Angelyn M. Sweet
ONEONTA — Angelyn M. Sweet, 80, of Oneonta, passed away on Friday, June 25, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.
She was born on Oct. 25, 1923, in Wilmington, N.C., the daughter of Harry and Athena (Sgouridis) Bob. She married Norman B. Sweet in June 1950.
Angelyn was a homemaker. She also taught conversational Greek at Hartwick College and the State University College at Oneonta.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Oneonta, and the Philoptokis Society.
She is survived by her husband, Norman B. Sweet, of Oneonta; her son and daughter-in-law, Stephen L. and Ann Sweet, of Grazely, Berkshire, England; two grandchildren, Andrew Copeland and Sally Lewalter, of London and Granely, Berkshire, England; two nephews, Steven Bobarakis, of Latham, and Mark Sweet, of Greene.
She was predeceased by a brother, Steven Bob.

Lyle M. Thompson
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Lyle M. Thompson, 75, of county Route 22, entered into eternal rest on Saturday morning, June 26, 2004, in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.
He was born on Dec. 26, 1928, in St. Johnsville, son of the late Lyle M. and Bernice LaLonde Thompson. Lyle was raised and educated in St. Johnsville until his senior year of high school, which he completed in Reno, Nev.
On May 28, 1971, he married Joan Lennebacker in the Federated Church in West Winfield. They have resided in Richfield Springs since that time.
For 11 years he worked for the Richfield Springs Central School District, until 1976. From 1976, he owned and operated Haskell's Inn in Cold Brook until his retirement in August of 1987.
Lyle was known and respected for his love and commitment to family and friends. He was an avid and knowledgeable sportsman. Hunting and fishing were a part of his life and he passed his knowledge on to his children and grandchildren. In his retirement he was also able to enjoy his green thumb with gardening, and cooking. He was capable of producing a feast that no one could refuse.
There are no words to express the passion Lyle had in so many areas of his life. Lyle taught and gave respect where deserved, asked for no more and accepted no less. There will be a lost and empty space in our hearts without him but our love and memories can never be taken.
Lyle and Joan loved Canadarago Lake with the peace and solitude it brought to them. He was always willing and proud to share what he called his own little paradise. He will be truly missed.
Surviving beside his loving wife of 33 years, Joan, are one son, Brett and his wife, Barbara, Thompson of Boise, Idaho; three daughters and their husbands, Kim and Gene Butler, Kelly and Maynard Brown II, all of East Herkimer, Nell and Michael Sweeney of Millers Mills; one sister, Regina Miedema of Reno, Nev.; a daughter-in-law, Diane Thompson of the town of Ohio; nine grandchildren, Colleen and Amy Thompson, Matthew Thompson, Jennifer, Ericka and Maynard Brown III, Jason, Keri and Christopher Butler; one great-grandson, Jason Butler; his mother-in-law, Pearle Lennebacker; two sisters-in-law, Alice Jean Thompson and Patricia Newell; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Vernon Thompson, and a son, Mark Thompson, in 2002.
It was Mr. Thompson's wish that all services be private and at the convenience of his family.

Carol B. Du Mond
GRAND GORGE — Carol B. Du Mond, 59, passed away peacefully at her home Saturday, June 26, 2004.
She was born July 29, 1944, the daughter of the late Carl E. Brenn and Helen S. (Stickles) Brenn Victor.
Carol married Gilbert W. Du Mond on Oct. 14, 1961.
A lifetime resident of Grand Gorge, Carol first served as a postal clerk, working with her mother, Helen, who was post- master of the Grand Gorge Post Office. Early in the 1980s Carol was appointed the postmaster of the very same post office, serving with dedication and pride for 38 years until her retirement in April 2004.
She was a member of the Post Masters Association, a past member of the Grand Gorge rescue squad and fire auxiliary. She was a Sunday school teacher for many years at the Grand Gorge Methodist Church.
Carol will be remembered by her loving husband, Gilbert W. Du Mond; her son, Carl W. Du Mond, of Grand Gorge; her daughter, Kimberly L. Du Mond, of West Virginia; and grandchildren, Jason Du Mond of the United States Army, and Heather Du Mond of Stamford; her sister, Harriet E. Mattice and husband, Richard, of Stamford; two brothers, Carl Brenn and wife, Nancy, and James Brenn and wife, Ellen, of Florida; several nieces and nephews; and her dear friend, Vicki Rutheford.
The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to the following Hospice staff: Christine, Maddie, Melanie, Michael and Lucy. The family would also like to thank all of our friends for their love and support during Carol's illness.
Friends may call at the William A. Tari Funeral Home, 37123 Main St., Grand Gorge, on Wednesday, June 30, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
A celebration of Carol's life will be held in the Holy Pilgrim Church, Grand Gorge, at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 1, 2004, with the Rev. Lawrence Majors officiating. After the service the family will receive friends at the Grand Gorge Fire Hall.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of a memorial gift to the Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, in the memory of Carol B. Du Mond.

