Jane E. Huyer
ONEONTA — Jane Elizabeth Huyer, 76, of Oneonta passed away, Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta.
She was born on Jan. 11, 1928, in Bloomville, the daughter of Leon L. Hunt and Eva Sprague Hunt.
She married Garret Huyer on June 5, 1949, in Oneonta, having met as students at Hartwick College. Mrs. Huyer was a 1946 graduate and salutatorian of Charlotte Valley Central School, Davenport, completed three years at Hartwick College, Oneonta, and received an associate degree from the State University of Albany.
She retired from the Oneonta City School District working as a substitute teacher and school tax collector for many years.
She was a member of the Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the Oneonta Country Club, serving on the Board of Directors for many years, and also a member of the Women’s Golf Association, the Oneonta Business Women’s Club, Friends of Swart Wilcox House and was previously the President of the Board of Trustees of the Huntington Memorial Library. She was active in the leadership of the Brownies, Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts, and hosted Fresh Air Children for many years.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Garret; her sister, Rachel Muschett; and her brother, Leon L. Hunt Jr.
She is survived by her beloved children, a daughter, Lizbeth Thea Herrick, and her husband, Craig, of Liverpool, and a son, Garret Hunt Huyer, and his wife, Lisa, of Burlington, Vt.; four beloved grandchildren, Christopher Herrick, Samuel Herrick, Daniel Huyer and Lindsay Huyer. Her children and grandchildren gave her much joy and love.
She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Catherine Hunt Boland, and her husband, Robert; and her cousin, Marilyn Wickham, and her husband, Richard, of Delhi; and many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.
A private graveside committal service will be held in the spring at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church, East Meredith, NY 13757.

Edwin H. St. Onge
ONEONTA — Edwin H. St. Onge, 88, of Oneonta passed away Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.
Edwin was born Aug. 22, 1916, in Long Lake, to Edward and Anna (Russell) St. Onge. He attended school in Tupper Lake until 1927, when the family moved to Graham, N.C. In 1935, the family moved to West Davenport and he graduated from Oneonta High School in 1937.
Edwin and his brothers, F. Earl, Charles Lyman, and his father, Edward, were well-known musicians and performed throughout the area as The St. Onge Orchestra until 1941.
In 1941, Edwin married Charlotte Evelyn Wiltsie of North Harpersfield. After their marriage, they moved to Buffalo, where Edwin worked for Curtis Wright as an airframe welder.
In 1943, he was inducted into the Army Air Force where he trained as an A&E mechanic on the B-24 bomber. Shortly after their son, Wesley Edwin, was born in Oneonta in March of 1943, Edwin was assigned to the air base in Galveston, Texas. In 1945, he was reassigned to Peterson Field in Colorado Springs, Colo., where their daughter, Carole Jean, was born in April 1945.
After his discharge, in December of 1945, he returned to Oneonta, where he became a business machine repairman for Wadsworth Office Supply.
In 1950, he started his own business, St. Onge Typewriter Service, which he successfully operated until 1980, when he sold the business to his son.
Edwin had many interests and talents. Early in his life, in 1937, he and his brother, Charles, earned their private pilots licenses at the Keyes Airfield in Oneonta.
During the 1970s he took a locksmithing correspondence course and serviced locks in the area until the mid-1990s.
He loved fishing, hunting, and boating — building three of his own motor boats. His handyman talents extended to woodworking projects for his grandchildren and furniture construction for his home.
He was active in the community as a member of the Oneonta Odd Fellows Lodge; the Oneonta Masonic Lodge; as one of the original members/founders of the Oyaron Bowmen archery club; and was often seen riding his Honda motorcycle (with a grandchild in the sidecar) on outings with the Retreads Motorcycle Club. He was a HAM radio operator and enjoyed flying RC model airplanes, golfing, and bowling.
He was predeceased by his wife, Charlotte, in 1991, and also by his brother, Charles L. St. Onge.
He is survived by his brother, F. Earl St. Onge (Eloise), of Burnt Hills; a son, Wesley St. Onge (Linda), of Maryland; a daughter, Carole Sbordone, and her special friend, Bobby Segeritz; five grandchildren, Ann Brower (Jon Osborn), of Crystal River, Fla., Barbara Weller (Albert), of Richfield Springs, James St. Onge (Susan), of Cape Coral, Fla., Katrina Papillon (Andre), of Dracut, Mass., and Jason Sbordone, of San Francisco, Calif. He is also survived by seven great-grandsons; several nieces and nephews; and his very special friends, the Lee Family of Oneonta and Taiwan.
A memorial in celebration of Edwin’s life will be held at the Bookhout Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association in Edwin’s name.
Dorothy Downie
OTEGO — Dorothy Downie, 100, of Otego passed away Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta.
Dorothy was born on Nov. 2, 1904, in the town of Sidney in the area of Sidney Center, the daughter of Arthur M. and Alice (Youngs) Rutenber.
She married John Scott Downie of Oneonta on Oct. 6, 1930, in Port Crane. Mr. Downie died on Nov. 9, 1979.
She graduated from Unadilla High School, the Unadilla Teacher’s Training Class, and also the Oneonta Normal School in January 1929, after attending two summer sessions.
Before her marriage, she taught in a one-room school for several years. She had been a resident of Otego since 1930, when she and her late husband owned and operated a dairy farm on the south side of Otego for 32 years, after which they moved to the village of Otego.
She was a member of the Otego United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday School for several years and at one time was President of the Women’s Society of Christian Service, which is now called United Methodist Women of which she was a member. For more than 65 years, she was a member of the Otego Susquehanna Valley Grange. She was the Unatego School Tax Collector for 10 years.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter-in-law, Esther Downie of Richmondville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Marjorie and E. Osborne McMorris and Mary and Duane McMorris, both of Otego; eight grandchildren, Richard McMorris of Gurnee, Ill., Robert McMorris of Wellsville, Patrick McMorris of Laurens, John Downie of Painted Post, Laurie Pracher of Richmondville, Linda Meadows of Portsmouth, N.H., Susan Slovic of Burnt Hills, and Stephanie O’Hara of Charlestown, Mass.; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Evelyn Rosa of A.O. Fox Nursing Home, and Florence Campbell of Mt. Vernon, Texas; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her son, James Downie of Richmondville; five brothers, Earle, Ernest, Reno, Albert and Stanley Rutenber; and three sisters, Annie Rutenber, Leola Howes and Lulu Bartz.
Funeral and committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 34 River St., Otego, with the Rev. Fred Albrecht officiating.
Burial will be held in the spring in the Otego Evergreen Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held at the funeral home from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, in loving memory of Dorothy Downie.

