Joseph H. Lapine
OTEGO — Joseph H. Lapine, 15, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Aug. 13, 2005, at his home.
He was born May 17, 1990, in Cooperstown, the son of Joseph W. and Annette K. (Fancher) Lapine.
Joe was a student at the Unatego Junior and Senior High School. This September he would have entered the ninth grade.
He was a wonderful guy who loved and was loved by his family and many friends. Joe especially enjoyed his animals, music and life. He had a great sense of humor and loved joking and making people laugh. He will be dearly missed.
He is survived by his parents, Joseph and Annette Lapine of Otego; his sisters, Amber and her husband, Paul Francis, of Otego, Tanya Hamilton of Cooperstown and Kathleen Lapine of Otego; a niece, Charisma K. Francis; a nephew, Jordan Hamilton; his grandmother, Shirley Echhorn of Laurens; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Cremation took place at the Hillington Crematory. Calling hours will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta, on Friday, Aug. 19, 2005. The memorial service will start at noon with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, chaplain at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Otego Emergency Squad, PO Box 467, Otego, NY or the Joe Lapine Memorial Fund, care of Unatego Junior and Senior High School, 2641 state Highway 7, Otego, NY 13825.

Neva Mae Utter
ONEONTA — Neva Mae Utter, 98, of Oneonta passed away peacefully Monday, Aug. 15, 2005, at the home of her daughter, Joyce, in Salem, Va., where she had resided for the last three years.
She was born May 2, 1907, in Unadilla, the daughter of Henry Curtis and Leora Mae (Hopkins) Steenrod.
She married Albert E. Utter on Aug. 30, 1926, in the Otego Methodist/Episcopal Church, Otego, by the Rev. W.H. Alger. Mr. Utter predeceased her March 13, 1991.
Mae was an animal lover, especially of dogs. She enjoyed cooking and baking, tending to her house plants, playing cards with her family, sitting and talking about Jesus and most of all spending time with her family, especially the grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Mae is survived by her children and their spouses, Lavern A. and Jeri Utter of Greenfield, Richard D. and Betty Utter of Otego, Carl W. and Beatrice Utter of Otego, Joyce E. and Lewis Martin of Salem, Va., and Linda I. and Duane Bliss of Gilbertsville; daughter-in-law, Betty Utter of Palmetto, Fla.; 28 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Ada A. Flynn of A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta; two sisters-in-law, Ella Steenrod and Evelyn Steenrod, both of A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta; as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her son, Alvin C. Utter; two brothers, Stewart C. and Emmons Steenrod; and four sisters, Sarah Steenrod, Irma B. Sullivan, Irene Colgrove and Albertina Barnwell.
Funeral services for Neva Mae Utter will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, 2005, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with her grandson, Douglas Martin, pastor of the Life Community Church, Christiansburg, Va., officiating. Burial will follow in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.
Calling hours will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2005, in the funeral home.
Flowers will be accepted, but those wishing to make a memorial donation may make them to General Shepherd Hospice, 6045 Peters Creek, Roanoke, VA 24019 in loving memory of Neva Mae Utter.
The family would like to extend a very special thank you to the General Shepherd Hospice for all of their caring and support they gave to Mae and her family.

