Gladys C. Hultman
COOPERSTOWN — Gladys Clara Hultman, 84, of Otsego Manor, Cooperstown, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004.
She was born Sept. 26, 1920, in Merrill, Maine, the daughter of Frank and Clara (Grant) Smith.
She married Arvid A. Hultman in 1943 in Lockport. He predeceased her Feb. 2, 1971. She resided in Getzville, outside of Buffalo, most of her adult life.
Gladys was a registered nurse, working at various hospitals in the Buffalo area, including Sisters of Charity, Kenmore Mercy, the Veterans Hospital and Roswell Park Memorial Institute, as well as working a number of years doing private duty nursing.
She moved to Oneonta to be close to her daughter and family, where her grandtwins were born.
Gladys resided at The Meadows (now Otsego Manor) for more than 10 years, since suffering a paralyzing stroke.
Gladys is survived by her daughter, Arvida Bellinger and her husband, David; grandchildren, Mark, Jamilyn and John Bellinger, all of Oneonta; sisters, Connie Bither of Oregon and Geneva Bodge of Washington; brothers, Franklin of California and Charles of Maine; and numerous nieces and nephews throughout the country.
Cremation took place, and burial will be held at a later time in Houlton, Maine.
A memory book is being compiled by her daughter for those who wish to contribute their thoughts or memories.

William R. Schermerhorn
CLIFTON PARK — William R. Schermerhorn of Glenwood Drive passed away Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, at Saratoga Hospital. He was 78.
Bill was born at the Brady Maternity Hospital in Albany on Sept. 7, 1926, to Harrison J. Schermerhorn and Mary Keenan Schermerhorn. His father was an official of the D&H Railroad, and the family was transferred to Oneonta in 1934.
Bill graduated from St. Mary’s Elementary School and Oneonta High School.
He served with the 9th Air Force in Europe during World War II, and after his discharge from the military service, graduated from Siena College in the class of 1952.
Bill joined the Travelers Insurance Company as a field supervisor in the Surety Department of the Albany office and was subsequently transferred to Buffalo as manager of the Travelers’ Surety Bond Department. In 1964 he was transferred to the home office of Travelers in Hartford, Conn., and promoted to the executive position of assistant secretary. In 1974, Bill joined Ter Bush & Powell, a Travelers General Agency in Schenectady, as an all-lines producer. In 1981, Ter Bush & Powell merged with the worldwide insurance brokerage firm of Jardine Insurance Brokers. Bill retired from Jardine as vice president in 1989.
A former member of the University Club in Albany and the Mohawk Club in Schenectady, Bill was a 10th-generation, direct line descendent of Jacob Janse Schermerhorn, who arrived at Fort Orange (Albany) from the village of Schermerhorn in the Netherlands in 1697 on the ship "Rennselaerswyck."
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Corinne Morse Schermerhorn of Clifton Park; his four sons, Richard of San Diego, Calif., Edward and his wife, Kristie, of Burnt Hills, Robert and his wife, Lisa, of Saratoga Springs, and Timothy and his wife, Sharon, of Doylestown, Pa.; three grandchildren, Michael and Kayla Schermerhorn, both of Saratoga Springs, and Caroline Schermerhorn of Doylestown, Pa.; his sister, Carol Hamlin, and her husband, Jim, of Wisconsin; and several cousins, nephews and nieces.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at St. Clement’s Roman Catholic Church, 231 Lake Ave., Saratoga Springs. Burial will follow in the family plot at St. Peter’s Cemetery on West Avenue, Saratoga Springs.

Hedwig J. Smith
BOVINA — Hedwig J. "Heddy" Smith, 93, a former longtime Bovina resident, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, Dec. 19, 2004, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.
The daughter of Constant and Hedwig (Schoen) Weygand, she was born Oct. 27, 1911, in Lyndhurst, N.J., and grew up in Southold, Long Island, where she married Earl J. Smith on Nov. 28, 1935. He died May 26, 1987.
A homemaker and Bovina resident since 1935, "Heddy" was active for a number of years in the former Bovina Fire Department Auxiliary, also enjoying mixed-league bowling in Delhi with her husband.
For the past six years she had been residing at Countryside Care Center, Delhi.
Surviving are her son, Earl J. Smith Jr. of Bainbridge, Ga.; a brother, Constant Weygand of Boone, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Francis, Harry and Charles Weygand.
Graveside services and burial in the Bovina Cemetery will be next spring, before which an announcement will be made.
Memorial contributions to the Bovina Emergency Squad, Bovina Center, will be appreciated.

Lyle M. Robinson
SIDNEY CENTER — Lyle M. Robinson Jr., 33, of Sidney Center died unexpectedly at home Dec. 17, 2004.
L.J. was born May 19, 1971.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and also loved spending time with his children.
L.J. is survived by his father, Lyle Robinson Sr.; his three children, Nicole, Jeffery and Adam; his sister, Paula Robinson; brother, Marcus Robinson; his twin sisters, Stacey and Tracey Robinson; the mother of his children, Victoria Miller; and his special friend, Betty. Also, he is survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his mother, Bertha Robinson.
Funeral and burial will be in the spring.