Vaughn A. Houck
EAST BRANCH — Vaughn A. Houck, 24, a graduate of Hancock Central School, died on Friday, June 25, 2004, in an accident at his place of employment.
Vaughn was a volunteer fireman for the East Branch Fire Department for more than five years. He was a stone cutter since he was old enough to swing a hammer.
An enthusiastic hunter, Vaughn was an avid outdoorsman. He was an accomplished mechanic, keeping old pick-up trucks running long after their normal life expectancy.
Vaughn quickly learned the maple syrup production business this year and assisted his father-in-law throughout the season, making himself indispensable in the sap house. This young man was a tireless worker who never said "no" to anyone who needed him.
Vaughn, loving husband and father, leaves his wife of three years, Emily, and their son, Reece Trevor, 2. A brother and sister-in-law, Dan and Dawn Houck; a sister, Amanda Houck and her son, Austin; parents, Duane and Gloria Houck of Fishs Eddy, survive. Maternal grandparents, Vaughn and Jean Warfield of East Branch; and paternal grandparents, Jessica Houck of Downsville, and Stan Houck of Walton, also survive. A niece, Heaven, and her mother, Rachel, who thought of Vaughn as her brother, also survive.
Vaughn came from a very large extended family, with aunts, uncles and cousins populating the better part of three towns. His adopted family of in-laws, Roger and Candy Ricco, Kit and Esther Carson, Paul and Missy Ricco, Pete Ricco, Amanda Grillo and Priscilla Ricco grew to love him deeply. Vaughn was loved by so many and will be missed terribly. Go with God.
Services are at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 29, 2004, with calling hours at 10 a.m. at Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Home, Hancock. Reception will follow at the East Branch Fire Hall.

Elaine R. Rundle
EDMESTON — Elaine R. Rundle, 81, of Edmeston died peacefully Friday, June 25, 2004, at Chase Memorial Nursing Home in New Berlin.
She was born July 9, 1922, in Hartwick, the daughter of Fredrick and Beulah (Tuller) Morris.
She married Milford W. Rundle on July 23, 1940, in Laurens. He predeceased her on July 1, 1998.
Elaine and her husband, Milford, spent more than 50 years together running the family dairy farm in Edmeston. They were members of the Fly Creek Valley Grange.
She was a very sincere woman, who had a smile to greet you and make you feel at home. She was loved and honored by her husband, children, grandchildren, sisters, brothers and family.
Both Milford and Elaine developed a close group of friends through square dancing. She loved to fish, crochet and was very proud that she had traveled most of the states in the USA.
Elaine is survived by her children, M. Jerome and Jeannette Rundle of Florida, Michael David Rundle and his companion, Vicki Deming, of Edmeston, and Doreen E. and Michael Wilson of Otego; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; her niece, Effie Ainslie; and her sister, Marion Bowen. Her dog, Molly, and cat, Randy, will miss her.
Nine brothers and sisters predeceased Elaine.
Funeral services and committal will be private.
Interment will be at Hartwick Cemetery.