Sumner L. Bossler
UNADILLA — Sumner Lee Bossler Sr., of Unadilla passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004.
He was born on Sept. 29, 1943, in Bethlehem, Pa., the son of Sumner Frank and Jean Schick Bossler.
On Aug. 25, 1986, he married Marjorie Eldred Marshall.
Lee was a graduate of the East Stroudsburg State Teachers College in East Stroudsburg, Pa., and obtained his master’s degree from McGill University in Montreal, Canada.
Lee retired on June 30, 2004, from Unatego Junior-Senior High School after a teaching career of nearly 39 years. He was also a real estate broker with DeMulder Realty (Realty U.S.A.) of Sidney, for more than 24 years.
Lee was a longtime member and a past president of the Unadilla Rotary Club. He was the student exchange program coordinator for the club. He was also a member of the Sidney Lodge No. 2175 BPOE, New York Teacher Association and numerous realty organizations. Mr. Bossler also served his Unadilla community as its mayor.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie, Unadilla; son and daughter-in-law, Lieutenant Commander Sumner Lee and Tamara Bossler Jr., Rockville, Md.; daughter and son-in-law, Anna and Daniel Cassidy, Ambler, Pa.; mother, Jean Bossler, St. Petersburg, Fla.; stepson and his wife, Kenneth R. and Sally Marshall, Frederick, Md.; stepdaughter and her husband, Jenny and Mark Thompson, Frederick, Md.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Will Ann and Jacob Frederick, New Harmony, Ind., and Jeannie and Lloyd Colio, Annandale, Va. Also surviving are nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; a nephew; a niece; several cousins; and his previous wife, Susan Harlacher Witter, Bainbridge.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Bainbridge, with the Rev. Linda King Watkins, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Laurelwood Cemetery, Stroudsburg, Pa.

Prudence Scheiner
RICHMONDVILLE — Prudence Scheiner, 74, passed away Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, at her son’s home in Worcester.
She was born Feb. 23, 1930, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Geralamo and Angelina (Lombardo) Palermo.
She married Charles Scheiner on July 15, 1951. He predeceased her on Nov. 9, 1993.
She was also predeceased by her brother, Benny, and two sisters, Rose and Marie.
Mrs. Scheiner moved to Richmondville in 1985. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cobleskill, where she sang in the choir and also enjoyed singing at many weddings.
Prudence and her husband were former owners of the Village Cupboard and the Worcester Market. She was also employed at the State University College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill as a library clerk for 10 years.
Survivors include four children, Chip Scheiner of Worcester, Paul Scheiner of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Russell Scheiner of Indianapolis, Ind., and Kelley Boylson of Lake Worth, Fla.; five granddaughters; two grandsons; one great-grandson; and one great-granddaughter; a sister, Lillian Ingrao of Vero Beach, Fla.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, loved ones and friends.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester.
Calling hours will also be held at the First Baptist Church, 492 West Main St., Cobleskill, from 10 a.m. to the funeral service time at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, with the Rev. Kenneth Sisson officiating.
Burial will be held at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester at a later date.