Robert W. Hedman
ALAMOGORDO, N.M. — Robert W. "Bob" Hedman Jr., 49, an Otero County, N.M., deputy sheriff, was killed in the line of duty Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, near Cloudcroft, N.M.
Bob was born July 2, 1955, in Oneonta. He served in the U.S. Army for 21 years, retiring in 1994 as a staff sergeant. During his military career he served in the Special Forces and was a military policeman. He was a Vietnam veteran and was awarded the Bronze Star. After his military retirement, Bob served as a police officer in Tularosa for one year, as a deputy sheriff in Lincoln County for one year, six years with the Alamogordo Department of Public Safety, and had been a deputy sheriff in Otero County for two years.
What Bob loved most in life was his wife, Cheryl, law enforcement and the mountains, and he loved people and was always there for them.
Survivors include his wife, Cheryl Miller Hedman of the family home in Alamogordo, N.M.; a son, Bobby Hedman III of the family home; a daughter, Lorrie Hedman of Tularosa; a stepson, Mark Miller, and his wife, Kelly, of Albert Lea, Minn.; a stepdaughter, Melinda Miller, and her fiance, Tim David, of Alamogordo; two grandchildren, Caleb and Faith Miller of Albert Lea, Minn.; his mother, Dolores Hedman of Maryland; and two brothers, Fred Hedman and his wife, Rhonda, of Davenport Center, and Ralph Hedman and his wife, Jackie, of Oneonta.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Hedman Sr.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Christ Community Church in Alamogordo with Pastor Jack Brock officiating.
Pallbearers will be officers from the Otero County Sheriff’s Department. Military honors will be provided by the U.S. Army. Cremation will follow the funeral services.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hamilton-O’Dell Funeral Home, in Alamogordo.
Jennie Calhoun
NAMPA, Idaho — Jennie Calhoun, 75, of Nampa, Idaho, passed away Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, in a Nampa hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, at the Nampa Funeral Home, Yraguen Chapel, 415 12th Ave. So., Nampa. Burial will follow in the Mount Calvary Cemetery, Nampa.
Jennie was born Feb. 27, 1929, in Holeshopple, Pa., to Frank and Sophie Gorence. She was raised in Whiggs Corner.
She married Albert Zigon Sr. in 1946 and had three children. She later married Norman Bruce Calhoun Sr. on June 4, 1960, and they had five children.
Jennie loved the outdoors and had some of her best memories fishing at C.J. Strike Reservoir with her children. Jennie’s favorite pastime was baseball and she enjoyed watching all of her children and grandchildren play. She also loved to dance and cook for anyone and everyone. "Jen Jen’s Kitchen is now closed."
She is survived by five older sisters, Louise Kubis, Gladys Davidson, Carolyn Schemm, Agnes Van Dyke and Sophie Guss; one sister-in-law, Marian Gorence; eight children, Franni (Russ) Andrews, Albert (Carolyn) Zigon, Ken Zigon, Dr. Robert (Stacy) Calhoun, George (Angela) Calhoun, Jennifer (Mark Banister) Shannon, Bruce (Kim) Calhoun and Mac (Anita) Calhoun; 17 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Dorothy M. Hull
ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. — Mrs. Dorothy M. Hull, of Zephyrhills, Fla., formerly of Cherry Valley and Cooperstown, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004, at the Sunbelt Health Care Center in Zephyrhills.
She was born July 5, 1918, in Athens, the daughter of George H. Hamm and Alida Porter.
Dorothy graduated from Greenville High School in Greenville and then trained and worked as a beautician in the Coxsackie-Athens area of New York.
She married John Harold Hull of Durham on Sept. 17, 1939.
She is survived by her husband; her three children, Joan Joynt of Ontario, Canada, Janice Noah of Huntington, W.Va., and Stephen Hull of Stamford; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Her brother, George Hamm, and sister, Delhia Steiniger, predeceased her.
Dorothy loved her family, her church family, helping those in need, and all of creation, especially birds. She sang in many church and community choirs throughout her adult life and gave much of her time and resources in voluntary service to her church family.
Her family and friends knew her as a woman of faith and compassion, and one who was able to quietly demonstrate her faith in every context.
A memorial service will be held in Zephyrhills at a date yet to be determined.

