sarah (Rogers) Ward.

He helped at home for many years before working at Webb & Sons in New Berlin. Robert then worked at Welch’s Livestock Market in West Edmeston, where he remained for more than 45 years.

He will be remembered for his calm and quiet nature.

Robert is survived by a son, Robert L. Ward of Pageland, S.C.; a daughter, Merrie Horton of Norwich; a sister, Isabelle Culver of Edmeston; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Danny, Gene and John.

Memorial services for Robert will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2005, at the Second Baptist Church in Edmeston.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions in memory of Robert may be made to either the Gilmour Health Care Facility, 88 Calvary Drive, Norwich, NY 13815 or to the American Cancer Society.

The arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Funeral Home in Norwich.

Natalie Dezaro

FLUSHING — Natalie Dezaro, 81, of Flushing and formerly of Fleischmanns passed away Monday, Sept. 19, 2005, at her residence in Flushing.

She was born in New York City on Aug. 21, 1924, the daughter of Harry Shumilok and Frances Frantz.

Natalie married Alexander Dezaro on March 3, 1950. He died Aug. 11, 1991. Natalie had a seasonal home in Fleischmanns with her late husband, Alexander, for years.

She worked at the World Trade Center for 30 years for Fiduciary Trust Company.

She enjoyed art museums, art shows and Broadway shows.

Natalie is survived by one sister, Ellen Richardson, Troy; one niece, Karen and Darren Bianco, Troy; and one grandniece, Madison Bianco, Troy.

She was predeceased by her husband and one son.

Calling hours will be from 10 a.m. until the service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2005, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. R.L. Donahue officiating.

Burial will be in Bedell Cemetery, Fleischmanns.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Harold W. Roberts

KERHONKSON — Harold W. Roberts Jr., 64, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2005, at his residence.

Harold was born Sept. 11, 1941, in New Kingston, the son of Harold W. Roberts Sr. and Achsh Miller.

He never married. He was a longtime resident of Kerhonkson.

Harold was the senior mail clerk at the New York State Department of Corrections, Kerhonkson, Ulster County.

Harold is survived by his sisters, Evelyn Roberts, Charleston, S.C., and Nora Mestyanek, Grand Gorge; and by nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one brother, Reginald Roberts, 2001.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2005, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, 2005, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Burial will be in the Halcott Cemetery, Halcott Center.

Contributions in memory of Harold W. Roberts Jr., may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Ambrose DeMoise

DONAHUE, Iowa — Ambrose "Bud" DeMoise, 73, of Donahue, Iowa, formerly of South Kortright, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005, at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus in Davenport, Iowa.

He was born Jan. 13, 1932, the son of Ambrose W. (Sr.) and Anna DeMoise.

He married Vada Domino in 1973 in Portland, Maine.

Mr. DeMoise had been an over-the-road truck driver, retiring in 1978. He enjoyed woodworking.

Survivors include his wife, Vada, of Donahue, Iowa; four sons, Bobby, Larry, Donnie and Billy DeMoise; five grandchildren; and one sister, Marian Kelly.

In accordance with Mr. DeMoise’s wishes, after cremation, there will be no visitation or services.

The Runge Mortuary & Crematory is assisting the family with final arrangements.

Carmela M. Baldo

ONEONTA — Carmela M. (Millie) Baldo, 72, of Oneonta passed away Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.

Millie was born the daughter of Joseph and Tesi (Angellotti) Amatucci.

For more than 30 years, Millie owned and operated a business on the corner in West Oneonta. It started as a grocery store; was converted to include a snack bar; then to a restaurant called "Pacesetter’s;" and finally to a tavern called "Millie’s Place" for her local friends to congregate.

