Elaine F. Ludwig
NEW LISBON — Elaine Florence (Kalil) Ludwig, 63, died Saturday, July 30, 2005, at her home in New Lisbon.
She was born in Utica, the daughter of Joseph Kalil and Florence (Ferris) Kalil.
She was a graduate of St. Francis deSales High School in Utica. She was employed by AT&T as a program analyst in Manhattan, retiring in 1995.
She was married to Roy Ludwig on July 10, 1989, in Vernon, N.J. He died June 12, 2005.
She was of the Roman Catholic faith and had attended Holy Cross Church in Morris.
Elaine is survived by her sister, Maryellen Macrina of Dryden; her nephews, Joseph C. Macrina of Dryden and Christopher N. Macrina and wife Alissa of Huntersville, N.C.; as well as several dear friends.
She was predeceased by her husband and a brother-in-law, Joseph Macrina.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5, 2005, and the funeral service will commence at 6 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris with the Very Rev. John Burns officiating.
Cremation will take place at the Hillington Crematory in Morris.
A memorial funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Utica for both Roy and Elaine at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make donations to the Garrattsville Emergency Squad in her memory.
Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.
Carl A. Puylara Sr. and Sophia B. (Sobers) Puylara
ONEONTA — The committal ceremonies for Carl and Sophia will be held at noon Saturday, Aug. 6, 2005, in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, with the Rev. Steven Moore, associate pastor of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, officiating. Military honors will be presented by the Oneonta American Legion Post 259 for Carl and his younger brother, Leonard.
Sophia died Feb. 9, 2001, and Carl Sr. died Jan. 30, 2005.
Carl and Sophia were married for 53 years until Sophia’s death.
They both will be forever loved and missed.

Leonard A. Puylara
ONEONTA — The committal ceremony for Leonard A. Puylara (aka Christopher Scott) will be held at noon Saturday, Aug. 6, 2005, in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
Leonard died at his residence in Carson City, Nev., on Oct. 12, 2001.
He served in the United States Army during World War II.
Leonard worked in the entertainment industry as a dancer and choreographer. He is truly missed.

Marion Churchill
COBLESKILL — Marion B. Churchill, 90, died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2005, at Eden Park Healthcare Center in Cobleskill.
Mrs. Churchill was born Dec. 14, 1914, in Jefferson, the daughter of Ray and Elizabeth (Cummings) Briggs.
She was raised in Schenectady, married William G. Churchill on March 14, 1936, and moved back to Jefferson. Mrs. Churchill was employed as an outreach worker for Schoharie County Community Action Program in Richmondville. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Jefferson, where she taught Sunday school for 10 years. She was a member of the Leila Chapter of the Eastern Star in Jefferson and served as a Past Matron. She was a daughter of Eastern Star in the Onistagrawa Triangle of Schenectady. For many years she and her husband wintered at Good Samaritan Village in Kissimmee, Fla.
Survivors include her husband, William G. Churchill; their children, Joan and Jerry Diamond of Cobleskill and Richard and Rosalie Churchill of Catskill; two sisters, Ellen Soulia of Schenectady and Evelyn Koch of Winter Springs, Fla.; six grandchildren, Kathy Diamond-Brayton, William Diamond (Jo-Ann), Eric Diamond, Randy Churchill (Janis), Laura Churchill and husband James Hutchins and Brad Churchill (Tracy); and 13 great-grandchildren, Zak and Ali Brayton, Carly and Sylvi Diamond, Trevor and Hanna Diamond, Sam and Clara Churchill, Alex, Zoe and Charlotte Hutchins, and William and Anna Churchill.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, at the United Methodist Church in Jefferson with the Rev. Frank Adams officiating.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Jefferson.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church, Jefferson, NY 12093.

