William Butler Guiney Jr., M.D.
COOPERSTOWN — On the afternoon of Thursday, July 7, 2005, William Butler Guiney Jr., M.D., 57, peacefully passed away at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown with his family nearby.
Bill collapsed in cardiac arrest, probably from an electrolyte imbalance, on Saturday, July 2. His healthy body carried him through several crises in the following days. One of the gifts he left his family was his carefully worded living will.
While his father was a pilot for Peruvian Airlines, Bill was born in Lima, Peru, on July 6, 1948.
He grow up in Pittsburgh, Pa., and Day Village, Ohio, graduating from Day High School in 1966. He attended Cornell University and graduated with a B.A. in 1970. He then attended the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, where he met his future wife, Katharine Wait Lloyd. They married March 15, 1975, and in June of 1975, Bill received his M.D., a few seconds ahead of his wife, by virtue of alphabetical order.
They lived in Rochester as they continued their internships and residencies. Bill specialized in pathology, was chief resident and was certified by the American Board of Anatomic and Clinical Pathology.
In 1979, Bill and Kathy moved to Cooperstown, where he took the position of attending pathologist and assistant lab director at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, a position he held until his death. He served for many years as the director of the blood bank and served one term as the vice president of the medical staff at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital. During the past several years, he also served as the laboratory director for Bassett Healthcare Herkimer and Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County; laboratory assistant director for Bassett Healthcare Hamilton; tissue bank director at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital and Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County; and chairman of the Medical Staff By-Laws Committee. For many years he also served the town of Hartwick as health officer. Bill loved the challenge of his responsibilities and the opportunity to perform his work with precision and timeliness.
As an assistant professor of clinical pathology at Columbia Presbyterian College of Physicians and Surgeons, Bill enjoyed teaching at all levels, from high school students through residents and colleagues. He delighted in the chance to work with his son, Evan, last summer through a fellowship with the Bassett Research Institute. The author or co-author of many professional articles, Bill’s colleagues regarded him as an outstanding diagnostician and a gifted teacher.
Bill and Kathy lived with their two sons, Evan and Allan, at their home in rural Cooperstown. He loved spending time with his family. A dedicated father, he enjoyed coaching his sons’ soccer league teams, and was often seen as a timer on the finish line at their track meets and as a chaperone on school outings. He took deep pride in his sons’ many accomplishments as athletes, musicians, students and young adults.
He also enjoyed many outdoor sports, including hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, swimming and hunting with friends, with his father and most recently with his son, Allan. He also enjoyed tending the vegetable garden, while his wife worked on the flowers, and both enjoyed wild flowers and birdsongs.
Bill loved music in many forms. A supernumerary in several early operas, he and his family regularly attended Glimmerglass Opera productions, as well as other local arts performances, including Arby Productions that often included one or both of his sons. In 2004, Bill derived much pleasure from singing with the Voices of Cooperstown.
Bill is survived by his wife, Katharine Lloyd; their two sons, Evan and Allan Lloyd Guiney, all of Cooperstown; his mother, Gertrude Guiney of Mt. Lebanon, Pa.; a favorite aunt, Gin Ford; one brother, Daniel M. Guiney and his wife, Kay, of Irvine, Calif.; one sister, Sharon Slavick and her husband, Frank, of Redmond, Wash.; his sister-in-law, Dell Lloyd Waterhouse and her husband, John, McSweeney of Worcester, Vt.; four aunts and uncles; eight nieces and nephews and numerous cousins.
He was predeceased by his father, William Butler Guiney Sr., who died Aug. 2, 1998.
Bill brought good cheer, a fight heart and an irreverent wit to life. He will be loved and deeply missed by his family, colleagues and friends.
The Office of the Burial of the Dead and Eucharist will be offered at 10 a.m. Monday, July 11, 2005, at Christ Church in Cooperstown with the Rev. Samuel R. Abbott, rector, officiating. John Goodyear
CHERRY VALLEY — (Aug. 23, 1938-July 6, 2005.) Mr. John "Jack" Goodyear passed away July 6, 2005, at his residence in Cherry Valley after a long battle against heart disease.
He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Goodyear, and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Bradley Goodyear of Springfield Center and Mr. and Mrs. John Owsley of New Haven, Conn.
Jack had lived in Cherry Valley since 1996, and most recently before that, in Norwalk, Conn., and Watch Hill, R.I.
A graduate of Yale, Jack had lived all over the world as a child.
Over the years, he had published one newspaper (Seaside Topics, in Watch Hill) and had written a regular column for another. He called it "from the Chervillian," a name he coined for residents of Cherry Valley, and its appearance in The Freeman’s Journal attracted a large and devoted readership in Otsego County. Earlier, he had been in the travel business.
He taught a course in writing at SUNY Cobleskill. He became an authority on the history of the Iroquois in the Mohawk Valley.
To everything he did, Jack brought a sharp eye and an even sharper wit, intelligent and wide-ranging curiosity, a gift for writing born of the pleasure he took in sharing his passions with others, the ability to take things in stride, a bouyant and infectious enthusiasm, an unquenchable sense of humor, engaging charm and a flair that was unmistakably his. These qualities never deserted him, even in his last illness, and accounted for his unusually wide and diverse circle of close friends.
He had seven godchildren. He is survived by a large family, including his wife, the former Jane McGovern; two brothers, Dick of Lyme, Conn., and Sam of Mobile, Ala.; and a cousin, Bradley Goodyear Smith of Springfield Center.
A private remembrance service is planned.
Contributions in Jack’s memory may be made to Cherry Valley Children’s Center, PO Box 66, Cherry Valley, NY 13320.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