Esther Decker May
NELLISTON — Mrs. Esther L. Decker May, 77, of Stone Arabia Street, Nelliston, passed away Monday morning, Aug. 15, 2005, at the Palatine Nursing Home.
She was born in DeLancey on Aug. 6, 1928, the daughter of Anton Yaeger and Lucy Belle Rosa Yaeger.
Mrs. May was a graduate of Mount Upton Central School, class of 1946.
Mrs. May started out as a horse trainer at the farm of Phyllis Noyes in Kenwood Station. After that, she became a horse trainer at the Jack Bailey’s Stables in Vernon.
After suffering a stroke in 1973, she and her first husband then managed The Historical General Cochran’s Farm in Palatine Bridge.
She was a local area resident since the mid 1970s. She lived in Kenwood Station, Vernon and Afton and spent many years traveling with horses throughout the United States.
She was of the Protestant faith.
She enjoyed working with horses and loved watching birds at her bird feeder.
She married Ralph G. May on April 4, 1981, in St. Johnsville. He predeceased her Oct. 16, 2004.
She was also predeceased by one son, David L. Decker, March 1970; one daughter, Elizabeth Carolyn Mabie; four brothers, Wesley, Richard, Theodore and Harold Yaeger; three sisters, Mary Gohl, Lucy Belle and Lena Poss; and two grandchildren, Karen M. Decker, 2002, and David R. Lanphere, 2002.
Mrs. May is survived by three daughters, Beverly J. Lanphere of Brewerton, Linda L. Winnie of Warnerville and Ruth Ellen May of Canajoharie; four sons, Donald "Butch" Decker of Vernon, James May of Nelliston, Stan May of Oneonta and Michael May of Fort Plain; two brothers, Lawrence Yaeger of Saratoga Springs and Roger Yaeger of San Antonio, Texas; six sisters, Betty Logan of Afton, Ethel Sheldon of Canada, Joann Crosby of Nineveh, Joyce Sprunger of Roanoke, Ind., Rita Cutting of Walton and Patty Davy of Dolton; 20 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and numerous faithful friends.
Family will receive friends and relatives from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, 2005, at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie.
A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 19, 2005, at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Cheryl Kenwood Cemetery in Oneida.

Catherine Oliver
SIDNEY CENTER — Catherine Oliver, 66, of Sidney Center passed away unexpectedly Monday, Aug. 15, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.
She was born April 16, 1939, in New York City, the daughter of the late Benjamin and Anna Krawchuk Trelewicz.
She married LeRoy E. Oliver on Dec. 13, 1958, in New York City. He predeceased his wife Jan. 8, 2005.
Catherine was a registered day-care provider in Sidney Center.
She is survived by her daughter, Laura Oliver and Carl Safford of Sidney Center; two sons, Eric Oliver of Sidney Center and Evan and Charlie Jo Oliver of Sidney Center; brother, Robert and Debbie Trelewicz of Connecticut; and four grandchildren, Caitlin Oliver, Justin Safford, Alexander Oliver and Justice Eggleston. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends are invited to call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, 2005, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.
A Mass of Christian burial will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, 2005, at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Liberty Street, Sidney, with the Rev. Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be at her family’s convenience in the Highland Cemetery, Sidney Center.

Howard E. Clink Sr. and Mary J. Clink
ONEONTA — A committal service for Howard Sr. and Mary Clink will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery with Maj. Joy Blanchard of The Salvation Army officiating. Military honors will be presented by the Oneonta American Legion Post 259.

Helen S. McMullen
LAURENS — Helen S. McMullen, 59, of Laurens passed away Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.
She was born May 28, 1946, in Oneonta, the daughter of James and Katherine (Jester) Seeber.
She married Mitchell E. McMullen on June 26, 1966, in Laurens.
For more than 40 years, Helen has been an area beautician, and since 1972, has owned and operated a shop in Laurens, where she will be fondly remembered as good friend to all her customers.
She was a member of the Laurens Presbyterian Church, and was serving as treasurer.
Helen loved to sew and was an avid quilter. She enjoyed her family and especially cherished the times spent with her husband, children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Mitchell E. McMullen of Laurens; her children, Tabatha (John) Carrigan of Laurens and Jesse James McMullen of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; her four grandchildren, Brian Demming and Mitchell, Sean, and Lindsey Carrigan; her sisters, Betty (Leland) Scott of Schenevus, Dorothy (Harry) Walke of Schenevus and Kay (Paul) Cooper of Berkley Springs, W.Va.; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service to celebrate the life of Helen will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, 2005, at the Laurens Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Harry Myers, pastor, officiating. Immediately after Helen’s celebration of life, there will be a reception and coffee hour in the church annex to which everyone is welcomed.
Contributions in Helen’s memory may be made to the Laurens Presbyterian Church.

