He was born Nov. 11, 1928, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Arthur W. Petersen and Dorothy (Scholl) Petersen.
After attending public schools in Minneapolis and in Oconomowoc, Wis., he studied at Carleton College and at the University of Paris. After receiving his bachelor’s degree from Carleton, he pursued graduate study at the Universities of Indiana and Iowa and completed his M.F.A. in creative writing at Iowa in 1952.

In 1993, he retired as professor of English after teaching for 38 years at the State University College at Oneonta.
He was a lifelong exponent of humanistic thinking and formalism in poetry; he shared the view of one of his teachers, John Crowe Ransom, "that a man ought to write better than he speaks." And he asserted the following: "In a time when partly-formed verse is being widely published and praised, the attempt to write a finished poem may not be fashionable, but it is still worth making. Poetry must present not merely what one has observed with interest or amusement, not merely a bright array of words, but the things that a man has loved and hated and feared in his lifetime."