Marjorie M. Sutton
DELHI — Marjorie M. Sutton, 86, of Delhi died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.
She was born April 19, 1918, in Fremont Center, the daughter of Nelson and Ethel Misner.
She married Orley Sutton on March 8, 1951, in Yuma, Ariz. He predeceased her on March 14, 1991.
A 1936 graduate of Roscoe High School, Marjorie and her husband moved to the Delhi area in 1951. In 1973, they moved to Masonville and eventually settled back in Delhi and resided there for nearly 50 years.
Marjorie was an animal lover and especially liked horseback riding. She also enjoyed flowers and gardening. She was employed as an assembly-line worker at Bendix in Sidney for 30 years.
Twelve nieces; and many great-nieces and -nephews; and great-great-nieces and -nephews survive.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Kenneth Misner of California, Claude Misner of Roscoe, and Nelson Neil of Roscoe; and three sisters, Ethel Elwood of Pennsylvania, Shirley Upchurch of California, and Josephine Bowers of Roscoe.
Calling hours will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, with memorial services in Marjorie's memory to be held at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Joseph Bokel, who serves as the pastor of the South Kortright Community Church and the Delaware County Countryside Care, officiating. Burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery in Delhi.
Contributions can be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Delhi or O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

Marion McKinney
ONEONTA — Marion E. McKinney, 85, passed away Friday, June 25, 2004, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, after a brief illness.
She was born March 25, 1919, in Oneonta, the daughter of Cleveland S. and Lena (Wood Proper) McKinney.
Marion was a graduate of Oneonta High School. She attended Hartwick College in Oneonta and business school.
She was employed at Bendix Corp. in Sidney for more than 40 years, retiring as an office manager with extensive responsibility for the business affairs of the Bendix plant.
Marion was member of the Emmons United Methodist Church, the Oneonta Garden Club and recently resigned her membership at the Oneonta Golf Club, where she was one of the oldest members. She was actively involved in a wide variety of community organizations in which she served as a faithful volunteer.
She was predeceased by her parents, a brother, C. Robert McKinney, and two sisters, Florence P. Jones and Anna P. Lake.
At Marion's request, there will be no calling hours.
A celebration of her life will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 29, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta. The committal service will follow in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, with the Rev. Rodney Johnson officiating.

Virginia M. Butts
ONEONTA — Graveside funeral services will be held at Oneonta Plains Cemetery at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 1, 2004, to celebrate the life of Virginia M. Butts. The Rev. Eileen J. Cornwell will officiate at the service.
Virginia passed away on Jan. 8, 2004, at her home that she shared with her daughter, Elaine, in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Virginia was born on May 13, 1916, in Roxbury, the daughter of Herman and Hazel (Ahl) Wiedemann.
Her survivors include her son, Richard Butts and daughter, Elaine Rummell, daughter-in-law, Marion I. Butts. Grandchildren, Richard W. Butts, Jeannine Minor and husband George, Randy Butts and wife Kimberly M., and Kimberly A. Butts. Great-grandchildren, Nicole VanSteenburg, George Bradley Minor and Kyler Randall Butts. Siblings, Merritt, Carl and Doug Wiedemann, Marilyn Jenkins and Vivian Hamway.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Leroy P. Butts, her sons, Gary R. Butts and Jeffrey Butts, and siblings John, Herman, Dick, Fred, Whilemena and Nellie.
All friends are invited to join the family in the celebration of her life.