Millie was an avid sports fan, especially of the New York Yankees. Over the years she sponsored a softball team and a billiards team. Millie loved to share her time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her brother, Amilio "Sonny" and his wife, Kathleen "Kay" Amatucci, of Oneonta; sister-in-law, Lena Amatucci of Brooklyn; four nieces, Joanne and her husband, Paul Parouse, of Brooklyn, Lisa and her husband, Stan Costigliacci, of Brooklyn, Gina Amatucci and her husband, Bernard Mater, of Germany, and Kathleen and her husband, Brett Bentley, of Westford; eight grandnieces; one grandnephew; several cousins; and her many friends.

She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Tesi (Angellotti) Amatucci; her brother, James Amatucci; her first husband, Donald T. Cetta; and her second husband, George A. Baldo.

Friends may call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta in the evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2005, at which time the family will be in attendance.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2005, in St. Mary’s Church with the Rev. Joseph Benintende, pastor officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820-1319.

Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Thomas E. Lavell

WALTON — Thomas E. Lavell, M.D., 77, of Walton passed away Sunday evening at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, after a sudden illness.

Dr. Lavell was born in New York City on June 2, 1928, the son of the late Thomas and Kathleen MacDonald Lavell Sr.

Dr. Lavell married Jeanne Hoeko on April 23, 1988, in Walton.

He served his country as a lieutenant in the Navy as a flight surgeon, from 1954-1957.

Dr. Lavell was a graduate of Cornell University with a B.A., New York University Medical School with an M.D., and Russell Sage Graduate School with an M.S. in Public Administration. He interned at St. Vincent’s Hospital, NYC, United States Navy School of Aviation Medicine, had a residency in Family Practice at the University of Colorado, and was a resident of general surgery at the University of Vermont.

He was licensed as a medical doctor in New York state, a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners, a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Lavell was presently a field representative for the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations; a board of trustee member of O’Connor Hospital, Delhi; American Cancer Society, Eastern Division, and past president of the New York State Division; past president of Health Systems Agency of Northeast New York; a past member of the Bassett Healthcare Domestic Violence Research Project; and past medical director of Margaretville Hospital, Delaware Valley Hospital and Delaware County Medical Services.

He was former interim president and CEO of Delaware Valley Hospital, consultant, New York State Department of Health Office of Professional Medical Conduct, and a member of the Medical Advisory Committee of the Planned Parenthood of Delaware and Otsego Counties.

He was a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Medical Society of the State of New York and the Society of US Naval Flight Surgeons. Dr. Lavell was also a clinical assistant professor of surgery, State University of New York Upstate Health Science Center, and an adjunct faculty, health administration, Russell Sage Graduate School.

Dr. Lavell loved to teach and mentor students. He also loved to provide medical care to indigent people in Malawi, Central Africa, and at USPHS Indian Service Hospitals serving the Navaho and Sioux-Arapaho peoples.

He was once described by one of his colleagues as an "incredible healer."

He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Lavell; three sons, Thomas E. Lavell III of Frankfurt, Germany, Christopher Lavell and his wife, Cindy, of Goshen, and Patrick Lavell and his wife, Sarah, of Rochester; his daughter, Melissa Whipple and children of Middletown; two stepchildren, Brooke Taber of Burlington, Vt., and Tye Taber of Salt Lake City, Utah; six grandchildren, Michael, Emily, Justin Thomas, Alex, Margot and Camille; three cousins, Jim Murphy of Nevada, Bill Murphy of Idaho and Melissa Murphy of Montana.

Friends and relatives are invited to call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, 2005, at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton, where services will be at 8 p.m., with the Rev. R.L. Donahue, officiating.

Neva Irene Holdredge

COOPERSTOWN — Neva Irene Holdredge, 81, died Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, at The Otsego Manor, Cooperstown, where she had been a resident since June 2003.

Born April 7, 1924, in Redfield, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Frances (Lago) LaRock.

In August 1945, she married George W. Holdredge, who predeceased her.

She and George lived in Guilford for 52 years until they moved to Oneonta in June 2000.

She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church of Guilford and the Guilford Fire Department Auxiliary.

Over the years, she participated in numerous church, civic and charitable activities and was always there to lend a helping hand to her neighbors and friends in need.