Beverly A. Hoot
MARYLAND — A celebration for Col. Beverly A. Hoot, 73, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, at the Word of Faith Christian Family Center, 6568 state Highway 7, Maryland.
A luncheon will follow at 2 p.m. at the VFW 2752, Schenevus.
Beverly served her country for 37 years, retiring as a distinguished military officer.
Beverly passed away Feb. 13, 2005, in St. Petersburg, Fla., after a long battle with cancer.
Janice Marie Rich
FAIRPORT — Janice Marie Rich passed away Aug. 14, 2005.
Janice was born July 24, 1959, in Stamford and moved to the Rochester area in 1974.
She studied music at Hartwick College in Oneonta and received her bachelor’s degree in music at the State University of Geneseo. She later received her master’s degree in music at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester.
Janice dedicated her life to music and to sharing it with others through teaching and conducting.
She was predeceased by her father, Howard K. Rich.
She is survived by her mother, Annette R. Rich. Also surviving are her brothers, Robert S. Rich of Dover, Pa., Stephen H. Rich of Auburn and John W. Rich of Hobart, and their spouses. She is also survived by nieces and nephews, Christine, Jessica, Stephen, Samantha, Darcie, Joshua and Jordan.
A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 26 East Church St., Fairport.

Gerald W. Davis
NORWICH — Gerald W. Davis, 55, of Norwich and formerly of Cooperstown, passed away Wednesday morning, Aug. 17, 2005, at his home following a long battle with multiple myeloma.
Jerry was born Oct. 1, 1949, in Troy, a son of Edwin and Florence (Donnelly) Davis.
He married Mary Matthews on June 16, 1973, at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Watervliet.
Raised in Troy, he graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1967. He entered the health-care field by attending Hudson Valley Community College, where he received an associate’s degree in X-ray technology in 1971. For a brief time he was employed at St. Mary’s Hospital in Troy, but returned to Hudson Valley Community College in 1975 and received an associate’s degree in nursing in 1977.
He returned to St. Mary’s Hospital and was also employed by GE in Niskayuna. In 1979, he attended the Veterans Administration School in Albany, received a nurse anesthetist certificate in 1981, then moved to New Bern, N.C., where he was employed by the Craven County Community Hospital.
In April of 1982, Jerry and his family moved to Cooperstown where he was employed at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital as a nurse anesthetist. In 1991, he joined the staff at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta and then moved in October of 1995, from Cooperstown to Spartanburg, S.C., where he was employed by the Mary Black Hospital.
In 1996, the Davis family returned to their home on Delaware Street in Cooperstown, and in 1999, he began employment with Delf O. King in association with Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich. Since September of 2001, Jerry and Mary have resided on Gerald Street in Norwich.
Currently a member of the parish family of Church of the Holy Apostles in Norwich, he was formerly a communicant of St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown. He was also a member of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.
While Jerry’s career was a large part of his life, his devotion to his family and home was even more so. He enjoyed tinkering around the house and fixing whatever needed fixing. He also enjoyed fishing, especially when he and his family lived in Cooperstown and he could take their boat out onto Otsego Lake to fish.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 32 years, Mary of Norwich; their two daughters, Meagan M. Davis of Atlanta, Ga., and Kelly M. Davis of Lowell, Mass.; his mother and father, Florence and Edwin Davis of Troy; his mother and father-in-law, Mary and Charles Matthews of Watervliet; two sisters, Janet Palitsch and her husband, Matthew, of Rexford, and Sharon Weslowski and her husband, Dennis, of Troy; one brother, Glenn Davis and his wife, Debbie, of Tempe, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 22, 2005, at St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church, 31 Elm St., Cooperstown, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, presiding, assisted by Fr. Douglas Cunningham, pastor of Church of the Holy Apostles in Norwich.
Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, 82 Chestnut St., Cooperstown, from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday afternoon, Aug. 21, 2005, when Jerry’s family will be in attendance.