Mary Horan
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Graveside committal services for Mary (Marion Mulligan) Horan of Brentwood, Calif., and Richfield Springs will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Richfield Springs.
Mary was raised in Richfield Springs and graduated from Richfield high school. After her marriage to her husband Lon Horan, they raised their family in Cortland and Syracuse. She was widowed in 1947. At that time she joined her children in Brentwood, Calif., where she resided until her passing June 15, 2005, at the age of 90 years.
Mary is survived by her loving son, Ron and his wife, Carol; her loving daughter, Sandy Cahill of San Diego; her beloved brother, Robert Mulligan and his wife, Helen, of Fly Creek; and her nephews, Shawn, Robert and Michael, and niece Kathleen M. Byrd of Lampasas, Texas. Mary is also survived by her nephew, Tom Cantwell and wife Georgia of Springfield, and their daughter Amy and her husband, John Selover. She is loved in eternal life by her six adoring grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Donald M. Comins
CANAJOHARIE — Donald Martin Comins, 39, of Robinson Street, Canajoharie, died suddenly Monday, Aug. 1, 2005, at Albany Medical Center Hospital.
He was born in Cobleskill on Jan. 15, 1966, to Warren D. Comins and Lois Holmes Comins.
Don graduated from Canajoharie Central School in the class of 1984.
For the past two years, Don was dairy and frozen foods manager at Hannaford Brothers Company in Guilderland. Before that, he was the head of security for Hannaford Brothers Company for more than 16 years.
He was a lifelong area resident and member of the Canajoharie Reformed Church. Don was an avid New York Yankees fan and played baseball in the Hannaford Baseball League.
Don was a devoted father to his daughter, Jessica Dianne Comins of Davenport Center, and his son, Skyler Martin Comins of Lake Placid. He is also survived by his parents, Warren and Lois Comins of Canajoharie; his sister and brother-in-law, Dianne and Martin Barrett; his niece, Ruby Valentina Barrett of Portland, Ore.; his grandparents, Martin and Erma Holmes of Cobleskill; and aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie, officiated by the Rev. Kenneth Dingman.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5, at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Canajoharie Falls Cemetery, Canajoharie.
The family requests donations for the Comins children be made to: NBT Bank, FBO Jessica Comins and Skyler Comins, 24 Church St., Canajoharie.
James Pupecki
SCHUYLER LAKE — James "Mickey" Pupecki, 58, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2005, at Otsego Manor in Cooperstown.
He was born Sept. 5, 1946, in Herkimer, the son of Matthew Pupecki and Edith Lachut.
Mickey was a 1964 graduate of Richfield Springs Central School. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1965 and served the majority of his naval service on the USS New Jersey in Vietnam. He spent most of his life in Arizona and Florida employed as a construction worker. He returned to the Schuyler Lake area in 1999.
Survivors include his mother, Edith Lachut of Herkimer; sisters, Gloria Combs of Dryden, Cathy Crist and her husband Charles of Schuyler Lake; a niece; and three nephews.
He was predeceased by his father, Matthew Pupecki.
There will be no public services.
The family expressed their gratitude to the staff at Otsego Manor, specifically Country Meadows, for providing excellent care, and to the Richfield Springs Squad and Schuyler Lake First Responders.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
Hazel I. Plows
SIDNEY — Hazel I. Plows, 96, a resident of Sidney and Duryea, Pa., died Friday morning, July 29, 2005, at the Sidney Skilled Nursing Facility, Sidney.
She was the widow of Peirson H. Plows, who died Sept. 17, 1993.
She was born June 24, 1909, in Berwick, daughter of the late Ellery and Rose Schock Potter. She was a graduate of Duryea High School.
She was a homemaker and also was a bookkeeper for the former Ralph James Ford dealership, Duryea.
She was a member of the Brick United Methodist Church, Duryea, and its Women’s Society of Christian Service (WSCS).
Surviving are a daughter, Marilyn A. Players, R.N., and her husband, Peter, Sidney, with whom she resided; a son, the Rev. Keith Plows and wife Lois, Stockertown; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Players and wife Kim, Gwenda George and husband Christopher, Beth Munyan and husband John and Rodney Plows and wife Candace; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Harold, Ford, Kenneth and Donald Potter; and three sisters, Dorothy Sick, Ethlyn VanDemark and Evelyn Keeney; and a half sister, Ruth Jackson Conner.
There will be a memorial service at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, at the First Baptist Church, 28 River St., Sidney.

