Edith M. Davidson

MARGARETVILLE — Edith M. Davidson, a resident of Mountainside Residential Center, passed away Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, at Margaretville Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

Edie was born Feb. 15, 1919, in Stamford, the daughter of George and Mary Edith McGowan Davidson. Edie was born the middle child of three sisters, Margaret and Catherine, both of whom predeceased her.

Edie graduated from Bloomville High School and furthered her education at St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing in Amsterdam. Upon graduation, Edie returned to the Catskills, where she worked in the Stamford Hospital and for Dr. Newman of Stamford.

Edie came to Margaretville to work as a nurse at Margaretville Hospital in the early 1940s. She was especially gifted as a nurse working with newborns and infants in the nursery of the hospital. Edie also worked as an office nurse for Dr. Gilbert M. Palen during this era.

When longtime Margaretville Central School nurse Mary Hoy retired in 1953, Edie entered the field of education where she flourished as school nurse for more than 20 years until her retirement in 1976. Edie had a love for children that made her a perfect fit in the school environment.

She was uncanny at knowing who needed a winter coat, snowsuit, dress-up dress or hot meal. Whatever a child needed, Edie, without fanfare, made sure the child had it. In many ways Edie Davidson was Margaretville’s Mother Teresa, a humanitarian of faith, compassion and sharing.

Along the way, Edie found time to go back to college at Oneonta State and get her bachelor of science degree in education.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Edie lived with Dr. Gilbert and Jeanne Palen and their son, Pete, on upper Church Street in Margaretville.

Aunt Edie did what she always did best: give of herself and make everyone around her a better person, with grace, compassion and humor.

Edie was a voracious reader, collector of fine antiques and benefactor of many charitable causes locally, nationally and internationally. In her retirement, Edie continued to do what she always did: work for others and give of herself to community projects. She was always on the go. Edie loved the people of her Catskill Mountains: the people of her roots in South Kortright and Stamford, and those of her adult life in Margaretville.

Edie Davidson is survived by two nieces, Paula Chase of West Falmouth, Mass., and Mary Williams of Hopewell Junction; and a great-nephew, Sean Chase of Stoughton, Mass.

Donations in Edie’s memory may be made to Margaretville Memorial Hospital.

A graveside ceremony will be held in the spring at the family’s convenience.

Arrangements by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