Public recognition of her good deeds was bestowed on her when she was named Guilford Citizen of the Year at a ceremony in May 2000.

A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Neva took pride in her home and once proclaimed that "she loved housework." She was a good cook and enjoyed baking sweet treats for her family and friends. She grew beautiful house plants and flowers with a fondness for African violets. She enjoyed playing cards, especially Oxford Pitch, and was a formidable opponent.

People enjoyed her great sense of humor and infectious laugh. Sitting on her front porch, dressed as a witch and passing out candy to children at Halloween was one of her favorite yearly activities that became well-known in the community.

Neva is survived by her children, Brenda J. Tallman and her husband, Roger, South Carolina; Jill E. Filow and her husband, Kenneth, Liverpool; G. Thomas Holdredge and his wife, Loretta, Oneonta; Beth A. Lembo, and her husband, David, Oneonta; grandchildren, Lisa A. Royce, Ohio, Matthew P. Filow, Georgia, Philip T. Holdredge, Oneonta, and Cassandra M. Lembo, Oneonta; two great-grandchildren, Katelyn J. and Cameron J. Royce, Ohio; her sister, Genevieve Cummings, Norwich; and several nieces and nephews and their extended families.

She was predeceased by an identical twin daughter to Brenda, Mary Frances, who died at birth; two brothers, Earl and Carl LaRock; and two sisters, Leila LaRock and Betty Deiss.

Friends may call at the Robert J. Fahy Funeral Home, 116 North Broad St., Norwich, from 10 to 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 1, 2005. Funeral services will follow, conducted by Father Glenn Mahaffey, Rector of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Norwich.

Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Norwich, at the convenience of the family.

Those wishing to celebrate Neva’s life may do so by contributing or volunteering to their favorite church, cause or charity or by doing something kind and unexpected for a friend or neighbor.

William Rynack

ANDES — William Michael Henry "Bill" Rynack, 84, died peacefully in his home in the town of Andes, with his granddaughter/daughter, Cynthia Cahill Taylor, by his side Monday, Sept. 26, 2005.

Bill was born March 26, 1921, in Brooklyn. He attended Brooklyn Technical High School and then Steven’s Institute of Technology.

He married Marie "Honey" Wellman in 1941, and lost her after 33 years of marriage.

He served his country during World War II on the USS Lackawanna as well as the USS Rigel. After the war he was an instructor at several naval training schools including Great Lakes, Mich., San Diego, Calif., Norfolk Va., and New London, Conn.

He was honorably discharged in May 1948 and then completed his higher education at Columbia University. While attending Columbia, he worked for Bethlehem Steel and American Can Company. In 1953, he started as a professor at New York City Community College, "City Tech" at the Jay Street Campus, Brooklyn. There he was active with the student body, serving as several advisers but most memorably as the rifle team head coach for many years.

Bill also remained very active with the professional organizations and politics. He actively lobbied several education bills in the New York state legislature and was selected as the Society of Manufacturing Engineering and Numerical Control Society Man of the Year in 1969.

During the 1960s, the family moved to Nyack where Bill was active in the conservative and Republican parties, as well as many community-based organizations.

In 1970, Bill was selected to bring Numerical Control to India. He received many awards for his work in industrializing that nation.

In 1976, Bill married his current wife of 29 years, Jean Augur Farrell, and they retired to their mountaintop in May 1981.

Bill led a very active retired life. He was a member of the Andes Planning and Zoning boards, a post commander for American Legion Post No. 216, a member of the Andes and New Kingston Grange, the Arena Fire Department, and a Sunday school teacher, usher and the beloved "lollypop" man for Sacred Heart Church.

He remained an avid outdoorsman and animal lover.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, 2005, at the Sacred Heart Church, Margaretville, followed by a reception at the Purcell Center to celebrate Bill’s life.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Bill’s memory to the North Shore Animal League or the Delhi Humane Society.
