Gloria Keoughan
STAMFORD — Gloria Margaret Keoughan (Reilly) died peacefully in her sleep Saturday, Aug. 13, 2005, after a brief battle with brain cancer.
She was born in New York City on Jan. 29, 1925, to Marguerite and Bernard Reilly. Gloria spent most of her life in New City, graduating from Congers High School (class of 1942).
Gloria married Ed Keoughan in 1943, and worked for Lederle Laboratories during the war and later as a secretary for the town of Clarkstown for more than 20 years.
She and her husband volunteered with a few of their friends to start and run the New City American Legion Band, a marching drum and bugle corps that competed throughout the country. She also gave her time at Camp Jawanio, working with cerebral-palsied children.
In 1985, when they retired and moved into the dream home they built in Stamford, Ed and Gloria continued their community involvement. Gloria was a member of the Legion Auxiliary, the Catholic daughters, and she sang in Sacred Heart’s caring choir. Her real passion was volunteer work. She spent hours helping out at the Core Thrift Shop on Main Street, Stamford, and at the Robinson Terrace Coffee Shop, where she made and served snacks and lunches for almost 20 years. She also served as secretary and treasurer for the latter.
Retirement, she and Ed had decided, did not mean not working, it just meant they did not get paid for their efforts — something that brought them both great joy and made Gloria beloved by family, friends and community alike.
This most-giving and gracious lady is survived by three daughters, Pat of Falmouth, Mass., Mary Keoughan-Pedersen of Oneonta, and Amy Wilson of Barre, Mass., as well as one granddaughter, Heather Trotto of Barre, Mass. She will also be missed by her sons-in-law, Tom Pedersen and Rand Wilson. She is also survived by her sister, Jean Tillinghast of Nyack; two sisters-in-law, Anne Natale and Adele Peruna of Rockland County; as well as many nieces and nephews. Moreover, her friends and neighbors at Whiting Hollow Lake will sorely miss this wonderful woman who opened her heart and home to them all.
Gloria’s family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005, at the Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2005, by Father Michael Cournoyer at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Stamford.
Contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, Cobleskill.