Francis Gemmell
NEW BERLIN — Francis Gemmell, 64, of New Berlin died June 26, 2004, at Chase Memorial Nursing Home, New Berlin.
He was born on June 24, 1940, in Delhi, the son of the late Robert and Sarah (Russell) Gemmell.
He is survived by his sisters and brothers, Beatrice Staerker, Russell Gemmell and John Gemmell, all of Oneonta, Donald Gemmell of Graybull, Wyo., Madelyn Gemmell of Delhi, Marjorie Johnson of Lititz, Pa., and Louise Sitts of Laurens. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
His sisters and brothers, Robert Gemmell, Sarah Reibyor, Marion Goss, Jean Davidson, Catherine Knapp, and Gerald Gemmell predeceased him.
Francis attended Delhi Central School and the Rome State School. He attended the Hartwick Activity Center before transferring to the ARC Workshop in Oneonta. In 1994 he began participating in the ARC Day Hab Program and transferred to the Edmeston Day Hab Program.
Friends may call at the Behe Funeral Home, 21 Main St., Oxford on Tuesday, June 29, 2004, from 10 to 11 a.m. Graveside services will be in Woodland Cemetery, Delhi at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Dr. Richard Knudson, rector of Holy Spirit Episcopal Church, Schenevus, officiating.
Brayton Hoyt
OTEGO — Brayton Hoyt, 92, of Otego died Sunday, June 27, 2004, at Scenic View Skilled Care in Herculaneum, Mo.
He was born Jan. 7, 1912, in Otego, the son of Burton and Blanche (Ford) Hoyt.
He married Bessie Dyckman on June 25, 1933, in Afton. Mrs. Hoyt predeceased him on Oct. 1, 1953.
Together with his brothers Albert and Harvey, Brayton operated the family dairy farm in Otego. He was a member of the Otego United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his two daughters and son-in-law, Joan Martin of Pensacola, Fla., and Lola and Norman West of Pevely, Mo.; five grandchildren, Scott Martin of Pensacola, Trisha and John Born of Pensacola, Cory Marcera of Rochester, Kevin Marcera of Atlanta, Ga., and Tarma West of Kansas City, Mo.; four great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Mary Born of Pensacola, and Jennifer and Kyler Marcera of Atlanta; as well as a niece and her husband, Mary and Warren Stannard of Cherry Valley.
Brayton was predeceased by his two brothers, Harvey Hoyt, who died Nov. 9, 1997, and Albert Hoyt, who died July 1, 2002; and a son-in-law, Pratt Martin, who died Nov. 24, 2003.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 2, 2004, at 11 a.m. in the Otego United Methodist Church, Otego, with the Rev. Bevon Long officiating. Burial will follow in the Otego Evergreen Cemetery, Otego.
Calling hours will be offered on Thursday, July 1, 2004, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 34 River St., Otego from 6 to 8 p.m.

Varnold C. Slade
ARKVILLE — Varnold C. Slade, 89, of Arkville died Sunday, June 27, 2004, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.
He was born on Jan. 31, 1915, in Arena, the son of John Slade and Letitia Monington.
He married Marjorie Cowan on July 27, 1941, in Rock Rift.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving from 1942 to 1946.
Varnold was an auto mechanic for several auto repair shops in the area. He also worked for the Town of Hardenburgh Highway Department for 10 years. He was a lifelong area resident. Varnold enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Slade, of Arkville; three brothers, Arnold, Glenford and Eugene Slade; two sisters, Freda Dowie and Ila Armstrong; and nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be from 10 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 3, 2004, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. George Sanford officiating.
Committal services will be held at the convenience of the family.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville, in memory of Varnold C. Slade.

Mildred E. Nelson
ONEONTA — Mildred E. Nelson, 92, of Oneonta died Monday, June 28, 2004, at The Meadows, Cooperstown.
She was born Sept. 26, 1911, in Trempealeau, Wis., the daughter of David and Estella (Andrews) VanSlyke.
She married Howard T. Nelson on Nov. 21, 1930, in Oneonta. Mr. Nelson predeceased her on July 26, 1987.
Mildred worked at the Fay Chase Dairy Farm, raising veal calves for several years until retiring in 1976. She also worked at Scintilla in Sidney during World War II.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, David H. and Betty Nelson of Lancaster, Calif.; two grandchildren, Sydney Bailey of Davis, Calif., and Margaret Biek of Fresno, Calif.; two great-grandchildren, Garrett Biek of Fresno and Samuel Bailey of Davis; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Mildred was predeceased by four brothers and one sister.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 1, 2004, at 11 a.m. in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul A. Messner, pastor of the Lutheran Church of the Atonement, Oneonta, officiating. Burial will follow in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to either The Meadows, 142 County Highway 33W, Cooperstown, NY 13326 or to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820, in loving memory of Mildred E. Nelson.