Joseph E. LeVeille
GOODYEAR LAKE — Joseph E. LeVeille, 89, of Goodyear Lake passed away peacefully at home Thursday, Aug. 4, 2005.
He was born Feb. 17, 1916, in Oneonta, the son of Joseph and Mae (Haslem) LeVeille.
Joseph married Marian B. Scott on May 28, 1949, in Niagara Falls. Marian predeceased him Feb. 4, 2003.
Joseph was a lifelong area resident. He worked for the D&H Railroad for many years, starting in the Market Street Freight office and later becoming a member of the Railroad Machinists Union. After his work for the railroad, Joseph worked for and retired from the City of Oneonta Public Works Department, where he was awarded the Key to the City.
Joseph was an avid outdoorsman. He was a past member of the Oneonta VFW Post 1206, the Moose Lodge, Milford Fish and Game Club and the CSEA Union.
He is survived by one son, Joseph and his wife, Patricia; two granddaughters, Shannon and her husband, Sean Stockdale, and Jessi LeVeille; one brother, James LeVeille and his wife, Eleanor; a niece, Linda and her husband, James Pearce; one great-nephew, Eric; and many special friends and neighbors.
Calling hours will be from 5 p.m. until the service time at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, 2005, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.
A memorial service will take place at the funeral home at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Mel Farmer, pastor of River Street Baptist Church, officiating.
Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

William W. West
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — William W. West, 80, longtime resident of Richfield Springs and more recently of Zephyrhills, Fla., passed away after a short illness Wednesday night, Aug. 3, 2005, in Mohawk Valley Nursing Home, Ilion.
He was born Nov. 12, 1924, in Schenevus, son of the late George and Grace VanBuren West. Bill was raised in Schenevus and graduated from Draper Central School in the class of 1943. For a short time he worked for the D&H Railroad before entering the United States Marine Corps in 1943. During World War II, he served in the South Pacific area in Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, Ryukyus Island and Okinawa. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
On Oct. 17, 1971, he was united in marriage with Harriett Broadbrook in Richfield Springs.
He worked for the New York Telephone Company for 40 years, retiring in 1986. After his retirement, Bill and Harriett moved to Zephyrhills, Fla. In Florida, Bill enjoyed working at various jobs, the last being a gate supervisor for the Florida Fair Association.
Bill played semi-professional baseball for more than 20 years for the Milford Macs under the leadership of Dean Windsor. The New York Yankees scouted him twice. Bill was an avid bowler, golfer, hunter, trapper and on his 78th birthday parachuted out of an airplane. He also enjoyed playing bingo with all of his friends and riding all the fast rides at amusement parks.
Bill had a strong sense of community. He was very active in political affairs and was a staunch Republican. He was elected and served on the Richfield Springs Village Board and Richfield Town Board. He also had served as mayor of Richfield Springs and supervisor of the town of Richfield.
He had a strong belief in God and was a member of the Schenevus Baptist Church. He was a member of the Richfield Springs Rotary Club, the Richfield Springs Emergency Rescue Squad, the Richfield Springs Volunteer Fire Department, the Marine Corps League, Ilion, Richfield Springs American Legion Post, Zephyrhills Elks Lodge BPOE and the Telephone Pioneers. He had also played in the Schenevus Drum Corps for 10 years. During his lifetime he took great pride in the fact that be had donated a total of five gallons of blood to the American Red Cross blood drives.
He was a friend to many and will never be forgotten.
Surviving him are his loving wife of 33 years, Harriett; two sons, George West of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Charles West and his companion, Susan Gardner, of Richfield Springs; two daughters and their husbands, Teresa and Larry Suhocki of Richfield Springs, Debra and Donald Schell of Oppenheim; a brother, Herbert and his wife, Irma West, of Jefferson; a daughter-in-law, Juanita Noble of Plant City, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Shaleen Dungey and her husband, Richard, of Sherburne; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Bill had many friends including Edward and Judith Schell of Oppenheim.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, George and Robert West; two sisters, Pauline Smith and Dorthea Brown; and his son, Dale H. Noble, 43, on July 10, 2004.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs. The Rev. James Hawver will officiate. There will be a gathering after the service at the Richfield Springs Veterans Club.
The family will be present to receive relatives and friends at J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Members of the Richfield Springs Fire Department are asked to meet at the funeral home at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday night for services. Members of Hugick, Purcell & Shepardson American Legion Post 616 are asked to meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday for services.
Bill will be laid to rest with military honors in Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla.
Memorial donations may be made to the Richfield Springs Fire Department toward the purchase of the Jaws of Life or the Richfield Springs Public Library. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