John A. Sabatello
DOLGEVILLE — John A. Sabatello, 84, of Dolgeville died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
He was born in New York City on Jan. 17, 1920, the son of Joseph and Alice (Peek) Sabatello.
John married Anne Futuluychuk in 1950 in Troy.
He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a New York state trooper and left the troopers to create, own and operate the Mohawk Valley Claim Service of Little Falls, where he was an insurance investigator and adjuster, retiring in 1985.
He served the town of Manheim as justice of the peace for 20 years. He was a member of the Dolgeville Rod & Gun Club, Sprite Club, Dolgeville American Legion Post and the Elks Club of Little Falls. John also enjoyed ocean fishing and hunting.
He is survived by his wife, Anne, and his son, Jack Gibbons, and his wife, Sharyn, of Edmeston. John was blessed with his grandchildren, Michelle Johnston and husband Ronald, Christy Hopper and husband Kevin, Philip Gibbons and wife Eva; as well as his great-grandchildren, Madison and Adien Gibbons and Ashley and Brittany Johnston. He is also survived by three sisters, Anna Heins, Alice Benben and Lorraine Pancella.
He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Sabatello.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 27, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, at the funeral home.
Interment will be in the Dolgeville Cemetery in the spring.
Mary E. Raeder
STAMFORD — Mary E. Raeder, 96, of Stamford, formerly of Kelly Corners, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, at Robinson Terrace, Stamford.
Mary was born Oct. 10, 1908, in Halcottsville to Arthur and Ella (Ford) Miller.
She married Herbert P. Raeder on Sept. 15, 1927, in Halcottsville. He died Oct. 17, 1982.
Mary and her husband lived on a farm in Kelly Corners for many years. In 1992, she moved to Prattsville. In 1997, she moved to Robinson Terrace in Stamford. She enjoyed her coin collection and flower garden.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Phyllis Raeder of Prattsville; five granddaughters; 10 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Raeder of Elmira; a niece, Esther Snyder; and a nephew, Ralph Felter.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 27, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury. Friends may call from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, prior to the service at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Halcottsville Cemetery, Halcottsville.
Contributions, in memory of Mary E. Raeder, may be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., or the Memorial Fund at Robinson Terrace, Stamford.

Pauline E. Coulter
LAURENS — Mrs. Pauline E. Coulter, 88, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, at her home, with her loving family by her side.
She was born Nov. 29, 1916, in Delhi, the daughter of Robert and Mamie (Thompson) Halstead. On Sept. 20, 1940, she married William H. Coulter in Oneonta.
A resident of Laurens for 57 years, she was a devoted wife and mother.
Survivors include daughters, Carol and her husband, Dick Westcott, Sharon Coulter and her companion, Pat Dellelo, and Kathy Coulter; sons, William B. and his wife, Sylvia, and Allan and his wife, Janice, all of Laurens; her sisters, Ruth Cuomo and Juanita Ploutz, both of Oneonta; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband, William, in 1979, and a son, Gary, in 1990.
At her request, there will be no public calling hours or funeral services.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the Laurens Emergency Squad or to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc.

Elna P. Deighton
CLEARWATER, Fla. — Elna Parish Deighton passed away Dec. 20, 2004, while visiting her family in Raleigh, N.C.
She was born in Oneonta on March 11, 1925, to Lee G. and Helen Ferguson Parish.
She graduated from Oneonta High School in 1943 and then worked as a teller in Wilber National Bank. After moving to Florida, she was employed by the Honeywell Corp. and became involved in volunteer work.
Her greatest happiness in life has centered on her home, her son and daughter and especially her granddaughter.
She is survived by her son, Richard Lee Deighton of Dade City, Fla.; her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Gregory Buol of Garner, N.C.; and a granddaughter, Ashley Lynn Buol. Also surviving is her sister, Mildred Parish of Oneonta.
A memorial service is being held in Florida, and a committal service will be held at the Plains Cemetery in Oneonta in the spring.
The family will welcome friends at the Parish Homestead from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

George W. Stockigt
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — George W. Stockigt, 51, Linden Avenue, passed away peacefully, with the comfort of his family by his side, Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, in his home.
George was born Feb. 17, 1953, in New Berlin, a son of the late Hubert and Pearl Bogart Stockigt.
A lifelong area resident, he was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School.
On Jan. 29, 1977, he married Denise Lewis in Schuyler Lake, a blessed and loving union of 27 years.
George worked for the New York Susquehanna Western Railroad in Cooperstown. His favorite hobbies included dairy farming and helping out with the Dyn Farms in the Schuyler Lake area.
One of his greatest pleasures in life was his love for his wife, children and especially his grandchildren. George was known for his special touch that made a child smile.
He will be always remembered as a kind, gentle man who was more than willing to help anyone.
Besides his wife, Denise, he is survived by three sons and their families, Daniel, his wife, Edria, and their son, Daniel, of Richfield Springs, Lawrence, his companion, Cassandra, his son, George, and his mother, Missi, and his daughter, Destiny, of Ilion, and Michael and his wife, Veronica, of Richfield Springs; a daughter, Juanita Stockigt, her companion, Greg Mullin, and their son, Damion, of Ilion; four brothers, Ernest Stockigt and his wife, Louise, Peter and his wife, Roberta, all of Frankfort, Jess and his wife, Crystal, of Gloversville, and Richard Stockigt of Sherburne; four sisters, Cindy Wilber and her husband, Mark, of Bainbridge, Rachel Couse of Maryland, Caroline Sullivan and her husband, Skip, and Lydia "Daisy" Perry of Richfield Springs. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 27, 2004, in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, with the Rev. John Young officiating.
The family was present in the funeral home Sunday from 4 until 7 p.m. to receive family and friends.
Interment in Schuyler Lake Cemetery will take place this spring.