Sophie D. Gus
COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Sophie D. Gus, 91, of Beaver Street in Cooperstown died Thursday evening, Dec. 30, 2004, at Otsego Manor.
Sophie was born Sept. 2, 1913, in Pennsylvania, a daughter of Frank C. and Sophie (Yuran) Gorence.
She married George L. Gus on June 11, 1932, in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Cooperstown. Mr. Gus died Feb. 9, 1987.
Raised in Pennsylvania, Sophie attended grade school there and later moved with her family to Cooperstown. For 42 years, she served as a waitress at both The Otesaga and The Cooper Inn.
A faithful Catholic, she was a communicant of St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church and was formerly a member of the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 Ladies’ Auxiliary in Cooperstown.
She enjoyed rug hooking and gardening, and the company of her Lhasa apso, Beau.
Sophie is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Agnes Van Dyke, Mrs. Gladys Davidson and Mrs. Caroline Schemm, all of Cooperstown, and Mrs. Louise Kubis of Schenevus; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and a special friend and neighbor, Rich McCaffery.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by four sisters, Mrs. Alice Ann Gurley, who died Sept. 30, 1998, Mrs. Mary G. Roberts, who died Jan. 30, 2001, Mrs. Ann M. Sugarick, who died Feb. 3, 2001, and Mrs. Jenny Calhoun, who died Dec. 20, 2004; and two brothers, Frank C. Gorence Jr., who died Dec. 22, 1966, and Charles Gorence, who died in Buffalo.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at St. Mary’s "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, with Fr. John P. Rosson, pastor, officiating.
The Service of Committal and burial will take place at a later date in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Index.
Family and friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Robert C. Norris
CHERRY VALLEY — Mr. Robert C. (Pappy) Norris, 75, passed away Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, at the Otsego Manor.
He was born Dec. 22, 1929, in Flint, Mich., the son of Charles and Opal (Berry) Norris.
On Sept. 30, 1962, he married Patricia Lillis in Sparks, Nev., she survives.
Mr. Norris was a chef at the Tryon Inn, Cherry Valley, from 1978-1992. He was an antiques dealer and owner, along with his wife, of Up The Creek Antiques in Fly Creek.
Survivors besides his wife, Patricia A. Norris of Cherry Valley, include five children, Robert P. Norris of Texas, Lawrence and his wife, Beverly Norris, of Kentucky, Jerome and his wife, Shannon Norris, of Tennessee, Jodi Norris Utter of Cherry Valley, and Matthew W. Norris of Virginia; 12 grandchildren; special friends, Larry and Carol Delanney of Cooperstown; and ex-son-in-law, Christopher and his wife, Sandy Graham.
There will be no public services.

Charles R. Cobb
NEW BERLIN — Charles Russell Cobb, 89, of New Berlin passed away Dec. 30, 2004, at the Chase Nursing Home, New Berlin.
Charles was born Dec. 23, 1915, in Pittsfield, the son of Charles R. and Effie (Oliver) Cobb. He spent his childhood in Pittsfield, and he attended Morris High School.
Charles is survived by his sisters, Lena M. Cobb, New Berlin, and Beatrice M. Card, New Berlin.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Alice M. Cobb and Emma B. (Cobb) Webb; and one brother, Frank R. Cobb; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Charles joined the Army in 1942, serving in England, France and Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1946, receiving an American Campaign Medal, EAME Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
He then returned to the family farm where he worked until 1959. He also worked at Scintilla of Sidney and in the New Berlin area as a carpenter before moving to Falon, Nev., where he worked as a roofing contractor. Before retiring, he lived and worked in Oregon and in 1998 moved back to New Berlin.
He was a member of the Christian Church of (Ketchum) Pittsfield and the New Berlin American Legion.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. Charles Taylor of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, New Berlin, officiating. The family will be in attendance at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. proceeding the funeral service.
Memorial donations may be made to the Chase Memorial Nursing Home, New Berlin, in his name.
Alexander Novick
DELHI — Alexander J. Novick, 91, of Scotch Mountain, Delhi, passed away Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
The son of John and Kristina (Okolovich) Novick, he was born Aug. 1, 1913, in Brooklyn, where he married Anne Skilny on Nov. 27, 1938. She died Jan. 3, 2003.
In 1935, "Al" received a bachelor’s degree in social studies from Brooklyn College, where he was captain of the handball team for four years and nationally recognized in the Amateur Athletic Union. He taught special education for 17 years at Sterling High School and served 22 years in the New York City Police Department, retiring as sergeant in 1965. He moved to Delhi 30 years ago.
Al was a member of the Russian Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, Brooklyn, where he and Anne were married; past-president of both Brotherhood of St. Vladimir and St. Paul’s Eastern Orthodox Society of the NYC Police Department; Police Benevolent Association; 60 years in the Masonic fraternity, currently a member of Delhi Lodge No. 439; and past president of Delhi Senior Citizens.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Katherine and Robert Weidner of Naples, Fla., and Roscoe; two grandchildren, Kathy (Walter) Gorski, Branchburg, N.J., and Gregory (Julie) Weidner, M.D., Charlotte, N.C.; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Timo, Tulsa, Okla.
He was predeceased by a brother, Nicholas Novick.
Friends are invited to call 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, when the family will be in attendance at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, where a Masonic memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, conducted by the Rev. Fr. Timothy Holowatch, pastor of St. Innocent Orthodox Mission Church, Oneonta. Burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.
Memorial contributions to Delhi Senior Citizens Activity Fund will be appreciated.
